As an employee of McDonald's for several years, I thought I would make a lengthy post that you can read if you have just been recently hired at McDonald's and want to know what to expect as well as any advice you may need. Feel free to ask any questions that are not covered in this post.
Your first day: Make sure you are at least 15 minutes early on your first day. They will definitely be paying attention if you are late. You should be assigned a crew trainer, or someone that will be training you. Make sure you ask any questions you may have. Do not hesitate to ask questions, or ask to be shown something again if you didn't get it the first time. It's okay if you aren't picking things up right away. It's only your first day. The managers may get annoyed with you if you haven't picked things up in a week or two, but you won't lose the job. They will usually just give you a different position. Like for example if you aren't picking up running for front, they will have someone teach you how to hand out in drive thru or take orders in drive thru instead. You will eventually find a position that works for you.
Your hours and schedule: Don't expect to get full hours right away. If you applied to be full time, you may only get part time hours for the first week or two while you're being trained. Your hours will pick up eventually. It's extremely important that you are clear with the manager that makes the schedules what your availability and desired hours are. I recommend writing it down on paper for them. They will do the best they can to accommodate your schedule but you can't expect them to remember your availability off the top of their head when they have 30+ other employees to keep track of. They are generally very good at giving you the hours you want and remembering what days or times you can't work, but they do forget sometimes.
The work environment: McDonald's is an extremely fast paced environment. There is always something to do, or something that needs to be done. You may be expected to multitask or do multiple jobs at once. This normally isn't expected of you right away. When you're still being trained, you will only learn one area at a time. But the longer you are there and the more experience you get, the more you will be trained at multiple areas and be expected to do more than one thing. Expect rushes. There will be periods of the day where we normally get very busy. This is usually the morning breakfast rush when people are on their way to work between 7-9 AM, the lunch rush between 11AM-1 pm, the after school rush between 2:30PM-4:30PM and the dinner after work rush between 5PM-7PM. There are also days of the week where we normally are very busy. This is usually Fridays-Sundays. Mondays and Tuesdays are generally our slowest days and Wednesdays and Thursdays are in between. Obviously this will differ everywhere but that's the usual at my store. Managers often times get very stressed and it may seem like you are being yelled at or criticized. Don't take it personal. The problem with being a manager is they are literally responsible for everything during their shift. If anything goes wrong, they will be the ones that are blamed by corporate. Seems unfair, but that's how it is. If things go bad enough, they could even be written up. So they may seem strict at times because they will get in trouble if things aren't running as smoothly as they should be. Expect a stressful work environment. I will not sugarcoat it for you. McDonald's is a VERY stressful job. That doesn't mean you can't handle it though. The longer you work there, the easier it gets to navigate the stress and it becomes second nature. That being said, it's not worth sacrificing your mental health either. If the job truly is too much for you to mentally handle, do consider looking elsewhere. It's not supposed to be a toxic environment, but often times it can be. When everyone is under a lot of stress, it can sometimes create a really bad environment. Not every day will be like that though. It also largely depends on management. I won't lie to you, a lot of McDonald's has very bad management. That is what will make or break the store. So your work environment and stress level will depend on how good or bad management is at your store.
Discipline: There are three forms of disciplinary actions. Written warning, or a write up. You will be asked to read and sign a piece of paper that says in writing exactly what your offense was. You are allowed to disagree with a write up and explain your side of the story, but that dosent necessarily mean the write up is void. A write up is usually pretty non serious unless you're wracking up a bunch of them in a short period of time. It's basically just a written warning that this is what you did wrong and your signature on it verifies that you were told what you did wrong and that you were talked to about it. Just don't repeat your mistake and you should be just fine. There's usually no form of punishment beyond that. Those are usually the main form of disclipline. The second form of discipline is suspension. You will be asked to not come to your scheduled shifts for a specific length of time and you will not be paid for the time you are out. Another way this could be done is cutting your hours. This wouldn't be a full suspension where you are completely taken off the schedule for a length of time, but you will be scheduled less days or less hours, usually only temporarily. This is definitely more serious but usually isn't done as a first resort. Suspension is usually done if you have gotten several write ups and are continuing to make the same issues over and over again despite written warnings. It is possible for suspension to be their first form of disciplinary action against you but that's usually if it's quite serious such as drug use/alcohol use on the job, harassment of management or other employees, or stealing. The last form of disciplinary action is termination, or losing the job, aka getting fired. This usually only happens for severe things. In the several years I've been working at McDonald's, only two people have been actually fired. This usually follows a suspension if you keep repeating the same issue. The best thing to remember here is to learn from your mistakes. If you get a disciplinary action against you, just don't do it again. It is very unlikely for the issue to be pushed beyond the disciplinary action if you just don't repeat the same thing again. I've been written up twice in the several years I've worked there, but it never went beyond that. Writeups are sent to corporate and they can stay on your record, but nobody will push the issue if you behave. It's a requirement to keep your writeups in your employee file so if you DO get terminated at any time, they have proof that you were warned about your actions and that you know about it (hence the signature), and that you kept repeating the same issue and that they have a valid reason to terminate you. But it is extremely unlikely that a couple writeups will get you terminated.
That's the best advice I have for you right now. Please comment on this post if you have further questions and I will try to respond to as many of them as I can. Any other specific things or concerns you have you should talk to whoever is in charge at your store. This post is just outlining the things that are most common at pretty much every McDonald's regardless of location. However keep in mind every McDonald's is different and runs differently. This is just a basic guide. I cannot tell you what is going to happen at your location. So if you post a question such as "I did this and this, what will happen to me, will I get in trouble/fired?" That will depend on your store and how they choose to handle it.

