Any recommendations for new anime?
Long time watcher of various anime’s and similar animated shows that aren’t classed as anime.
I’m fairly mainstream when it comes to preferences, I like good fight scenes, mad power scaling, characters unlocking new forms or techniques or abilities and a decent plot with generally good artwork. Not so much into mega complex story lines or anime with tonnes and tonnes of filler (generally).
Unsurprisingly my fave types of shows include the standard popular stuff based on those preferences like Dragonball, JJK, Demon Slayer, MHA, Cardcaptors, Yu-Gi-Oh, Gundam, Neon-Genesis Evangelion plus a few more I can’t quite recall the name of.
Tried AOT but wasn’t a fan of the artwork (don’t ask why) so found it tough to watch but did love the storyline so working through it slowly.
Been recommended Bleach and Fullmetal Alchemist but curious if anyone recommends anything else too! Ideally something that doesn’t have like 20 seasons either 😂 Thanks!

Hunter x Hunter is my go-to recommendation for Battle Shonen type shows. Not the most mainstream of its genre, but it'ss something of a darling of the critics.
If you just want mainstream action, with an MC powering up, then Solo Leveling is the clear choice.
Since you mention likingvthe AoT story, 86 has a similar premise of a walled nation under attack of an existential threat, and an underclass fighting against it.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a good all-round recommendation, offerimg a slightly more emotional and chill take on a fantasy adventure (but don't worry, there's plenty of good action too)

This came up when my friend and I were watching Bookworm earlier today. How do endcards work on broadcast TV. Are you just expected to pause to look at them?

u/alotmorealots 6d ago
How do endcards work on broadcast TV.
Potentially good as buffers, given you can display them for a variable amount of time, and thus help the program that follows start at the precise time.
How often that's used on JP TV is beyond my knowledge scope though.
Are you just expected to pause to look at them?
Your ability to appreciate them or not is likely a much lower priority than the timing of the schedule, I'd say!

Just watched the finale of Steins;Gate!
[EP24] I was not expecting things to get quite so violent! I agree with Suzuha, that plan could have gone really wrong, but I had been thinking for the last few episodes that Okabe would likely be desperate enough to sacrifice himself to save both Kurisu and Mayuri. Glad it didn't come to that. It was a close call though.
The final scene reminded me a lot of [anime movie] Your Name when [spoilers for both] Okabe and Kurisu find each other again, and she still has faint memories of their time together. In both cases, I thought the story might end with the main pair alive and well but apart, and was glad to see my ships sail both times.
I enjoyed the story and it put a unique spin on the time travel narrative with the first half focused on the effects of Okabe and friends' escalating experiments, and then the [second half] has Okabe desperate to revisit the same sequence of events in reverse order to set the timeline back on its original course. From a meta perspective, it's interesting that this one started out as a videogame, because I can see how the story structure and branching paths would compliment the gameplay here. There were times when the story got, as Daru put it, a bit convoluted and abstract, but it was pretty good overall. Okabe and Kurisu are very fun main characters and I like their dynamic. The dialogue was great all around and felt like a believable group of geeky friends goofing off and getting in over their heads.
This was the top ranked show in r/anime's Favorite Sci-Fi poll, so I had high expectations. Personally, it wouldn't make my Top 10 in the genre, but it was still a solid 8/10.

Great to see you enjoyed it!
The final scene reminded me a lot of [anime movie] Your Name
Really interested to see how I'll feel about it on rewatch. Also, side note, sorry for totally missing the Penguin Highway thread! It's been a hectic week

No worries! If you have time to watch it later on, there's still a final discussion including all the movies at the end of the rewatch.
Just for the fun of it, what are some anime that would?
Full Metal Panic, Sword Art Online and Astra Lost in Space are among my top 5 anime in general and rare 10/10s for me. A few other sci-fi shows that I rated 9/10 are Planetarian, Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song- and my childhood fave Dragon Ball Z.

If you like my wallpapers, feel free to check out the album of 'em I made for this show alongside the rewatch I co-hosted back in 2021 (just stop at image #30 unless you don't mind spoilers for Steins;Gate 0 since that album has both entries in one).

