PL Vs PW I have a lot of questions about the ending to Layton vs Wright Spoiler

I finished the game last night and have been stewing on it ever since. Very much enjoyed the game. It was fun, but the more I think about the ending, the less sense it starts to make and I want to know if my questions have actual answers.

What were the "witches" they saw in London? Magic could only exist in Labyrinthia because there was something in the drinking water, but they were in London and had never been to Labyrinthia before.

How did Accidenti's car end up in a tree with a giant handprint on the hood? See previous.

Why was Espella in a catatonic state during the first trial? I thought that state was specifically brought on by her repressed trauma from the fire

Why did Darklaw want Espella to be found guilty in the first trial? It couldn't have been to get Espella out of Labyrinthia because she was just chasing her down to keep her inside Labyrinthia. Is it to force her father to actually participate in society instead of doing this goofy social experiment.

Was Layton subject to brainwashing or not? Presumably, he was because he was ignoring the machinery that was painted black just like everyone else, but, if that's the case, who did it and why?

Why did Darklaw need to do this at all? She was presumably the only one in town other than Arthur and maybe her father to not be brainwashed, considering she had a disguise and a cover story completely ready for when she was in London, so why did she not just go to the news and go "hey what the fuck is this about"? If she doesn't believe that would do anything then what was Layton going to do?

Why did the shades need to brew the magic brainwashing ink by hand anyways couldn't they just use machinery? Presumably, it's already the shades' job to service literally all of the machinery in town because who else is going to do it and they need to go through some heavy brainwashing when they become a shade and then again when they get reintroduced to Labyrinthia. Is this literally just to keep the illusion going if a Labyrinthian citizen somehow finds themselves in the Eldwitch Woods

How do the shades fake being able to make a portal? They explain the invisibility spell as the townspeople being brainwashed to ignore the color black, the explosion spell as literally just an explosive device, and the transmutation spell as them swapping out the thing for a gold statue, but how do you destroy a wall and then refinish the same wall without leaving a noticeable difference in time?

Does the existence of the gold transmutation spell mean they have solid gold statues on hand for literally anything at anytime?

Does nobody notice that everybody in the area passes out when a spell is cast? Surely they have to realize this.

What are the shades drinking if they're not drinking the water that makes them pass out when they hear silver being hit? If they had technology, I would say they're drinking filtered water rather than the well water everyone else is, but they don't so I'm not.

Question Akira Tago books outside of Japan

Hello there, I've heard that the puzzle maker of the Layton games has also published books, does anyone know if those can be purchased somewhere in English (or anything other than Japanese) language?

Looking for a picture

Hello,

I'm looking to get a PL tattoo and would love to get the skyline on the chapter 4 title page of Pandora's Box (please see image below).

I was wondering if anyone had a better quality image? The one I have is not as crisp as I'd like.

TIA 😊

Cosplay I am cosplaying as Layton this week, what haircut should I ask my barber to do?

As the adult Layton, not the young version with the afro.

Any help with haircut names or picture references would be great, thank you!

Discussion Do you think we could get switch/PS5/PC ports of the older games?

With the upcoming game coming to playstation and PC do you think we could get ports of the previous games for those platforms and switch? Would be a great way of bringing newcomers to the series

Discussion Any news about the release of the new game?

We are now in July and yet we know only that it will be released this year. There is some Level-5 panel in schedule in the following months or they are just going to drop the release in a random day?

How did you discover Layton?

I started playing PL when I got the game for Christmas as a kid when it came out, and I’m really interested to see that the fandom continues to grow among younger audiences. If you’re a new/recent Layton fan, how did you discover the franchise?

I just updated my Layton collectibles shelf with the new gacha figures :0 I still think little disguise flora is my favorite though. The key chain is fanart from a convention

I drew this in light of the Miku trend of the World Cup, and England winning over Norway, but now it aged badly since they just lost to Argentina today :(

You did well, England!