Any long time employees ever feel like they are being pushed out the door?.
Iāve been with mcds for 8 years full time. Would consistently get 38 hours and sometimes overtime because we get super busy over the summer. I would always pick up shifts or stay later. Itās expected for hours to reduce in the winter. But summertime?. After the Old GM left we got a new GM, under the new one my hours got cut down from 38 to 30 hours. How am I going to survive off of that?. This started feeling personal. It canāt be labor because they hired massive amount of new people.
I tried talking to the AGM who also been there for years but they couldnāt give me the straight answer. For whatever reason the new GM doesnāt like me and sheās giving my hours away when Iāve been there for so many years. She stuck me on grill when I know every position In the store.
A lot of the OG employees have left too. Now itās just a bunch of new people. Not sure whatās going on but I wasnāt going to stick around.
I landed a new job and I now no longer will be doing food service anymore.
Is this happening with anyone else?

Cuz like what the hell do you mean you docked a point for a guy taking his glove off in the āwrong directionā seriously have you ever actually done this work? Cuz Jesus Christ has LEFT the building. Nitpicking while being completely and utterly USELESS. Slow. Inefficient. And honestly some of these āpoliciesā are straight up DISGUSTING behaviors. Like???????

Iāve noticed more lately that customers will hand me cash with their left hand like normal but then take cash with their right hand but they barely and I mean barely hold it out. So I has a short ass human have to reach far and try not to drop their damn change. While they look at me hoping I donāt drop their change. Just use your other hand please people. Have some sense of anything.
People are strange.
Sorry had to kinda rant a little lol š

Okay so this goes back to earlier this summer (late may), I needed a summer job, I kept getting interviews but they seemed to never talk to me or call back when I told them that I would be returning back to school, (I get it), but working over the summer is how I pay for my tuition and in previous summers employers had absolutely no issues with that. But since this job search was getting literally impossible (100+ applications, 8 interviews that never called back), I applied to McDonalds and told them that I dropped out and that I planned in staying for the foreseeable future. I was almost instantly hired, but I have to go back to school in Late August, the hiring manager seemed to have only hired me because of my availability. I have to quit, but I seriously love all of my managers and coworkers, how do I quit in a way that will minimize damage for my coworkers and myself? Before I get attacked for this, I know it was wrong, but if I didnāt do this I wouldnāt be able to go to school.

With all these new items are any other workers feeling overwhelmed? Iām typically taking orders (our store has 2 lanes) and making drinks + ice creams. At a moderate pace this is definitely manageable, but most days itās simply impossible to do it all by myself. I take an order, while Iām taking an order the other lane has ordered 2 coffees and 3 flurries, then my lane orders 2 more flurries, then before I can even begin to make any drinks or ice creams I have a new order to take and it all just piles up, thereās barely anytime to actually make the orders let alone clean & stock my stations. Iām scrambling all over the place, my coworkers either donāt care enough to help or arenāt āallowedā to, so Iām left irritated and overwhelmed.
Every shift is like this and I dread going to work. Yes this job is very easy but more goes into it than people think

First off. I don't know how many times they're going to change the big visit name. I remember it being called BSV. Now it's called RGR. I'm sure it was called something else before BSV. Just call it MCV (McDonald's Corporate Visit)
I'm Maintenance at my store and this is probably the most stressful part of the year for us folks in this position. The weeks leading up to the visit we're drowned in a shit ton of extra random tasks.
This is what they want me to do.
- Paint the entire god damn outside of the building (No, I'm actually not joking about this one)
- Paint the coral area
- Paint the crew room and maintenance room
- Paint all doors and door frames
- Paint the bathroom ceilings
- Repair some broken tiles
- Repair some concrete that's chipped away outside
- Repair cracks on the building outside
- Paint the parking lot lines
- Fill in cracks in the parking lot asphalt
- Put new mulch in the landscaping
OH! Do all of this AND also find time to get stuff inside such as cleaning done and ready. I also would like to mention that I'm not really a handy man. So if they're expecting professional levels of work, BOY are they in for a good surprise. LOL
I should mention that I'm the only maintenance at my store, and from what I understand they're not pulling anyone from other stores to help me out.
Sooo.. If you've ever wondered what it's like to be Maintenance during a big visit.... Yeah... You regular crew and managers have it easy.

