This megathread is for all discussion related to the ongoing CJP protests, Chennai’s response, and any peaceful solidarity activities being considered in the city.

Several members have asked why there has been limited public response in Chennai and whether residents should organize or participate in a peaceful solidarity gathering. Please use this thread to:

  • Discuss the protests and the issues being raised
  • Share verified news and updates
  • Discuss Chennai’s response or lack of response
  • Share details of confirmed peaceful gatherings in Chennai
  • Coordinate lawful solidarity activities
  • Offer differing views on the movement and its demands

A few ground rules:

  1. Share verified information. Claims about protests, arrests, injuries, organizers, permissions, or event details must be accompanied by a credible source.
  2. Do not post private personal information. Share public organizer pages or publicly available announcements, not personal phone numbers, addresses, or screenshots containing private information.
  3. No calls for violence, vandalism, harassment, or disruption of essential services.
  4. Remain civil. Criticism of governments, political parties, public figures, protesters, and the movement is allowed. Personal attacks, communal abuse, casteism, sexism, and targeted harassment are not.
  5. The moderators are not organizing or endorsing any gathering. Anyone attending an event should independently verify its organizers, permissions, location, and safety arrangements.

To keep the subreddit usable, all general questions, opinions, calls for solidarity, and Chennai-related coordination concerning the CJP protests must remain in this megathread.

New standalone posts on the same subject will be removed and redirected here. Major verified developments may be allowed separately at moderator discretion.

Rant Amazing City Planners

Post image

So you guys must remember a couple of months back when they chopped down such nice big trees on Sardar Patel Road under the guise of road expansion to accommodate traffic.

Such nice big trees were cut down without sense or sanity to be replaced by a now very long traffic jam that extends all the way to bloody governors bungalow because the choke point of the bridge two way! So now 3 lanes of traffic goes into ONE lane of bridge resulting in this mess! All they have to do is make that bridge one way only and yet no one does. People have no driving sense as it is crossing across lanes and blocking straight going traffic and going wrong ways and now this mess.

Rant Wasting people's time. Don't believe TVKs promises.

I saw a news story saying that common people can meet Aadhav Arjuna the sports minister from 7-10 am in Nehru Stadium Chennai. I believed that, and travelled from my City to Chennai to meet him. AND GUESS WHAT HE WAS NOT THERE. There were other people as well who travelled from their cities after seeing this news only to be fooled. A complete waste of my time and money. Isn't my time precious. They are bloody making fools out of people. If there is a journalist here on reddit please write an article because ITS FRUSTRATING FOR COMMON PEOPLE LIKE ME. I DON'T WANT OTHER PEOPLE TO WASTE THEIR TIME. My point is that why announce something that is clearly not possible. Atleast fix specific days for meeting.

FYI : I AM NOT SAYING THAT THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT WAS BETTER. THEY ALSO DIDN'T RESPOND. I BELIEVED TVK AND THAT'S WHY I TRAVELLED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

I also saw this info on the TV.

Rant Got rear ended on OMR

I was commuting to work today from Sholinganallur when I got rear ended on the small bridge crossing the canal. The cab driver who rear ended my bike seemed apologetic and even stopped to explain his side just to clear his name. Everybody else was honking incessantly and nobody even bothered to check. Is this normal?

P.S: No damages were sustained to my vehicle or to me. Just surprised at how inconsiderate other motorists can be.

AskChennai Airport arrival

What is really the best way to come out of the domestic arrival and take a taxi or have someone pick me. The current process is very messed up. Any easy way to get a taxi without going to aero west ? One trip we had a newborn and someone asked us to stay outside the arrivals and ask the driver to come and pick us, but no-one was allowed Even the security called him (maybe the driver wasn't aware). The buggy things take forever. What are the options to get out of the airport. I hear the metro is great but with kids and luggage makes it harder.

Books/Food/Hobby/Travel What should we look for while buying fish and other seafood?

please help me out here!! for a very long period of time i just cooked whatever fish was brought home by my husband. but over time i realised that buying fish is only half the job cause the cooking, cleaning and prep usually falls on us moms or whoever is cooking it at home.

the thing is sometimes the fish isn't cleaned properly, then sometimes the cuts are inconsistent and a lot of times there’s so much of waste, and i single handedly have to deal with all this. see, if the fish comes without all the problems that i mentioned above, then i also feel good while cooking because i really love cooking but these issues with cuts and cleanliness causes me a headache.

can you please share what are the things anyone should look for while buying seafood so the person cooking it later doesn't have to spend hours fixing everything at home?

Rant Don't go to ukiyo in spencer plaza

Rude staff, making fun of customers, acting as if they are running a louis vuitton outlet. I was not rude at all at any instance or even ask them any questions, i didn't even open my mouth, i was just seeing their collection, they kept constantly bothering me asking me questions and harassing me. They didn't allow me to see or think, kept harassing me asking me if I'm going to buy or just going to watch. Both male staff looked like barely 10th pass, their attitude and words matched their looks. The short one acted like one insecure ape constantly kept trying to bully me and the tall one acted like his lackey, no wonder their life is reduced to running a shi* can shop. The short humpty dumpty looking guy kept saying "avar ku lam elam theriyum da avar pathu paru periya alu" Not everyone is knowledgeable about "street" fashion, and not everyone gives a shi* either. What gives these people the right to harass customers, if this is how they treat male customers I wonder about the safety of treat lone female customers.

Outside of the shi**y attitude and pullingo behaviour of the staff, The collection is shi* and the prices are shi**ier. Much better shops in spencer and outside. Human trash are set as staff and their attitude reflects how far they'll go in their life. Waste of time.

