I got a 2 on the lang exam . The essays were easy for me, but the mcq were hard

Hello! I’m gonna be a sophomore this year and I’m taking AP Lang, I was wondering if there’s anything I should know beforehand about this course because some people are telling me its not bad and it’s just a whole lot of writing and some people are telling me it’s very difficult.

Got a B in the class and lowk cried during every essay but locked in for my final and the ap exam. So glad it’s over. Hannibal and Will are on there bcuz I wrote about Hannibal NBC on the argument prompt

My AP lang teacher discouraged using personal anecdotes as evidence in DRQs. Because of this, I often tried to avoid doing so. But when I got to the prompt about how individuals must form their own understanding of the world rather than relying solely on the wisdom of others, it reminded me much of myself.

For the majority of my DRQ, I wrote about my own experience growing up in the deep south and Christianity being the only religion I knew. I recalled a time in fifth grade when a good friend of mine came out to me as gay, which made me reevaluate beliefs I had initially accepted without question. His confession was only the beginning of my awakening to the hypocrisy in the verses I had been taught to worship.

Alongside my story, I did talk about some social phenomenons and the consequences of indoctrination, but I still did not expect to do that well. A large portion of my evidence, and the very backbone to my writing, couldn’t be proved. I was unsure how ap graders would react to that.

But ironically enough, both my friend and I made 5s! :)

What have been some of the funniest papers you’ve read? Like quality aside either the content or writing style gave you a little giggle.

Does anybody remember like what the prompts were about for each essay for this year’s AP lang essays I completely forgot and I want to remember what I wrote about 😭😭

For reference, the following is the context that I would like to share to excuse myself lol (also to make the whole story less ridiculous).

English is my third language. Also, I didn’t get to touch upon academic English until 3 years ago, and I eventually got to immerse myself into a completely English-speaking environment last year after dealing with visas and other fastidious (tedious as well) tasks. As a result, I still struggle with slangs, idioms and sayings.

I would say I’m somewhat competent at language learning, and I wanted to challenge myself. So I took AP Lang this year. But in the exam, I made a funny and silly mistake:

In my rhetorical analysis essay, I incorporated the term “mermaid’s purse” into my analysis of the author’s view on having reference books which sharpens one’s writing skills. However, the unfortunate thing was that I thought the “mermaid’s purse ” was an actual purse of a mermaid like Ariel from the Little Mermaid movie, so the first thing that came to my mind was Ariel perching on a rock holding a cute little purse while staring at the sunset vanishing into the sea horizon… :(

So I wrote a full paragraph about the literal meaning of this phrase which I’m too sleepy to to recall cuz it’s 3 in the morning rn gotta go to sleep.

The moment I stepped out of the classroom after finishing my exam, I asked chat about it, and that honestly just ruined my day. May 13th was the day on which a naive AP student was given a biology lecture by the artificial intelligence: a mermaid’s purse is an egg of a shark… I’ve never heard of this term before even though it’s just a common name for the shark’s egg.

When it rains it pours. I also got a stomachache that day cuz I drank a huge glass of lemonade before lunch.

Hope this story makes someone laugh cuz I personally find it funny… (my native speaker friends also made fun of me for a few days because of this lol)

Guys my teacher completely bailed and moved across the country in the middle of January and we got a new teacher whose style was completely different. She basically revealed everything we learned in the first half of the month was wrong. Thought I was cooked and spent like two month's studying but we did it. We got a five!!!

This post is a little silly... but if anyone needs to hear it, it's possible to get a 5 and NOT just write about silly stuff. For some reason there's this narrative this time around that "academic pieces were scoring lower," but that isn't true (at least for the west coast prompts.) Writing about academic stuff can actually get you a good score. I wrote about parental stress, and mental health and still got a 5. Don't lose hope!

For reference, all my prep was writing 1 practice essay for each essay type to get my timing down and looking VERY deeply at what College Board wanted in the rubric the day leading up to the exam. It also helped that I have a 35 English and 36 reading on the ACT so I found the MCQ to be relatively easy as well. But I think the reason for that is because I DON'T use AI to do my English assignments for me; I actually read the books and write my own essays. So over time, I actually learned how to become a skilled reader and writer.

Another pro tip is to make sure to actually explore complex perspectives in your essays and don't make them one-dimensional. For example, I argued against naptime in the Synthesis but I didn't just talk about my personal beliefs, I explored the broader perspective that if society as a whole would stop normalizing worse sleep schedules, then the issue at hand wouldn't exist in the first place---on top of analyzing the actual pros and cons of naptime and much more but reasoning my argument to showcase that naptime in the workplace is ultimately a net negative for society and workplace efficiency.

In the Rhetorical Analysis, I didn't just say "imagery," I explored in-depth why she chose the images/analogy/etc. she did, what this shows about what she knows about her audience and how she uses specific rhetorical choices to most effectively convey her point. I also used some niche rhetorical choices like "appeal to shared experiences" or a pronoun shift that only occurred in the final paragraph, and I think that catching little things like those are what will make your essay stand out compared to everyone who picks the most obvious choices. Don't get me wrong, I still did analyze the obvious choices, but also exploring the purposes behind the overlooked or subtle rhetorical choices shows that you have more than a basic understanding of how the rhetorical situation works on a deeper level.

And for the Argument, use varied evidence!!! It's really easy to make a strong argument by using examples from history, but I also appealed to exploration as a vital aspect of human nature. I also had a counter-argument, but my counter-argument wasn't just "some people might say that X is wrong," I talked about the specific limitations to the quote that was given, and how those limitations could be dangerous on a broader scale. If I remember correctly, the quote was about not letting others stop your imagination and hindering exploration or something like that, and I talked about how the claim cannot initially be supported fully at face-value because if people were to just not listen to negative advice or let their imaginations be "hindered" through things like speed limits or no trespass signs, then lawlessness would be rampant. I talked about how her claim doesn't take into account that imaginations must be hindered when public safety could be infringed upon, alongside a bunch of other stuff.

and i got like 4 hours of sleep before the test

In the class I maintained a solid A both semesters and always nailed my essays, averaging 5/6. This is my first year taking AP and I somehow got a 2 on APUSH as well. I feel so dumb after staying up to check my scores and have been crying ever since. I was so confident after my exam that I would get at least a 4. Also happens to be that my friend didn't even have a conclusion for ALL of her essays and got a 5. Am I just stupid???????
