Introducing u/QuinnFromVivint, your resident expert on everything Vivint!

Hi everyone,

We want to introduce another way that we are going to start replying, assisting, and engaging on r/VivintSmartHome and other subreddits.

Vivint customers have been talking about their systems on Reddit for years. You’ve been asking questions, troubleshooting issues, and sharing honest feedback. In the past, there were unofficial interactions with employees here, but now we’re showing up for those conversations more directly and consistently than ever before.

You may have seen official posts and comments here from u/Vivint, but we’d also like to introduce you to u/QuinnFromVivint, who's ready to answer your questions and give support wherever it’s needed.

What this space is: a place to ask questions, get clarity, and share feedback (good or bad!) directly with us. We’ll jump in where we can to help, explain, or point you in the right direction.

What this space isn’t: a replacement for official support channels, a place to discuss unrelated products, or a sales or marketing feed. Not every question can be answered publicly, but we’ll always be transparent about what we can and can’t help with here.

This is meant to be a constructive, respectful space, and we’re here to listen first. If you have questions, ideas, or feedback about your Vivint experience, we’re glad you’re here and we’re looking forward to the conversation.

We’re excited to step into this new chapter with you!

Post image

I bought the sensors on Facebook marketplace along with a smart hub a factory reset the Smart hub and I’m using it with two gig sensors it came with these Vivint ones, but I couldn’t get them to pair. I’ve tried a lot, but I don’t know if you can factory reset them or not. I’m looking for some assistance.

Vivint is Horrific

Recently, I had Vivint install a security system in my home that I just moved into. While doing the install the technician recommended I install smart thermostats that would work with their system, he recommended the Google Nest Learning Thermostats.

So I purchase said Thermostats, install them, they will not connect to the system. So I call Vivint, they advise me these are no longer compatible with their system, despite it being in their website that it is, as well as their technician advising me to purchase them. So $400+ dollars later I have thermostats that don’t work on the smart home system, which was the only reason I bought them.

Contact customer service provide them with the screenshot of their own website and the text messages from their technician they tell me initially they will refund the money in 7-10 days. That time goes by, and nothing, I follow up and they offer me $40.00 for my “inconvenience” this is obviously unacceptable, so they up it to $100.00 so I’m out $300.00 completely due to their error.

Almost comically bad customer service.

Second camera? Aftermarket?

REPOSTING BECAUSE AUTO-MOD WAS WRONG:

We have a single doorbell camera, installed as an incentive when we switched electric billing companies (Texas). We're looking to have a second camera installed in our back alley. Are there inexpensive, compatible cameras that I can install?

There's a flood light at the back of our house, so I should be able to tap into that if needed (BZZT!), or we can figure out a solar or battery powered solution.

We don't currently pay a monthly fee. When it was installed, it was explained that as long as we stayed with our then-new electric billing company, there would be no fee for basic service. Then we got charged $7.99. We called and got that charge removed and the ongoing billing no longer occurs. We just want to have a record of activity near our house.

Thoughts?

Is this installation acceptable?

Today I moved a Vivint system from a rental to my main home and I noticed after my tech left that my Vivint doorbell was installed creating a large opening in the brick, with much more chipped masonry around it and a gap that’s much bigger than the mounting bracket. The wiring cavity is exposed behind the doorbell, and it doesn’t look like a finished installation. I am concerned about water filtering and insects into the wall. Also I believe my HOA will have an issue with this.
Has anyone had Vivint repair something like this or install a trim plate? Did they consider it an installation issue? What are my options? Thank you.

Vivint wasn’t able to install doorbell camera

Got the new panel and new doorbell camera. Day of install tech said he couldn’t install doorbell camera properly because it didn’t pass the power test. It would get stuck on a purple ring on the LED.

Tech left some vague advice like get an electrician to fix the chime box or transformer. What’s interesting is over the phone the support said a note was left about the chime box. But in person he said it could be lack of 16 volt constant or lack of power to the wires, nothing about the chime box.

What exactly do I have to do to get this doorbell installed? Or what can I tell my electrician to do?

Moving Glass Break Sensor

Vivint installed the glass break sensor on a kitchen wall. I want to move this to a different location, for two reasons: First, this location has resulted in a few false triggers, so moving it a little farther away might help. Second, the walls will be painted soon, and most likely the sensor will not be needed before the next time the room is painted. So, is the a DIY project? Is there anything that should be considered before moving this?

So I've got lots of networking experience so I know how to connect cat5e and RJ45 with the bridge. I've got all that connected to the panel and working. Now my question is, what types of screws/anckers so I need to install this thing onto stucco? Thank you!

This is not what I was promised, I was misled

I initially felt I was misled by the sales rep who sold me the equipment.  There was predatory behavior that took advantage of my situation.  A line of credit was opened to pay off equipment that has had constant issues and flat out does not work.  I have called countless times and had multiple repair techs out and my system still does not work.  Today's tech said he did all he could but could not make the system work.  He also said it was installed improperly.  I am stuck with equipment fees, a subscription, and a line of credit for equipment that does not work.  This situation has led to stress that is leading to autistic burnout and shutdown.  I cannot function.  I have been crying for weeks over this situation.

In addition, my heart condition has been flaring from this, leading to me nearly passing out on multiple occasions.  What is more, I cannot have my service dog out when techs are in the house. So if I get light headed...I'm screwed.  I cannot afford equipment that does not work.  I have tried to make it work.  It doesn't.  Nobody can make it work.  Today's tech essentially gave up.  I am burned out from the constant calls to Vivint and techs coming out.  I have taken so much time off from work to be told "it was installed wrong, it's broken and we don't know why, we cannot help."  I want this all to go away.  I was misled, have tried everything to make this work, and I am still left with defective equipment and payments for them.

