Finished Ramparts of Ice. Misunderstandings fun. Love triangles (real or imagined) fun. Looking forward to the second half.

While I generally enjoyed how the relationships are portrayed - the miscommunications and the characters' own hang ups and the intertwined feelings creating both drama and comedy - I'm actually pretty indifferent to the main pairings as ships. I expect them to proceed as a matter of course for the story but I'm not particularly inspired to seek out fics or art.

[ramp]I think it'd be interesting if Miki and Yota don't end up together and seeing how they would try to manage their friendship in that situation.

Minato and Koyun are very designated main couple to me. If anything I feel like Minato's edges from his initial introduction got sanded off too much to facilitate making the relationship cuter. Sure it served an important part in establishing the distance or walls between the two that keeps them from openly reciprocating each other's feelings (Minato unsure and hesitant to overstep Koyun's boundaries and Koyun being insecure about the attention she receives from Minato and uncertain of how to respond to it), but beyond that it hasn't really been a prominent aspect of his character. It's kinda the same with Yota too, in that the initially established internal character conflicts for both boys end up getting subsumed by their struggles regarding their romantic feelings. For the girls those romantic struggles are bit more strongly tied to their character struggles.

First episode of Duke's Son shows how to take an interesting premise and turn it into a boring, generic premiere.

I'll sleep on the decision to watch the second episode to see if it gets any better.

3

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 5d ago

[Duke's Son] Ok, I get it. This girl's family is poor. You can stop saying it now.

[Magilumiere S2 ep 2] You know you're deep in the bureaucracy when you have to sign a requisition form to transform.

9

u/lalunafelis 5d ago

If you told me months back that my new laid-back comedy to relax to is about a horror-stock snek lady being menaced by unhinged GenZ/Alpha kids(but still has genuine fun with them), I would have laughed you off, but here we are.

5

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 5d ago

They did not believe when I said there was wholesomeness afoot with Dara-san. The Kujima to Dara seasonal pipeline is real, if only they give snake auntie a chance.

2

u/alotmorealots 5d ago

Which show is this?

4

u/lalunafelis 5d ago

Reiwa no Dara-san

2

u/alotmorealots 5d ago

Hmm, I'll give it a shot then.

link-for-the-likewise-lazy: https://www.crunchyroll.com/series/GT00377933/dara-san-of-the-reiwa-era

In my brain it feels like an unofficial sequel to the snake-fucking manga as her parent's story, so I shall wait for the first episode to disabuse me of this nonsense notion lol

3

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 5d ago

I know I'm a little late, but Magilumiere is back!

2

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 5d ago

They really should have recorded it.

Niko would be so upset to find out.

Finished Marriagetoxin. That last arc was a slog. Gotta sit through all the underwhelming battle shonen parts to get to the more enjoyable romcom parts.

Arashiyama's odds of winning the Gerob owl are looking pretty good right now though I still believe in Kinosaki supremacy.

8

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 5d ago

1st arc was 2 episodes. 1 episode worth of marriage, 1 episode worth of toxin. Very good.

2nd arc was 3 episodes. 1 episode worth of marriage, 2 episodes worth of toxin. Not great but the girl is cute so whatever.

final arc was 4-5 episodes. With 1 episode worth of marriage, and 3-4 episodes worth of toxin. Oh my god that was a slog.

I'm not sure if they're reading the name right, but the "Marriage" in "MarriageToxin" is meant to take up 60% of the name. Or alternatively, if you prefer the japanese spelling, the "マリッジ" in "マリッジトキシン" is exactly 50% of the name.

Clearly someone needs to be fired here. Rename it something like MarryPoisonous to get the proportions right smh my head

I've just started out listening to that 24 minute Odyssey song and I'm thinking "this is Dream Theater" but as I'm typing this is turned into TIE fighter.

edit: um, The Odyssey is about Greek mythology and so is the anime movie Arion. And Saint Seiya!

best anime of summer 2026

look inside

0 isekai; 0 ecchi

Mother's basement continues to drop the ball

5

u/Jusenkyo_5 5d ago

Bro could knock both out with Mushoku Tensei

5

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 5d ago

the isekai or ecchi ones are mostly on the bargain bin section at the end of the video

7

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 5d ago

Doesn't he intentionally mislabel his videos to outwit youtube's algorithm? "Best of season" are the forgettable series while "hottest trash" are often must-watch.

7

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 5d ago

Not really, the big shows are indeed there, like ghost in the shell, jaadugar, sparks of tomorrow, etc

3

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 5d ago

unfortunately, he really does seem to be stuck in that "i need to call the good shows trash and the trash shows good to show taste" mentality.

