Like the title says, I'm from Türkiye and I have a varied music taste with Rock, Metal, Rap, Jazz all the way to our local folk genres. I've came across this clip on my feed and immediately loved the unique style, after some research I found out it is flamenco made by a Turkish guy. Then I kinda remembered also listening to a Spanish guitar player in a jazz fest kind of thing and I think his name was Vicente and that concert was also very good. I'm new to the sub so I'm wondering what do you guys think about this local rendition of this music style?

I went to the Oregon country fair this weekend and watched an amazing flamenco group perform at one of the stages. It was such a treat!

I loved that they asked for volunteers to participate in Sevillanas with their dancers. Let me tell you, dancing sevillanas with new friends AND in front of an audience is HARD. No one told me that it takes reading the room (the musicians, singers, and other dancers), good eye contact with your partner, and so many other variables that can overwhelm your brain to dance it properly!

It was very vulnerable but I am so glad that the group was welcoming and encouraging, flamenco is warm community after all. I learned a lot and it brought me so much joy!
To those who ever get the opportunity to participate in sevillanas or other dances as an audience with a flamenco show, I say go for it and get on that stage!

hey friend, I am a 17 y/o artist from the philippines and I have fallen in love with flamenco music. I am scared of making music inspired by it because I may be criticized because im not andalusian.

Yes, I do study it, I study it almost everyday and write everything i find out in my journal. I am currently reading a pdf of a book titled "flamenco music: history, forms, and culture" written by Peter Manuel, and I strive to learn spanish everyday + I'm finishing the movie Flamenco (1995).

are there any advice or notes i should keep in mind to respect the culture? I dont want to appropriate it.

My wife bought this portable wooden floor to practice flamenco at home, but it’s much more slippery than the studio floors she’s used to dancing on. I’m looking for a permanent solution to increase the grip, not something temporary like rosin or sprays that have to be reapplied.

Has anyone modified a practice floor like this? Would sanding the finish and applying a different polyurethane or another type of finish be the right approach? If so, what finish would you recommend that provides more traction while still being appropriate for flamenco?

Carmen Amaya nació en el Somorrostro, un asentamiento de chabolas gitano que existió pegado al mar en Barcelona hasta los años 60 (barraca número 48, para ser exactos). Ni siquiera se sabe con certeza el año en que nació: ella siempre celebró su cumpleaños el 2 de noviembre, pero las fuentes oscilan entre 1913 y 1918. Literalmente no hay partida de nacimiento confiable para una de las bailarinas más importantes del siglo XX.

Lo que sí se sabe es que no tuvo maestros. Aprendió mirando a su padre tocar la guitarra en tabernas y bailando descalza en la arena de la playa. Ella misma lo decía: que su idea del movimiento le vino del ritmo de las olas.

A los 11 años ya bailaba con gitanos adultos en tablaos del Barrio Chino de Barcelona, y en 1929/1930 (las fuentes ni siquiera se ponen de acuerdo en el año exacto) bailó frente al Rey Alfonso XIII en la inauguración del Poble Espanyol, durante la Exposición Internacional de Barcelona. Una nena de una barraca, bailando para la realeza, unos años antes de que esa misma monarquía se fuera al exilio.

Lo que la hizo única, más allá de la anécdota real, fue que rompió un código de género que nadie tocaba: bailaba con traje de hombre y pantalón, no con bata de cola, y metía los brazos hacia adentro en vez de abrirlos "a lo andaluz". Un crítico de la época dijo que parecía haber nacido ya sabiendo bailar, que no tenía escuela ni academia detrás.

Con la Guerra Civil cruzó a pie hacia Portugal con su familia y de ahí se embarcó a Buenos Aires. Ahí arrancó su carrera internacional: bailó en la Casa Blanca para Roosevelt, la aplaudieron Chaplin, Cocteau, Orson Welles y Greta Garbo, hizo cine en Hollywood. Hay una anécdota buenísima de una noche en un hotel de Nueva York en la que se puso a asar sardinas en su habitación para toda la compañía y terminó quemando dos mesas carísimas.

Murió en 1963, en su casa de Begur, de una insuficiencia renal que arrastraba hacía años. Terminó de filmar su última película, "Los Tarantos", ya gravemente enferma, y esa misma temporada, en un show en Gandía, dejó de bailar a mitad de la función.

Lo que más me impresiona no es solo el ascenso (de una barraca a la Casa Blanca), sino que lo logró sin romper nunca con el Somorrostro: siempre viajaba con toda la familia, se gastaba la plata que ganaba casi al toque, y la comunidad gitana la lloró por España y Francia enteras cuando murió.

¿Conocían la historia? Tengo curiosidad por si hay otros artistas gitanos de esa época con historias parecidas que merecerían ser más conocidos, en España o en otros países. También me quedó la duda de si alguien tiene más info confiable sobre el año real de nacimiento, porque las fuentes se contradicen bastante.

The theme starts about 1:00 into "Yr". I thought this was curious. Do you know if this is Garabrek's melody or a traditional flamenco tune? I know Paco was no stranger to jazz, so either seems possible.

So I’ve been practicing simple flamenco pieces & songs for a little bit now. (Just some pop-y stuff really)…never was a musician so I wasn’t as familiar with rhythm & such…it was just a tiny hobby.

Then, I recently decided to take it more seriously and learn the different palos. But after checking those rhythms out, I simply can’t understand how you can just feel them (with all their variations) without constantly counting. You can just instinctively pause & play at the correct beats?? Like I once tried clapping along to Moraíto and this guy must’ve been practicing witchcraft…

How can I think about it and what do I do to improve?

Hola, que tal estoy de visita por granada me apasiona el flamenco y quería visitar un tablao.

Lo cierto es que un familiar me recomendó hace un para de semanas visitar el Tablao Flamenco La Alboreá, me comentó que su experiencia alli, y al parecer fue inolvidable, salió de alli super contento, sobretodo por el trato y por el espectáculo que fue fue maravilloso.

Hi, where to learn old flamenco like on Youtube: "Diego Del Gastor | Bulerias", "PACO CEPERO-RECITAL" (I'm not posting links because my post gets deleted).

I tried Flamenco Explained courses for a few months but it seems this guy teaches modern flamenco. I also bought some course on "Flamenco Live" but it was also modern.

What should I look for in Google? Is it called "Jerez"? Old school?

I am mostly interested in playing bulerias, not rumba, not songs, not soleares (but maybe a little bit).
