Sub Rules AKA I can't see the sidebar

[TAG] questions with your state
When asking a question, add a state tag to the title, as the answers can vary a lot. ie:

[VIC] How do I get a licence?

or

[NSW] What does military appearance mean?

If you "don't like reading"
You should try YouTube, or something else not inherently involving reading.

Try to not be a dick
Other that site wide rules, there's a lot of leeway given here.

Selling anything firearm related
Relevant site wide rules include the prohibition against selling/advertising/trading/whatever anything firearm related.
Don't make me delete your post to protect this sub.

As /u/ramathaham said:

Any post selling firearms or ammunition will be removed, people who post multiple times may be temp banned or more if they are flogs about it.

Note this also applies to things like scopes because I am too lazy to look up the rules on what we can do so it is easier to make it a blanket rule.

Whilst not a rule per se, if you are here only to promote your business you will have a bad time.

Community Update: Refer to sub rules before posting.

Hi cobbers,

We've got a lot of new members and it's great to see, however there's been a spate posts and comments that are either in breach of Reddit's Terms of Service, or the very few guidelines we have here.

Please refer to the community info before posting.

NO SALES POSTS

Reddit's content policy on transactions involving firearms, ammunition and weapons means this is strictly verboten. Posts like "how much do you think a Howa 1500 in .308, safe queen, handling marks only, is worth" will be removed the same as it's a grey area we don't want to play with.

ILLEGAL ACTIVITY

Whether you're a certified badass, a confused teenager, or a keyboard warrior extraordinaire, posts and comments promoting illegal activity is not what we want this sub associated with.

THE RULE

Try not to be a dick.

Newbie question .22-250 Remington, what species?

Hi guys,

Finally got my A/B gun license approved and my card has arrived in the mail.
My mum wants to gift/transfer her Howa 1500 .22-250 to me.

She has only ever used it for humane destruction of livestock (pigs) but i would like to know in realistic hunting situations, and at a realistic distance, what kind of game and pests you would humanely be able to dispose of with this calibre.

I would eventually like to take it hunting with some of my mates. They usually use their .222, .243 or 6.5 Creedmoor and when i asked them about the .22-250 they said they’d never used one or know much about them. Hence why i’m asking here.
They usually go for wild dogs/foxes, pigs, the odd fallow deer and rabbits.

Would a .22-250 be able to hang with them?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Gear & Accessories Converting FWB Model 2 to use 12g Co2 cylinders

Recently picked up an old FWB Model 2. Absolute little gem but the CO2 cylinder is giving me the shits. I've seen/heard of a conversion kit so you can use 12g cylinders with them. Has anyone seen / done this and if so were there problems? Can you still do a 60 shot match on a cylinder? Was there a more marked drop in accuracy in warmer weather?

Cheers.

Would parts that fit both Cat D and Cat B firearms be classed as prohibited imports requiring federal approval to import?

I was reading that the lever action Henry Supreme uses an AR15 bolt, barrel extension and barrel nut. In the USA and Canada there are people converting it to other cartridges like 6mm ARC or even making them easy to switch barrels so they can take any AR-15 spec barrel (without the gas port hole of course)

But as these parts fit Cat D firearms would that mean importing them would need special near impossible to get federal approval over just a plain B709 approval?

Reloading Going rate for once fired brass

Anyone know what the going rate is for once fired brass from factory loads? And is it legal to sell privately?

I’ve currently got 60 cases, a mix of Hornady and Federal and plan on keeping everything I shoot. I haven’t as yet got any reloading gear and it might be 12 months or so before I do so I’m wondering if it’s worth offloading my brass to help cover the cost of ammo

What is it with all these youtube channels posting videos of them wounding animals because of crap skill level.

I watch the odd youtube channel of people that seem to mostly be involved in amateur pest control. What is it with them just blasting away (often with underpowered cartridges) with the thermal on mobs of pigs with plenty of misses and plenty of obvious wounding and then the animals get away to die a slow death elsewhere.

I am not going to say no one is ever going to miss or have an unfortunate shot placement but I am seeing videos of people just blasting away willy nilly when their skill level is shit for moving targets.

I wonder how long until the RSPCA takes notice and starts a campaign to vilify hunters or even starts pressing charges of animal cruelty. I think it is unfortunate people do it in the first place and then put these videos out there.

Licensing NSW PPL Applications

In case anyone has one submitted and waiting. I got my photo advice issued today at 35 days! \o/

Basically my original submission to add a genuine reason is still sitting there at 100 days. When i called up, the lady advised that submitting a brand new application would be quicker and she was right!

Can't wait to start my Cat - H journey :)

Gear & Accessories 3/8 dovetail high scope mounts

I have a Rossi 8122 with the factory open sights, and have been gifted a Nikko Stirling 3-9 x 42 scope by my wife to pair with it.

Unfortunately the scope fouls on then rear open sight and there is no easy way to remove to make room. I’ve been looking for high 3/8 dovetail scope mounts that will let the scope clear the open sights but am having trouble finding something that I’m confident will work.

Has anyone got experience with this issue? Are there are high scope rings/mounts that are guaranteed to clear the open sights? Some of the cantilever mounts look interesting but I’ve never used them before.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Anybody tried this? I got a box the other day based entirely on the price, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

I thought it was interesting to Barnes ammo with Sierra bullets.

Newbie question [Vic] is it worth doing the SSAA Practical Firearms Safety Course

I’m tossing up between doing the practical course with SSAA rather than just the basic written test. It’ll be for both myself and my 16 year old son.

More than anything else I thought it’d give us a chance to do a bit of shooting, but if there’s a better way to make that happen while we wait for our licenses, I’m all ears.

Manual PTA (VIC)

Hi all,

Submitted some paper PTAs in the mail last month. Included in the one application were three long arms. Last week I received the PTA ( in the mail) for just one of the long arms I've applied for.

Curious to know if they're meant to come separately and on different weeks (seemingly) or if they're lost in transit and reapplication is necessary.

Thanks

Banter First day out with the new Rifle

A few of you saw my post earlier in the week, well I changed to a slightly more expensive scope which they had in stock and was able to pickup the rifle on Friday.

Rifle is a Lithgow LA102 Signature chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and those groups were shot with the Federal Berger OTM 130gr match load at 100m

I shot a total of 60 rounds and these were the last 3 groups of the day. I liked that three shot group so much I decided to leave it! The other two are 6 shots. Overall pretty happy but definitely some more work to do

Firearms Query UTAS DEFENCE? has anyone tried or own one in australia?

hi yall. im new to this community. i came by wondering if anyone has tried the utas defence firearms. particularly the UTAS 516 Straight Pull in 223/5.56.

https://www.deltamike.co.nz/product/straight-pull-ar15/

Their sold in New Zealand by delta mike and from digging around you can get them shipped over to Australia by a authorized shop while holding a cat b license. just wondering if they are worth the purchase or you should avoid them in anyway.

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Buying a scope from the USA

I am travelling to the USA and want to pick up a scope while I was over there. I know red dots and thermal scopes fall under ITAR but I wasn't aware of any such restrictions for ordinary rifle scopes. The particular scope I am looking at is half the price compared with local pricing.

Anyway I put in an order with Optics Planet and was up front with them that I was exporting overseas. They cancelled my order with the following reasoning:

> Unfortunately, due to the U.S. Government Export Control Laws and Regulations, U.S. Companies are not allowed to ship or assist with the shipment of the product(s) you ordered outside of the physical territory of the United States without proper licensing. We apologize, but at this time we are not able to apply for the required license(s). Therefore, we are forced to cancel your order.

Do I just need to order from a company that does have whatever license they are referring to?