2

u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 5d ago

Haven't shared my rankings for last season here but since I'm almost caught up with the Spring part of Iruma and I'll be done with the Summer premieres tomorrow now's as good a time as any

2

u/NormalGrinn https://anilist.co/user/Grinn 5d ago

Genuinely like, what ecchi shows are even airing this season?

1

u/BarbaricGamers https://myanimelist.net/profile/HiIAmAnime 5d ago

KAMUI: He's Behind You

5

u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 5d ago

Dara-san of Reiwa from what I gathered but I don't think you got the right comment

7

u/mekerpan 5d ago

I don't see Dara as ecchi. The only nudity involves an ancient yokai/goddess. And it is more like nudity in an a long ago National Geographic article or a photo essay of classical sculpture

3

u/NormalGrinn https://anilist.co/user/Grinn 5d ago

fuck you're right, was meant to be the one above this

1

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 5d ago

You know, I wish people who engaged in my key visual post for "Do You Like Big Girls" actually watched the show...

2

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 5d ago

My tier list for this season. I genuinely feel like the "Am I out of touch" meme with the way people are talking about this season. Ah well a good season to join a fun rewatch or watch some stuff you missed out on.

12

u/zambonijesus 5d ago

You seem to have missed the best show of the season (Draw This, Then Die).

2

u/Specific_Frame8537 5d ago

I'm watching Black Clover for the first time.. when does it pick up?

I'm starting to get real sick of the guy going on and on about his sister and the little girl who keeps eating..

2

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 5d ago

I'm starting to get real sick of the guy going on and on about his sister

Unfortunately he doesn't really get better (I can think of exactly a single moment of his all the way in episode 150 that was actually genuinely good), but the show as a whole started clicking for me during the arc around episode 15 and just kept getting better from there for me.

3

u/Specific_Frame8537 5d ago

I'm on episode 30, I'm usually a huge shounen fan but idk this just doesn't hit.. the side characters just don't seem to have much personality beyond their one gimmick.

2

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 5d ago

Some of the side characters do get better development later on, tbf. I'd say starting with the arc you're on now, but that's Gauche's "big" arc in the spotlight and he doesn't really develop haha... so more like the one after the one you're on now.

12

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 5d ago

I think we have plenty of people already shilling it but I still have to say my piece about Draw This, Then Die!

It's AOTY material for me 3 episodes in, and I've shed tears this and last week. It's a brilliant move to put so much emphasis on Rei (the teacher) and I really like how this is going in the direction of drama/love letter to manga/the struggles of being a creative, rather than just CGDCT.

And yeah, Rei is an absolute standout character. The way the show portrays her mental chaos is just so well done and it made the conclusion of today's episode extremely satisfying.

The girls are fun too; and I really like the music during Kokoro's undersea interludes.

7

u/mekerpan 5d ago

Totally agree. One of the finest new shows of this season. Having dual leads one adult and one child), with their own intersecting stories works very well here.

9

u/zambonijesus 5d ago

There's only like 12 of us watching it, but at least we know how good it is.

2

u/alotmorealots 5d ago

Hmm, not too late for me to avoid Reflexive Contrarianism to Condensed Shilling Syndrome then! I shall give it an episode in between Oujovillainessing at some point.

6

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 5d ago

As someone who merely thinks it is very good and a watch I look forward to every week, I feel like a cerified hater

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 5d ago

One amusing thing with YumeMita is how similar Nonoka is to Kokoro from HHW.

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ 5d ago

4

u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 5d ago

Least surprising thing ever tbh. Hell, the first episode of Anohana already has a scene where Menma sits on Jintan's lap and starts shifting around and he's sexually pleasured by it. She can't go without involving a few erotic jokes at minimum, sex is clearly one of her biggest fascinations. I love Anohana but it does sound like they removed some of the sauce, I really want to see Okada just cook, completely unhinged without any intervention.

4

u/alotmorealots 5d ago

the drama included slapstick erotic elements in its original conception.

Hmm, so Anohana with a good serving of falling onto boobs, pantyshots and walking in on bathing/changing scenes? Or are we talking Menma as a pervy ghost?

I can't work out if that would be an improvement to the series or not lol

3

u/GondolaMedia zj: 5d ago

Simoun rewatch is going to get spicy it seems.

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago

Oh, Mari Okada wrote that? Lemme just take that off my watchlist, then.

2

u/cppn02 5d ago

She wrote a good chunk its episodes but she isn't the main creator. This dude is.

3

u/cppn02 5d ago

Today's episode not spicy enough with that flashback?

2

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ 5d ago

We have somebody promising to drop tomorrow. They really tried to tough it out, but Okada is too powerful.

