so i had duty today, up at some insane hour, riding to the hospital half awake on my bike and the city’s still dead quiet. lucozade comes on shuffle and like i’ve heard this song a hundred times before, it was just background noise honestly, never actually sat with it
idk what happened today but it just hit different. maybe it was the exhaustion, maybe it’s cause i hadnt had coffee yet and my defenses were just. not up. but that haze he keeps talking about, the numb blacks and grays thing, i wasnt just hearing it i was literally living it on that bike at that hour
and theres something no one really tells you about this job, youre running on like 3 hours of sleep and somehow still expected to be sharp enough that someone doesnt die on your watch. every decision you make in that exhausted haze actually matters, its not a metaphor for me its literally someones vitals ticking down while my brain is trying to function on fumes. so hearing a song thats literally about mental fog and losing your grip on reality, while im out here trying to hold onto MY grip on reality for the sake of someone elses life, hit way too close
and then i found out the whole song apparently came from a real moment, him on a break in some london studio mid meltdown from the 1D to solo transition, just grabbed a couple pink lucozades to cure a hangover and it turned into this. that got me more than it shouldve. like it wasnt written as a Concept, it was just a guy trying to cope in real time and it became art almost by accident. thats basically what im doing right now typing this out on 2 hours of sleep instead of sleeping when i get the chance lol
and then theres that bit about being sad over stuff that never even happened?? that got me a little more than id like to admit too. ive been working on this poetry collection for almost a year now thats basically about exactly that, grieving versions of yourself that didnt get to happen, and hearing someone else just say it so plainly kind of caught me off guard
anyway sorry for the essay, wasnt expecting my commute to turn into a whole feelings thing but here we are ig
PS: typos, im tired leave me alone

So yesterday I was at Burger King, and mid way Love Like This started playing. I quite shocked hearing a Zayn song, that too an underrated one, in public.
