Megathread Helpful Information for First-Year Students and Applicants

Post image
23 Upvotes

Every year this subreddit is flooded with potential students asking very general questions. In an effort to mitigate these we have compiled a very general list of helpful links for First-Year applicants that cover everything from the housing guidebook to where to store your things over the summer.

Any future posts posing questions that can be answered in one of these links will be removed and the author will be directed to this thread. We hope that this will keep the main feed open for our current students to connect with each other, promote events on campus, and complain about the Val menu.

[MEGATHREAD] Inquiries about admissions, admission status, and important admission dates.

Aspiring Mammoths,

Welcome to the Admissions megathread! This is a thread designed to allow potential students to ask questions about important dates, advice for admissions essays, and ultimately anything admissions related!

Every semester we are inundated with posts asking about acceptance dates, reassurances, chances of admission based on scholastic achievements, and more. Unfortunately this crowds the sub with many reposts and people with other questions or insights get buried in the admissions posts.

We have created this thread for all of your admissions questions as of 1/05/2025 and ALL ADMISSIONS RELATED POSTS MUST BE POSTED ON THIS THREAD.

Any admissions related posts from here on out will be guided to this thread and the original post will be deleted. We do this so that potentional students still have a place for these discussions without crowding the main sub.

Good luck, be well, and keep your tusks up!

Sincerely,

The Mods 🦣

career & entrepreneurship prospects at Amherst

I'm an international student planning to apply ED to Amherst and wanted to hear about the opportunities after graduation. How are the job prospects for international students, particularly in tech, finance, and quantitative fields? I'm also interested in entrepreneurship: does Amherst have a strong startup ecosystem, and do students/ alums regularly go on to raise funding from YC, a16z, or other top VCs?

Questions about LAC

Hi, I'm a high school international student considering early decision to a U.S. liberal arts college. I'd like to ask: if I plan to study digital media technology and later pursue roles such as technical art, will the resources available at a liberal arts college be limited? Also, since there are fewer students and everyone tends to know each other, could that create significant social pressure? And would there be few entertainment or extracurricular activities at a liberal arts college? Thank you very much

Campus Job Opportunities

I’m about to be a freshman and was wondering if any recent alums or upper class men can give me advice/ball knowledge on if there are any on campus jobs that I should be applying for because they either pay well, are easy, or open up doors later on. Thanks in advance. Feel free to DM me!

Graduating but still have classes

When someone graduates and still have a few more credits to do, but want to walk with their class Amherst college lets students. But they usually have an asterisk next to their name saying they didn’t finish. Is there any scenario where a student that hasn’t completely graduated wouldn’t have it?

I know it’s a weird question. Sorry!

Recent (<5y?) alums and current students: What is today's stereotype of Amherst students?

Greetings, young people! 😄

My best friend and I are alums from the 1900's and were reminiscing about the "light bulb jokes" back then about people from various different schools (e.g., "How many [INSTITUTION] students does it take to screw in a light bulb?"). That conversation was sparked by a reference someone had made on the internet about "Oberlin types" and I'd wondered what that meant to people these days (in our era, it was "nerdy music people"!).

We got curious about whether Amherst is now known for very different things than its penchant for a cappella groups, just as in our time the jokes were no longer about the awkwardness of going coeducational. So, I put it to y'all: what's your sense of the current stereotype(s) and/or jokes about Amherst students?

Duo Security for Waitlist Applicant???

EDIT: they told me that it’s just a glitch. good-to-the-bye amherst i’m actually so pissed right now. never been ragebaited by no one like this in my entire life.

hi so basically i was waitlisted by amherst late march and i havent heard anything from the admissions team.

i just received an email from duo/amherst telling me that i am not yet enrolled in its 2FA (duo security’s two-factor authentication) system and that i am required to register a device. after i did that they sent another email that reads ‘Welcome to Duo, (my name) 30!’

and i read on amherst’s website that only current students and employees would have access to amherst’s duo and that applicants should not and cannot enroll in Duo.

CHAT WHAT DOES AMHERST MEAN???????? did anyone else receive this email?

International student considering Amherst College..

I required assistance on the application as well as the "blind-need based" scholarship tags I've been seeing everywhere on the internet on this college. Is it true that they provide scholarships for international students. Also would love to hear everyone's experience in this college that would help me decide if I should apply for this as an international student.

Do you support Amherst going back to SAT required like many Ivy league colleges are doing?

The argument I have heard is that its the best metric currently have for academic prepardness

Did Amherst forget about the waitlist?

Just checking in! Best of luck to everyone on the waitlist.

In 2021 when they overenrolled and 0 students were accepted off the waitlist, they closed it by mid-may. Last year, they accepted 44 students
and closed it on june 2nd.

What’s happening this year? It's almost mid-june and total radio silence. If they were overenrolled, shouldn't they have told us ages ago?

Casuals at Amherst College

I sure hope all the casuals for dining services are getting summer hours because I heard back in summer 2022 some casuals didn't get summer hours and the students set up matual aid fund for those that got displaced for the summer. I heard prior to Covid all dining services employees got hours all year until there was change in management.

I'm glad Amherst College finally moved dining services to a much bigger spot on campus.
