Recipe/Food McDonald’s win!

I was diagnosed 6 weeks ago and meals have been….. hell… I experimented a little bit with eating out, but mostly was always too scared. Today I had a great doctor’s appointment and said fuck it, I deserve a treat. I was craving McDonald’s for a while and decided to try it. Heres what worked for me

Before eating the McDonald’s I chugged 1/2 a fairlife protein shake and ate roasted green beans and peppers (about 1/2 cup)

My McDonald’s order was the $6 meal deal McDouble, no sauce, take off half the bun, I had 2/4 of the nuggets and half a small fry and a Coke Zero.

After lunch I walked 25 minutes and did 50 calf raises and continued to move my body until I had to test (I test after 1 hour)

My reading was 128 and I need to be under 130! So I’ll take that win!

Had to do quite a bit for the reward, but it was worth it and made me happy 😊

When does extra monitoring start for GD?

Is 36w standard? My last pregnancy I had NSTs and weekly ultrasounds starting at 36w, but my baby was also small. No issues with growth this time (baby measuring exactly at 50% at anatomy scan), so does the monitoring schedule change at all? Does it change if you’re on meds or not?

Diet-controlled but baby is estimated too big.

So I'm 28 weeks and 4 days.

GD since 14 weeks. Diet and exercise controlled. Like 95% good numbers. This morning I had a growth scan and baby is estimated to the 99th percentile.

I must say, all my kids are tall for theirs ages and I know scans are not 100% accurate. What worry me is the effect it will have on how my doctors perceived it.

I will see my gyneco next week but the one at the scan said they will probably lower my target numbers and may give insuline even if it's diet controlled.

Have you had a similar situation? what kind of targets did you get after? have some been able to still avoid insuline?

Do elevated spikes matter if they come down within the hour?

Hi all! Looking for advice but will definitely ask my MFM. I had a couple of jerky bars and then a Snickers bar and noticed because I have a CGM my blood sugar after 30 minutes rose to a high of 162 before dropping quickly down to 132 at the one hour mark. My question is, is the 162 considered a spike because it ended up falling into normal range within the hour mark. I would not have even known how high it was without the CGM although I feel like I now can tell when my blood sugar rises bc I feel tired and get short of breath. Any advice or perspective would be helpful, thanks!

Venting about MFM

Upvotes

To make a long story short- took my 1 hour on 7/8, 3 hour on 7/13, and got the call I failed on 7/14 and was told that the MFM would reach out and set up an appt with me. It’s now 7/22 and I saw my OB again and she was shocked they hadn’t called me. So she calls them and they told her “we aren’t taking any appts in July” and she asks “can you schedule her in August?” And their response “oh so you still want us to see her then?” 😑 That was at 9:00 and then I waited until 2:45 and just decided to call them myself. They told me “well the soonest we have available is 8/17” which is wild to me. If I hadn’t had any experience with GD from my previous pregnancy, I would be out of luck for a whole month! It’s just crazy to me that they are so difficult to coordinate with! Pregnant women have such a short window to be seen and delays like those really make a difference.

General Info How long before you noticed diet effects?

I’m on day 4, and I’m not seeing any changes really in my fasting numbers. It’s really well controlled after meals because I walk, but my morning fasting number and time in between meals is not great.

I just cried to my husband because I feel like I’m putting in work but getting nowhere. How long were you eating correctly before noticing a change?

Fasting Trouble

Hello, I was diagnosed with GD at 13 weeks. I’ve been diet controlled, and am now 21+4. The last 3 days (ironically after the 48 hour mark of changing my sensor) I’ve been having a lot of issues with my fasting numbers.

I had severe preeclampsia (delivered at 27+5) that led to premature birth, and then an unfortunate ending in the NICU last pregnancy. So I’m living in a fear that not having my GD controlled 24/7 is going to lead to that.

I called it into my doctor, they only see my 1 hour after eating and my fasting numbers so I called about the pattern the last three nights of numbers in the 110-120s. I’m purely diet controlled, but thinking they’re going to put me on meds.

I’m not sure what I’m looking for. Advice? stories? Help? A place to feel seen? I feel like I’m doing EVERYTHING right and my fasting isn’t going down. Even changing my bed time snacks. I thought I could handle this on my own but I now have an appointment with a nutritionist next Wednesday. My MFM is very old school, but he’s truly the BEST of the best. But I’m filled with such anxiety I just want to make sure this baby is okay.

