/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Visiting? Stop Here First!)

Hi all!

Welcome to r/MontereyBay

If you're visiting, moving here etc, this page should serve as a hub to answer many of the most frequent questions we see- where should I eat? What should I do? and so on.

Been meaning to get this page going for a while now after doing the original food-based one a couple years back.

On this post, I'll be linking to a number of community recommendation threads where we've gathered / curated advice for those looking for it.

These are not exhaustive lists, as there are many great places to eat, drink and visit in the area. They are just the recommendations that users made when the threads were posted. If you feel something is "missing," please realize that is why. Other websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also helpful for finding information from a broader range.

Where to Eat - (From 2022) - Thread

Where to Visit / What to See (Tourist-Oriented) - (In progress) - Thread

What to Do / See - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Day Trip Recommendations - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Have a suggestion in regards to how to make this post better / more helpful? Please leave a comment below.

/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Where to Visit / What to See - Tourist Version)

Hi all,

In an effort to build out the new sticky post, we are back to ask for your recommendations for the following category - "Where to Visit / What to See" - oriented for tourists visiting the area.

There will be more threads in the coming weeks where we will share similar recommendations for people who are living here, among other helpful ones.

For this thread though, we would like to gather your thoughts on where to visit and what to see for people visiting the area.

I'll be organizing it in the following way (since I think it will be the most helpful based on how people usually ask questions when they post here)

-Must-See/Do (Think the Aquarium, Big Sur etc. these are the things you'd recommend first if someone has never been here before)

-Highly-Recommend / Great Option (This category will serve as the most broad catch-all. Not something you'd consider a must do, but would be a great option for most visitors depending on their preferences).

-Extras (This category will be maybe more niche-oriented. Things you want to throw out there because people would enjoy it, but probably won't appeal to everyone.)

When replying if you could include the following information, that would be awesome:

Associated Cost - (if applicable)

Time Commitment - (1 hour / Half-Day / etc)

Website - (if applicable)

Family Friendly (yes/no)

I'll post an example for the Aquarium to get things started.

Thanks!

Zillow rental scam

Upvotes

Just a friendly PSA. Scammers are on Zillow posting houses for rent that aren’t really available. My gf and I almost fell for it. Red flags started popping up when communicating with the “owner”. This was in south Salinas. We knew to be skeptical of postings on Craigslist, but we thought Zillow would be more legit. Beware.

Salinas based Taylor Farms donated $1 million to TRUMP for favors exposed in investigative reporting by Brian Tyler Cohen

The premise of this video is that TF paid Trump $1million to get legislation muted that does pathogen tracking. I don't think so, thats not what TF paid a million dollars to Trump for. People getting sick from leafy greens is an inedibility, it happens.

As this reporting shows, TF gave $1million to Trump as a bribe, to curry favors. We can be sure TF wasn't giving Trump a million to suppress tracking of food born pathogens, TF wants to know and they want to know ASAP about those things. TF paid Trump one million dollars for something obvious by its absence.

So here is my thought experiment. I ask you fellow residents, where is ICE? Considering the --->REALITY of Monterey County, the absence of ICE in Monterey County is telling a story loud and clear. Our leaders of local industry are currently and have been working behind the scenes to keep their workforce protected from ICE, diligently communicating with and paying off dear leader.

Some people have miss understood what I am about to say here. Where is ICE? Where are they? Why is there no ICE presence in Monterey County? Why are they NOT here? I think they are bad and Sunday night rodeo porta potty toilet bowl scum, will all be prosecuted and no one should ever hire or date anyone who has worked for or been contracted by ICE... But ICE isn't here... WHY? Because Trump is now and has been paid off by local Ag leadership. Because it works. As this investigative reporting highlights, million dollar payments have been made from local ag, to Trump, but it's not to hide the spread of what lurks on your greens.

Let TF and BUD, Mann Packing and DOLE, Foxy, Driscoll and Pebble Beach and all the rest pay the bribes. They are doing great, keep it up, I'm not being sarcastic here. So they pay the regime a couple million in bribes, these local companies are making billions, while keeping ICE away. Let's not fool ourselves here, MoCo would be happy hunting grounds for ICE. Thus, the million dollar payments. I say, keep greasing the wheels, pay whatever the king wants from you, and let's wait it out.

This investigative reporting showcasing a 1 million dollar bribe given to Trump by local ag is just pointing out the obvious.

Murder Mystery or Sock-Hop?

I need some decision making help please…

I host fun events on a regular basis, HOWEVER, my son is going off to college to play football, and my other son is playing Varsity football this year. So… I’ve only got room to host ONE more BIG (weekend night) event for y’all before my boys’ season kicks off, and I’m trying to decide what to do.
So my question is… what sounds coolest? And what are you most likely to attend? A 50’s Grease-themed Murder Mystery, a Murder at the Masquerade, or just a 50’s Sock-hop dance (no muuurder mystery attached)?

