Hi all, looking for some advice for my pigeon. I have been considering finding him a companion as my schedule of late has made it difficult to spend as much time with him as I'd like, and I would hate for him to get lonely. My concern, though, is that he has a poorly healed injury in one of his legs that causes him to have a permanent limp (he is a rescue and already had this injury when I found him, so not sure how it occurred). He flies beautifully and is otherwise happy and healthy, but this leg issue makes me worry that he could be bullied by a companion. My assumption would be that it would hinge more on the temperament of the companion bird, but would love input and advice from any experienced pigeon keepers!

Hi all! I rescued this pigeon about a week ago.

I’m an animal rehabbed but have never actually had to do it for a pigeon.

He/she had a broken wing and was treated and has (under the recommendation of a vet) been staying with us while healing.

But I have to admit, my knowledge on them is very limited and a lot of online information is super conflicting, so I wanted to learn from other pigeon keepers instead.

Firstly what kind of pigeon is he/she?

Is there a way to tell if it’s a he or she?

What’s the best diet to feed them or your recommended brands for food and treats?

We have him in a repurposed rabbit cage (4x2x2) since the vet didn’t want him flying and hurting itself more. But we make sure that he gets plenty of outside the cage time and hangs out with us.

They seem to like it when I scratch their neck and face? I keep other birds and don’t know if the “no petting on stomach or back” rule applies to these guys.

This is a totally wild bird as far as I’m aware. I saw a woman chasing him with a jacket. I walked over and asked if she needed help since I rehab animals, she said yes, I kinda just walked over a scooped him up and he sorta just let me.

Vet told me to get a wild bird mix and a shallow water dish for him. But now that he’s getting more and more active by the day I want to get him more things to keep him happy and entertained!

So any help or advice would be great! 🩷

I'm a beginner with having pet pigeons and I am very happy that I got these 2 beautiful brief doves, but yesterday I let the cage be open in my room so that if they want to inspect the rest of the room they can, so they did and that's amazing but I'm just a little worried because they have sat at the same place for almost 10 hours, and they haven't flown back to their cage or anything to eat or drink something, and I need to be at work at 12 so in 5 hours, how do I get my fresh pigeons back in the cage without creeping them out🥹🙏

I adopted my girl when she was deemed unreleasable by the vet techs at a wildlife rehab I volunteered at. She's incredibly sweet + has captured the hearts of everyone she has met (hard not to love that face).

However, I do worry about leaving her alone so often (work + classes). I want to find her a good match + would prefer to go through a "speed date" of sorts but the closest pigeon rescue I know of is 6 hours away in Chicago.

Sooooo, my question is. Does anyone know of a rescue in Minnesota that handles pigeons or, if you think the trip to Chicago is worth it, does Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue allow potential adopters to bring their pigeons + make sure the pairing is a good match?

Hi all. We've adopted a rescue pigeon and are getting her crate upgraded one piece at a time. Our avian vet said to attach Astro Turf to perches to prevent bumblefoot. Our girl only has one good foot so it's vital she keeps it healthy!

I heard the brand Astro Turf is safe and is used for falconry, but I am wondering what is your experience with this or with other artificial grasses? I want to make sure we get one that isn't prone to falling apart so she doesn't pull any loose bits of plastic off and eat them.

If you don't use artificial grass, what do you use to prevent bumblefoot?

Some more info that might be helpful: Our set up is indoor, an XL dog crate, We let her out for a few hours a day in a pigeon proofed room and want to upgrade the room too with some perches, rocks and wide branches. I'd like a mix of surfaces for her to perch on so she has a choice, but ideally all would be proofed against bumblefoot.

I'm so proud of this (big) little lady. First photo is her on the fegg I swapped her real one out for. The second is the egg, which is significantly larger than my feggs and the eggs my feral hen produces.

I am curious if someone knows the likelihood of this clutch being fertilized by my male, Tupelo. I brought her home from the shelter last Sunday, 7/12. By the end of 7/13, they accepted each other's love, and I think the first time I saw them mating was the following day, give or take. She laid the first egg late 7/19 and has yet to lay the second.

Obviously, I'm not letting them find out if he fertilized it. She might have been cooking it already since the shelter told me the previous owner had seen her lay, but if anyone knows how soon eggs can develop after mating (or how that works generally) it would be cool to learn.