So as isekai winds down a bit and we are getting the random betrayed by the party stories gaining steam what is the next trope filled garbage trend?
I am betting “trapped for xxx years I trained to get revenge” or whatever. We have one this season but there is a shit ton of manga starting to come out.
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 6d ago
I don't feel like these two are "winding down", it feels like they're still making as many as they ever made, only they're now also making more of other trends.
But to answer the question: Villainess anime, and "Dumped by betrothed" (often they have both plot points, but sometimes it's just one).

[Beck ep. 23]Swapping out the lyrics to I've Got a Feeling in the North American DVD release is one of the bigger travesties of anime licensing. It's also very funny because the subs have audience members talking about it being a Beatles cover still when it isn't anymore.

It's amusing how the production values of Black Torch are solid. Like, it's so weird. It's pretty cliché so far, but I don't mind. People are going to completely forget this show exists when Bleach comes back.

I doubt people would remember this one even if there wasn't any big battle shounen title coming back...

2 episodes through "The Forsaken Saintess and her Foodie Roadtrip in Another World". Hits the Campfire Isekai just with less budget, and it so far lacks a Sui-like character. Kind of reminds me, what if Mukouda stuck with the first party he met?
I will give it another episode, but I get the feeling with so many shows this season it might get shelved on my on-hold. With Elusive Samuari, Bleach and when I finish the "Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky" volumes right now, I am looking at 32 shows. Which is a lot.

The first ten seconds has two characters staring at each other, which might be some future event? Not that they do or say anything. And after the OP there's some fight sequences between about 03:15-05:00, which I guess are taken from future fights. If you'd be able to glean any actual spoilers from those fights, you must be a savant spoiler-interpreter IMO, as I'm barely able to interpret the Go-Handsy action.
5
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 6d ago
The fight montage teases the existence of the jester girl from the OP and a few future opponents for Elymas, but the [KnightHands] comically evil branch family daughter is as far as I can tell the only one that's not just some monster. But also, you can see it as an inevitability the first time the relevant character appears, so it's certainly not some shocking, tragic, series-ruining spoiler.
Also, I find the request to be weird. Flashforwards and in medias res are storytelling techniques and complaining about their existence feels like obsessing over spoilers gone hundreds of steps too far. Next you'll tell me foreshadowing and implications are spoilers too or what?
3
u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 6d ago
People are obsessed with not getting spoiled and having some sort of pure watching experience, and somewhere in there I guess the easiest concept to understand is to watch stuff in chronological order. Which makes sense in some ways, but also completely falls apart in a storytelling aspect.
4
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 6d ago
Yeah, if you're deathly afraid of spoilers, then it feels intuitive to go chronological... as long as you don't use your brain to realize it's agnostic to story structure and progression. I've seen multiple posts from people talking about Steins;Gate who either took or contemplated taking a 24 episode detour to S;G0 before finishing the show, and I find this very concerning.

Such a shame they don’t make good anime anymore, like everything these days is corporate and stale.
Remember when they made real shit like Chainsmoker Cat? Now those were the days. I remember it like it was yesterday four hours ago.

Finally finishing up last season's shows
Starting with [Nippon Sangoku]I am amused that it seems like this cour was just a prelude to the overarching narrative but it ends with one of the three eponymous nations already conquered
I enjoyed all the references and allusions, as unsubtle as they were sometimes. Despite being overt with them the show mixed things up well and never went for one to one homages.

I finally finished Kaleido Star, there were some pretty fun parts and Jonathan is the greatest animal character in history, but I really did not like Leon so the second half really dragged. There's apparently a couple OVAs, but I don't know if I'll ever bother watching them.
Edit: On reflection I'll probably watch this one, but not the Layla Hamilton OVA

