American Akita Older Akitas and wood stairs - help!

Post image

Our akita is 10.5 years old. He's still pretty spry and gets the zoomies. He gets a movoflex every day for his joint health.

More recently he's been a little hesitant to go down the stairs in our house. Going up seems to be fine because he sprints up the stairs when it's time to eat. but I think because his paws slide on our wood stairs, he gets a little hesitant. Is there anything anyone would recommend to put on the stairs. We are trying to avoid carpet so any type of adhesive material would be ideal.

We could keep him downstairs but our master is on the 2nd level and he likes to be around us. He prefers to sleep in the room with us and has slept in my bedroom since I got him when he was 4.

Curled up in ball was May. Top of her head is this week. Her head has gone so much lighter. I guess this is normal? We've only had her 4 months so still finding things out. She's still got a very dark face - just funny to see the line of dark stop at the top now.

American Akita My best friend💕

I had to let my best friend go to sleep about a week ago, one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make.

I bought her when I was 16, I had no prior experience with dogs before that and she turned my life around completely. We moved out the same year, then traveled and moved halfway across Europe. As much as I raised her, she raised me as well. Soo many people loved her, and she loved them right back. She could just walk up to a stranger she had a good feeling about- deciding that "yeah, you are our friend now". Met some of my closest friends like that.

So tolerant and kind, we used to play and wrestle for hours when she was younger, she never even once hurt me. Not even during her rebellious teenage phase haha.

Coming home from work knowing that the next hour would just be playing with her and getting bombarded with kisses, the best.

Painted her alot, some of the paintings included here.

The last years were hard (but good since she was surrounded by her pack at all times) she had surgery for tumors and also developed arthritis. The meds and rehab worked for a few years. But even though it was painful to stand up, she would always come and greet everyone at the door and never stopped following me into every room. She was so strong.

The sweetest, calmest, coolest, funniest and most loving soul.💖

Thank you for the little more than a decade we got to spend together, and being best thing that happened to me!

Til we meet again!

This is my first year living with Mei (she was a package deal with the boyfriend) so I’d never seen her wet before! She looks like a different dog, haha. Our groomer said she did a great job and was super well behaved despite being anxious, and she only took one nervous dump in the bath💀😅

Behavior Question Considering Adoption

Post image
102 Upvotes

I lost my old boy (Male) over 2 years ago and I was told by the shelter that he did not get along with other dogs (he was a senior) so we kept him as an only dog and never tried to socialize because based on the reasearch we did, male Akitas were better off as being the only dog. So we kept him as an only dog until he passed away. We did end up adopting another dog but I was still grieving and couldn't bring myself to adopt another akita because to me, Sumo was one of a kind. The dog we currently have is a white german shepherd (maybe a mix) and gets along well with all dogs. But I did come across recently of my local shelter having a female American Akita (4yr) available for adoption, and I really want to consider adopting again but saw mixed reviews about female Akita being ok with other dogs and some not. Has anyone adopted an Akita with other dogs and did they get along? I do train all of my dogs so I know thats expected but wanted to know if it is actually possible to have an Akita with another dog? Dog tax of my little old man for the long post 😅

Day 2 without Maxey the Bear.

I am writing this on day 2 of my 12-year-old, 130lb Akita passing. His name was Max, but I called him Maxey the Bear, or Boo.

I don't have children, so Max was everything to me. He was my child, my partner, and my daily routine. We had an absolutely incredible bond, and losing him has completely devastated me. A part of me feels entirely lost.

He was so smart and so beautifully stubborn, always thinking about what to do next. He absolutely loved treats, especially the chicken ones. Yesterday, I walked over to where he is buried, and I couldn't stop crying. I even buried him with his favorite chicken treats because I wanted him to have them on his final journey.

On his final morning, he cried out for help, which he never, ever did. I found that he had vomited and my heart just stopped. I rushed him to the vet thinking I could save him, but an ultrasound revealed a massive internal tumor. There was nothing they could do. They gave him an IV so I could say goodbye. I rubbed his ears and his tummy, and he seemed completely at peace as he passed. I knew he was old and beating Father time, but nothing prepares you for this crushing loneliness.

It is so incredibly hard to process that he is gone. The house is completely empty and the silence is deafening. I couldn't sleep last night because I keep expecting to see him around the corner. I just wanted to post about him because I feel so alone in this quiet house tonight, and I wanted to share what a legendary boy he was.

American Akita Has anyone successfully tried Predation Substitution Training with an Akita?

I have an almost 5 year old Akita whose prey drive is off the charts. I have read only a little about PST, do need to research more, but understand the main premise (to allow dogs to progress through the stages of predation up to chase, and even chase is allowed with a solid release command). I am worried, however, that this will only increase her prey drive. Seems to have success in many dogs, but Akitas are...special. Any experiences welcome. (We do regular training in other ways, I do use an e-collar, work on impulse control, and her recall has gotten to be pretty reliable but not when she's very amped, i.e., already reached chase stage of predation, which can happen sometimes in a second)