My corporate store has been bought out by a franchise owner. I had my suspicions, my GM has been having us clean and fix equipment like crazy but now on Friday weāre coming in for a mandatory meeting requiring full uniforms and two forms of IDs. My GM said something about the meeting going to be āscaryā for crew which made me put two and two together.
I really want to transfer out into another corporate store but I donāt even know if theyād let me. Iām an RTL2 (ācertified swing managerā). Iāve worked corporate for almost three years and Iām on good terms with GMs of other stores in my patch and even my district manager. My main concern is that I HAVE to move at the end of September and I was counting on cashing in my paid time off around that time for extra moving money, which is now in a limbo.
My store has been sinking the last few months, weāve lost five shift managers and havenāt promoted anybody which is why Iām concerned with being able to transfer out as weāre so spread thin as it is. Is it worth bringing up to my district manager?

Has anyoneās stores cut hours so bad theyāre barely getting any? I know all stores fight labor, but going over two months is crazy. Where I am, jobs are limited as it is. Bi weekly check grossing less every year.

How do you get the fried apple pies out of their fryer basket? We have the basket with one flat side and one bumpy side? We usually flip the basket over and knock it out with a tong and let it rest for the 10mins

Maybe it's where I work at but this doesn't make a lick of sense. Why would I be written over something so minor? Not to toot my own horn, but amongst several employees and managers, I am one of the best at my job. I handle both lines and cash people out (even when it is super busy), and I have very high order accuracy (as cited by the cooks). Several of the employees, including the managers, have said this.
Very rarely do I screw things up on my end and the way I ensure that is by literally programming my brain on the process of taking orders and cashing out. It is so embedded in me to where after work, if I take a nap, I will dream that I am still taking orders and that the headset is beeping.
Some may say, what's so bad about telling the customer to go to the second window? What's bad about it is the fact that number 1, it's common sense and number 2, if I am trying to keep the line steadily moving, I cannot afford to speak unnecessarily.
If the line is wrapped around the building and I have to confirm orders, while also taking them on the headset, tell people their total, and also deal with people who want to add things onto their order at the last minute, and then cash them out, why do I need to tell them that when Ninety percent of customers already know to do it?
This is why jobs like this tend to have high turnover rates. To consider a write up over something as petty as me forgetting to tell the customer to go to 2nd window (when most of them do it without me telling them, sometimes faster than I can give them their receipt) when a) I don't screw up orders, b) my drawer is never short, c) I have high order accuracy, d) customers always compliment me on my quick service and friendly service, and e) I rarely ask the manager for help (only in the case of a customer completely canceling an order, a customer mad about the pricing, a customer needing a discount, an order being over a certain amount, or a certain amount of money's worth items being voided, or requiring manager's approval for a 100 bill to use for payment.
Edit: some of yall clearly didn't read
This is why nobody likes to work these jobs.
EDIT 2: A customer complimented me today about how quick and efficent I am at moving the drive thru :)

Hey! Quick question, I applied to this job posting a couple minutes ago and was offered an interview through the AI system. It then notified me that the schedule was full for interviews and I would be contacted when interview times open up. The listing was just posted yesterday and was titled under āOpen Vacancyā, do you think I should wait 1-2 days and then contact the store or?
r/McDonaldsEmployees • u/Rotten_muttboy69 • 1d ago
Is there anything I can do about being scheduled outside if my availability? My availability is 5-10pm. I was scheduled 4-10pm. I notified my GM already. I think I still have to work the scheduled shift, but can I prevent this happening again? Can I do anything about this?