Chainsmoker Cat is always funny, but a part of today's episode was especially funny to me for a 'meta' reason; In the previous episode thread, [Chainsmoker Cat]Landlord was laying on his back (I don't remember if he got knocked out or something), and I commented something like "I'm surprised she didn't throw her cigarette butt on him!", to which someone replied "Why? She's not evil..." And then in today's episode, she ashed her cigarette on him, threw her trash on him, spat on him, almost killed him twice (and dragged the body away), farted on his face, ate all his vegetables, and probably more things I forgot!
Also: I don't know if other people made the connection (I've only seen 1 person referring to it in the thread), but [Chainsmooker Cat + Breaking Bad]The 'recovering position' was definitely a Jane reference! Especially given they also referenced Breaking Bad in the OP.
7
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 6d ago
How is that supposed to be a BB reference specifically? It’s just the standard procedure to prevent passed out people from swallowing their tongues or suffocating on their vomit, no?
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 6d ago
Have you watched it?
[Breaking Bad BIG spoiler]One of the characters is on her back, puking from an overdose, and the main character moves to put her in that position, but changes his mind and decide to let her die. It's one of his first and most important "Evil" moments in the series (she's the girlfriend of his #1 business partner)
Add that to the fact that they have a Breaking Bad reference in the OP, makes it pretty obvious imho!
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 6d ago
Not sure if the dagger means people think I'm just imagine things;
The show that ALREADY referenced another moment of Breaking Bad, [BrBa/Chainsmoker cat]shows a scene of a girl puking as she's laying on her back - like in Breaking Bad - with someone else in the bed - like in Breaking Bad - and the key difference between the scene is that someone DID turn her on her side (something most people say Walter should've done in that scene which is one of the most iconic scene of the show, AND that the creator directly addressed by having them turn the baby to the side in an obvious contrast), and it's just a coincidence?
I mean, if the argument is "why would that be a reference, that's just standard procedure" we could say the same for the other 250 references on the show, like "Why would her throwing her cigarette before getting on the bus be a Fight Club reference, of course people will throw the cigarette away before getting on the bus, that's standard procedure!"
If we could ask the author, I'd 100% bet he wrote the scene with BrBa in mind, and given the 'deeper themes' in the story (when you strip away the comedy and the gross), I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote that as a way of saying "They might be addicts and not the greatest people, but they're at least better than "THIS" (doing nothing).

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 6d ago edited 6d ago
About your first reply: I did watch BB and I actually checked the supposed to be referenced scene on yt and I still don't see it at all.
hows a scene of a girl puking as she's laying on her back - like in Breaking Bad - with someone else in the bed - like in Breaking Bad
That's just such a generic and common occurence, not AT ALL unique to BB. Like yes, people on drugs who OD very often lie on a bed and very often with someone else. You could just as well say it's a reference to the dozens of other movies or TV series where that happens too, instead of BB. For the references in the OP it's undeniable since they use the exact same camera angles and all that, but this scene is just way too unspecific to be "definitely" a BB reference. That's like saying every anime where pirates are having a cameo are a One Piece reference since One Piece has pirates in it.
I would be with you if they [Yani Neko/BB]had Nishi stand there watching Aruko and not helping her for like 5-10 seconds, referencing Walt/Nishi being indecisive about whether to help Jane/Aruko or not. THEN it would be a 100% certain reference.
Like for something to be a clear reference the creators need to go out of their way with what they would usually do to proof the actual intent to make something a reference. That scene in Yani Neko was just the logical and expected turn of events in that situation with the use of the recovering position.
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 6d ago
I guess we see it differently!
Yes it might be a """common""" occurence (meaning, I've seen that in like 4 shows/movies out of the >2000 I watched? 4/2000 ain't exactly as common as breathing), but even if we do call it common...
The way I see it: Walter White's hat (apparently called a 'pork pie hat'), I've probably seen a thousand of those in random police/detective movies.
But if she put on a pork pie hat and some ominous music started playing, yeah I would call that a reference to BrBa as well. Even if music played a hundred times in these police/detective movies as they had that hat on.
Because the hat is iconic to breaking bad, so when someone uses a similar hat/ominous music, I would think they DID have BrBa on their mind when they added that. Even if hats and ominous music ARE as common as breathing.
I think the way I'd present that is..
Let's say the guy watched Breaking Bad. Whether or not you call this scene 'a reference', would you agree with the claim that: "He almost certainly thought about the BrBa scene when he wrote this one"?
Because unless he has a memory of a goldfish... whatever you call it, I would find it hard to believe he didn't even think about it. And once (if) you accept that "Okay, he probably thought about it", well I think you can start questioning whether he let BrBa influence the scene at all, or wrote it with that scene in mind - while not making them identical - which in my opinion would qualify as a reference, even if not perfectly accurate; A reference doesn't have to be identical (like the ones in the OP) sometimes it can be a play on the original, like what I said in my other comment about what could explain the differences (beyond just 'plot elements').
1
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 6d ago
would you agree with the claim that: "He almost certainly thought about the BrBa scene when he wrote this one"?
Nah. I'd say " There is a non-zero chance he might have thought about the BrBa scene when he wrote this one" which is way too little to label it a reference.
With that reasoning of yours it's like everything and anything you see on screen is a reference to something if you just put in enough mental gymnastics.
If you want to see it as a BB reference, go ahead, but I don't get where that confidence is coming from that it definitely MUST be a BB reference. There's enough "evidence" to make the claim not 100% baseless, but it really stops there.

