PSA: Dealers and Ordering APXs

I have seen this pop up on here a few times and it’s time to bring up some facts to debunk the myths.

1) The ONLY way to order an APX radio is via a Motorola Account Rep or Manufacturer Rep (MR)… that’s all! Those two points will set up an account for you, and your radios will be purchased under your account. Any other dealer claiming to do so is buying a radio at contract price under another account, marking it up, and reselling it to you. That’s both in violation of that contract and their dealer agreement.

2) Warranty for said products are NOT transferable. That means if/when you do buy against the first piece of advice above, you will not have a full warranty for the 1/3/5/7/etc years you thought you paid for. The warranty is only transferable in a few situations, and only when the purchaser agrees to it as well (good luck when the radio was purchased on a contract without the “owner” knowledge).

3) Upgrades cost money! I’ve seen too many “dealers” claiming to sell a radio and “just let me know what you need in it”. Again, they’re violating several agreements along with actively defrauding Motorola. A loaded APX8000 will not be $5000 under any situation any time soon - so you’re being had.

Take this advice as you will, but there’s a few too many posts/comments on here shilling for dealers that are guilty of doing at least one of the above.

XTS5000 says "FAIL 01/82"

So my XTS5000 has been working fine since I got it 2 weeks ago and it was working fine today but out of nowhere when I turned it on it just said "FAIL 01/82". I can read and write to the radio but no matter what I try it doesn't work. I even tried writing the codeplug when i first bought it before I changed anything and when writing that it still says "FAIL 01/82"? How can I fix this?

mtr3000 repeater firmware

I have a mtr3000 repeater that is currently set for capacity max and cps2.0 or 16 can't read it. I've tried to recover using cps with firmware r2.09 and r2.10 (the only ones I can get off the motorola website) and neither will work when i do the recover it pops up the screen to select the firmware and code plug but just says none in the drop down boxes. I guess this is because the repeater if on an older firmware?

Can anyone help me with finding an older firmware or tell me how I can get this thing out of capacity max so I can read it with regular cps. I tried mototurbo rm config but I think the radio is set up for a different network than mine and I can't connect to it.

Thanks for any help or tips.

N30- P25- SmartConnect auto swap

I’ve programmed a bit of traditional P25 systems but haven’t dealt with SmartConnect/ WiFi that much. We are using N30s on a P25 trunking system. Trying to figure out the best way to automatically swap between the WiFi and P25 coverage. We don’t have enough coverage within a certain structure that users operate in. We know where the coverage issues are but we are having issues with the P25 extenders cutting out the WiFi bandwidth, or some version of that (the 3rd party installers won’t explain it any more or any more diligently). Right now we can manually swap between the systems, P25 or WiFi, or we can let it automatically revert yet this leads to tons of OOR/ bonk tones and it spends so much time swapping between the two due to a poor threshold that it misses transmissions. Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone gone through a similar setup?

So I’m going to be getting a XTL5k with an 05 Head. The head isn’t attached to the radio, so I’m looking to mount it on my desk in the area circled. Does anyone know of a good way to go about that?

Ignore the mess, I’m redoing my desk, wiring, and configuration entirely.

XPR7550e battery stuck at 0%

I recently bought a used Motorola XPR7550e with a genuine battery. The seller included the wrong charger, so I bought a cheap aftermarket charger advertised as compatible with the XPR7550e/WPLN4232.

The charger appears to charge the battery, but the radio’s Battery Info menu shows:

Remaining Battery: 0%

Service Life: 100%

The battery is approximately four years old. Despite showing 0%, I left the radio powered on and unplugged for more than two hours, and it continued running normally, so the battery clearly is not actually empty.

Would putting it through a full calibration/reconditioning cycle in a genuine Motorola IMPRES charger likely correct the percentage reading? Or could this be an issue with the radio itself?

Again, I’m new to all of this, so any advice on what I should check first would be appreciated.

Astro MPL Behavior

This is a non FPP radio (XTS2500 Limited Keypad). I'm trying to program a zone with simplex frequencies that will use CSQ and a selectable tone on TX. I know this is really an edge case but I want to be able to communicate with folks who have a PL on recieve. From what I can tell, enabling MPL does nothing on TX if I have CSQ in an MPL entry. Am I missing something?

I discovered this when I tried to go direct on another zone with MPL using a repeater channel and the other user couldn't hear me. Understandable because mirroring my RX tone when it is CSQ would mean no tone sent out on direct. But I assumed a simplex channel would at least be able to have a selectable transmit tone as long as the MPL entry had one.