4

u/GondolaMedia zj: 5d ago

And it was the first episode Mari Okada wrote, I can't even begin to imagine where the show will go.

3

u/Sandor_at_the_Zoo 5d ago

I dropped behind but if things will get crazy and not just spinning wheels boring I might try to catch up.

2

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ 5d ago

3

u/ActiveAd4980 5d ago

I'm finally watching Denpa Onna and while only at episode 2, I'm not really enjoying it. I might be just too old for it now.

And I know this is Shaft's thing, but characters here looks like they have extra broken necks.

2

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 5d ago

I was thinking about it the other night, and I do find it weird that so many of the “anime is not what it used to be” posts/videos/discussions/whatever seem to focus so heavily on Battle Shounen.

Cause if I’m being real about it, I actually think Battle Shounen is one of the few genres that is honestly probably better now than it has ever been. I mean I’ve now watched 2 of the 4 big Shounen from back then (Big 3 + Dragon Ball) and I doubt that either Naruto or DBZ is really gonna blow me away. While it is a bit of a balancing act, having those tighter productions does action quite well, and when you have a show with organic stopping points between (shorter) arcs, it can manage the seasonal model well.

Like the one outlier here is maybe Hunter X Hunter (2011) which is imo the best Shounen anime ever, but it’s maybe as much an outlier here as anything else. I mean Dr Stone was up in my “modern Top 50” for a spell, Dan Da Dan and YAIBA are up there now with room for upward movement as more come out, and CSM is real close to making that list if it can just find a cohesive vision for its art direction. That’s not even considering the crazy art direction we get out of something like JJK or whatever CyPic cooks up with Kagurabachi next year.

So like, if you’re gonna have the “anime used to be better back in the day” take, maybe pick a better genre to use as your example?

1

u/North514 5d ago

I don't agree there, I mean, not in the sense modern battle shonen are bad, however, if are discounting the actual adaptions (which sure were subpar) I am taking OP over any modern big battle shonen. Naruto I would take over most too, and Bleach did have higher highs than most of these works, even with it's many lows.

There are areas, that modern anime is shinning, and adapting battle shonen well, is notable however, I don't think the actual narratives of these works really absolutely kill it. IDK maybe it's because I just don't enjoy contemporary/urban fantasy as much, and that seems to dominate battle shonen now.

I still like most of the new big works, however, none of them are in my top 25, which OP is in. I don't think I am going to count JoJo since it's been airing for 14 years, and it is an old manga.

3

u/Charmanders_Cock 5d ago

I’m surprised you haven’t seen Naruto out of all of them. I would think it might be your favorite of the bunch given your tastes. I’d put it above One Piece and Bleach if only in terms of consistent enjoyment considering the length. I’m probably an outlier in that regard though. It’s also been years since I watched it so maybe I should revisit sometime.

If there’s one relevant aspect that I’d say I miss from older battle shonen, it’s the timelessness of their OST’s. Naruto’s is ahead of the pack in that regard alone. Not that newer battle shonen have bad OST’s, but these days I rarely hear background music that I’m later ripping to listen to on its own, play with in music production software, or see what mixes people have put out there. This is only considering battle shonen though. I find neat stuff all the time in other anime still.

1

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 5d ago

I've got either it or Dragon Ball on the agenda for next year, but I just don't have the time in my schedule (or the energy) to do two back-to-back. Haven't figured out which one though.

I got into anime "late". Most people I knew had been watching since elementary school, so getting into it at the start of high school felt like I was old. I kinda jumped straight towards wanting to watch "the classics" and with a planning list that grew too long too quickly, OP and Naruto kinda slipped me by (and Bleach still took like two years before I said "sure, why not").

1

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 5d ago

unforunately: ecchi

Im not sure where it all went so wrong that the boob hating tourists managed to convince the industry that nudity is bad, but we really need to get back on track and start having like 5 ishuzoku reviewers per season already.

Anime needs a saviour once again.

1

u/North514 5d ago edited 5d ago

Money convinces, not whatever "tourist" stereotype you have in your head. Reviewers likely didn't make much unlike Gushing Over Magical Girls. That is why it got a second season. The reality, is the money really isn't there. It's the same reason hentai productions aren't all that great.

And I hate most ecchi, and love nsfw content. I just don't go to ecchi anime for that because it largely sucks. You can have standards for even teasing content or porn you know. If it was actually good, I would be a huge fan of it. I like good nudity/sex scenes as much as anyone else. IDK why you hyper defensive ecchi fans, always imply, that someone not liking it, or most anime fanservice, means the individual is a prude....not in the slightest.

Anime is doing fine...it doesn't need a savior.