Professor Layton poll: DLC for Nwos

I was thinking about the possibility of Nwos getting DLC like the other recent releases that Level-5 has put out. If DLC does happen for Nwos would you be interested in it and if so what would you like to see be included in that hypothetical DLC?

Edit: This is a thought experiment that is just for fun guys. Like for example one thing that can happen is the return of London Life in some form. It could be that this hypothetical mode could be a free dlc like it was for Fantasy Life I. It could literally be anything that you as a fan would like to see. Right now the release date isn't important to this poll/discussion.

150 Yes, dlc would be awesome!
387 No, Nwos doesn't need dlc.

65 is the maximum solution to the hamster minigame

I recently completed Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box and completed the hamster minigame. After seeing that the current best solution is 65, I got intrigued: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProfessorLayton/comments/1r4kyim/after_3_years_ive_found_it_the_hamster_puzzle/ . Me and a friend thought it would be rather feasible to make a solver for the minigame and try to find a better solution. We suspected that a better solution should exist giving that there are still so many degrees of freedom left to exploit. But apparently not. We efficiently brute forced every solution to 66 steps and 67 steps but came up empty handed.

Me and my friend both independently made a solver and got the same solution with slightly different approaches:

Both solvers can be used to find other solutions if you want. Like we found quite a lot of solutions to 65 steps like this one for example:

It also runs rather fast compared to what was mentioned in the last post. It can find solutions to 65 in under a minute. Brute forcing the 66 and 67 steps still took multiple minutes to over 1 hour but it was good enough for this case

Question Does the "this reminds me of a puzzle!" trope bother anyone else?

I just started this series and while I liked Curious Village well enough, the vast majority of the puzzles being completely random and isolated from what's going on really bothered me, and it felt like a cool story was being interrupted by the puzzles instead of enhanced by them (yes I'm aware of the ending, but it doesn't help the feeling while you play the game).

Then I played Diabolical Box and was thrilled that the puzzles by in large were related to what's going on, and the fact the ending puzzles tied into the themes and messaging of the overall story was absolutely peak.

Now I'm playing Unwound Future and I feel like we're back to just a barrage of random puzzles rather than them dealing with what's going on. I feel like it'd be easy enough to integrate them, making the puzzles around solving a problem for an NPC instead of them just challenging you to solve a random puzzle with nothing to do with anything. Layton just asking Luke if he's heard of X puzzle after interacting with something also bothers me, and I feel the games just trying to make excuses to pad the game with puzzles to have more than the last game.

Am I the only one that feels this way? Or do most Layton fans enjoy just doing puzzles themselves and don't care how integrated they are to what's going on?

Went out with friends to check out the Bandai Cross store in Camden and nearly screamed aloud when I saw they had the Professor Layton ones (wouldn't have been very gentlemanly of me to do so)! I was aiming for Flora but still super happy to have gotten the professor and his no.1 apprentice though 😆.

If you go, hope all your tries go better than mine did!

Question Do you think NWOS will have some kind of collector's edition?

Growing up with the Layton series I always dreamt of some sort of collector's edition, but Nintendo games rarely had these kind of editions.

Now that the game is coming out for more platforms (and Nintendo Switch also has some CEs) I really hope we get one for Layton also, even if it's not directly from Level-5 (for example iam8bit, that does amazing official stuff).

Fanart I made a Hint Coin 'action figure'!

Post image
871 Upvotes

Hello all!

I have always been a collector and fan of bootleg and fan-made action figures. I recently 3D printed some hint coins and messed around with some different wash effect paints to give it a little 'wear'.

I whipped up this quick card back in GIMP and had a local print shop print one up for me. I used a photo upscale for the outer border image I found from Curious Village. It ended up warping some of the windows a little weird, so if I make another I plan to fix and clean that up. Sprayed some 3M Super 77 adhesive and glued it to a comic book backer for some thickness.

Just wanted to make one of these for fun and add it to my wall of random action figures. I am in the process of making some silly (non Professor Layton) mash-up Meccha Chameleon ones next.