All of my MPL entries are CSQ/Tone and I want to avoid either programming dozens of channels or not being able to use MPL for repeaters that have split tones. I very specifically want CSQ. This almoat certainly also applies to my XTL but I haven't programmed it to test yet.

APX6500

Alright, I am nearly certain I can answer my own question. But here we go.

I have an APX6500, if I update the Flashcode from P25 phase 1 to P25 Phase 2 do I need to write a new code plug to be able to use Phase 2?

Need help upgrading the firmware

Hello everyone.

I have a XPR 3500e and the current Firmware version on it is R02.22.03.1001. I have been getting the error "[670] Application has encountered an error. Failed to access a file in the device", when trying to upgrade the firmware. My computer is running Windows 11 Home Edition.

I'm able to program channels on the radio with no issue.

I am using this programing cable. https://bluemax49ers.com/product-explorer/motorola-xpr3500e-usb-programming-cable-pmkn4115b/

I have tried to upgrade to the following Firmware's

R02.25.03.1001

R02.23.02.1002

R02.23.01.1003

R02.22.03.1001 get this error since its the same firmware version that is installed "[1001796] No update necessary. Device has the current firmware and codeplug versions"

Ive ordered an OEM programing cable as a last ditch effort but it hasn't arrived yet.

I really need the logic board layout, boardview, and the schematics if possible

Old XTS-3000 programming

I purchased an Ebay radio. It came programmed with a UHF T-Band trunking system from NJ. I looked up the frequencies and the system is long gone. Everyone is on the statewide 700-800 mhz system now. This was a surprise, I usually get them scrubbed.

The CPS will not let me delete the trunking system without system keys.

Is there a reliable workaround to use the radio? I need two UHF analog channels. I tried changing all of the trk to cnv and adding my channels on top, but the CPS will not let me upload to the radio without the advanced system key.

Should I have to send this out, what would a dealer charge to reflash the radio for me?

Motorola TETRA remote control AT codes

Hi all, I'm a ham who is getting into TETRA. I have tried but so far failed to find clear instructions on how to create, format & use the AT codes needed to remote control a TETRA radio and a list of those codes.

I wish to

1) To obtain the GPS location of a lost radio.

2) When searching, activate the alarm to help locate it

3) To be able to remotely change TGs/deactivate it

Thanks

Arbitrary IP data over P25 with XTS or APX radios?

Edit: I got it working on both my APX and XTS radios! The XTS was a little tricky to get working with PPP on windows, turning off flow control in the modem settings seems to be the trick. The interface on the APX automatically populates as a network interface which is nice, but you still have to be sure to assign a data personality to the Astro personality. Thanks for all the help!

I’m wondering if it’s possible to send arbitrary user IP data over P25 with either an XTS 5000 or an APX radio. I know the standard supports some level of IP data, and both radios have data modem settings, but that’s about as much as I can find online. I know the XTS 5000 actually has a serial terminal and I’ve poked around in it but can’t find any information about sending packets.

I know the APX radios also create a network interface when connected to a PC so it seems like it should be possible on that front as well, but I can’t find any documentation.

Is this even possible?

Need some assistance

SOLVED - THANK YOU

Hello, I am completely new to programming radios. I have a CDM1250 and programming cable, It is detected and communicates fine with the computer. I have CPS R06.12.04, it does not want to setup even with compatibility mode or run as admin or both. I know this is an old software, so please pardon my ignorance.

I am running windows 11 64-bit. Ive put a fair amount of money into upgrading and actually using this radio but am I no means a software guy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Let me be clear: I assume I am having a SOFTWARE problem not a hardware problem.

How can I learn more about Motorola radios?

Hi!

So I am a security guard and at the place I work, we use motorola radios. For some reason their existence enchants me, and I am desperate to learn more about how they work. Right now I'm trying to figure out our emergency system, since we've never actually used the panic button/emergency function.

That specific thing side, I'm just very curious to learn more about them. How they're set up and how they work and all the different things you can do with them. I'm not even sure what kind of radios they actually ARE. Only radio I ever heard of is FM, AM, and Ham lol.

I guess it doesn't have to be motorola specific, as I imagine other brands are the same kind of radio and stuff. I just know next to nothing about them and I'd love to know more about these kinds of radios other than the place where the voices in my head come from.

EDIT: For those saying im a bot, can't a girl just have a little bit of radio autism?? damn.

Apx8000H speaker

Hi all,

I bought a tagged apx8000h from a very reputable seller and wanted to know if this is normal on these units and or the apx8000 as well. At times when receiving audio from speaker it has a minor rattle in background. Doesn’t happen all the time. Is this normal ? Should it not ever ?

Thank you