7

u/baquea 5d ago

It's purely down to personal preference, but I think something can be said about the appeal of the long-running battle shounens that people could watch weekly for years on end, which is lost in the modern seasonal model. In support of that, just look how One Piece remains incredibly popular, despite being the most extreme example of the old-school stretched-out style of battle shounen adaptation.

1

u/North514 5d ago

One Piece is popular because the manga is really good, and already had a massive following. Demon Slayer also was able to cultivate that, even if the run was shorter, literally only because the creator didn't decide to create a world/story that could go on for decades.

The model is irrelevant beyond the fact, OP's release format actually makes it harder for it to gain new fans, in modern day. Even when I first started watching, like 17 years ago, 300+ episodes was intimidating but it still wasn't longer than DBZ? You can't say that anymore. Now it's just One Pace or the manga. It's probably my favorite battle shonen, and it's hard to actually recommend to people, due to these pacing issues.

2

u/flamethrower2 5d ago

Would you rather watch episode 1 of 100 different shows, or episodes 1-100 of one show?

Don't answer that - it's a rhetorical question.

5

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 5d ago

I love Elusive Samurai but I felt this episode was a bit too exposition heavy for a returning episode after a 2 year break. Maybe this is nitpicking, but I feel like with how many anime there are each season, a show should try to get a better hook in, instead of info dumping half the time. That being said, I do feel like a refresher was necessary, so I guess it's fine to get it out of the way now, and the presentation is still really good and creative. That one cut to Takauji was terrifying.

Anyway, with this last premiere, that puts me at a total of weekly 11 shows this season. (with some others paused or stashed for later)

Tier List

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 5d ago

Umehara's team at Cloverworks really has been on a roll since Dress Up Darling S1. Each project they get better.

It's kind of interesting how this was how it was in the manga, but it felt like the perfect spot to start S2 to show the goal of this season and what is happening.

3

u/cppn02 5d ago

Thought my Jellyfin server got the wrong metadata again when the preview image was of the [Elusive Samurai] live action bit with the lady giving a short summary.

8

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 5d ago

Hayamin is obviously a great VA, but what keeps her from being one of my favorites is that she almost sounds the same in like 9 out of 10 of her roles. Which is why her role in Kore Kaite Shine is on course to become my favorite performance of hers, she sounds so incredibly different here compared to her usual asmr type voice, it’s fantastic. I’m actually forgetting at times it’s her who’s voicing Teshima which is something that’s never happening to me for her other roles.

5

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 5d ago

It’s not so much Hayamin’s vocal range that makes her one of the best VAs out there but her incredible acting skills. She’s exceptionally good at nailing the “assignment”. And I’m always impressed with just how much emotion that she can put into her lines.

6

u/mekerpan 5d ago edited 5d ago

Totally agree. She approaches her roles more like a top level stage or movie sctress. She mostly acts with her "natural" voice, and creates distinctive characters using THIS voice. No slam on those actresses who use a range of "adopted" voices effectively, but I might love the way Hayamin handles her roles even more (at least in many cases). This might be because I have a much longer acquaintance with stage and movie acting. ;-)

The key to Hayamin's work is the nuances used to create characters, rather than voice pitch. Perhaps it takes somewhat more careful attention to recognize just how detailed and thoughtful her characterizations are.

4

u/cppn02 5d ago

You're spot on. I think this atleast comes in part from her aspiration to dub live action movies rather than wanting to become an anime voice actor.

I know she has specifically mentioned Masako Ikeda as Audrey Hepburn's voice in Breakfast at Tiffany's as a major inspiration.

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 5d ago

Her role last season as Lord Storm Coffin was probably the best performance in a new show in a good while. Her role as Teshima is outstanding as well.

But yeah, many times she gets typecast as someone Yor-like since Spy x Family debuted. Utage in Tamon's B-side felt weird because in many ways she was using her Yor wise and I had to remind myself Utage was a high schooler.

Her perforamnce as Ryuu in DanMachi, Amelia in Iruma-kun, and Ononoki are my favorites from her.

5

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago

I thought her Utage was more Ameri or Yamato than Yor.

3

u/GondolaMedia zj: 5d ago

I had the exact same thought. For some reason I was checking her MAL-page (maybe it was because of Ogre's Bride) and I was shocked when I learned that she voiced Teshima as I can usually spot her instantly.

5

u/cyberscythe 5d ago

yeah, wow, i didn't know she was voicing the teacher, i thought she was voicing that other soft-spoken student

1

u/lalunafelis 5d ago

In case you're interested: A videogame example of Hayamin doing a "young person in a position of authority" role is Mitsuba from Super Robot Wars 30.