Between TBATE and now Heavy Knight both releasing and being utter trash quality wise, what the hell are these studios thinking?
6
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 6d ago edited 6d ago
I don't understand how you can put GoHands unhingedness on the same level as a limp, bland and overwhelmingly uninteresting to talk about anime like TBATE. Say what you will about the studio's approach—there sure is a lot to be said about their swings and misses—I can't imagine grouping them with the bottom feeders because of how morbidly fascinating everything they make is.
2
u/seriousbusines 6d ago
Panning shots of his face for the 1209381029 time and watching the same zombies stand up over and over again is not much better than TBATE.
1
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 6d ago
Sure, that ep did pad its runtime (Masterful Cat did too, albeit more subtly with the repeated shots of the same crossing or sliced carrot usually being spread out across different eps). That's usual for their adaptations, which tend to be weaker than their originals.
Except, with taking that into account, the two still don't compare. TBATE doesn't ever do exaggerated camera movements and perspectives where the compositing team struggles to line 3d environments up with the characters. Or give characters an absurd amount of hair strands and actually try to animate them independently. Or rapidly pan around a fantasy town to the point it makes me slightly motion sick.
Even the first episode of TBATE had absolutely nothing interesting—for better or worse—going on, aside from mayyyybe the shockingly boring visuals of the OP. At that point it was obvious I should drop it and considering I've seen a clip of a fight from later in S1 where almost every shot was a still of a character holding a sword from a very neutral camera angle, I can with certainty say I made the right decision.
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 6d ago
Did the production for Heavy Knight crash after episode 1?
3
u/seriousbusines 6d ago
Episode 2, its a 23 minute long episode and you have to watch 10 minutes before you reach where Episode 1 ended. Of the remaining time maybe 8 minutes is new content.
Episode 3 starts with a minute of nonsense and then starts a recap, five minutes of watching before you reach Episode 2's ending. Then the "content" of episode 3 is reused animations, inner monologue and talking. The joke in the current episode post is that they didn't physically move further than the other side of the gate this entire episode.
3
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 6d ago
Aside from having rather long start of episode recaps, it's GoHandsing along just as expected.
3
u/mekerpan 6d ago
The "look" of this show doesn;t bother me (usually the case with GoHands, whose visuals I find interesting). But the writing/editing/story progression *especially in this latest episode) so far is drreadful.
2
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 6d ago
Yeah, I've come to the same conclusion talking w/ someone on Discord. The writing for their originals is exponentially more interesting than this aggressively by the numbers litrpg isekai story. Gods, I can't wait for the next original.

How does this show about a bunch of failures doing nasty ass shit just casually drop the most beautiful and atmospheric sunset I've maybe ever seen in anime? Yani Neko having crisp visuals like this left and right while being about these depressing subject matters yet presenting them in a mostly comedic fashion is the weirdest whiplash cocktail and I'm already hooked as fuck on that shit.
6
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 6d ago
Fully honest, I think that some of the sunsets in Prism Rondo looked considerably better than this. The background art for that show was something else. Magical Girl and Evil Lieutenant also had loads of truly stunning backdrops.

This was incredibly abstract and unspecific and does not seem to describe many current shows.
5
u/alotmorealots 6d ago
In my opinion, a huge number of anime nowadays are abusing the "sudden shock" effect just to evoke a reaction from the viewer.
We get it, killing off a character that you (the mangaka) made us fall in love
This is definitely not happening in a huge number of anime.
In fact, it's barely happening in any anime.
3
u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 6d ago
Honetly, I've been seeing this a lot more in live-action shows (sci-fi and action/suspense are two of my most watched genres) compared to anime. It probably has more to do with which anime you've been watching, because I can only think of a few offhand (Attack on Titan is the big one) with frequent/multiple surprising character deaths, and those are mainly war stories.

u/Clear_Event7275 6d ago

The final episode of Steins;Gate is showing on the Crunchyroll channel today!
After last week's batch ended with only one left over, I figured that wasn't a given (because it wouldn't be the first time they "forgot" to play a finale of a show I'd been following), but thankfully it showed up on the schedule.

