Why was that?

I never noticed that before, but a few narrative choices in the final stretch of Book 3 really stood out to me. While Zuko’s redemption arc is masterfully written, it feels like it inadvertently sidelines Aang and creates some jarring shifts in character dynamics.

I know it makes sense since they need to establish that Zuko has changed and he needs to clear his name for the people he hurt before and I’m glad they took their time to develop this line, but during the Sozin’s Comet it almost feels as if Zuko becomes the main character while Aang has to figure out the Ozai thing by himself.

The team gets to reunite with the White Lotus members, meet with Iroh and hear out his plan all while seems as if Zuko is in charge. He has a lot more lines than Aang and more interactions with the Gaang than Aang himself. Sure, meanwhile Aang is supposed to be solving his moral dilemma but personally I’m not a fan of separating him from the group at the end when he should feel the support of his loved ones.

I also can't shake the feeling that the final Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula was way more emotionally charged, it was absolutely cinematically stunning, and arguably the best-written fight in the entire series. And the way Katara outsmarted Azula at the end? Top notch fight strategy, tremendously brilliant. Aang vs Ozai felt a bit… too much like a DBZ-style beam struggle rather than the thematic and martial arts depth that made the show's fights so iconic. Even SokkaSukiToph’s plan to take all the airships down was inventive one way or another. All that while Aang’s secret to defeat Ozai was unfortunately a deus ex machina in the form of a Lion Turtle granting him spiritual abilities that were never mentioned before the finale.

Now the thing that baffles me the most is Katara’s feeling towards Aang. Before the Eclipse Katara was always affectionate towards Aang, interacted with him a lot and made sure he’s feeling alright. Their mutual feelings were clear - the cave kiss, the fire nation dance, her interpretation of Auntie Wu’s marriage prophecy, etc.

Suddenly after the Eclipse she’s confused? Their interactions became rare, they don’t console each other anymore. From the Sourhern Raiders episode on she interacts mostly with Zuko, comforts him and even fights Azula together with him? Katara doesn’t even get to see Aang take on the most important fight of his life, while Sokka, Toph and even Suki all witnessed it from afar. The Ember Island Players episode only made this tension between them worse.

Now I’ve read that Katara and Aang were always supposed to be endgame but I’ve also read unsupported claims that they wanted to add more tension between them by feeding the Zutara shippers?

Was this all caused by Zuko’s popularity among the fans? I only started browsing ATLA forums way after the finale so I’m not sure what the situation was like before that.

I’m certain this probably was talked about in the span of 18 years since the show’s ending but I kinda didn’t feel like digging through the old discussions, sorry for that.

Rewatching ATLA and I was pondering what if Aang was defrosted by Katara and Sokka like usual, BUT, what if...->

Aang was under pressure and ran away, caught in a storm and froze in the ocean for 100 years. During his disappearance, The Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the airbenders during Sozan's comet. The other nations responded and did their best to weather the conflict. After 15-20 long years, all the airbenders were caught and killed. The Southern water tribe did their best but are a shell of what once was. The Earth Kingdom lost some land to the Fire Nation and new colonies were established and the Northern Water Tribe was largely untouched.

The world then comes to an agreement, The Fire Nation have proven their might and what they accomplished and conquered was theirs to keep. Peace ensues (perhaps other unrelated minor conflicts here and there) and 80-85 years later, Aang, the last airbender is discovered and slowly comes to terms with the new world.

What does he do now? He has no land to call his own, no family or monks to return to? What story would ATLA tv show be about?

I figured two possibilities, 1. Roku reaches out during the solstice and warns the fire nation is up to its old tricks again, then resume the tv series but as the world is currently experiencing peace, we are never certain conflict is on the horizon until the grand finale.

1. the next comet comes and goes, the world still has peace, and aang grows up an orphan and eventually tries to start a family (kinda like what unfolded ahead of ALOK). He passes on his teaching to airbender kids and hopes they continue to try and rebuild the Air Nation and there is no ultimate conflict that drives his growth, ambition and connection to the new world.

Im rewatching the series and in episode 12 he gets stuck in a storm underwater agian. Given what happened the time before how come he didn't form an iceburg again? was it him knowing the world needed him? or something else.

I saw a lot of people not just here on reddit but in so many media platform downplayed and talking about Kyoshi not being a good waterbender and their argument was her forgetting she was a waterbender twice on two different ocassion which is funny to me since F.C Yee himself said that Waterbending is the second element after Earthbending that she got the most improvement from.This is some of her Waterbending feats from both books;

Water Propulsion (Canals) – Kyoshi waterbent a makeshift raft upstream through Ba Sing Se's drainage canals, using them as a fast shortcut to the Agrarian Zone.

Water Bubble Propulsion – While trapped underwater with Jinpa, Kyoshi created a rolling water bubble that rapidly carried both of them to the surface.

Underwater Burst Speed – After diving toward Yangchen's island, Kyoshi remembered to waterbend and propelled herself underwater faster than an elephant koi.

Full Moon Tidal Wave (with Kirima) –Empowered by the full moon, Kyoshi supplied the raw power while Kirima controlled it, lifting a massive body of water onto a rooftop before unleashing it through the compound. The tidal wave flooded entire corridors, swept guards from their posts, and burst through multiple walls before they released the water.

Wave & Ice – Kyoshi snapped a ship's mooring ropes, created a river-wide wave that carried it about 100 yards offshore, then instantly froze the wave into giant talons of ice that suspended the ship in midair.

Freeze lungs– Kyoshi instantly froze Yun's heart and lungs solid, creating a tunnel of ice through his chest so quickly and powerfully that the moisture in the air behind him crystallized into frost.

Self-Healing – Despite lacking formal healing training, Kyoshi used waterbending to heal the wound on her neck, knitting her skin back together without the usual healing glow.

Basic Battlefield Healing – Kyoshi used waterbending to stop bleeding, treat superficial injuries, and reset dislocated joints on wounded allies using her limited healing knowledge.

Life-Saving Healing – Kyoshi stabilized Rangi after she was impaled, using waterbending healing to help save her life.

Mind you the the water bubble and the underwater burst speed was after the moment she remember she was a waterbender.Yeah I know she still didn't master Water at this point and the healing didn't glow but for her to be able to achieve all of these feats are impressive and just ignoring all of these because of her forgetting doesn't sit right with me.What do you guys think?
