I’m half Pashtun and my Pashtun dad was a very explosive athlete without doing any weight training and I am also, I was wondering if anyone else has noticed they also share this characteristic or if me and my dad just won the genetic lottery

I wanted to vent it out somewhere but I fall short of words every time I want to talk about it. But before that I wanted to clarify that it's not about targeting any specific ethnic group, I am not blaming anyone either. I have a lot of friends from all over the country and a lot of them are Punjabis.

I'm a pacifist and a follower of Bacha Khan ideology.

It's just what I've experienced and observed myself and my other fellows.

Pashtun and Baloch are different from other residents of Pakistan. We are culturally, ethnically and linguistically very different from the other residents of the country.

But what concerns me is that I think we're morally different too. Pashtunwali is our code (of Pashtun). But I expect basic decency from all our countrymen. But I've experienced and observed that not everybody has the idea of it and I'm not blaming them either. It's how they are taught socially.

In our Pashtun culture, if there's a wedding in the area and someone dies in their neighborhood (far or near), though, we don't postpone our weddings but we don't play music, we don't dance and do not celebrate it either. It's just a simple nikkah, with a gathering. (That's just an example of one thing how it's done in our culture, there are thousands of other examples of how we do other stuff)

I'm sure y'all are aware of what's happening in Balochistan right? And I'm sure y'all have seen that vid of Punjabis dancing on loud music, while a few kilometers away there are dead bodies, their loved ones sitting behind the coffins, protesting for their basic rights.

And it concerns me that nobody (except us Pashtun and Baloch) find that weird? and concerning?! I saw a video of a fellow Pashtun criticizing the people dancing and enjoying and the comments were full of people criticizing the creator that "ab khushi manana bhi mana hai?" , "kyun tum ne khana peena chor dia, ya sans Lena chor di?"

these are the exact comments on that post. while some are saying "uska kia jo Punjab k log martay hain Balochistan mein, why are you not talking about it? Punjabi bhi to mar rahy hein itny."

I want to ask, is this a competition, an Olympic sport? Koi muqabla ho raha hai?

Ones I’ve noticed are:

(Pardon the cringy spelling or me trying to use “/“ marks to accommodate different pronunciations)

Bas/Basta is nigh similar to “Basta” in Italian which both mean “Stop”/“Enough”

Another one I’ve noticed when I was making an original character for x-men is that the word for “Emerald” which is “Zamarud”/“Zamarut” is also eerily similar to its Russian counterpart “Izmurut”. I’ve noticed that gemstone names seem to all almost just be remixed versions for what other cultures call them and that sometimes they’ll just describe the gem instead of assigning it a proper name.

My favorite one isn’t one hundred percent confirmed because of Iskandar-the-okayish’s fanboys but Kandahars name might have ties to the word “Candy” because of sugarcane and it’s technically called “Candy city”

This one isn’t really a cognate or a loanword but I noticed that instead of saying “ammonia” some of us might just say “Lavender” in a Pashto accent.

Also I’m using “loanword” in the sense that Pashto either influenced these words or vice versa. Personally I don’t know the etymology of the words but if anyone does I’d appreciate it.

i have not a drop of pashto blood in me (im nepalese) but ya'll are so tuff and with such beautiful culture 🥹 ESPECIALLY the traditional dresses, oh my lord they are stunning.

I've been thinking about something for a while, and I'm genuinely curious to hear other people's thoughts.

Why do we mix Pashto with other languages so much?

For example, among many Pashtuns in Pakistan, Urdu words are used constantly in everyday Pashto, and many people even count using Urdu numbers instead of Pashto ones. In some Pashtun-majority areas, Pashto isn't even taught in schools, which probably contributes to this.

In Afghanistan, it's a bit different. Pashto contains many Persian and Arabic loanwords, and even the names of the days of the week are commonly used in Persian rather than native Pashto.

I'm not saying that borrowing words is wrong. Every language borrows vocabulary from others, and that's completely normal. But sometimes it feels like we're gradually replacing parts of our own language instead of preserving them.

This post is not about nationalism, ethnic superiority, or disrespecting any other language. I respect Persian, Urdu, Arabic, and every other language. My concern is simply that we shouldn't let our own language slowly disappear or lose its richness because we stop using its native words.

Do you think Pashto speakers should make more of an effort to preserve native Pashto vocabulary? Or is language mixing just a natural and unavoidable part of how languages evolve?

Salam everyone, it’s pretty clear what this post is about lmao, but I live in the west, and every day I feel like I’m loosing Pashto, I mean my mum and dad speak it at home, some of my relatives say it on the phone but my fluency is just so off I feel ashamed responding in perfect English instead, doesn’t help as most of our family friends speak Urdu or Dari which are beautiful languages and languages I understand but I really wish I was 100% fluent in pashto, it sucks cuz my mum said as soon as I started prep here I started speaking English at home, anyone else been through this :(

I’ve seen people calling us Gul Khans and saying we’ve mixed with other populations, so my question is: are Yousafzais looked down upon among Pashtuns now?