Rant Feeling really uninspired by food rn

Posting again today - I am just feeling so uninspired by food. I don’t want anything to eat and know I need to but I am so disappointed with this GD. I just want some pasta from my favorite take out place. I am avoiding lettuce because of the outbreak and am feeling weirded out by most veggies and berries because of it. It’s just so frustrating rn and I needed to vent.
I want to cry.

Advice Wanted Just been diagnosed with GD

I’m currently 28wks and was told to post here as I was diagnosed with GD yesterday. I also have fatty liver disease that’s insulin resistant. Has anyone else dealt with that at the same time? I’m already on a diet that my OB recommended back when I was 12wks along. I’ve been losing weight this pregnancy- not on purpose though!!! But my baby is measuring right on time for 28wks and has a really good outlook.

I guess any advice anyone from anyone that may know what to say or do?

Advice Wanted Fasting Numbers Increasing

First ever post on Reddit but I just feel at a loss. I am 33 w 4d with first baby and got diagnosed at 30 weeks. My diabetes team told me to eat a bedtime snack which I’ve never done before, and my fasting numbers for oral glucose test and 2 hour were fine it was just my one hour that was over. So I’ve tried a million different snack combos at night and 50% of the time my numbers are above (in Canada you want > 5.3, I’ve gotten 5.6/5.8) and the other 50% of the time it’s below. But I’m two days in a row of being high now. My OB said keep having snacks anyways but I feel like it’s not helping at all. The only real things I know is days when I wake up feeling rested are days I get my best numbers. And I’m fully within range for meals. Just looking for some advice because I know fasting numbers are the biggest indicator of complications arising.

What the %#*! Do you guys eat for breakfast without spiking?

I’m already on nighttime insulin for my fasting numbers, but lately every single fucking breakfast spikes me and I’m so goddamn tired of it and I do NOT want to go on mealtime insulin too but I’m just frustrated. So frustrated.

The only thing that doesn’t spike me is if I eat eggs just by itself. I cannot introduce ANY carbs or it spikes me. One slice of bread? Fucked. 8.0 mmol. Eggs and a side of beans? 9.0 mmol. Eggs and fruit? Absolutely not. I just don’t know what else I can pair it with. This morning I had a bowl of chia seed pudding and I’m sitting at a 7.8 mmol 1 hour after.

I’m so tired of eggs I want to die every time I have to make them in the morning lol. What works I guess has been a fair life shake along with my eggs to help keep me full but it’s not as nice as having something yummy and carby.

SOS. I’m losing my marbles and I have 12 weeks more of this to endure.

Gestational diabetes for the second time

Im so upset. Test results came back as a 147 and now I have to take the 3 hour test. My first pregnancy was MISERABLE with GD. I feel so defeated, I kept telling my self I would be more prepared this time but it’s still so unfair.

Rant Spouse Doesn’t Get It

I need to preface this with the fact that my husband is a very good guy. He’s very smart and motivated. Has a great career. He is a great dad. He is generally very calm and levelheaded which can admittedly balance me out some (especially when pregnant). But he’s not very emotive, or thoughtful. He certainly doesn’t verbally express support. Sometimes he acts a little superior.

I was diagnosed with GDM about 10 days ago. I am a healthcare professional (husband is not), so have a good understanding of what this means, what this entails, and how to manage it. Despite this, I’m having an incredibly hard time with this diagnosis. I’m feeling like a failure (despite being well aware of the clinical causes) and worrying about what this means for baby and for me postpartum. I’ve been crying A LOT. The first night after diagnosis we went out to dinner at a place I knew I could eat lower carb. He orders a milk shake in front of me. I sort of jokingly say that’s the last time he orders sweets in front of me. He replies that he doesn’t subscribe to the belief that he should suffer just because I am, and cushions it by adding that belief extends both ways and in any context. I cry again, express feeling unsupported etc etc etc. He sort of apologizes, but says that I just need to tell him what I need from him. At a later time when I’m calmer is sit down and say I don’t even need that much support since I have the knowledge to manage this. I say I need emotional support and detail what dietary changes will entail. He’s totally okay with this and since I do most of the cooking he has no complaints- he’ll eat whatever I make happily. I just sort of accept that he’s not very emotive or empathetic (to be fair he probably wouldn’t expect effusive verbal support from me if the roles were reversed). We move on. He shows zero interest in what my numbers are/the details of how I’m managing.