1

u/GondolaMedia zj: 5d ago

That's what I mean!

7

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 5d ago

Draw This, Then Die might be both my AOTS and hidden gem of the season. One huge thing going for it is that it speaks to manga fans. Interesting contrast to Egatae, which aired in Fall 2025. Which was more of an exploration of the industry of manga and less on the creation of manga.

While with Draw This, Then Die it speaks to those fan and why they love manga. The perspectives of Teshima, Yasumi and Fujimori are well written and explored in an endearing way that touches the heart.

It's rare to have a show that touches on the heart so much but is also very well written. I am curious how Sayonara Lara, Tenmaku no Jaadugar & The World Is Dancing end up since their stories are stuff they need more time to cook. These would probably make up my top shows of the season.

7

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 5d ago

Man finally it clicked with Draw this then die. I wasn't a fan of first 2 episodes and honestly I was just going in the 3rd episode to get it over with and drop it. But the 3rd episode was just something else. The comedy landed and the Teacher's story was really nice. Overall this episode's flow was so good with all the comedy and serious heartfelt moments. Really happy I stuck around coz instead of the usual 3 episode rule I have more of a 1-2 episode rule.

GoHands should try to make a fully 3D anime at some point to see how many computers they can melt rendering literally every single hair follicle.

Makes me wonder why they don't do this yet

8

u/tottoro47 5d ago

My wife crashed out yesterday while watching ReZero S1 Ep18. [Rezero S1, ep18 spoiler] After he said I love Emilia she turned off the TV and cussed him out lmao. She will continue to watch it but she says she needed a break. I watched it too and remembered how painful it was to hear him say it. But it was an important part of him coming back and his character growth

4

u/ptd163 5d ago

Tbh it wasn't that painful for me. [Re:Zero S01E18] The Rem that's in love with Subaru is the Subaru that's in love with Emilia. It would have never worked. However, I can understand people's reactions to that moment though. Emotions aren't logically and Subaru and Rem spent a lot of time together in S1. Please keep us updated on your wife's journey. Especially the moments in S2 and S4.

9

u/Jusenkyo_5 5d ago

Honestly I never minded this moment, I think it's odd to expect that [spoiler]Subaru should fall in love with Rem because Rem fell in love with him

Beyond that I think it's a role reversal from what happened in episode 12-14 with [spoiler]Subaru expecting Emilia to fall for him because he sacrificed himself for her.

8

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago

Honestly I never minded this moment, I think it's odd to expect that [...]

I think people may expect [Re:Zero]Subaru to fall for Rem because THEY fell for Rem.

(And by 'people' I might mean 'me')

9

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 5d ago

A reasonable expectation since [rezero]Subaru has spent a ton of time with Rem at that point meanwhile he barely knows Emilia at all.

3

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 5d ago

[Rezero]Today I don't really care about who Subaru ends up with but back in the day that was my main reason as to why I had a similar reaction as OP. At that point in S1 the show spent so much more time with Rem and her relationship with Subaru than Emilia's that I fully expected that Subaru must surely come to the realization that Emilia was nothing more than a teenage crush because she happened to be 1st girl. When Subaru said "I love Emilia" it felt like it wasn't Subaru saying that but Tappei, because he wanted him to go for Emilia even if it made so little sense after everything with Rem.

Frontier Lord won't appeal to everyone, but if you like goofy jokes and random moments of cuteness then it may appeal to you. I can watch this kind of show when I have stress, and then I'll laugh partly at myself for laughing at what I'm laughing at

Edit: Legend After 10 just charms me. I hope it continues with the absurd humor. Friday morning is my Thursday evening due to work schedule, but I have something to look forward to with these two and Slime.

The protagonist of Frontier Lord is a big, kind-hearted doofus and I respect that.

The latest YumeMita episode (Episode 5) was really good. 23 minutes vanished in a heartbeat. This is peak yearner yuri.

[Episode 5] I love that Ritsu has the "prince" role, yet she's the one being kept away from the MC and the one who needs rescuing like a princess locked away at the top of a tower.

It's kinda funny that despite Viola being the villain, she's still got so many people (myself included) rooting for her and making cute fan art of her. I guess only Bandori fans are deranged enough to do this. I mean, how can you not love her? She steals every scene she's in. The best villain of the season came from a girls band anime, and I hope some random obscure backwater anime site gives her the Best Villain award.

2

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 5d ago

I think Viola has genuinely done nothing but reduce my interest in the show.

