Hi, welcome. New to DDO? Returning? Check here first!

What is Dungeons and Dragons Online?

DDO is an action adventure MMORPG that originally released in 2006. It is set (primarily) in the Eberron campaign setting and is loosely based on the D&D 3.5 ruleset. Currently maintained and frequently updated by the folks at Standing Stone Games.

Is this a table top simulator or match making service for the D&D TTRPG?

Nope.

What makes DDO unique compared to any other MMO?

There are two key differences that make DDO stand out.

The first is the complex and interesting dungeons. Most dungeons in MMOs (or let's face it, most modern video games) tend to be a linear glorified hallway with a boss at the end.

In DDO, Dungeons have multiple objectives, dead ends, secret rooms, pit traps, puzzles, platforming and more keeping them fresh and interesting. To add to the D&D feel, a 'narrator' will describe the dungeon and events as they happen similar to what a table top DM would do!

The second is the reincarnation system. In other MMOs you hit level cap and then sit there waiting for the next expansion or level up alts.

DDO allows you to reincarnate once you hit the cap. You start over at level 1 choosing a new class and race to level up all over again. Doing so will grant your character a small permanent boost in power. It's not so much that you're required to do them to be valuable to high level raiding, but they do make stomping the early/mid game fun and allow you to tackle greater challenges.

What's the catch?

Most of DDO is behind a paywall. You can try it out for free but if you want to have enough content for it to feel like a complete game, expect to eventually pay at least ~40$. You can optionally grind out in game points to unlock most things but it is quite slow.

The second issue is that Standing Stone Games is a small company. This means that long standing issues, imbalances and bugs will most likely not get fixed. If you have a technical issue and submit a help request there's a good chance you'll never hear back. They do what they can but they're focused on trying to keep the lights on.

Is it a dead game?

No. New updates are released regularly and each server will have ~500 people on during prime time and ~100ish during off peak hours. DDO has maintained these numbers for years at this point so it doesn't feel like the game is being abandoned.

It's one of the last MMO's that truly feels like a community. You'll quickly get to know the big names on your server, the power guild, the RP guild, the 'we accept anybody' guild, etc... You'll rarely run into people who are selfish or are jerks. The playerbase is above the age curve for an online game, it's not uncommon guild chat will be about mowing lawns.

I'm a returning player, what have I missed?

There's simply too much new content and constant class balancing tweaks to list but at its core DDO hasn't changed much. The six biggest additions/changes would probably be:

  • The old servers were merged, giving us 4 servers (3 US based, 1 EU based). Characters were not transferred automatically. If you're a returning player and just now reading this you have roughly until 2027 to transfer off the old servers.
  • The 'Reaper' difficulty system allowing players even higher levels of challenge.
  • Hardcore league. Every so often SSG opens up a hardcore server with permadeath for a few weeks.
  • Legendary leveling introduced. Even higher levels above 30 that aren't tied to the reincarnation system.
  • Racial reincarnate like you would heroic reincarnation and every race has a unique enhancement tree.
  • New universal enhancement trees that make it easier to level up if you screw up your build.

Where can I get more information?

Can I use iconic races to earn epic past lives?

I was looking and I didn't see an answer on the wiki and my search ended up as a dead end. My guess is no, but I have been wrong before. Thanks in advance.

Advice on toon progression

So I've maxed out my main toon. 3x PL of heroic, iconic, racial and epic. (Only missing duergar). I have moved onto another toon with the idea to get all the relevant PL for e melee build. Currently got 3 fighter, 3 barb, 2 pally, 2 ranger can't remember all right now.

Currently doing a 18 warlock 1 barb 1 fighter pdk. Looking at 16 druid, 2 AoTS warlock, 2 fighter pdk next life. Thoughts or advice?

Strange builds?

So one thing I love about this game is how off the beaten path you can go with builds. You could make a Cleric that specializes in longbows or a Melee wizard. So it got me wondering, has anyone made a strange or different build that is just because it's something you want? Like it's something many will tell you is not very good or meta but you do it because you want it.

Is Silver Flame Nugget Only Once Per Life?

I just turned in my very first Silver Flame Nugget for some armor, but I wanted the helmet too, so I tried asking for another one, but while I was able to accept the quest again, I didn't get a nugget, and the guy said I already had one when I told him I lost it. Can you only do the Nugget quest once per life? The wiki didn't say.

Chat bug issues

Does anyone know if adressing the constant chat bug issues it something DDO is considering? I have a server my friends and I chat on (Mumble.com), but not being able to read chat when in a pug is super tedious. Does anyone know if its a settings issue that I can fix? I'm super frustrated right now.