Sorry that I brought up MT, which I don't actually think sucks or have an opinion about because I haven't watched it, I just used it as the example because I knew it would annoy you and that was kind of the point - people are inclined to react defensively to what they perceive as unfair attacks on things they like.
3
u/Jusenkyo_5 6d ago
You're good lol, my comment about MT actually had very little with the other ARQDT convo I had going on, it was the "I dropped MT, should I pick it back up again?" thread with 60+ commenta on it.
We're all in these threads willingly, I just don't like to get pounced on for not writing a full scale review for every show I make a value judgement on. If people want to disagree and have me explain my opinion I'm more than willing, but it seems nearly every time I say something negative people jump on it like crazy no matter how unanimous that judgement seems to be.
1
u/zambonijesus 6d ago
I assume the original post was due to the responses about Lazarus in the Watanabe thread, which is actually interesting because the initial response in r/anime to Lazarus was extremely negative, some of which was due to invalid reasons (released originally with only an English dub, was made for Adult Swim). I think that the loudness of the initial negative response was strongly influenced by the "invalid reasons," but also think the show had plenty of weaknesses on its own merits so this isn't me personally defending it; however, time has tempered some of that early negativity and there are people ready to go to bat for it now. The only recent truly 100% hated anime I can think of is One Punch Man S3.
2
u/Jusenkyo_5 6d ago
I feel you on this entirely.
My perspective on the conversation was that Lazarus is WIDELY hated, like this isn't just a me thing by any means. I thought that the show was so unanimously disliked that I didn't need to elaborate on the "why" behind it being disliked.
If you go back and read the reddit thread for episode 13 the sheer dislike people had for the show is wild to see. I am a progressive so I didn't have any issues with the themes of the story, but I personally saw so little to be excited about with the show that I didn't think it would be a controversial topic.
1
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 6d ago
... but they're also having a different opinion that you dislike on a topic...
I think everyone should be able to voice their opinion on any topic, except for the "these opinions shouldn't be shared" opinions. I don't want to pro-MT crowd to silence the con-MT side, nor do I want the con-MT side to silence the pro-MT crowd.
in other words I want the mods to suffer from moderating more of these unending debates0

I don't want it written into law by any means, as a fan I just don't want to hear the complaining or the defense from other fans. Hearing the justification for [MT spoilers]Rudy taking a second wife, Paul being a rapist, literally any of the questionable shit in S1 is just as obnoxious to me as seeing people act like you're Hitler himself for enjoying the anime.
You're framing it as the "right" to dissent or discuss, I was just saying that as a fan of the series it makes me cringe to see both sides of the arguments. I don't think that's an opposite opinion to what we talked about earlier even if it's adjacent.
I also feel like I'm being a little intentionally misunderstood so I'd rather just not speak on the previous topic anymore.

u/Successful-Ear977 6d ago
Forgive me because I have no context here but its sounds you like you made the mistake of trying to have a normal conversation about MT on reddit?
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 6d ago
Believe it or not, MT only came up at the very end.
I made a comment about how I don't like that you need to preemptively explain and defend yourself if you have a negative opinion on a show and that making any sort of value judgement without an essay to go along with it just devolves into arguing immediately.
Later on in the conversation MT came up because it's a show that I like, I just decided to delete the convo at a certain point.

Mebius Dust feels like the kind of show where you watch it every week waiting for the big thing to happen, and then when the big thing happens you realise it wasn't that big, and suddenly there's only two episodes left.

Finished TYBW part 2 and damn, those Squad 0 captains were really something. But wtf was that ending? The final eye catch of the season was actually [TYBW 2]Kon??!??

The staff did a little trolling to pad for time.
Anyways let me know when you're like, 5 episodes into Part 3, I should be able to share my wallpaper album with you then instead of waiting all the way until you're done with Part 3. Technically I think I could share it with you now, but better safe than sorry.