TLDR: Ukiyo staff behave like depraved apes and the shop/collection itself is shi*.

So we’ve been getting water like this in Velachery for a few days now , I don’t know Wht the issue is but I’ve arranged a tank clean today. Any other people in Velachery facing this issue or is it just our apartment. Don’t know what I’m going to do if this prevails even after cleaning the tank. My parents are saying this is not an issue but I’m concerned as the water is clearly not clear 🥲

Any tips, suggestions, clarity on the situation?

Non-Political News muthalvar padaipagam (kondithope) has had unusable BSNL internet for 3 months despite charging ₹100/day

I'm a regular user of Muthalvar Padaippagam, Kondithope, Chennai. The workspace charges ₹100 per day, but the internet has been practically unusable for the past 3 months.

The staff keep saying it's BSNL's fault, but nothing has been fixed.

Today's Speedtest results:

Download: 0.54 Mbps

Upload: 0.28 Mbps

Ping: 46 ms

At these speeds, it's almost impossible to:

Attend online meetings

Upload assignments or projects

Use GitHub or cloud development tools

Watch educational videos

Work remotely

The disappointing part is that another Muthalvar Padaippagam learning center in Erukkencherry reportedly gets around 130 Mbps using BSNL, so clearly this isn't a problem with every center.

If this has been an ongoing issue for months, why hasn't it been escalated or resolved?

People are paying ₹100 every day expecting a functional workspace. Reliable internet should be a basic requirement.

Has anyone else experienced this at the Kondithope center? I hope the authorities or BSNL take this seriously and fix it soon.

Rant Toxic father is ruining our family financially with a doomed construction project.

I ( 27 M ) am working in London now and my parents and sisters are in Chennai and have been paying my father's 30,000 INR rent and EMI every month for the past 5 years plus house expenses.

Back in 2019, he took a 34 lakh INR loan from a private lender in Chennai for a building construction project, giving blank cheques as security. The project stalled, but he has already sunk around 40 lakhs into it. Now, in 2026, the lender has deposited those old cheques, bounced them, and sent a legal notice claiming an absurd 2.42 Crore INR debt with 24% compound interest. My dad has less than 15 days to reply to the immediate legal demand, or he faces a criminal case and potential arrest.

Despite being 64 and struggling with his health, my dad is incredibly egoistic and refuses to hire a lawyer or listen to reason. Instead, his plan is to take 85 lakhs lakhs in advance home loans from new apartment buyers to finish the building. He expects to bring in 1.5 crores total, which theoretically leaves a profit of about 25 lakhs. The huge problem is that he plans to build using this "rotational" money. If the lender uses the pending legal case to freeze his bank accounts, the new buyer funds will be trapped, construction stops, and those buyers will definitely file criminal fraud and cheating charges against him.

Whenever I try to explain this massive risk, he refuses to listen and just tells me, "don't talk negatively." When I confronted him about the legal notice recently, he aggressively snapped, "unkita yaruketa ? Nee onnum veetu selavuku kaasu anupa venam. vaida phone ah. yedho konjam paatha overa poitu iruka" and hung up on me. He drops calls often without even listening to what I have to say. My mom and sister are still attached to him and won't leave, and I feel entirely helpless watching this disaster unfold from miles away.

The guilt and stress of staying in London are eating me alive. How do I handle this guilt. IDK really :(

AskChennai Parandur Cancellation: Are We Throwing Away Tamil Nadu’s Future

Cancelling the Parandur Airport project would go down as one of the biggest strategic blunders Tamil Nadu has made in decades.

This isn’t about an airport.

It’s about the future of the state’s economy.

Every successful economy invests in infrastructure before demand peaks. Airports aren’t built for today’s passengers—they’re built for the next 50 years of growth.

Chennai Airport can be expanded, but it will always be constrained by the city around it. A greenfield airport offers something expansion never can: room to grow, space for cargo, MRO facilities, aerospace manufacturing, an aerocity, and industries that create high-value jobs.

Tamil Nadu is one of India’s manufacturing powerhouses. We have the ports, the electronics ecosystem, the automobile industry, and the skilled workforce. We should be building infrastructure that matches those strengths, not settling for temporary fixes. Our neighbouring states are thinking decades ahead. If we start abandoning long-term infrastructure projects every time politics changes, investors will simply choose states where policies are predictable.

Development requires difficult decisions. That doesn’t mean people affected by projects should be ignored—they deserve fair compensation, proper rehabilitation, and transparent engagement. But scrapping transformational infrastructure altogether is a choice that future generations may end up paying for.

Rant Would You Find This Weird?

I'm from Bengaluru, and I occasionally travel to our Chennai office for work.

Recently, two incidents made me curious.

The first was on an MTC bus. After holding one of the metal rods, I used my hand sanitizer because I have OCD and always carry one with me. A few people noticed and gave me some strange looks. From their expressions, it genuinely felt like they were wondering, "Yaar da ivan... elite puluthi?"

The second incident happened at the office. Someone offered me a sweet while I was working. I washed my hands, came back, and then took the sweet. Again, a few people looked at me as if I was doing too much.

I've never experienced this in Bengaluru, so it made me wonder is this elite behavior?

Has anyone else noticed this, or was it just my experience?

Rant Embarassing lack of FIFA World Cup screenings

My Instagram feed is filled with ads of tonight's World Cup screenings at restaurants and pubs in Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and even Kolkata. On the other hand it seems Chennai is dead to the world. Can anyone find a single event? Are places even allowed to stay open for this?! Absolutely embarrassing for a metro city!