We should not have table service below a certain price. It was a mistake. Those lazy bums will do ANYTHING but pick up their order at the counter.
My brother in Christ. If you can stand on your feet for 15 seconds I can give you your McFlurry right now.

so most customers are chill about the fact that we physically do not get pennies from the bank to put in the drawers anymore bc of the nationwide penny shortage. however, certain people are the exact opposite of chill...
exhibit a:
*working window*
me: hi, that will be $1.58
customer: okay *hands me a 5*
change is $3.42 and per our rounding policy which is posted on the window, i give her $3.40
customer: where's my pennies?
me: so i don't have any pennies in the drawer to give you, and i gave you 40 cents in change instead of 42 because of our rounding policy.
customer: okay, whatever *with a diabolical amount of sass*
i gave her the coffees she ordered and she drove off, then came back a couple days later with the same order. she gives me exact cash and proceeds to say word for word: "i gave you exact change because you shorted me last time" dawg i simply followed policy idk what to tell you šš
exhibit b, from today:
*working window*
me: hi, that'll be $19.67
customer: *hands me a 20*
again, per our policy i gave him 35 cents instead of 33. MORE than he would get with pennies.
customer: *looks at change, then looks back at me* you guys don't use pennies anymore?
me: because of the penny shortage, i rounded your change up. you gave me a 20, and your total was 19.67, meaning your exact change was 33 cents, and i gave you 35.
no response given. like why are we mad over getting more change.
keep in mind, there is literally a sign on the window explaining the whole thing and there has been for months.
what has your experience been like with the shortage?

I haven't checked the style/nature of posts on this sub but I hope I come across in an understandable way.
Context:
I had an interview last Tuesday after I applied the day before to a Mcdonald's franchise crew member position. I guess they were in need of fast hires?? I'm a hopeful part-timer; this would be my first ever job.
So, I told the guy at the interview/AKA one of the managers that I was available for "lunch/afternoon/evening" part-time shifts (yes I could be available earlier in the day but they don't know that/NOT THE POINT). The guy seemed to say "afternoons/evenings" as he wrote on his notepad. I also let him know that me and my family were going on vacation from July 24th to 27th. He seemed fine with it when he wrote that down. He had an accent so I wonder if there were any miscommunications.
He told me to go to orientation last Friday(hamburger university videos). It didn't train me on how to cook or take orders, is that normal? I hear some mcdonalds train new hires and others don't. Yiiiikes. The orientation lady/manager said that orientation time was technically paid and if I was scheduled by this Tuesday, I would get paid the following Wednesday(spoiler alert I'm not scheduled on Tuesday, whatever).
But anyway the guy who hired me/the manager said I should wait for him to schedule me on Monday/Tuesday.
I went on the teamlive app and tried to do the sceduling avilability requests(no one told me to do it, I still I thought I'd try). But for some reason it wouldn't submit my requests. I got worried since I wasn't getting shift updates this weekend/in advance so I went there today(monday) and asked about it. The guy manager wasn't there but another manager(I assume) said they update shifts on Tuesdays, so I waited and it popped up an hour ago.
I was scheduled for Wednesday at 7:00am-12pm and Sunday at 7:00am-2:00pm. WHO did the scheduling??!?
Why do they not know my availability? I assumed the immediate hiring meant they needed me to pick up a bunch of shifts and that my availability was okay. Why was it disregarded?
I'm technically available in the mornings, but again, that's not the point. They don't know that. I requested a shift drop for the Sunday shift at least, stating that the guy manager(first name only, I wish I knew his last name) knew my availability/vacation situation. I hope they at least figure that out.
Side questions; does every US McDonald's franchise location use the teamlive app and the HCMToGo app?
Questions:
I do have a TacoBell interview in two weeks...do I just quit mcdonald's and try to get the Tacobell job? I was hoping to get some work experience before college starts in a month. The movie theatre/grocery/retail stores keep hiring someone more qualified than me. Sigh. How does quitting mcdonald's work though? I know it's googlable but while I'm here I might as well ask.
Does anyone know what I should do about the miscommunicated shifts? Am I misunderstanding something? Sorry if I'm being an idiot rn. I can clarify more. Tyia.

Do we get bereavement leave from mcdonalds? I just found out i have a funeral coming up in about a week so cannot book it off in time, will I even qualify for leave pay for that day or i wont if I cannot get the shift covered by someone?

I started working at my mcdonaldās (UK) at the start of may, iām contracted to minimum 15 hours a week. So far my availability has been 7 hours on weekdays after my college, but no working on wednesdays, and available all day on weekends.
Due to family circumstances, i wonāt/cant work on saturdays in the coming month.
Because shifts are scheduled 3 weeks in advance i put in an availability request yesterday.
I changed the hours so im also available on wednesday mid week but then got rid of saturday, changed a like for like basically. And explained its due to family circumstances.
This morning iāve got the thing on the app saying itās been rejected, no detail or reason left.
I really canāt work saturdays, and i think the moneys great for part time student, but if i have to choose family over work then i will
Any idea what to do? Iāll message the shift scheduling dude, but judging by the denial with no reason i think it could be tricky