[Yume Mita]Not only does she herself feel like kind of a trite yandere character, but her role in the story makes even other characters less interesting. They spent some time building up the idea that Arale used to have a bit of an attitude problem until it blew up in her face, and that she's now trying and struggling to grow past that, but actually it turns out she never did anything wrong and was just set up by the evil crazy girl. Ritsu wants to make up with Arale, and what's stopping her is not guilt or a lack of confidence, things she would need to overcome within herself, but the external threat of blackmail from the evil crazy girl. Arguably her guilt and insecurity could be part of what make the blackmail effective, but it still feels redundant.

2

u/oedipusrex376 5d ago

[YumeMita] Fair point. The way I see it, Viola exists as a plot device to keep Arale and Ritsu apart. Her existence raises the intensity of the drama by making it harder for Ritsu to simply meet up with Arale and make amends, while also giving Arale more to work through regarding her trauma. It's a melodramatic setup, and maybe even a little comical, but it gets the job done. More importantly, it establishes the central conflict very quickly, which is useful for a show that's probably only going to have 12 or 13 episodes.

[YumeMita] That said, I do agree the writing would be more interesting if they had committed to the idea that Arale genuinely had an attitude problem.

1

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 5d ago

Dunno, Viola may be entertaining but I still want to punch her and wish her the worst humilation in the end of the show (or better earlier).

u/oedipusrex376 5d ago

She's really good at her job, then.

I have to make a confession: I’m tempted to drop Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games.

The show feels way too much like Street Fighter commercial from Bandai Namco for my liking. Especially since I don’t really play fighting games myself, except for Super Smash Bros on the rare occasion.

If not for the possibility of these two girls smashing each other and me being a fan of Hasemi’s voice acting, I would’ve probably already tuned out by now.

I frankly enjoyed Rock Is a Lady’s Modesty better.

3

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 5d ago

As a fighting game enjoyer, one of the things I've been bumping into is that I want to watch them just run the sets. Obviously that would be way too much gameplay for a show, but when they show the start of round 1, cut to their eyes for a second, and then cut back to the game but they're already partway through round 3, I can't shake the sense that I'm missing out. I guess sometimes it shifts me out of anime-watching mode and into Street Fighter-watching mode, which maybe isn't the best thing. I hear the original had its own made-up fighting game, and I think sticking with that would have helped.

As for the comparison, this show hasn't done anything so far to quite match the energy of the performances from Rock Ladies, which was the biggest draw of that show for me, but I think I'm still going to stick with this one.

7

u/zambonijesus 5d ago

I'm not into fighting games and the best part of it has been how absolutely into the most technical details of the weeds it gets.

It's also more self-aware in a way that endears it to me more than Rock Ladies. Like explicitly calling out yuri shipping tropes in the most recent episode and mocking the Maria-sama-ish "White Lily" nickname.

It's actually a commercial for Capcom. If this was for Bandai Namco, they'd be playing Tekken 8 instead.

That said, as a fighting game fan, I've been enjoying it much more than Rock Ladies so far. The fighting game side has been surprisingly really good, and the terminology they use is on point.

3

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 5d ago

I don't know which one I'll end up liking better, but so far they really aren't very separated in my mind. I think both shows spend a little too much time showing the hobby and it gets a little boring. GGWP is still early days though.

The biggest thing GGWP has going for it over Rock Ladies is that it seems like it might have more yuri potential. Rock Ladies never really went beyond the most surface level bait.

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago

Even as a gamer (who doesn't care about rock) I preferred Rock Ladies, so I don't even think it's about the 'hobby' I think Rock ladies might just be better.

I'm still keeping up with GGWP, but I don't think it'll be as high on my list as I previously thought.

9

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago

I frankly enjoyed Rock Is a Lady’s Modesty better.

Amusingly, I feel the opposite. I haven't played a fighting game in decades, since my hands stopped working right, but I used to love Street Fighter II, Marvel vs Capcom, and Virtua Fighter back in the day, and this is the fun good girls being aggro series I wanted Rock Ladies to be. Looks properly gay, too.

1

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 5d ago

I’ve always been more into FPS and RPG-adventure games, so maybe that’s also why I vibe more with anime such as SAO: GGO Alternative and Shangri-La Frontier. Only the former show is a little bit gay, though.

1

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago

I played my fair share of JRPGs and MMOs too, but there are plenty of anime for those.

4

u/gothxo 5d ago

yeah, i'm enjoying this one a bit more than Rock Ladies so far. i'm a much bigger music fan than i am a fighting game fan too

1

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago

It feels like it's doing a better job of subverting Class S yuri tropes than Rock Ladies, which seemed to want to have its cake and eat it too. The girls here feel complicated and real and connected to the outside world. The girls in Rock Ladies all felt like caricatures out of private girls school central casting, which is fine if you're playing it straight, but an odd choice if you're interested in exploring the gap.