I reaaaaally appreciate the feedback!

Much love,
Ninja G.

I’m working on a project to identify Iconic restaurants that make Monterey County special, ideally things you can’t get/find elsewhere.

Any ideas?

Day trip for my bday!

Hi everyone! I’m new to this sub but I’m just pointing hoping to get some good recommendations from people or if there’s any cool spots I should come check out for my birthday!

It’s on the 31st (turning 25!) and I’m planning a solo trip from Fresno, CA, so a couple hours away max. I plan to leave early around 6 am so I’d hopefully be in Monterey around 9/10 am!!

I was thinking breakfast on the beach, hitting up some local coffee shops, exploring other shops/thrift stores/bookstores, going back to the beach; but I’d love if anyone can recommend me some good places to grab a drink sometime around 5pm. Preferably with live music or some type of farmers market! Planning to go back around 9/10 pm so I’m looking to fill my day with some adventures lol! Any suggestions are appreciated 🖤

Orca's Hunting Dolphins a few miles off of Carmel today

Today, was more incredible than yesterday, and yesterday was spectacular. Here is some of the footage from today's hunt about 5 miles off of Carmel Beach.

The hunt started off in a pod of 1500 Common Dolphins, but they left the area in a big hurry leaving only 2 dolphins for the Orcas to target.

We have seen the CA140B's and CA50B the past two days, we never know when we might see them again.

Looking for ideas for an aquarium visit

My family of 4 is headed to the aquarium on August 5th and I was hoping to take the kids on one of the behind the scenes animal care tours, but unfortunately it seems they only do that tour once a day and it's sold out for 8/5.

Wondering what other options we might have to make our visit memorable?

Crush Cycle

Does anyone have any info on what's going on with Crush Cycle in Seaside? I was attending multiple classes a week up till June when they announced they were relocating. They were only supposed to be closed a week but it's been a month now with no new info. I've tried emailing and haven't heard anything back. They've opened the schedule a few times since closing but every time I sign up for a class it just ends up getting cancelled. My membership is still being charged so the lack of communication is concerning. I love the community this gym has built and really miss my morning bike raves.

Has anyone stayed at the Home2suites in Marina?

What was everyone’s experience at this hotel? I know its not in Monterey exactly but we don’t mind driving. Its for my husbands bday and we’re going on a weekend so everything is super expensive! This was one of the cheapest I can find but I also wanted a clean and safe hotel

We have a couple cool things going on tonight at The Otters Den in Marina. One, FREE pool after 6pm! And two, FREE Bingo! I’ve got some really cool donations form a couple local businesses, for instance free ice cream from The Hydration Hut, Free plants from my husband and I at What’d You Break? (Electronic repair shop), even a free carpet cleaning courtesy of ProDry in Marina! I also made quite a few custom planters for some of the plants so if that’s your jam you should definitely come through! There’s lots of other goodies to chose from as well.
I start at 7pm tonight and run it till about 8/8:30, depending how quick the games go. Last week we had surprise donations from Marina Spirit smoke shop and Noodle bar Marina come through mid game so we went till 9! SUCH a fun time, and its all free! You just gotta be 21 to be there, as it is a sports bar. If you’re a local business and want to add to the fun, feel free to text me at (4O8) 469-1O41.

Hope to see y’all tonight!
Cheers,
Ninja G.

Visiting from Canada

Hello! I’ll be coming to your area from August 25-September 4, visiting my bestie who lives in Seaside. Looking for some fun, possibly unusual, things to do in and around the Monterey area. Obviously my friend has done pretty much all the “touristy” things with other visitors so I’d love to find something that she may not have thought of. Any ideas for off beat touristy things, great local food, shopping (any outlet shopping?), spa etc. would be appreciated.
Looking forward to being in your beautiful area. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

If you can get on a whale watching boat today might be your day. Moss Landing boats are probably best. It’s rare we get them in July, so if you want to see a Killer Whale in the wild how they are ment to be seen, today might be a good day for it.

CSUMB transfer student looking for work

Hello, I just moved out here as a transfer student to CSUMB in Fall and I’m looking for work.

I’ve applied to several places without luck thus far. I need something flexible, naturally. I have my fair share of tutoring experience in several subjects, including math and sciences, and a tutoring certification to go along. I can also do pet sitting and grooming as a side gig or regular job, I just don’t know how to market for that as a side gig.

I also considered doing SAT / ACT tutoring on the side as well, though I’d have to put in a bit of work myself to get familiar with it again. Does anyone have any input on if that would be worth the effort, like if there is an adequate market for SAT / ACT tutors here and virtually?

I’m pretty open to anything that is part time and flexible. All suggestions / leads are welcome and appreciated, thank you!