You should read the manga someday just because it is really funny to see how much Kubo clearly loves [Bleach Manga]Kon and was sad that he had to mostly relegate the character to in between chapter pages in the volumes.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 6d ago
lol what? Kubo's taste is a bit O_o
2
u/zambonijesus 6d ago
He clearly thinks he's really funny and it's the only place where he could do pervy jokes after the first 50ish chapters.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 6d ago
I'm glad better sense prevailed with the editorial team. Skipping most of the fillers meant skipping most of this and a few other characters that would've been grating in large doses.

u/zambonijesus 6d ago
My least favorite early manga character is the sexually assaulting lesbian stereotype character in the school friends group and I don't know how much she's in the anime.

where can i find a poster for "from country bumpkin to master swordsman" my daughter and i love watching this show and she wants poster for her room.
1
u/SlimeDNear 6d ago
Sorry to revisit the conversation but it occurred to me that you might be able to hit sites like etsy or elsewhere and find some unofficial fanart in poster form. Conventions also have artist alleys setup where people ply their works if you're inclined.
2
u/SlimeDNear 6d ago
Just for the fun of it, I did a quick search and found functionally no posters for sale. I'm sure others could search better but I'm guessing the show isn't popular enough to warrant poster sales outside Japan.

[Odd Taxi Episode 6]So we had Tanaka finally coming for Hiroshi. Though what is most interesting is the conversation between Hiroshi and Miho. It seems that Miho and Dobu were in a relationship for a while. It's difficult to speculate how to make Miho because is she truly sad, or is this more of what Dobu wants? Hiroshi is still a good guy for getting Dobu to eliminate Miho's debt. Only time will tell regarding her. Tanaka has now gotten Hiroshi and Dobu working together, which is interesting.
[Odd Taxi Episode 6]There are some various other elements in the background in this episode. Looks like Eiji is about to be drowned even more in debt. Also, it does seem that maybe Baba and Ruri are in a relationship. It would be curious if this has an effect on Ruri's fan and Baba's partner in a future episode.

Remember this press release from last October about some old stuff OceanVeil got. Well Starlight Scramble has been released making it the first time it has English subs.
Reading on JA wikipedia it doesn't seem the Peeping♥Video has made it (same goes for Japanese streaming) but I'm assuming that was a preview, behind the scenes, talk session and overview type thing (it is one of those dating sim game tie-in OVA* but sci-fi comedy military academy rather than regular high school high school).
*-It's so close to the game release it has to tie promo, media mix type thing.
Also just checking MAL profile:
Completed 498
I could make Starlight Scramble the 500th milestone* but I'm more inclined to choose Komekami Girls. Both fit the spotlight something that doesn't get talked about much.
*-It's semi-nonsense with how MAL splits up (or not) plus a lot of things I never bothered to mark as watched so I'm already over (I usually wait for things to show up in quick add but honestly saying I've watched say, Kemonozume or Otoboku is meaningless as I either can't/barely remember a thing about them).

So far I don't mind the 'change' in Clevatess; I think my only nitpick is that they're introducing a bunch of characters (presumably many of them recurring) and I've never been a fan of mass introductions of characters, I much prefer when they're slowly introduced over time while they merge (join, or oppose) with the main group we're already familiar with.
But under these circumstances, I think they're doing a fair job of it, we already 'size' them all pretty well!

2
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 7d ago
I mean, it's going down a well trodden path, with all its tropes and trappings, including all the side characters being exactly what you'd expect from that genre.
I'm sure it'll have some interesting twist on it eventually, but for now, it's pretty much by the book. So I'm gonna leave it until it's done, then check back in.

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 7d ago
I had a minor complaint while watching, which was some of the names sounding weirdly silly for a show like this. There's a dour-looking guy that they named Lang Feiss, sounds like an Eminence in Shadow character. But I can't get too mad about something like that in a series that wasn't originally in English.
3
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 7d ago
If you asked me to explain my thoughts in further detail, I couldn't, but the OPs of Lucky Star and Akiba Maid War sound kind of similar.
2
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 6d ago
What do you mean? It sounds nothing like out of touch!
(Oh hey, today is out of touch thursday!)
2
u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 7d ago
Hmm, I do think you're onto something. The "maid idol song" that forms the core of the Akiba Maid War OP is trying to evoke the same style of moe-core that Lucky Star's OP is. Add to that that both are kind of covered in a wall of sound of other instruments and a bit of distortion, and I can see where you're coming from.