Newbie/Training raid; Vault of Night on Thrane, Sunday, 7/26

So, to preface: I'm a long-time DDO vet, started playing back before the game went free to play, and have played off and on ever since. Recently came back after four years or so of not playing much, and recruited a few friends to run a weekly static group. One friend who is a similarly-old vet but also coming back after years away from the game, and several friends who are either brand new to the game, or have never gotten past the very low levels. We've been playing weekly for several months now and are making good progress.

And it's time for us to run the Vault of Night. I am... or, at least, I used to be pretty familiar with the raid, but I haven't run it in at least half a decade, and even if I was more comfortable with it, I wouldn't want to try running with five people, three of whom are brand new and have never seen ti before.

So; I'm hoping some folks would be interested in coming along for a slow, newbie-friendly run of VoN 5 & 6, Heroic Elite, at level (we are currently level 12), so some new players can see the whole thing. Unless something drastic interferes, it will be Sunday, July 26, probably looking to start around 2:30 PM US Central time (so 3:30 eastern, 12:30 pacific); I'll be putting the group together starting earlier than that (starting at 2), and if we're ready to go earlier than we can kick off earlier.

Our regular static group consists of:

Warchanter/VKF melee bard

Dark monk (Wis-based melee)

Warpriest/Falconry melee cleric

KotC/Horizon Walker archer Paladin

Lightning caster artificer (my character)

So we have most bases covered, but especially for VoN5 having a trapper with evasion would be handy. If someone is willing to step up to provide leadership or teaching, that would be nice - I think I know the raid well enough to manage, but like I said, it's been at least 5 years so a few details are fuzzy.

And, of course, if anyone else is new to the game and has a character in the right level range and wants a crack at the raid, you'd be welcome as well.

Guild renown farming

Anyone know of any quests with a lot of chests in a short amount of time other than the colaborator? I'm farming for guild renown I would prefer the quests be level level 3 to 4 or level 6 to 7 or level 14 to 15 including if one does the quest on a higher difficulty like my example

First Timer looking for Build Advice

Hi, I've played on-and-off for years and I've finally gotten a character into Epic territory for my very first time. I'm currently level 21, with an EK + Vamp (Wiz 20) planning to use Fatesinger + Dread + Unyielding throughout Epic. I'm soloing Elite around my level, and pretty content with the build is capable of so far. To me, the synergy seems pretty sound at a glance, but I'm curious what people would have to say. What advice do you all have for me?

(Also I can provide more details on the build if necessary, it doesn't look like the sub allows image uploads to show my point investments)

Question about Metamagic "Stacking" with the Fatesinger's (T4) Attunement

Do metamagic attunements stack with typical Metamagic as well? I have no reason to believe that it would since imo 4x range/duration from a dual enlarge/extend would be insane... (plus you can't eschew materials twice) but that's kinda the point of epic destinies so if anybody knows pls lmk lol

New Player Guides - First Weekend

Hello all,

I run a niche AD&D-centric YouTube channel (around 5k subs, been around since 2018, mostly TTRPG content) and have recently returned to DDO. (I played a ton at launch 20 years ago) To help new players, I started a new player video series for "Your First Weekend."

Each video is angled toward completely new players is at 28 +/- videos now, each based on a single quest or run.

Feel free to pop by. No monetization. Old school.

Share the light and call upon - Golem not working

So I've been testing out a couple of things prior to the update today and noticed some things. I'm building one of my toons out as a summoner, meaning I've taken the augment summoning feats into epic, am wearing the deadly diabolist set and have enhancements taken from both primal avatar and magus of the eclipse to beef them up considerably, though after some of the testing I've done I'm pretty sure there are some things within the play style that have just been plain forgotten about. I was told by my guild that devs sometimes take a look at these forums, so this is an attempt to bring some things to their attention. For those worried that I'm trying to shake up the meta, do not worry. This will never be meta, I understand, but it is a great way to learn dungeons while playing in an environment where I'm not running a million miles per hour or spamming wings. There is a minor community interested in using summons, hirelings and pets, and this is geared towards lending them a hand. So if there is no constructive input you have towards this subject, or you have personally never delved as far as humanly possible in this subject matter in this current patch, please feel free to skip this entirely. This is purely to bring to the attention of the devs that one or more of the mechanics in the game are not working as intended.

  1. In an effort to maximize my summons, I decided to spec into magus of the eclipse, since it has the only summons I think are worth summoning. However when using the golem summon, I've found that nothing heals them as it should. I had the clay golem standing in acid fog and it received no healing whatsoever. I also cast flame strike on the iron golem and despite the damage being treated as fire damage when striking enemies vulnerable to fire, it did not heal the iron golem whatsoever. Didn't even bother to test electricity on the flesh golem as I'm pretty sure they will also receive no healing.

