Interesting, TIL. As a Jewish person, reminds me of an eruv line. Tacit admission that the rules are extremely inconvenient, with an officially sanctioned loophole.
Am not Jewish and was otherwise raised atheist/agnostic, so I only recently read about the concept of eruv lines and learned about the Manhattan Eruv. Certainly an interesting way to get around on a technicality.

There are some Amish groups who apparently use electronics as long as the power doesn’t come from the grid
So some of them have solar setups and use smartphones, but they won’t have their house hooked up to the grid
And some of them will rent cars and construction equipment but won’t own them
But it is probably more likely they are Mennonites
