Suspect Meteorite Monthly Suspect Meteorite Identification Requests

You can now upload your images directly as a comment to this thread.

To help with your ID post, please provide:

  1. Multiple, sharp, in-focus images taken ideally in daylight.
  2. Add in a scale to the images (a household item of known size, e.g., a ruler, scale cube, banana, etc.)
  3. Provide any additional useful information (weight, specific gravity, magnetic susceptibility, streak test, etc.)
  4. Provide a location if possible so we can consult local geological maps if necessary, as you should likely have already done. (this can be general area for privacy)
  5. Provide your reasoning for suspecting your stone is a meteorite and not terrestrial or man-made.

Please can someone help me identify this specimen? It was collected along the Mojave desert as a surface find. The specimen jumped to my magnet stick and has what I believe to be a weathered fusion crust. It is highly attracted to a magnet. It is non-porous and dense. I have polished a window into the interior and see small bits of exposed fresh metal and what I believe are chondrules. I suspect it to be a chondrite. What are your thoughts? Here are the images.

Question Can meteorites make sounds when entering our atmosphere?

Back in Fall 2024, I was on the porch at my girlfriends apartment around 23:00. She lived in a remote area so there was no other cars in the streets and we both saw a meteorite falling from the sky. It was green and white, all fragmented but it made this sound of a crushed soda can or crushed metal. It was weird. I saw other meteorites of different colours, the more special one was yellow.

I want to acquire an unclassified meteorite, and get it classified. What do I need to know/have/do to make this a success?

My rough plan was to go to Tuscon next year, find a dealer I feel like I can trust, and try to buy an unclassified stone from them, where they have a decent idea what it's likely to be. I'm fine with accepting risk, but I'm not really looking for a blind box.

I'm thinking something in the 200-400g range, ideally something a bit more interesting than an L6 or H5 chondrite, but I'm not super picky beyond that. I want it to present well in a collection, but I'm not trying to find anything exceptional.

I just want the experience of getting a stone classified with my name on metbull, without being a total waste of someone's time. It's largely a vanity project, so it would be neat to get my name in metbull, and own the whole mass except for the testing sample. If for some reason it was significant, that would make me more likely to want to share, not less.

Realistically, how much do I need to know about the location of the find, original finder, the dealers in between us, etc.? Do I need pictures of it in the ground w/gps? Is this something I can/should do as a non-professional/non-academic? What else do I need to know/have/do? Is this even a reasonable idea?

⚡️New Study: Scientists identify the composition of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs

A new study published in Science Advances has found that the asteroid responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago was a CO carbonaceous chondrite—one of the rarest and most primitive types of meteorites.

Researchers analyzed nickel isotopes in the thin clay layer formed after the Chicxulub impact. Their findings suggest the asteroid originated in the outer Solar System, beyond Jupiter's orbit or within the outer asteroid belt.

The asteroid, estimated to have measured 10–15 kilometers (6–9 miles) in diameter, struck Earth at roughly 64,000 km/h (40,000 mph). Its relatively low sulfur content indicates that the mass extinction was driven primarily by the enormous amounts of dust blasted into the atmosphere, rather than sulfur-rich emissions.

Happy fall day to: Tirhert and other July 9 meteorites!

Classified as an unbrecciated eucrite; fell on July 9, 2014 at around 21:30 local time; weathering stage is W0 (fresh/pristine) and shock stage is low.
As per the Meteoritical Society:
History: (H. Chennaoui Aoudjehane, A. Aaronson, M. Aoudjehane, A. Bouferra, A. Bouragaa) On Wednesday, 9 July 2014 around 9:30 pm, residents of Tirhert, Foum El Hisn, Douar Imougadir and nearby villages in southern Morocco, witnessed an intense fireball moving horizontally in a NW to SE direction and lasting about 4 s, shortly followed by multiple sonic booms. The fireball was seen by people from cities and villages more than 220 km around the fall site near Tirhert. Immediately following the fireball event the mayor and the authorities of the area organized a field search with police to check for possible security problems. The first meteorites were recovered the following day close to the road between Foum El Hisn and Assa. Thousands of people moved to the site from surrounding cities and villages to search, but many soon left because of the difficulties of searching during the hot 50°C daytime temperatures. The positions of many of the pieces were recorded from eyewitness testimonials, forming a roughly 6 × 3 km strewnfield trending NW to SE. The largest recorded mass around 1300 g was collected close to Tirhert at the coordinates listed for this entry. Recovered pieces weighed from 1 to 1300 g, with an estimated total mass of 8 to 10 kg. Most pieces are covered by a very shiny, black fusion crust.
