Question about signal quality

Hi, I'm new here.

I just received two Heltec V4 kits, to flash them successfully; they communicate with each other, but the range seems quite poor. I'm in the city center and only managed to exchange messages over a maximum distance of about 50 meters—with one node connected to my phone outdoors and the other at my apartment window. Here are the values I get when running traceroutes with the devices side-by-side. Is this normal? I powered up the first one without attaching the antenna and worry I might have damaged it; unfortunately, I don't know which one it was... but the mesures seem similar. Should I replace the antenna? Can you recommend others for portable use? Thanks.

I'd like to be able to communicate with a friend who lives 500 meters away. I'm in France, so I'm using the 868 MHz band.

Thanks!!

self-promotion Heltec Meshnode T1 First Look

Bought a few of these for an upcoming festival with friends. This was the first card-sized Meshtastic node I've seen with a built-in compass, GNSS AND a screen in this format.

Quick take: Compass is ok if held flat and calibrated, display is good to read (but with a little ghosting), size and weight are really nice, GNSS seems fine but accuracy still TBD (will check properly soon), while it does not feel cheap - the production quality is not the best. The buttons are really hard to press plus the plastic coating on the buttons is coming off and on one of our 6 nodes the display is a bit tilted.(Not much but enough to trigger my inner monk) Can't say much about battery size but in the last 24h I lost 32% while connected constantly.

I paid 35$ and still think it's a great device for the price which might need some tweaks. :)

Wrote a more detailed blog post with pictures if you're interested: https://knoten.eu/heltec-meshnode-t1-first-look/

zero Nodes online

I have a Wio Tracker that I bought a couple weeks ago and was working perfectly. I'm not sure if I did something or not, but about a week ago it starting showing "0" online nodes. I know for a fact there are other nodes online nearby. I feel like I've tried everything to remedy the problem. I have wiped the firmware twice and re-installed the firmware and it makes no difference. My setting are correct. Role: Client, US/LongFast Freq 906.875 ver. 2.7.26, 11 Sats. 0 online. I used the python cli for a factory reset also. Not sure what else to do. Any help is appreciated!

Is there a way to have Meshtastic connected to ATAC and be able to message on long fast (what most people are using here in Albuquerque).

LilyGo T-Watch

Has anyone had experience of the LilyGo T-watch S3 Plus or similar?

I have been looking at getting something like this for my teenage son, as a project for us to work on together.

I have been looking to get him into LoRa communications and as he doesn’t currently own or use a watch thought this might be the best idea, rather than him having to worry about carrying (and no doubt losing) a secondary Mesh comms device.

Are these any good as a personal device and do they have sufficient power in their internal antenna? I have seen them in AliExpress for around £45, so worth a punt.

Sighting Just Unboxed the Heltec Mesh Node T1 – First Impressions!

Apparently, I have forgotten about my order of 2x Heltech Mesh Node T1 which I bought it during Pre-Order period.

I have received few days ago and checked it out after seeing multiple posts here on it.

It is very light and compact but I am not sure if it is shock proof. Will test it more during this week.

Meanwhile, setup is very fast using meshtastic app which is similar to Heltech V4 which i have 2 of it.

Thing to note, the side buttons are really hard to press until my fingers have minor bruises now. I don't really recommend it to new comers

Will be trying to post photos of it in a while..

self-promotion Meshtastic detection sensor module

Hi!

I wrote a tutorial explaining how to configure the Detection Sensor module and some practical use cases.

I struggled to find clear documentation, so I documented everything I learned.

I'd appreciate any feedback or corrections.

Hardwired, Mobile Meshtastic Node

Hello everyone! I am working on mounting a node to my toolbox in my truck. I will not have a backup battery because I live in AZ and it gets too hot to leave a LiPo in the sun. My plan is to wire it from an Aux fuse box (including a relay) with a buck converter (12v to 5v). I will weld a mount base to the box.

The plan is to use a 12-20inch antenna while daily driving. While moving slow on desert roads, I'm flirting with 2 5ft fiberglass/ pvc pipes to act as a pole to run Coax cable to effectively increase the antenna from 12 inches to 5ft or 10ft.

I'm looking for help with some of the parts. My goal is to withstand AZ heat, have GPS, and have an effective LOS/ elevation. If anyone recommendations regarding parts or if anyone has a setup they'd like to share that would be much appreciated!

