Just published my research on 3D printed threads!
Hi everyone! Long time lurker, first time poster over here.
So a few weeks ago, it was kind of a perfect storm of three things:
- I finished watching My Dress Up Darling
- I was in the middle of the first cycle of 3D modeling and printing classes I teach at the local community college
- I saw conversations about printing full size props on small printers in a popular cosplay Discord server
I had a couple hours to mess around with 3D printable threads in Fusion 360 one afternoon and the results made me think I was on to something. Now here we are a few weeks down the road, and I just published all of the process to design and print custom-sized, reliable 3D printed threads that:
- print reliably with basic settings on basic printers
- have nice tolerances
- don't need supports
- don't get stuck
- don't break
- can be used with screwdrivers
- can be printed even in PLA
All of this is based off of 3D printing tips, tricks and methods that have been floating around the Internet for years, some still valid, some outdated. On top of that, I went ahead and came up with some of my own.
My biggest tip for print reliability: I trimmed the sides of the threads and print them horizontally with a high vertical resolution (0.12mm always works). Having a trim on both sides also gives just enough room to grab, twist and extract the part with a pair of needle nose pliers if it ever breaks!
My biggest tip for tolerances: I add a negative offset that's a multiple of the Fine print resolution in my slicer on both mating parts. On my slicer and with my A1 Mini that's multiples of 0.12mm. A negative offset of 0.06mm was a little tight, but that might have been because the threaded part was hard to "grip" and didn't have any lubrication.
My biggest tip for fragility: Because the threaded parts are printed sideways and the tolerances are generous, the threads never catch on each other enough to cause major stress. The shearing force is distributed across the whole length of the thread, not its width!
That's it. Oh yeah, and I added a notch both tips of my threaded parts so you can use a screw driver with them.

3D printed Titanium Ring
A Titanium ring that I printed on one of the LPBF metal 3D printers at my company a while ago. We decided to leave the outer surface a raw as-printed finish (with a little etching to brighten it), while the inside was machined and sanded down for a smooth fit. We mostly print industrial tooling/fixturing on these machines (along with the occasional automotive intake manifold or other customer part), so printing jewelry is an interesting change of pace.

Need help with Varioshore TPU oozing/stringing on a dual extrusion print (Bambu H2D)
Hey everyone,
I've been doing some work with orthotic devices and am experimenting with printing ColorFabb Varioshore TPU (the foaming TPU whose properties change with temperature). I'm printing this alongside Bambu Lab PLA Basic on my H2D.
All the strings you see on the print bed and prime tower are from the right nozzle oozing into the nozzle blocker. The photo is of my most recent test print, and things seem to be getting worse before they get better.
Here are a few settings I’ve tweaked that may have led to this madness:
Retraction & Temp Settings:
- Retraction Length: 1.4mm
- Z-hop: 0.4mm (Type: Normal)
- Retraction Speed: 15 mm/s
- Retract on layer change: On
- Wipe while retracting: On (Wipe distance: 5mm)
- Precooling target temp: 155°C
- Nozzle temp: 220°C
- Max Volumetric speed: 4 mm³/s
Wall & Infill Settings:
- Seams: Aligned, Scarf joints on
- Wall generator: Classic
- Wall order: Outer/Inner
- Avoid crossing walls: On
- Wall loops: 3
- Infill: Embedded wall into infill / Infill-wall overlap = 30%
- Shells: 5 top layers, 3 bottom layers
- Other: Detect narrow internal solid infill (On), Detect floating vertical shells (On)
Supports:
- Tree hybrid, 40-degree angle (These remove pretty easily, so they seem to be irrelevant).
The filament was dried for a few hours before printing and is kept running in the dryer during the print.