2

u/oedipusrex376 5d ago

Now you've got my attention. I've been watching MariMite for the Class S stuff and really loving it. Like you said, Rock Ladies' take on those tropes feels caricatured. A lot of the NPC characters just feel like props to hype up the main cast. That's a bit of a pet peeve of mine since I hate it when crowd/mob characters exist purely for exposition.

I've been avoiding Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games because I wasn't sure it was something I'd be in the mood for, but hearing that the cast has a bit more depth definitely makes me more interested.

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago

To be fair, only the two main girls have been really fleshed out so far, but even just the conversations with the mob characters feel more like how sheltered rich girls actually react to normal people stuff. I dunno, it's still early, but I like everything it's giving me so far.

2

u/zambonijesus 5d ago

2

u/oedipusrex376 5d ago

I think I'm starting to see why it feels more "real". That line makes it feel like the MC has actual concerns instead of just dealing with superficial status related issues.

2

u/zambonijesus 5d ago

For me it is less about whether the characters feel more real and more that the show comes across as so much more deeply genre aware.

5

u/alotmorealots 5d ago

I have never liked Street Fighter very much (being absolutely terrible at it whenever I tried it, back in the days of the coin operated arcades lol), but I'm having a superb time with the series!

Both the direction and character writing have been a real treat for me, and I've been mostly glossing over the fighting game aspect.

3

u/mekerpan 5d ago

Me too. I've never played this type of game, and much of the game stuff goes over my head. But I am enjoying this (just like Rock Ladies).

5

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 5d ago

Well to be frank this series really leans on the fighting game side and hobby part of the series. Which I absolutely love it for.

But it’s understandable that won’t be for everyone. This is one anime for me the voice direction is what I am here for and everything else is the cherry on top.

[Odd Taxi Episode 7]Very interesting play from Hiroshi to bring the younger brother cop into play. It's clear he has undoubted trust in his older brother. But you can tell he truly wants to fulfill the duty of being a police officer. It will be crushing when he learns the truth that his brother is actually working for Dobu. Though I do wonder the point when Hiroshi will betray Dobu. At the very least, Dobu kept his word, and now Miho is free.

[Odd Taxi Episode 7]Despite Hiroshi's claims of being able to spot someone that he has seen, it is a miss when the guy he spotted wasn't Tanaka. Still, he was able to easily recognize Kabasawa.

[Odd Taxi Episode 7]It was bound to happen, but Eiji finds himself heaped with trouble as the loans he has taken have come to bite him. As Shiho is part of the idol group and the manager is connected to Yano. Which now makes him an uncalculated part of Hiroshi's mission. Though not a surprise, Shiho feels guilty.

Apparently Red River is one of the worst anime of the season according to MAL. What's so bad about it? I kinda wanted to watch it but I have too many shows to watch already.

1

u/zambonijesus 5d ago

It's first episode ratings so will almost certainly jump up to 7+ at the end of the season once the people who watched the whole show rate it.

3

u/LittleIslander https://anilist.co/user/LittleIslander 5d ago

It's fine, but not exactly much special other than being, well, out of time. Very mediocre production and familiar story beats. Plus, it's a bit of a hard sell as your show of choice this season if you're looking for a story about a young girl in a foreign country in a historical setting.

9

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago
  1. MAL always scores shoujo low.
  2. It's a 30-year old manga with a dated art style.
  3. People have a low tolerance right now for handsy male leads.
  4. The main character is at the begnning of her character arc, and people are impatient to see her wise up.

7

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 5d ago

It’s not really bombing, just a quirk of MAL.

It’s only got about 1,000 votes, most of which seem to be in the 6-7/10 range. Nothing about the score seems terrible unfair in a vacuum, it just seems the show didn’t find that fanbase that will hype it up and balance out the scores, so it ends up looking worse by comparison.

2

u/TheDanubianCommunard 5d ago

Maybe because the protagonist's behavior and attitude I guess?

1

u/baquea 5d ago

Is it different from the manga in that regard? The manga has a score of 8.29 on MAL so it seems weird for the anime to be that disliked over the writing, unless it gets better later on.

1

u/Ok-Cod5254 5d ago

Well obviously the manga gets further ahead when she has already developed and the story is over. But for now, the score will fluctuate as it comes out. When people may be more favorable for those that stick around, then the score can rise.

There can also be fans of the manga that can think the anime adaptation could be underwhelming (ex: I hear some don't like the anime toning things down for some scenes), so it doesn't have as much support from its already established fandom on top of that.

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 5d ago

I would not take anime scores seriously on MAL. Manga scores have some merit, though ironically, and it helps me pick out what shows I end up trying when they air.

