How does Sidephone select which apps to add to the App Library?

To feature an application in the App Library, it must be an active project, it must work well on Sidephone's hardware and software, and it must be available for Sidephone to download from an official source. The team then works to determine if it aligns with Sidephone's ethos and the community's values.

The goal of the App Library is to provide a few additional tools, utilities and media to make using Sidephone as a primary device more enjoyable, without detracting from the overarching project objective of helping people reach and maintain a deep level of focus and intention throughout their day.

Will Sidephone's supported app list change over time?

Yes, the official list of applications that Sidephone supports is expected to change over time as we expand to more regions, develop more partnerships and create more apps of our own. We do not intend for Sidephone's App Library to have thousands of apps; only core essentials and a few extras.

Can apps that aren't in the App Library be added to Sidephone?

Yes. We recognize that essential tools are different for everyone. For this reason, we have not added restrictions that would prevent 3rd party applications from being added and installed. Sidephone uses AOSP as its base.

Before adding applications, please ensure that they were obtained legitimately. Apps that rely on Google services to function (eg. certain health apps, payment apps, communication tools, transportation apps) will not work because Sidephone is de-Googled. Please note, Sidephone cannot guarantee or be held responsible for experiences that you have as a result of installing 3rd party apps, as these are outside of our control.

Why is Sidephone de-Googled?

We did not wish to have Google's hardware and software guidelines (eg. minimum 4 inch screen size) restrict Sidephone's design and development. Creating a truly different mobile phone required us to untether ourselves from existing ecosystems.

Are all apps visible in the App Library?

To keep Sidephone's OS clutter-free, and to keep unwanted apps out of view, each supported app is organized within an 'App Pack'. All App Packs are hidden by default. To enable an 'App Pack', you must scan a QR code, which then reveals all applications within the pack for installation on Sidephone.

Is it possible to use web apps in the browser?

Yes. A number of web apps are available via Firefox & Vivaldi that we have not included in our list (eg. ClassPass, Libby, Cryptee, Pocketcasts)

Location not working

HI,

I just received my sidephone. Overall I'm happy with it, and am learning to adjust.

I have noticed that both Maps and Organic Maps apps cannot locate me, even though the GPS is on and location is allowed. This has happened both inside and outside, at different locations in Paris.

Has anybody noticed this issue as well ?

Improving Sidephone Support

Hi everyone! We appreciate everyone's patience as we continue to ramp up Sidephone support to deal with the inflow of messages received. A wonderful support and aftercare experience is something we're interested in maintaining as Sidephone continues to grow.

Over the past few weeks we've been thinking more about how to improve lost parcel claims, returns shipments, warranty issues, US SIM card replacement workflows and more. We feel like we're arriving at good places, but they've taken a bit of time to think through and fully implement.

In June/July we incorporated a number of self-serve flows to ensure order cancellations and order edits no longer relied on support, allowing for quicker resolution times.

Into August, we plan to expand self-serve flows into warranty and more. We'd also like to get back towards a world where incoming messages are responded to faster.

We're hoping the above helps to show our progress, but we're also cognizant that that doesn't solve issues for folks still awaiting responses.

If you have a pending ticket open and awaiting response, the team is working to get to it as soon as we can. Those of you that have dealt with Sidephone support know that we'll always do our best to get things right once we do reach your request (s/o to Mary, Nata and the team). We genuinely care about the experience everyone has with Sidephone and we'll work our best to continue improving all parts (software, support, and more)

Classic Keypad not working

I recently bought the new classic keypad with the Dpad and it arrived yesterday. I love the keypad but none of my key presses are working. I have tried rebooting the device a few times and I have taken the keypad in and out but it isnt working. The old T9 keypad still works so I know it's not the phone. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi everyone, when I start up the phone it goes to some kind of rickety android OS rather than the setup wizard that is in all of the videos (photo attached). Can’t scan codes, can’t set anything up. Anyone else in this situation? Any solutions?

SOLVED: They’re sending me a new one. Basically instantly. Great customer service once they were notified of the problem.

US Sidephones Clearing Customs

Following the press release last week that estimated phones would clear by Monday 7/20 or earlier, I'm curious if the US sidephones ended up clearing customs and made their way to the Texas warehouse yet.

Can't wait to receive it!

No notifications for Signal

Hey guys. So I got my Sidephone a week ago or so and although switching over from an iPhone is a bit tough from times, I'm really enjoying it so far. So kudos to the team!

However, I do have an issue with Signal where I don't get notifications on my Sidephone. Battery is set to unrestricted. When I look into the notifications settings for Signal, it shows a ~6 notifications per day message. I just don't see them though.

Does anyone know what I can change to get notifications? If it matters: I'm using the Olauncher.

One more thing that could be the cause is that I hid the constant "Background connection" notification. Maybe with that I switched off all notifications for Signal. I enabled it again, so maybe that helps.

//edit: Just saw the new release with a "notification bug fix"... so I'll report back

//edit2: It was in fact the notification bug. So upgrading to the latest version seems to have fixed the issue :)

Sidephone Software Update(s) v1.0.5 & v1.0.6 -- New Update System

Hello everyone!

