South Australia's education minister says the government will "hit pause" on the compulsory acquisition of restaurant Wok The Duck.

The Mount Barker restaurant was going to be compulsorily acquired to make way for a new school.  

The minister says the pause will allow discussions to occur between SA Premier Peter Malinauskas and government departments.

Has anyone figured out how people are actually securing rentals at the moment? Because I’m honestly baffled.
I’ve been searching, applying, and attending inspections for nearly 4 months, and I still haven’t been approved for anything. I have just 2 weeks left on my lease, and it’s becoming utterly heartbreaking. I have three young kids and my partner, and the stress is really starting to take its toll.

What I don’t understand is how some properties seem to be leased before the inspection even happens. Are people offering months of rent upfront? Are they going into the real estate offices in person and building relationships with the agents? Is there something everyone else is doing that I’m missing?
Another thing that’s really frustrating is the online listings. So many have beautifully edited or AI-enhanced photos that make the property look amazing, but then you turn up to the inspection and it’s a completely different story. Some are in terrible condition, smell damp or musty, or just aren’t anywhere near what was advertised. It’s incredibly disappointing when you’ve taken time out of your day to inspect them.
I’d genuinely love to hear from people who have recently managed to get a rental. What worked for you? Did you do anything differently that helped your application stand out? Any advice or tips would be hugely appreciated because I’m feeling pretty defeated at this point.

I know I have it better than a lot of other people but I’m kinda just writing this out of frustration now, sorry.

I’m a domestic student going to uni 4 days a week. My parents don’t live in Adelaide so I’m in a sharehouse and have to cook all my meals and take care of my distribution of the chores alone too. They do pay for my rent but all my other expenses, I have to pay independently and I won’t get into it too much but because of complicated reasons including my being under 22, I’m not eligible for Austudy.

On top of a full-time uni load, I’m volunteering for something related to my degree a 1.5 hour bus trip away because the job market is so cooked that I don’t have a chance at landing a job once I graduate unless I have experience to show for it. I’m also volunteering at another place separately to build retail experience because likewise, no business, even in a casual retail role, wants to hire you unless you have a bunch of experience anymore.

This obviously doesn’t leave much time in my schedule but you have to pay to survive, so I spent months on-and-off applying for jobs as I burned through my savings from last year. I finally landed one but it involves working late at night and then spending an extra hour getting home which just doesn’t work if I actually want to get 7-8 hours of sleep and be a functioning person at uni the next day. Now I’m having the issue where the shift hours - especially the lateness of them - are just too much for me to commit to without completely burning myself out.

I can’t work more than one shift a week - maybe two if they don’t run super late into the night - but whenever you apply for jobs, every employer wants at least 10-15 hours of availability per week, often split across 2-3 different days, and if you get hired and realise you can’t commit to that (which is pretty much my situation rn), they don’t want to keep you around.

To fellow and even past students, my only question is how? How do you do it? Am I applying for the wrong jobs? I realistically am unable to give more than two days (at reasonable hours) or one night of my week to a job because I have to factor in the bus commute in all this too

Anyone know where you can get solid external doors like this or similar in Adelaide ?

My dad suddenly passed away earlier this year and my mum is trying to sort probate out.

She submitted all the forms we thought we needed but it has been knocked back with a whole bunch of lawyer mumbo jumbo. It isn't a high value estate but enough to stress her out.

Can anyone recommend a good lawyer that can help my mum through this process? She was hoping to avoid it but to no avail. Just hoping to get it all sorted as simply as possible.

The ABC understands three Whyalla Steelworks employees were treated for injuries sustained at the site's blast furnace on Thursday.

Two were treated at the scene for minor burns, and the SA Ambulance Service said another man was taken to the Whyalla hospital with a leg injury.

SafeWork SA inspectors attended the scene, and the watchdog says enquiries are continuing.

Driving to work this morning heading south and there was this big 5-6 car crash on the M2 freeway, heaps of ambos and fire trucks, don’t think anyone was hurt badly though as I didn’t see any ambos with sirens on. Surprised to not see anything online about, nothing on 7news of SA traffic website.

Long story but I am deeply suspicious of auction houses in our little town. I have a wine collection that was more an ego thing than a true passion and now I want to move it because it just feels like I have boxes of wine rather than a collection. Really soulless just Grange, H.O.G, Basket Press, bin 707, and the lesser big names (Armagh etc) oh and of course the St Henri but I'm keeping all of that. I

It's quite valuable and I would have thought a restaurant or bar would welcome the opportunity to buy it at 60-70 percent of price but I cant find any local places I can walk into with the bottles and cut a deal with.

I know FB and Gumtree prohibit listing alcohol but are there some private groups or something? Even like a swap meet sort of thing?

ALSO another thing is that you gotta be a bit if a wine geek to want to go to a wine auction. Which means all these wines are just circling through the same hoarding saddos like me that drink one bottle but stash 50. And it goes on until the wine is ruined.

I’m researching the history of theatre production in Australia and I’m working with AusStage to learn more about the Queen’s Theatre here in Adelaide! There was some archaeology done in 1990 while SA gov was buying the property but not much information about the operations and backstage.

I know there’s some good history and ancestry nerds out here, maybe someone in your family was part of it!

If anyone has any resources such as heritage or historical records relating to Adelaide’s development or theatre in 19th century Australia I would be delighted for you to share here.

We’ve got 3 kids, 2 in primary, 1 in kindy and we’re currently at a local Catholic school. Leadership has been great and we genuinely appreciate the support. We’re practising Catholics, and while the RE classes exist, they’re mostly colouring sheets and generic God loves You. It’s fine, but the real Religious Ed happens at home and church.

We’re one of only a handful of religious families and lately the downsides are starting to outweigh the benefits.

1. There’s not much community, Catholic or otherwise. Families seem to keep to themselves. Or formed cliques due to having older kids ahead of ours.

2. A high proportion of additional needs kids in each class. One of ours has some emotional regulation stuff (and we are vwry proactive in supporting them) but otherwise no major needs. The overall mix makes classroom dynamics pretty hard/our kids dont get the extension which they both need.

3. Friendships are tough. A lot of kids are on screens constantly, phones, YouTube, trends, memes and ours don’t have that. We have controlled access to that world but no personal devices or free reign with it.

They end up being the “weird” ones because they can’t talk about whatever online thing is current or what app is trending.

1. A chunk of families seem to be there for image. More about being able to say “we’re at a private school” than anything to do with values or community.

Not looking for an argument and honestly we dont judge the other familes (everyone makes their own choices) just trying to figure out what the local public primaries are actually like and if theres going to be any benefit to our kids in moving school or if its the same everywhere.

Edit: no problem with people needing support (i used to work with additional needs kids, loved that job) just there is ALOT in our classes , more than half would need some form of intervention, 2/3 of one of the classes have literal 'chew toys' .
