A week ago decided to get back into Magic the Gathering and play the Modern format. I made an MTGO account and my first deck was the preconstructed mono-green infect deck (which I have since turned into simic infect). Next, I decided I wanted something more stax related. I had heard of 8 racks and saw that the core pieces weren't too expensive, so I decided to build a budget version of that.

Hoo boy does my budget 8 racks suck but I had a blast playing it. I promise not to play it that often, this was a guilty pleasure (I felt so bad torturing my opponents). I've decided to try to upgrade it based on my (probably retarded) theories of what might be good.

I had 4x shrieking affliction but I though the card wasn't good. I frequently was not able to get my opponent's card count down to 1 or less, and shrieking affliction did nothing in the early game. It was often a dead card. To this end, I decided to go to 10 rack cards, with the Rack, Davriel, and Bandit. I might do 2 Bandit Talents, 2 Shrieking afflictions, but I'm not sure.

6 of the Rack cards have built in discard which should give me more consistent value. With 6 manlands as opposed to 4 manlands, this also means I have 16 sources of consistent damage as opposed to the traditional 12 sources of damage (tradition being 4 racks, 4 shreiking afflictions, 4 mutavaults).

I made what was probably a retard decision to not include Liliana. This is partially because it requires 2 black mana and I have 6 colorless. But also, I don't like how she requires me to discard for her +1. I feel like that is bad value. More of my baseline cards have discard effects and I have toxic deluge, so I think that will make up for Liliana's exclusion.

I don't know what decks to sideboard for or which cards to sideboard out for what. Anything related to the sideboard is a mystery to me. I do think Burn and Aggro might be a problem given toxic deluge and dismember in the deck, maybe that's what I should sideboard for?

Any thoughts on my decklist?

I told my chat if I went 4-1 with a more old school version of rack with less creatures and more removal I would play it in a modern challenge on MTGO... Guess I have to do it now!

This was a match vs a UW control player (if you know it is probably the worst match up). He decided to say gg and continue to tell me I should concede and how bad I was at the game. I may have egged him on a bit but the ending is pure poetry!

Yes you read that right. I ended up top 8 a challenge with 8 rack. I have posted the full challenge and think the deck may actually have something. I do want to add surgical to the sideboard again to beat some decks like goryos and titan which we ended up getting close to but losing to. Orcish bowmaster was a nice addition as a small removal and some decent pressure vs slower decks!

I play 8 rack or waste not every Thrusday on stream and last night after making some changes we went 5-0 and got a trophy. The video is the full league and has time stamps to show what each match up is if you have specific match up you want to see. Deck was fun and emperor of bones is amazing!

So I have been known for Rack and Waste Not gameplay over my streaming life. My chat decided to figure out a good list to play both! Our first league we played with it we won a trophy. I stream 8 rack every Thursday on my twitch stream. This is some highlights from it! Also tried to give a more extensive discussion about my deck and why you make some choices! If anyone has ideas how to improve the deck or cards I have not thought about I would greatly appreciate it.

I will be hunting for the "The Rack" card around my district first before trying to get it via overseas (I'm from Malaysia). At the moment, all the cards listed are the cards I have (paper MTG btw). Now for the questions:

• What do you guys think about my initial "8-Rack" Modern deck?
• What's the main idea of a discard/8-rack deck?
• How much discard spells are too much?
• How much creatures are too much?
• Should I get another copy of Lilliana?

My motivation to keep up with the modern scene was at an all time low. Every other match I watched seem to have the ring in it.

Now that it’s banned… I’d say I’m glad somebody saw the meta could use a little 8 Rack again.

On a side note, I know it’s been a hot minute since I’ve checked in. Honestly haven’t played in years, but 8 Rack was my first modern deck over a decade ago. It’ll always hold a near and dear place in my heart. Truly no other deck exists where you can just absolutely dismantle someone and almost feel bad, but on the flip side, play your very next match get destroyed and wonder how the hell it wins to begin with. It’s hot when it’s hot and oh my goodness when it’s cold it is positively frigid. She’s fickle, but that’s part of her charm.

I’ve warned several prominent 8 Rack Streamers through the years. “Don’t burn yourself out. Splash a color. Take a break. Shake up the main board” Streamers and players come and go with 8 Rack. It’s just the way it is. But nobody ever truly gives up on the deck… they just take extended breaks.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching this subreddit for several years now. I found it years ago with almost no members and sparse content. I was able to get her up off the ground and active. I still remember our big giveaway for 1,000 members. Good memories. It’s definitely dwindled in activity and I’ll admit that, but ultimately I think that’s ok. We will always be ready when the meta is right. You won’t expect us. You won’t see us coming. We might take down an FNM or top 8 at a tournament, but we will always be here waiting. Watching.

With all of us this to say, I’m glad to see RackCity active again. This was all a great moment of reflection for me and where we’ve come from. I hope you’ve all been well.

There is a lot of overlap between Legacy Pox and Modern Rack decks. All your Orcish Bowmasters, Thoughtseizes, Liliana’s Urborg’s, Urza’s Saga, Ensnaring Bridge, etc. transfer over to the Legacy deck so upgrading the deck is relatively easy.

Basically with a little add on cost, you can own Modern Rack and Legacy Pox at the same time and interchange it for the format you’re playing that day.

I saw a video of a guy that built an 8-rack video using Necrodominance to help avoid the issue that rack decks find where you just run out of steam and if you have not got your opponent to where they need to be you fall behind. Necrodominance seemed to help avoid this allowing you to return to an almost full hand. However, it also meant cards like ravens crime lost a bit of their punch and even smallpox pushed you back when you want to get to 3 mana for Necro.

My question is though, could this work? With a slightly different hand destruction package, and maybe even surgical extraction for the life cost to cast it etc. could you create a more control focused version of the rack? Or does the life cost of Necro just put too much of a clock on a deck that plays so close to the line already.

Or does Necro just ultimately work better with cards like Sheoldred and soulspike etc. where the life loss is mitigated.

I feel like you have so many dead draws when theyre hellbent and like geiers reach in historic, forcing a draw discard is pretty solid with waste not. In historic a lot of people tried running the alchemy 2 for 1 as well so there is precedent for this effect being alright. Of note, you force the draw before the effect so you get to see 7-8 cards on t2 and pick the best one you might want to cast over just trying to hose them. On the flip side 2mv TS is just bad and BB is real cost on t2. Anyway its 50 cents so clearly im the only beliver rn. Would love to hear others thoughts.

Shrieking affliction should now be thrown out in favor of Bandit's Talent -Potential 2 for 1, no more land sandbagging -dodges Leyline of Sanctity and Veil of Summer -Is a rack in itself (slightly less damage but is interaction -dodges chalice -let's you win top deck wars a lot faster -can be played t2 with saga