A week later, I wake up to find that he has eaten the low carb lunch that I meal prepped (I work outside the home). I am furious. Not only am I now running late, I’m feeling like he is not only unsupportive, but actively sabotaging my efforts. I have never once in all our time together made his lunches for him. Sometimes there are big batch leftovers in the fridge and he’ll put together his own plate, but never ever have I prepared individual Tupperware to go for him. I am yelling and slamming around the kitchen as I try to prep a new lunch quickly. He has the nerve to yell at me that this was a mistake and he’s sorry, but that I need to calm down and stop yelling at him for a simple mistake. I am crying again. He yells how was he supposed to know, because I don’t typically meal prep for myself either. I yell back that things have changed - duh! How can he be unaware that my eating habits have changed? He says I need to give him a break he’s still catching up. I say, how nice, I in fact don’t have the luxury of easing into this change. He says some other mean things about how he could start freaking out every time I make a mistake and see how that goes. I leave the house in tears. Am I crazy? Even with a little time to reflect, I don’t think this was truly an innocent mistake. I think he knew the meal wasn’t for him, but he didn’t think it was a big deal. And that does make me mad. But I admit it’s hard to judge intent

But it’s also pretty rare for us to have blow out yelling fights period. To have 2 in one week is extremely unusual. So now I’m also worrying about the health of our marriage in addition to being livid about the lack of emotional and actionable support.

SO I guess here I am. Just ranting on Reddit. Hoping the next 10 weeks go quickly.

Support Requested Baby measuring small

I am 36 weeks today and I just had a growth scan done. I have one more next week to determine when they will induce me. But according to my growth scan today, my baby is now measuring 11th percentile. Every growth scan her percentile has gone down. I’m currently medicated with insulin for bedtime at 50 units due to really bad insulin resistance for fasting levels. Did anyone else have really small babies despite having GD? I feel she’s just getting smaller and smaller and it’s worrying me.

The adhesive is already rolling up quite badly, and i know they say to cut the bad parts and put down med tape over jr. I'm worried that it won't be strong enough haha. Especially that I'm only 30 weeks rn, i was curious if anyone had any recs for adhesive pactches for their cgms?

Advice Wanted Dexcom 101

Alrighty, just been diagnosed with GD today - high fasting. Meal numbers are normal. But they still want me to test 4x/day. For my test period I was using a glucometer. I don’t mind it but a CGM seems like it would be easier for 12 more weeks. It’s not cheap though, so please give me opinions!! Worth it? Are the numbers comparable to finger pricks? Other advice?

Asking recommendation for switching OBGYN

Asking for my wife

She's 34 weeks pregnant today, diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks. Has been taking 3x500mg metphormin and the fasting number is still difficult to control so she may soon be starting insulin. All other post meal numbers - they have never spiked.

So we are going to Women's health center since beginning of pregnancy as the Hospital we wanted to go *Henry Ford* didn't have immediate appointment available when we found out she was pregnant. This center has like 5-6 OBGYNs , where we take appointment every time with a different one so during delivery we know the doctor well by then.

This small center is affliated with this hospital and the doctors here deliver the baby at Henry Ford hospital.

At her 24th week return OB appointment, the assistant measured her BP high which was re-taken after 30-50 minutes - it again came high so the Doctor sent us to emergency L&D at Henry Ford hospital, where she was monitored for 2 hours and all blood tests were done to rule out anything.

All reports were good and not even a single spike was recorded during triage stay. Fair to say this day was very stressful for her and me.

I also bought a BP monitor to measure her BP twice a day.

next week's follow up OB appointment, they again measured her BP high so I asked the doctor to measure it herself as none of the measurement i took at home ever came high. When she measured she immediately noticed incorrect cuff size, and when re-taken with larger cuff it came normal.

At her 27th week OB appointment again the assistant measured her BP high. I told her to use larger size cuff and then it came back normal. It took them 3 visits to even put in her chart to use larger size cuff. Before every OB visit, my wife started having anxiety and stress. This was STRIKE ONE.

As i mentioned she was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks and on a diet which is managing her numbers, except fasting one. From 32 weeks they started 2 NST per week and 1 AFI every week.

During the second NST visit, baby's heartbeat was great entire time (130 baseline with accelerations) and it didn't dip below 120 at all for first 20-25 minutes. As soon as the Doctor came in, she started moving around the sensor and somehow the reading went below 120 and again started coming back up and was normal after. But the doctor didn't bother to check the previous 20 minutes NST and directly as soon as she saw the dip said she's sending us to L&D at Henry ford hospital. We were stressed and went to the hospital where she was on NST for 4 hours. No decelerations noted during entire stay and we were sent home.

