Yup, and the USDA told them to do it! The government promoted production dog breeding to farmers after WW2 as a “failure-proof” business after a number of disastrous crop failures in the midwestern US.
There was a pet store in my town that sold puppies from an Amish mill. They would put the breeder's name on the info tag for each puppy, and most of them had the same German last name. Reputable breeders don't sell a dozen different breeds or mixed-breeds, but that family did.