  2. Share the light states that your summoned creatures would share in the damage aura that magus of the eclipse destiny mantle provides. This is simply not the case... I have tried summoning monsters from the base spellbook (summon monster I through IX), I've tried summoning Vulkoor's Avatar, and of course, call upon - Golem which was the whole premise of these tests. The aura doesn't affect your summons at all , not a single one.

The idea was to have extremely tanky summons that soak up damage and maintain aggro while being healed by offensive spells. There is no way to know for certain if all the feats actually apply, but the golemsfrom this epic destiny are just as tanky as the shield golem from sharn and the aura from the mantle would actually make them viable for anyone trying to build out a summoner druid, cleric, wizard or warlock. If there is any way we as players could get some kind of confirmation that these feats and nodes on the tree are working as intended, that would be wonderful. If they are not, perhaps an explanation as to why they aren't or some sort of plan going forward would be appreciated.

EDIT: If there are other interactions between player and pet/summon/hirelings that you have noticed as a player that you wish to bring to a dev's attention, this is the thread to do it. We are here to ensure players don't have to be pigeonholed into a single play style, even when playing solo.

Pale Master build

Hello, I have a wiz 9 and would like some advice for my build.

I want to pick 2 art levels for crossbows, disable device and runearm.

Also i have out 12 points into harper agent for int -> dmg and the other one which uses int for dc

2 points inquisitive for summon bolts

Rest into pale master, am focusing on the left side with 1 point into skelly for QoL switches levers with traps etc.

I find myself using necrotic bolt, doing 30-40 damage and that's it. I have SF and GSF necro and with the Lich shroud active at all times for the +2 necro dc core upgrade.

I either use necrotic bolt, or the snowball swarm because of aoe and sort of good damage. For healing i use death aura or the spell that does aoe from your body with negative spell power, like Negative Burst etc.

What are your siggestions so i can do damage? I want to get barovian repeating cross at lvl10 when i put points into art for more damage.

Also as context i want to use this character for raids later on with my girlfriend who has a level 17 ranger and she was missing a trapper so those 2 points in art are self explanatory.

Build Help

I will be reincarnating with friends soon and am looking for advice on some builds.

Ok so I am going onto my 4th life, my play group tends to drop in and out, so I tend to build characters that are solo-viable (at least hard, if not elite). We have been trying to push reaper, have gotten up to R5. I have done Paladin, Bard, and Monk, and am probably going to play the healer for this life, which brings me to my request....

I don't like ally targeting in DDO, so I would prefer something that can do AoE heals/cure alls, and ideally something that also let's me do something besides healing during easier fights. I also would like this character to be able to solo stuff on, ideally elite, but at least hard difficulty if needed, since I am not a fan of pickup groups. Any advice?

Raid loot etiquette

Wanted everyone's opinion on this, won footfalls of the dracolich from a recent TON PUG raid and passed it to a friend. No one commented on it but it made me think, in other MMOs this would be poor etiquette without letting others roll on it, but in DDO since everyone gets loot preassigned, if you don't loot it, is it yours to do with as you please?

It seems that Earth Elemental AI is broken

I do not know if it is only me, but if any earth elemental use earth grab they stay locked in the animation forever. Whatever you do they do not exit the animation.

It also occurs on summon and hireling summon.

Red Fens bugs

I finished the final test in the Red Fens, Into the Deep, and turned in the quest to Ta Prin and received the reward. But when I go back to the Drow, he still doesn't see the quest as finished. Is this a bug or did I miss doing something? How do I fix this? TIA

New builds sharing website

Hey everyone :)

I have been working in the past few weeks on a website: ddobuildhub.com
It was made for sharing builds, with the thought of being able to easily search for specific builds by tags or requirements.

You are able to import builds from ddobuilder ( .DDOBuild files ) to fill out the whole build, so its very quick to upload.

The hope is that this becomes the default place to upload a build, and as the site grows and I add more tags, it will be really easy to search and filter to find builds that are exactly for your needs. For example, searching for an Eladrin ranger build, made for leveling, but is also a first lifer, and more

It doesn't have any ads / payments, so it's completely free. I would love for you to try it, and of course I'm going to continue working on it and adding more stuff as time goes on based on feedback.

Hope to see some of your builds there ^^

Would Cormyr be the preferred server for solo players?

I've seen several posts where people have asked for server recommendations, and Shadowdale, Thrane, and Moonsea are the usual recommendations, for various reasons - groups, playstyle, location. I play solo on Cormyr, in a good guild, Auction houses are busy enough. Am I missing something? I'veplayed on Shadowdale, it seems more crowded, which makes little difference, and maybe a very tiny bit more lag?
