How many time is it morally acceptable to wrap it around this tiny trellis. I don’t feel like getting a bigger one 😅

I bought these may 16, and they have grown so much!

Hoya verticillata is a species which comes up often here, with a fair percentage of identification inquires being one of the many clones within circulation. It is a variable taxon in both vegetative and floral morphology, and especially when sterile it’s hard to blame anyone for seeing multiple phenotypes and thinking they couldn’t possibly be the same species. Natural variation is widely observed among all living organisms, and with a natural range as large as H. verticillata and so many different populations, it becomes easier to understand why one species may take on such a wide variety of presentations. The biggest differences between clones usually lie in vegetative characteristics, and while the floral morphology is largely congruent across the board, there are minor (currently taxonomically irrelevant) differences there as well. I wanted to make a post and talk a little bit about the most common synonyms we still see widely used and why those formerly accepted taxa were sunk and should no longer be used.

Hoya acuta and Hoya parasitica
These names were cited as synonyms of Hoya verticillata var. verticillata as early as 2002 by Focke Albers and Ulrich Meve, within the Illustrated handbook of succulent plants Asclepiadaceae (page 158). These two are presumably straight forward instances of synonymization, where the type specimens were matched to the earlier accepted taxon of Hoya verticillata (and any observable differences between them not considered to hold any taxonomic weight).

Hoya pottsii
There is a little more of a “story” to this formerly accepted name. It was established with its publication in 1829, and remained accepted until 2017. Hoya nicholsoniae gets dragged into this due to David Liddle and Paul Forster citing H. nicholsoniae as a synonym of H. pottsii in their 1992 paper on the Hoya of Papuasia (page 635). But the type specimen selected for Hoya pottsii was a Hoya verticillata collected from China. Michele Rodda sunk Hoya pottsii as a synonym of Hoya verticillata var. verticillata in his 2017 index of Hoya of Borneo (page 54). This means that the Asian populations which were congruent/could be matched to the type are Hoya verticillata, while the Oceanic populations return to their original name of Hoya nicholsoniae (which is no longer a synonym of H. pottsii = H. verticillata).

Hoya wibergiae
This name was supposed to be used to describe material collected by Eva-Karin Wiberg (and was named in honor of her) near Estrella Falls in the Philippines. She sent DK the intended type specimen, which he accurately described within the publication, but then proceeded to select the wrong type specimen, a trinerved phenotype of H. verticillata. So there was a mistake with this publication where a specimen of an earlier accepted species was selected as the type.

These are all instances not of a name “changing”, but an error corrected where a species was erroneously published as separate taxa multiple times, meaning the plants these names were referring to were always Hoya verticillata. It’s worth noting that there are two other infraspecific taxa of Hoya verticillata, H. verticillata var. citrina and H. verticillata var. hendersonii but neither are relevant to this specific topic and are more appropriate to address in general discussion of the species itself.

I want to stress that my visuals are not necessarily meant to be used to identify specific clones. It is never responsible to assign provenance data or accession numbers to plants which lack them, and that information is never part of the actual name of any plant. I hope that this is helpful in wrapping your head around why so many plants are “now” H. verticillata, and I welcome any discussions/thoughts/corrections in the comments. 😄❤️

I had this compacta in a hanging macramé hanger with large S-hooks that spiraled down to support all the larger vines as they spiral down.

This 60” vine snapped due to a blameless situation in which no one can be blamed.

Although I’m Devastated… I’m trying to take it on the chin and prep myself for cutting any part of this beautiful vine and all its peduncles in hopes that I can propagate.

At the same time I do have other long vines and a whole separate 6” pot of shorties . Trying to find something to do with this that will make me feel better! Maybe some gifts to share the love and let others get a chance to propagate and grow for themselves.

Has anyone had this happen before and had any success with propagating a full vine to avoid chopping? Any and all advice or suggestions are welcome!

Hi! I’m new to having hoyas. I just bought some at a flower shop here in Japan. The original soil for the hoya from the shop was super moist. After researching, I tried to mix up what I could find for them to grow better.

Did I put too much of the mixture in the pot? I was surprised that my Hoya roots are really short, so I put a lot of the mix in the pot and tried to cover the roots while trying hard not to cover any leaves.

Is the placement of my hoya ok? It is on a shelf next to the window. There is an air conditioner above the window, but I made it so the air flow goes the opposite direction of the Hoya. I have checked the Hoya placement and I couldn’t feel the airflow from the AC there.

How are the products I used for my mixture (photo 5) ? From left to right the products I used were bamboo charcoal chips, perlite, Western Orchid Potting “Soil” (which was really rocky and barky), and a little bit of indoor houseplant soil.

This is like the 4th time I say I will stop buying planta and here I'm with 3 new ones. I was a little hesitant since I hadn't order from Etsy in over 2 years and i never try two of the 3 hiyas before. Hoya Aceh Gunung Kapi and Hoya Aceh Punkin are new type of hiyas for me ( anyone any experience with them? I have been doing g research but first hand experience will be nice) and Hoya Caudata Sparkling Snow ( I have a Caudata Sumatra and its one of my favorites).

This is our first Hoya to bloom. She has had 2 small pétoncles on her one a couple of weeks ago and one last week but theis week she is really showing out for us. I knew if I was patient it would happen

I've moved a couple around since this but they are all still here and doing great.

I've recently repotted all of my Hoyas into a mineral substrate that came pre-fertilized, so I shouldn't need to add any fertilizer for the next couple of months.

I'm completely new to growing in mineral substrate, so I'm wondering what I should be doing during this period.

Should I just water them? Do I need to worry about pH already, or only once I start fertilizing? Is there anything else I should be paying attention to while they're getting established?

I'd love to hear how you handled the first few months after making the switch.

They just started opening this morning!

I’ve had this Krimson Princess for 3ish years. She’s grown SO MUCH but no peduncles in sight. She’s always been in great light—until a few months ago she was hanging in a SW window, and now she’s in an unobstructed NE window with a grow light (I moved and didn’t want to risk her dropping leaves, which I thankfully avoided!). Do I just need to be more patient?!