Hi everyone! I adopted a pigeon about a week ago. The past couple of days I feel like he has been coming out of his shell. He has eaten out of my hand a few times, he doesn’t grunt anymore when I put my hand in his cage to change his food/water. He even woke me up with coos this morning which was really really cute.
Now my question, he obviously isn’t comfortable with my hands yet. When he comes out he will pick a spot a couple of feet from me, and preen himself or take a nap. But he hasn’t come up to me yet which is okay!
I am trying to get him used to the pigeon pants as I sadly can’t really have him out freely without them. Yesterday he wore them for a little and then I took them off and he stayed out all day without them, but thats not something I can do everyday.
I am concerned about the grabbing to put on/take off the pants. I don’t want that to ruin whatever trust he has in me… I try to make it as quick as I can.
I just put them on him a little while ago, and we are downstairs and he is honestly coming closer to me than he did yesterday? So I feel like that’s probably a good sign?

hi! i own two pigeons that came to me together, and im looking to introduce a third. I have done some research into this process but got differing info, and a lot of it seems to be specific to indoor pigeons.

My birds live in an outdoor aviary, they have lots of room to hop, jump, walk, fly and perch. When it comes to keeping the birds separate, i am unsure of how to approach this as i do not have any other place for the new pigeon to go, and leaving it in a crate whilst the others get to roam feels like the wrong way to go about it ? (this being said it is possible for me to build an extension on the side of the aviary, it would just be a matter of figuring out measurements as the aviary is quite specific to our garden boundaries and the space we have lol)

I suppose i was just wondering if anyone had advice on how they approached introducing their birds (especially outdoor). My current pair are used to each other but have not quite bonded despite the boys best efforts lol. My new pigeon is coming from a breeder and won’t be here for a few weeks yet as he continues to grow, all birds appear well cared for but i am obviously hesitant to risk introducing any illness or getting something wrong. thank you in advance :,,)

I’m currently looking for a pigeon, just as a companion. A few months ago I rescued a leucistic pigeon from a cat. He recovered pretty fast the first few days, but while I was searching for a vet to check him out, he had a seizure and passed away in my hands. I’m assuming the bacteria spread too fast before I could reach professional help. But he did go from being secluded to rousing, preening, and tucking his foot beside me. I’ve always wanted a bird, and having him made me want another pigeon to love and care for. The only problem is, there are no breeders nearby from what I can tell online, although I am considering glpr and saving up for a pigeon from them. I am located in Gulfport, MS. If anyone has any pigeons or knows anyone be sure to let me know! Or if you know any reputable breeders who can ship to me. Thank you!

My daughter was given a young pigeon, roughly 6-7 weeks old. She really wanted a pet pigeon and wants it to bond to her eventually.
We’ve had it for 2 days and it hasn’t been eating or drinking. It will peck at seeds but won’t swallow them.
We were getting worried so we tried the softened peas/seed force-feeding method and she was able to swallow down about 10-15.
But we’re afraid that she will HATE us or our hands forever after that.
We also have been trying the pecking school videos on YouTube & she gets excited, will peck the seeds on the screen but not the real ones around her feet.
Tomorrow we’re going to try more softened seeds/peas and a different variety of smaller seeds from a wild bird feed mix I have.

I’d love any advice or words of encouragement please.
Really hoping she won’t hate us for force feeding her 😭 we were as gentle as we could be.

I’m an EXTREMELY anxious person.

The past 3 or so days I’ve had a tight chest/lower throat (like some food got stuck but permanent) it’s worse when laying down. It’s not painful but very annoying and means it feels i can’t fully breath in.

I also have chronic stress, an eating disorder and because of that i picked up smoking and vaping (not hugely often though) so really my lungs are already in bad shape and I’m so scared i have BFL. My pigeons are my reason for waking up and are what got me out the worst of my depression and are the reason I’m alive. I went down a Google rabbit hole and google (and it’s AI overview) are convince j have BFL so IM now convinced i do, and it’s hard to seperate any symptoms because they can all be excused from the multitude of other things wrong with me.

I’m genuinly so terrified. I’ve had one bird since late April/early may, and got the second yesterday. They live in the conservatory and doors are often open because it’s summer, and I’m up in the attic but they have no air purifier (just bought one and higher quality masks for cleaning.) i clean once a week in really bad weeks, to once a day on my good weeks (they’re always fed and watered ans given time to fly about. Even when I’m severely mentally sick i make sure they have what they need) and for the first month to two months i would dry scrape droppings, now i wet them with a vinegar/water solution first.

So paranoid and decided Reddit is better than Google ai.

Anyway j can live with my babies even with BFL? I leave for uni next year, woukd they give my lungs enough time to recover that j could go back to looking after them with extra precautions and no worry? Kinda like if you quit smoking long enough your lungs recover and you can almost start from scratch?

Honestly this may be the kick up the ass i need to finally quit smoking, so silver lining. (I already get stress and nictonine induced seizures but i guess that wasn’t enough 🫩🫩🫩)

Also jsut to mention i did go to an MCR concert shortly before i started feeling sick. Is there like a flue or cold or smt that aligns with just tight throat/chest?? Ahhh