At the week's second NST visit at our center, everything went well.

Now this week we had our third NST, she was monitored for around 30 minutes , doctor came midway through it and again moved around the sensor, monitored for another 10-15 minutes. The result she said is NST reactive, which is good I know. But the baseline she told the assistant to write is 120. Whereas I was there the whole time, at maximum it touched 120 maybe 2 or 3 times and it was above 130 all time. I didn't ask the question then to doctor and thought once the NST result is available , i will check it myself and then ask if it's true.

So today the NST became available and I uploaded on chatgpt to ask baseline, it confirmed basically 135. So i asked another doctor from same women's health center about it - that why did the other doctor that day mention baseline 120 and also send her the NST as attachment.

Even she replied yes the baseline looks 135 but even 120 which is noted is within the healthy spectrum 110-160 and reactive so its good.

For which I replied 'shouldn't the 135 value be reflected then '

That doctor took much offense to it and basically said she's concerned that we are not trusting the practice and doubting her/her partners there. Also, to not contact her again without wife present and future questions only face to face. STRIKE TWO.

At this point, I feel it is our job to ask questions to understand what is going on so we are prepared. They have made us feel like shit honestly. Cannot question them. I am not qualified to perform what they do, but understanding something which we don't know I feel is part of their job , specially for mother and FOB.

There is always anxiety before visits.

Do you feel we should switch OBGYN directly to hospital ?

Recipe/Food Huge win!

My fasting glucose was 81 this morning so I took a risk and made sourdough discard waffles.

My breakfast consisted of:
2 hard boiled eggs
3 chicken sausage links (the Costco frozen ones)
1 full sourdough waffle with a tbsp of peanut butter and 1 tbsp maple syrup

Happy to report that my post breakfast reading was 138! I didn’t go on a walk or anything. Just got ready and headed to work.

Recipe:
1/2 cup sourdough discard (does not need to be active)
1 cup milk (I used fat free)
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 1/4 cup bread flour (AP will also work)
1 tsp salt
1 large egg
1 tbsp oil (I used avocado oil)

Mix the discard, flour, and milk together and let it sit for 20 mins before adding the rest of the ingredients.

This can also make pancakes.

I think the sourdough factor helps with the blood sugar.

Advice Wanted Meter variation. What should I believe?

I have been tracking my blood glucose levels for the past 2 weeks with the Contour meter. Today I was out when my hour post meal test was supposed to be measured. I had the meter with me and I measured 147 (which is way higher than I ever measure before). I arrived home 15 min later, washed my hands and measured again: 107. That's a huge difference. I thought maybe I had some sugar on my hands (I had eaten a fruit in the morning).

To test I did a double measurement (2 min apart) at lunch. Everything the same but using different fingers on different hands: one was 70 the other was 81!!! Now I don't know of I trust my meter anymore. Online the error margin for my meter is announced to be around 5-6% and this is way more.
Did anyone ever have this problem? Should I try and get a new meter?

Chat Chat Chat What will you take with you after graduating?

Let’s look at the bright side of GD! I know we’re all hating this and craving all the sugar and carbs. I’ve been on the diet for over a month now, and although I’m sick of greek yoghurt and chicken salads, I also have to admit I’ve learned a lot about healthy eating and exercise. It’s a big difference between reading about this stuff, and to see the results in real time 2 hrs after every meal.

So what have you learned that you will actually take with you after birth?

For me, I think breakfasts will look very different. No more starting the day with a toast and orange juice. And I’ll probably also continue with having a fiber heavy snack before bedtime. Also - I’ve discovered some new favorite staple foods, like always having lots of vegetables, olives and feta cheese in the fridge. I’ve never made fancier salads than this summer :)

Anyone switch from Basaglar to Insulin Glargine-yfgn? Insurance stopped covering Basaglar.

Hi everyone,
I’ve been on Basaglar for about a month for gestational diabetes, and it’s been working well for me. Unfortunately, my insurance has now decided they won’t cover it anymore and is switching me to insulin glargine-yfgn.
I’m a little nervous about changing insulins, especially during pregnancy. Has anyone here switched from Basaglar to insulin glargine-yfgn? Was your blood sugar control about the same, or did you notice any differences in fasting numbers, side effects, or injection comfort?
I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks in advance!
