Discussion The Undertone (2026)

i just finished the film without looking at any reviews on reddit or elsewhere so this is a totally unbiased opinion, but this film may be one of the more unsettling films i’ve watched in awhile.

i’m not sure if it’s because i watched with headphones in or what, but the beginning was kind of boring. definitely a slow burn, but once it hid the midway point i became a lot more interested. the audio did a lot of the heavy lifting but i think that’s what i really enjoyed about it. david gertsman and jon lawless, chef’s kiss

i haven’t felt this much dread since sinister. pretty well-explored themes (demons, paranormal activity, etc.) but i enjoyed the audio design and the podcast element.

3/5, would not watch again because of that audio lol

Question A24 store refund/order change

Yesterday i ordered the 4k ultra uhd disc of the backrooms but i meant to buy the standard blu-ray version (i didn't see the option where i could change which one it was, thought i was buying the blu-ray), i emailed asking if i could change my order or get a refund, does anyone have experience with this and know whether or not they will read and accept it?

Update: I sent the initial email at 10 am with no response, but after reading an FAQ from their website i realized i should have my order number in the subject of the email so I sent a new one

Update2: They were able to cancel the order, thanks for the help everybody!

Discussion What "The Backrooms" (Kane Pixels) is ACTUALLY About [SPOILERS] Spoiler

Right after my first watch, I came up with a crazy theory based strictly on the details shown in the movie. I’ll break down my thoughts point by point below.

### 1. Clark is not the main character / The entire world is Mary’s madness

Throughout the film, Clark is on screen almost constantly—we watch his life and his struggles. Hell, even the Backrooms itself seems to be an extension of HIS furniture store and, as many believe, HIS internal issues.

But no.

Let's start with the fact that Mary's childhood home is literally a condensed version of the Backrooms. Yellow walls, furniture piled on top of each other, no sunlight—sound familiar?

Let's dive deeper into her psychology: an insane mother (a crucial detail we’ll return to later), a rough childhood, and a house she was forbidden to leave. If you aren't allowed to leave the house, you don't see the outside world. Her home *was* her entire world. The world became an infinite, enclosed space. Naturally, these visuals got burned into her psyche.

In adulthood, her hereditary schizophrenia—likely passed down from her mother—entered an active phase. Those childhood images returned in a distorted, exaggerated form. As the disease reached its peak, Mary fell into a coma—a dream state rooted in her massive childhood trauma, which had grown like a tumor.

So what about A-Sync then? Did they somehow teleport into people's minds? Of course not, and here is where they actually come from.

### 2. A-Sync isn't a group of mad scientists—it's just a medical company manufacturing MRI machines

Obviously, Mary needed to be taken to a hospital, which is exactly what happened. She was placed inside an MRI scanner for brain imaging to determine a treatment course. Her dying brain managed to catch onto a single detail: the A-Sync logo on the MRI machine.

How do I know this? It’s mentioned near the end during the dialogue between Phil and Mary: A-Sync used to manufacture MRI scanners—though "used to" only applies within Mary's mind. Her subconscious needed a logical explanation for what was happening, and it found an outlet in that logo, using it to invent a "mysterious organization exploring a mysterious realm."

Furthermore, right in that same scene, we are shown MRI brain scans. Connecting the dots: those are scans of Mary’s brain, which further confirms my theory.

### 3. What are the entities in the Backrooms, and who is Clark after all?

The entities that vaguely resemble humans—made of an edible white substance—are real people from Mary’s life/her patients. You know how faces often get distorted in dreams because the subconscious remembers them that way? *"The Backrooms remembers them like that,"* as Clark put it in one of the most unsettling dinner scenes in the film. This further proves that the Backrooms is merely a figment of a dying brain.

Clark is Mary’s patient. He is the only one who isn't an entity (or is a different kind of entity). Why? I believe Mary saw his face far too often. We get a hint during a childhood flashback: an annoying TV commercial for Captain Clark’s furniture store pops up.

It’s also very possible that Clark himself triggered Mary’s active schizophrenia with his stories about a place resembling endless office corridors, making him the "anchor" of the Backrooms. Why did Clark see the Backrooms *before* telling Mary about it? Simple: an unreliable narrator + he could have been suffering from his own mental illness related to Barbara leaving and subsequently living in a furniture store that closely resembles Mary’s Backrooms. Just a coincidence.

### 4. Is Mary an entity?

Short answer: no. But also yes and no at the same time.

Before the credits roll, we are shown a distorted version of Mary sitting in a chair. Most likely, that’s the moment her brain officially died. It forgot its own identity. It no longer remembers the details of who it was, effectively becoming an "entity"—pure oblivion.

*This concludes my analysis. I’m not claiming this is absolute truth or the only valid perspective—just sharing my personal thoughts on what took place in the film.*

P.S. I wrote the original text in Russian. Let me know if you would like to see the original.