So finished Fish Man Island Remake of One Piece. Well i am just gonna talk about how it looked. The comp wasn't good like the colors looked weird and there was this grainy or something filter on it. Plus they didn't add much to fight animation like it was pretty bare bones. Then I watched the ep 579 of orginal and that was much better (how i missed this comp and overall asthetic). So yeah apart from solving pacing issues its not that good visually.
Anyways watched the first 20 mins of Z movie and it looks awesome.
3
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 7d ago
You'd think a recut version of Fishmand Island would be an easy slam dunk, but they managed to screw it up anyway. The editing looks like it was done by someone who keeps subs in AMVs, and the composition was trying to mimic Wano (that's where the filter comes from), except at least in Wano, it actually fit the aesthetic of the arc.

I'd rather take "X show sucks" than see someone explain their reasoning for disliking a show and have it all be based on the wrong reasons. That's the kind of thing you can't let go of. You end up making enemies that way.

I do understand why a person feels the need to criticize a given show, but I must say I enjoy people gushing about a show much more.
Not only is it more pleasant to read, it might get me to watch the show myself, while a criticism only encourages me to keep looking, which is a passive and dissatisfying outcome.
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 7d ago
I mean, for other anime, it's difficult to be positive on. For so many generic isekai and harem series, if the series is actually even decent, you have to justify it.
So it goes both ways, tbh.
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 7d ago
In a general sense I find it very hard to be negative about certain anime online as you always get one or two people that think it's the greatest show of all time.
But that's precisely when you should be negative about it;
What's the point in hating something, if you're not ruining the fun for someone who does like it, and picking up a fight?

Personally, just seeing a "X sucks" with no explanation makes me feel infinitely worse than seeing a well reasoned explanation of what didn't work for them. The former feels negative for the sake of it like you're trying to make people feel bad, the latter feels like just a normal discussion about a show you watched.
1
u/zambonijesus 6d ago
I just think that the person saying it is a moron with bad taste so it doesn't make me personally feel bad other than for them for having such bad taste.
1
u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 6d ago
Seeing a moron with bad taste makes me feel bad, lol. Not for myself, or even for the take, but for what appears to be targeted negativity designed to make people upset. Less about what was said and more about why it appears to have been said.
3
u/mekerpan 6d ago
Saying something "sucks" is, however, pretty useless. Saying "it didn't work for me due to {reasons}" sometimes gets some useful responses but (in some cases and places) plenty of down-voted nonetheless.

u/mekerpan 6d ago
Saying something "sucks" Includes a clear additional subtext -- namely "and if you think otherwise you are an idiot". It is aggressively confrontational. That is why it gets more push-back . Someone praising nice aspects of an overall mediocre show is a very different sort of thing.

Saying "this anime sucks" about an anime that people like isn't being mildly negative and anyway is treating your subjective opinion as objective fact when what you really mean is that you do not like it. Anyway, what are you personally trying to get out of posting that an anime sucks if not a fight on the internet?

2
u/zambonijesus 6d ago
I guess my issue is you always frame this complaint as you saying "this thing sucks" and getting pushback because "this thing sucks" has no particular value as a posted opinion and obviously makes someone who likes it defensive.
If I came and barged into somewhere you were and posted "Mushoku Tensei sucks" with no further elaboration, what would your immediate reaction be?
→ More replies (0)4
u/wloff 6d ago
I think people are just not particularly passionate about shows they consider "meh". If someone considers a mediocre show the best ever, whatever, they just have bad taste.
But if someone shits on a show you think is a masterpiece? It's like a personal attack, not just on the show, but you and your taste. That requires a counter-attack!
3
u/mekerpan 6d ago
Speaking solely for myself -- Actually I feel there is a big difference between hating a show and giving reasons for this -- and saying a (beloved) show sucks. I may actually respect the first sort of post (even if I think it is utterly wrong-headed). ;-)
2
u/mekerpan 6d ago
I have no problem seeing people praise shows I don't like or have no interest in -- though I tend to skip over most of these comments.
Stating one's praise is sort of looking for positive affinity. It isn't the sort of thing to raise most peoples' ire -- even if they totally disagree.
