I want to hear some perspectives on this because I’m struggling to understand if I’m overreacting.
I had been standing all day, my legs were hurting, and I had also recently started working out because I already know I need to lose weight.
Later, my boyfriend and I got intimate. Right after we finished, while we were lying in bed, he started saying things like:
“Your hands are small.”
“Your arms are big.”
“Your feet are small.”
“Your thighs are big.”
“You need to reduce your weight.”
Then he just went to sleep.
I was lying next to him trying not to cry.
Later, I explained that what he said really hurt me. It felt like body shaming, and hearing those comments immediately after being intimate made me feel vulnerable and unattractive. I told him that if he was genuinely concerned about my health, that wasn’t the right time or the right way to bring it up.
His response was that he wasn’t sorry because he said it “for my own good” and that it was about my health. He still doesn’t think he did anything wrong. “This is why your leg hurts that’s why I said that”
The thing is, I already know what I look like. I’m already working on it. I work out regularly, I’ve cut down sugar, I rarely eat junk food or sweets, and I’m actively trying to be healthier. His comments don’t motivate me, they just make me feel worse.
This also isn’t an isolated incident.
When we were traveling with his mom, she told me, “You need to reduce your weight.” Instead of saying something like, “Yeah, she’s already working on it,” he just agreed with her. Later, when I told him that hurt me, he said, “You keep saying you work out, but it isn’t visible,” and shut the conversation down.
Whenever I wear certain dresses, he’ll say things like, “Your backside looks boring,” or point out that my body folds are visible. Those comments stay with me.
Another time, we were at a friend’s place watching a movie. Someone passed around a packet of chips. I almost never buy junk food, but I had some because everyone else was eating. In front of everyone, he told me, “Stop eating that. Enough, You’re already becoming fat.” When I got upset, he said it was because I’d get health issues and insulin resistance.
Why say that in front of other people? Why embarrass me instead of talking to me privately?
Whenever I tell him these comments hurt me, he says he isn’t body shaming me, he’s just concerned about my health. But if someone repeatedly comments on your body, points out your flaws, and criticizes what you eat, even when you’re already trying your best… it doesn’t feel like concern. It feels like body shaming.
So I genuinely want to ask
If your partner was already working out and trying to lose weight, would you keep making comments like these?
Would you say these things right after intimacy or in front of other people?
If your partner told you your words hurt them, would you apologize even if your intention was concern?
Does this sound like genuine concern for someone’s health, or does it cross into body shaming?
I’m honestly trying to understand whether I’m seeing this the wrong way