Okay I built one of his solar nodes with the SEEED XIAO kits I was able to set it up long enough to enter it in as a router (trying to use this as a repeater) and it doesn’t stay on long enough to get connected. I get this message a lot on my laptop. Ive flashed last two Beta versions of firmware. Maybe im ignorant and it’s supposed to do that as a repeater?

I’m pretty sure I soldered everything correctly as well because everything is on. I’ve changed which port I plug in the antenna too and it doesn’t seem to have an effect.

His video for reference. He uses the other mesh but I’m trying to stick with Meshtastic for my needs.

build Help a newbie plan his first network

Hi all

I just got my first meshtastic device a rak wisblock and im eager to get started building a network.

However I have no experience with radios and only limited experience with electronics and programming.

My plan is to build a network spanning from my place of work (Kalundborg, Denmark) to my home (Høng, Denmark) and on towards my mom's home (Skælskør, Denmark)

I want the repeaters to be equipped with some environmental sensors (temp, humidity, air quality, ect) which seems to be easy enough, but i also would like them to have a radiation sensor (incase the worst happens) is that possible?

The main use of the network would be environmental data collection and emergency planning/communication

How many repeaters should I expect to install?

What kind of antenna would be best?

And do I go with meshtastic or something else? (Not sure this question is allowed but im not sure where else to ask)

Any tips, tricks, warnings or feedback is more then welcome!

Journalist looking for German Meshtastic Enthusiasts

Hi dear Meshtastic community,

my name is Michael Trammer, I am a german journalist researching on a new film on the geopolitical influence of satellites and other options of communication. So I stumbled upon Meshtastic as an alternative to already established global communications systems.

Now I am looking to get in touch with german Meshtastics users for a) understanding how big the usage and the community is in Germany and b) to find somebody that builds and installs meshtastics nodes, that we could potentially accompany.

Feel free to write me a dm or answer in the thread to get in touch.

Best Michael

Nice pocketable size. USB-C charging is great. Tiny screen gives you an idea of what is going on.

The little rubber USB-C cover sucks, doesn't attach to the unit in any way, just waiting to fall out and be lost forever.

The side buttons are near useless. Have to push very hard with the edge of my fingernail to activate. I guess you don't want them too easy, but the required pressure is a bit much. Hopefully they loosen up a bit over time.

The heartbeat LED flicker is annoying, too fast, needs to be slowed down a lot. I ended up disabling it.

Edit: Anyone else with one, is your GPS working? It's been a few hours and my unit still hasn't received a lock.

Edit 2: Based on what I'm seeing, I should get about 4 days out of one charge.

Looking for beginner set up

I’m looking to get into this as a hobby/ new communication form. Just something my nerdy self and my wife can play around with. I was thinking about two standalone handhelds and a solar repeater.

For the handhelds, I was looking at either a Wio tracker L1 pro or Muzi Super base. I haven’t found any yet that have a number pad for texting and the T-Deck full keyboard looks like a pain to use for someone with fat fingers lol. Any other recommendations?

For a repeater, I’m looking for something as high powered as I can (legally) get for the roof of my garage. I live in a bit of a valley so I figured more power=better but maybe I’m wrong on that case. Using the Mestastic map, there’s a node about 2.5 miles away that I’d like to be able to hit if I could from this. Living in a more rural area I figured the more repeaters around, there’s better. Again recommendations for this are appreciated as well!

Seeed was so great to provide yet another sample device.

Features:

  1. USB-C charging and programming
  2. Dual-Band GNSS with barotmetrich pressure sensors
  3. newest generation LoRa Chip
  4. silent alarm via buzzer
  5. bigger battery, but same runtime as T1000-E (if you use all features)
  6. IP66, not dunkable, but sturdy enough for outdoor activities.

Comes with the strap and a charging cable.

Ask away :)

Discovery | Scanning Mode

Following the docs at https://meshtastic.org/docs/software/android/user/discovery/

I've looked everywhere in the android meshtastic app and I cannot find a "Local Mesh Scanner" option anywhere in the settings.

Running v2.7.14. Anyone know how I can do the scan mode? I'm using a WIO Tracker as the Client.