Sidephone has a new update available (v1.0.5) that can be installed by going to Settings > System > Updater. After v1.0.5 is installed, you will be prompted via notification to install v1.0.6.

What's New:

For users in all regions:

We have successfully migrated to a new update system (hence the double update). This new system has several advantages over the former:

  1. Sidephone will now notify users when a new software update is available. After this update, there is no longer a need to manually check Settings > System > Updater.

  2. Release notes are available in-app. When an update is available, the changelog will be visible toward the bottom of the updater screen. We'll still post more detailed update info here.

  3. A beta channel is now available. More information about this will be posted soon. In the meantime, most users should stick to the Stable channel.

  4. As a result of several backend changes, users can expect more frequent and more comprehensive updates for Sidephone. This includes bug fixes and other improvements.

International Users:

  • The notification bug has been fixed.

U.S. Users:

  • No changes besides the updater update (the notification bug was already fixed for US devices in software version 1.0.3).

Additional updates and improvements will be rolling out this month (especially for the Compact Qwerty experience).

Experiencing issues after the update?

The Sidephone team is ready to help. If you are experiencing an issue that impacts your ability to use the phone, please contact [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

If you would like to suggest a feature or report a minor bug, please add it to: https://www.sidephone.com/pages/bugs-and-feature-requests

Screen keeps waking up

Hey, I was planning to use my Sidephone when I dont want to pull up my phone constantly.
A few days ago I was grabbing it instead of my main phone to go play billard. After looking at my Sidephone to text someone I noticed that it somehow accidentally unlocked (swipe to unlock) and did things on its own like nearly calling random numbers, opening all types of apps and trys to text people random texts. That sucks the energy from the battery over the time and because I was afraid that the phone keeps pocket-calling I checked it every few minutes.
Now the questions: Is there any idea why it happens and how to avoid it (without pin-locking my device)?

Also maybe interesting for Sebastian and Chris: My sleeved charging cable, wich I use for every other device because its fast, long and durable, collides with the silicone case when loading the phone. It is loading but kinda annoys me because its deforming the case.

Dumber Mini vs. Sidephone - Which One Comes Out ON TOP? || Dumber Mini & Sidephone on DumbphonesUK

Heya lovely folk,

I have made a little comparison video for both the Sidephone and the Dumber Mini. I go through and score each 'part' (camera, calls, battery etc) and then chat through what I think.

I feel like this will be useful for the lovely people on here to help with some of their decisions as I know the two phones are often compared.

Hope this helps, and any questions let me know! The sidephone is mine, but I had to send the Dumber Mini on to another reviewer so I will answer questions as best as I can!

Thanks,
Joseph

About 1 week with the sidephone

I know there are a bunch of posts about this but I thought I'd add my own thoughts as well.

  1. Hardware itself is really really nice, phone feels great, camera is serviceable, it's a really fun trick to be able to replace tiles.
  2. While the replacing tiles feature is an amazing idea, I don't really see much value at the moment in using anything other than the qwerty tile.
  3. I was able to get slack, whatsapp (in companion mode for now), telegram, egg, sensibo, moovit working with microg with little to no effort. Moovit & Egg are able to pay for transit and scan just fine.
  4. I was not able to get bit (a money transferring app) working, this I expected but still unfortunate as it's popular when buying from smaller vendors. I also don't think it's possible to get it working. I suppose an alternative could be carrying cash around.
  5. As someone who lives abroad and talks to family semi-often, not having a front camera is also kind of a bummer.

When I got it I was not able to update to the latest firmware, now that seems to be resolved.

Great device overall and I'm really excited for its future, for my use case though I don't think I can see myself in the near future using it as a primary device. It's a tiny bit too much friction to do everything I need but a lot of that is my lifestyle choices which I can try to change.

One fear I (maybe) irrationally have is being somewhere with only the sidephone and not being able to do something, I will try to leave the house with only the sidephone here and there.

I keep reading that the rubber (qwerty) keyboard isn’t working properly, and i’m wondering whether a plastic keyboard like the ones on BlackBerrys might be an option!?

WhatsApp Verifiy Issue

Post image

WhatsApp is not working anymore after I tried to connect two phones (duo sim/ same account) with each other and my WhatsApp account got checked by WhatsApp after I tried to sync. When I try to log in now it says I need to install WhatsApp from the original official source, which I did, still not working, it also gives me a quick message that my number is not verified.

tutamail

hey I'm in the process of degoogling and I'm trying to find a gmail alternative, with my preferred set up being tutamail + ente 50GB, and the other option being proton mail+ and ente 50GB. I don't plan for ente to be on the sidephone, i feel it might bloat it up and anything i really need sent back and forth i can do via WhatsApp or Signal; but the calendar and email i really do need and syncing should work fine (so i can actually plan my week out on laptop and look at it on the phone).
so i was wondering if anybody here has been using tutamail and calendar on the sidephone and how that's going ?

QWERTY keyboard nearly unusable

Qwerty keyboard is incredibly buggy, constantly spamming random keys midway through messages, and randomly brings up apps, usually the settings screen for jake type or the call app. It's actually called two people while I was typing a message. Is there going to be any fixes, cause it seems to be getting worse with time.

Does anyone know if the t9 keyboard works any better? I've just been calling people to avoid using the keyboard
