Hey everyone,
I’m currently a 1st-year Computer Science undergrad in India, but I am finding my current curriculum incredibly unfulfilling and way too easy. It has always been my dream to study abroad and push myself in a more rigorous academic environment.
I recently received a confirmed offer from QUB for BSc Mathematics and Computer Science, along with the International Office Undergraduate Scholarship. Academically, I am thrilled. But financially, I am terrified.
Here is my reality: my family’s absolute maximum budget for my entire degree is around ₹30 Lakhs (roughly £28,000). Even with the scholarship and Belfast having a lower cost of living compared to London, the international tuition fees plus living expenses over three years will completely blow past my family's savings.
To make this happen, I will have to take on a massive educational loan to cover the gap. I really need some grounded, unfiltered advice from current students or recent alumni:
- The Job Market: What is the reality of the post-study work opportunities in Belfast (or the wider UK) right now for tech/math/CS grads? Are companies actually sponsoring international students, or is it a bloodbath?
- The ROI: For those who graduated recently, what are realistic starting salaries looking like? If I take on a huge loan, how many years of aggressive saving will it actually take to clear it?
- The Big Question: Should I take this massive financial bet on myself? Is the QUB Maths & CS degree respected enough in the industry to justify going into heavy debt, or is the risk-to-reward ratio for international students just too bad right now?
Any brutal honesty, shared experiences, or insights into the Belfast tech scene would be massively appreciated. I need to make a decision soon and I don't want to ruin my 20s with unmanageable debt.
Thanks in advance.