1

u/Mitsuyan_ https://anilist.co/user/mitsuyan 5d ago

It's not worth taking MAL seriously. For what it's worth, Mebius Dust is bombing in a way I've never seen an anime manage before, which doesn't even feel unfair to it

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 5d ago

Haven't seen episode 2, but even just based on episode 1, it is below 6, which is just bizarre.

1

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 5d ago

What's so bad about it?

Nothing, really? I guess some of those early shoujo elements might bother some people, but otherwise it's been fine imo. Even the production quality is decent (wouldn't say "good," but it's not bad).

Not the type of show I'd be going out of my way to shill for at the moment, but I'm enjoying it enough.

3

u/cppn02 5d ago

It's not really good imo but far from the worst. Maybe shoujo haters?

1

u/Ok-Cod5254 5d ago edited 5d ago

I mean I was interested in it as an old school adventure shoujo, but so far it feels pretty meh and reminds me why some tropes didn't age as well. lol

Doesn't have to be about being a shoujo hater of the whole demographic, as this series doesn't have enough of a hook or compelling characters so far. Obviously I expect it to improve more over time. Though the foundation for the start was weaker than I expected (from episode 2 specifically).

I think there's also not enough support from the fandom as they also maybe underwhelmed by the anime adaptation.

3

u/mekerpan 5d ago

Not a shoujo hater, just not finding any aspect of the show particularly appealing. Perhaps Hana Kimi is using up all my power to deal with really old-fashioned fare.

2

u/cppn02 5d ago

I mean I dropped it too but I just didn't feel it was so bad where I'd expect it to be among the lowest rated shows of the whole season.

1

u/mekerpan 5d ago

I ignore ratings, so angst over these flies right over my head.

I would compare this to MAO (which I don't think got much attention). Similar old-fashioned feel -- but somehow there was some real "life" in MAO that I do not find in this.

3

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 5d ago

Definitely not, because Stepbrothers Shoujo has a 7 and is lower in popularity and about stepbrothers. (It's good tho)

4

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 5d ago

2027 can't come soon enough for Clannad's 20th anniversary rewatch, obviously not enough of this subreddit has watched it if y'all allow the main heroines to go out round 1.

3-4 years in participating in Best Girl, I'm fully understanding the way of salt. I'm actually mildly upset xD

1

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 5d ago

As if the average person voting in Best Girl is actually gonna join the Rewatch

2

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 5d ago

I mean... we can lead an uma to water but we can't make them drink

2

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 5d ago

Kyou and Tomoyo’s loss does make me a bit salty (always happens when a main girl loses to essential a side character), but I will add that Nagisa got fucked by the seeding and was up against Jibril. Now it might just be my anti-Nagisa bias, but I think that’s a fair, if unfortunate, loss.

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 5d ago

From a historical perspective it's interesting to see how much Clannad has fallen off in popularity in recent years. The aggressive moe art style and the melodrama seems to be the reason newer fans don't seek it out, but if you go back to 2010-2014 After Story (correctly) was considered to be one of the greatest anime of all time.

3

u/baquea 5d ago

Finally following the trajectory of the other 2000s VN adaptations, I suppose. Air was in the top-50 most-watched anime on MAL through until 2011, and yet these days most anime fans haven't even heard of it.

1

u/Jusenkyo_5 5d ago

Wow that's actually a super crazy fact. I don't think any of the other Key IPs have aged as well as Clannad has so it doesn't shock me, but I am surprised that it was ever in the top 50.

3

u/baquea 5d ago

It wasn't so much due to Key as it was to Kyoani, who were basically at their peak popularity at that point. In 2012, 11 of the top 100 most-popular anime on MAL were by Kyoani (which includes every single one of their TV series that were more than a year old, with the exception of Munto), as compared to only 4 at present. And not just in terms of popularity either, but Kanon was in MAL's top-50 on score until 2011 as well.

2

u/BarbaricGamers https://myanimelist.net/profile/HiIAmAnime 5d ago

obviously not enough of this subreddit has watched it if y'all allow the main heroines to go out round 1.

Makes me so sad honestly.

There is an event called the Kyoto Anime and Manga Fair taking place in September. There's going to be a lot of announcements there including news about Alya, Frieren, Yuru Camp and interestingly the Eccentric Family? More interestingly, the exhibitors area has a few companies doing presentations. It's not that that interests me, it's the shows that are listed as the companies' productions that interest me. A lot of the shows we know have new seasons coming. Frieren, Dandadan, Yuru Camp, 2.5D...Haruhi? Shana?

I have a sneaking suspicion we're going to get some massive announcements during the weekend of the 19th-20th September.