Edit to add: As an FYI: for anyone with a service dog, Vivint has stated on a recorded line that when any tech comes to my house my service dog must be put away. My service dog is a medical device trained specifically for my heart condition. They have been putting my health at risk. This is against the law.

Vivint blind zone

Our Vivint installer said they couldn’t install cameras pointing at a blind spot outside of our house since it requires a plug on the other side & we don’t have one. Since our Vivint installation, we had 3 distinct security instances that the cameras didn’t catch. What can we do?
- Do we get a third party battery-powered camera to record that spot?
- Should we bring Vivint out again to find alternatives? We live near a major street and this is making me regret going with Vivint since they are wired-only…

Is this normal for the fan to turn on and off so frequently? Just bought my first home and installed Vivint thermostat (came free with electricity company)

My electric bill is already trending high 62 kWh per day and we’ve only had the house for 4 days. It’s a brand new house with energy efficient features like spray foam insulation and a dehumidifier in the attic. Could this on and off fan state be the reason it’s high?

Severely creeped out door to door.

Today I had a door to door salesman for Vivint come to the door, the first time they have come to my home. Was a nice enough guy although made some off color jokes about the system being able to shoot people from the camera? I told him I thought that was odd. He then asked to come inside and I said no, I’m newer around my area so I thought I’d be polite and hear him out and let him show his stuff. He then asked to come in for water and I told him I’d get him water but insist want him to come in, he then started asking about when my husband worked. I asked to be able to show the stuff to him another time so he said he would send over the details from his device to my phone. I said in the moment “I’m not about to start getting follow up texts right? cause that’s how you lose my business” and he said not at all. Why is it now 9pm and he is texting me to ask when I want him to come over? I simply replied and said I’m not interested but this feels so wrong? I’d never heard of the company not now I’ve looked it up and seen so many bad reviews. Not a great impression

Backyard camera not detecting people

It detects when my car pulls into or leaves driveway, but does not detect my comings and goings from the house even thought fully with detection zone.

Which is funny because my front yard camera thinks my stationary side table is a person...

Camera resolution choices

Hello folks. For Vivint Camera Pro 3, in my system with Vivint Smart Drive, should I set the resolution (Quality & Bandwidth) to Medium, High, or Highest. I have Verizon FiOS, 500 megabit. I live alone so not too many draws on the bandwidth. Thoughts?

Why does my detection zone keep jumping?

I was trying to move the zone perimeter around a little bit and it started jumping around like crazy, even going into a part of the app that's not the camera area. Also, some of the red dots aren't responding to my touch and won't move. Last pic is a crude drawing of where it has normally been.

Automatic light system?

I am a (new) night shift worker and I was trying to find a system to automatically turn my lights on in the morning since I have trouble waking up on time. I also have the Vivint smart home system. Any idea how I can set my lights to turn on automatically with the smart plug?

Vivint DVR service doesn't work most of the time.

What the title says. When I try to go back and watch the camera DVR that I pay for monthly, it just keeps loading and won't load any of the previous footage. I've only gotten the service to work a small handful of times. I can upload a video showing exactly what I mean. You can click on the camera and view the live feed, but when you try to watch the recordings it just loads/buffers indefinitely.

My ISP is T-Mobile fiber and I have a 5gbps connection for my very small home. Connection should not be an issue at all.

This is very frustrating to pay for a service that doesn't work. The security system I have has been VERY sub par and lags like a windows 95 PC on dial-up. I'm pretty sure I'm going to switch from Vivint soon.

The good, the bad, the ugly

just got Vivint installed, still within my three day window for trial.
Wasn’t happy with the price, my sales guy came back today after negotiating the price down (another issue we had) with not too bad of an offer.
But I want to know, does anyone like their service?
As most humans do, we only ever complain about things online and I want honest feedback back.
Thanks everyone!

App Issues

Anyone else having issues with the app loading video events? Wasn’t having issues and then clicked a notification of person seen on my front door bell camera and i got a weird error message that they were experiencing a glitch and to try again. Now it won’t load anything but the live stream camera, nothing else connects or loads historical event videos.

Vivint is Fraud!!!

I already had ADT system and I pay $59.99/ month for ADT service. A sales representative came to my house and told me he was giving Vivint for same price and same equipment experience. He stated that equipment and installation services are free of cost. He gave us 7 day trial period. We didn't like door and window sensor coming to the box technology Vivint had , so we tried to get rid of Vivint during trial period. But the sales guy said he has retention budget and will give us Vivint window and door sensors free of cost with that retention budget. But that was a LIE! Vivint charged us $139.16 and $38.09 on June. And on, May, they charged us $289.15 and $38.09. After contacting customers service numerous times, the loyalty department finally contacted my sales guy, Ray Zhang and Ray lied outright saying he never said anything was free. And they cannot help me with charge that was promised $59.99. So I am stuck with paying about $300 a month when I was promised $59.99. The sales guy and Vivint together has committed fraud.

How does Vivint wire indoor doorbell chimes?

The previous owner of our house had Vivint installed. I thought I had removed and fixed everything but apparently whatever they did to the indoor doorbell chimes caused our handyman to throw up his hands and say he couldn't fix it. Now we're stuck with a doorbell that doesn't have anything to ring.

Anyone know what they might have done and how to fix it?

I accidentally deleted the doorbell camera while trying to reboot it, dumb i know lol, and after pairing it back it looks like this now. No preview on the app, home panel, nor my notification center (ios). The doorbell also doesnt ring even after i adjusted the settings, but It does display the live feed and sound when i open it up.