Question Would you buy parametric/adjustable STL or custom G-Code ?
Hi, I am currently pivoting away from the end customer with Gerridaj.com, but I could keep the configurator if there is any demand for it. So I want to ask the community.
My questions:
Would you buy configurable files? How much would you pay compared to a static STL, for example 5 dollars for static versus what price for adjustable?
What kind of models interest you most? Lamps, vases, wall art, functional parts, furniture, or robot programs?
If you are a designer, would you use this to sell your work? Do you worry about customers breaking the model and blaming you?
I am also trying to figure out pricing for the tool itself, whether subscription, pay per download, or one time fee. Any feedback is welcome.
And if you know of other 3D printing communities where this discussion would fit, feel free to share or crosspost.
Would anybody be interested in designing and selling configurable workflows on the platform?
Any help is very appriciated.

I designed a stepper-driven syringe actuator with a motorized Z-axis for automatic solder paste dispensing
I wanted to share a project I've been working on for quite a while: a stepper-driven syringe actuator with a motorized Z-axis.
The original goal was to create a low-cost automatic solder paste dispenser, but the design could be adapted for many other applications that require precise fluid dispensing. The system uses two NEMA 17 stepper motors—one drives the syringe plunger and the other controls the Z-axis movement.
One interesting use is generating vacuum or suction. With a few modifications, it could potentially be used as a simple pick-and-place system for handling small components or other lightweight objects.
This is probably the model I've spent the most time designing and refining, so I'd love to hear what you think and get feedback from the community.

SLM 3D Printer
I’m looking to get a feel for what folks in manufacturing spaces are actually looking for out of a SLM machine right now. Whether you're running production, prototyping, or developing custom hardware, I'd love to know what boxes a machine needs to tick to actually fit your workflow and budget.
I want to leave this fairly open-ended, but here are a few specific points to kick off the discussion:
Build Volume: What is your sweet spot? Is a 300^3 or 400^3 build volume necessary for the parts you're eyeing, or are you constrained more by machine footprint and powder costs than build envelope?
Budget & Format: Where is the realistic price ceiling for a machine like this in your shop? If a machine hit the $20k to $40k range, would you be willing to look at a high-quality kit format to save on upfront capital, or is a fully assembled, turnkey system a better fit?
Material & Laser Flexibility: Are you looking for a dedicated single-material workhorse (e.g., just Stainless or Aluminum), or is open-parameter architecture a must-have for experimenting and prototyping?
Infrastructure & Safety: What are your biggest hurdles regarding facility integration? Power, footprint, air quality?

Adaptive extrusion rate has not yet been tested, as the extruder is currently not connected to the control interface. As expected, this leads to issues when printing with varying layer heights. Nevertheless, the generated toolpaths perform well overall.
Full 6-DOF motion is supported, although it is not required for such simple use cases.
We are currently looking for pilot users working with different robotic arm vendors to evaluate and validate the postprocessors. Gerridaj is not limited to additive manufacturing, it can be used for any type of offline machine programming.

News Robotic Arm 3D Printing: Testing LFAM Capabilities
Last week, we tested the generation of robot arm toolpaths on a real robot from u/stoneflower3d. After a few tweaks, including setting a custom TCP on the physical robot, everything worked exactly as expected and matched the simulation results.
Non-planar printing and non-uniform layer heights require an extruder interface integrated with our software, so the adaptive extrusion rate could not yet be fully validated.
We are currently looking for additional pilot users with robotic arms from different vendors to test the remaining post-processors.

3D printed aluminum heat exchanger
A fun heat exchanger that my company 3D printed for a Formula Student team recently. This was printed on one of our LPBF machines in Alsi10Mg, and uses a spiral outer loop to circulate oil and a central channel for coolant. This specific heat exchanger sees relatively low thermal loads, so the large central channel is designed to transfer just enough heat without adding unnecessary flow restriction to the rest of the coolant loop.
The fittings are all npt, and were trimmed to final size with a tap after printing. The thread profile was roughed in during printing so that we could limit cutting forces on the thin aluminum after printing so that the part would not get damaged.

large scale multi part 3d print
I am making a full scale / life sized human from 7 different 3d prints. i was recommended to model in some way to join the different pieces together, but do not want to do that lol. i do intend to use an adhesive/chemical bond to adhere the different parts together. is it necesarry that i also model in physical tabs/dowls/connections?
