MOD POST Update Thread: Bates Motel

September 2nd 2020

After messaging u/blacklantern0 u/Nerdy_Xbox_Gamer was added as a Moderator of r/BatesMotel with full permissions. Nerdy requested to be a Moderator with the intentions of redesigning the subreddit, he was approved shortly after. Nerdy created and sent visuals of the redesign to Blacklantern and edited to his suggestions - shortly after the subreddit was officially redesigned.

The subreddit is now looking much better than before, and we appreciate Nerdy's contribution.

Between These Dates

Not much happened between the dates. The subreddit gained members gradually and the Mod Team were very active on the subreddit with each member being active daily on their own schedules/accords.

November 30th 2020

We have created ten new user-flairs for the members of r/BatesMotel to use and enjoy. Nine of which are created after the main characters of the show, and the tenth being a customisible flair for those members who want a specific flair. We appreciate each member and their choices of flairs.

We encourage each member to either choose one of the ready-made flairs or to make a flair themselves. Remember, the 'New Reddit' supports emojis in user flairs, 'Old Reddit' does not.

December 1st 2020

We have updated the list of 'post-flairs' by redesigning the current ones and adding a few more. This will help define and specify what each post is about, and we encourage everyone to take part and use these new flairs. Each flair has been colour coded also for convenience.

We have also adjusted the names of the members so that it now says '9.5k victims' and '65 currently killing'. This relates much more to Bates Motel and is rather appealing. We have also done some minor adustments to the bio.

Discussion Why didn't they take Norman and Normas relationship all the way?

They led up to it until the end. I think it would have added another psychological element to the show. He's already breaking down mentally and his mom is the one he cares about the most. His feelings for her are clearly beyond mother and son. It would have taken the show to another level and could have been what pushed norma to get married to Alex.

Question Spoiler … on the mini saga on Romero’s escape. Spoiler

So the kid discharges his firearm in the middle of the night where you could hear a pin drop a mile away and his parents, who are right there, somehow don’t hear a freaking bang just a few yards from their house?

That gave Romero enough time to trick the kid back into the house, put himself into limp mode, and split back into the woods? I think they really dropped the ball on that scene.

Discussion (Spoiler) Norman’s true arch nemesis: Everyone’s fists Spoiler

Just rewatching the episodes and at this point, I’m just laughing when I realize how many times Norman gets punched in the face.

Let's see, we've got:

* Bradley’s boyfriend at the prom dance.
* Dylan
* The security guard at the strip club
* The farmer
* The guys who put him in the box**
* Norma (I'm pretty sure she clocked him at least once too?)

I am certain I’m forgetting a few punches, but at this point, it's almost as much of a running joke as his blackouts. I can’t help but laugh 🤣🤣 Who else am I missing?

Added:

*Romero. (Thank you acidboth)
*Caleb. (Dylan’s dad) I forgot he beat him up at the motel too!

Discussion Season 3 episode 2 - I feel sorry for Norman

Please no spoilers for anything past the episode mentioned in the title.

I feel sorry for Norman. I feel like he could’ve had a chance at normalcy if it weren’t for the trauma he’s experienced his whole life, especially as a child. If Norma wasn’t so worried about losing him and got him help earlier (or even now) he probably would’ve never done anything he has up to this point. I get that he’s a psychopath but therapy and meds do wonders.

I noticed that after experiencing the trauma of being locked in that box for days, it seems that he has given into his ways and is almost embracing it.

I’m sure there will come a point when I don’t feel sorry for him but I will still feel sad that things could’ve been different. He really was a nice person only concerned about protecting his loved ones at first.

Discussion A question of morality.

Considering Norman murdered a lot of people under the alter of Mother, going from his own dad to Bradly martin and doctor Edwards. And considering what he did when he found out he murdered people- attempted to kill himself multiple times for harming people, self blamed that drove his conscious to blame his mom, just so he could live.

Not taking in the fact that he killed his own mom, and Alex Romero, though I could fight it was self defense since Romero did escape from jail and kidnapped him. His mom, I got no excuse for but a few options.

  • The idea of helping her.

Taking him what she told him in the finale of season 2- that if he dies, she would follow him. Now take him, who adores her and wants to protect her from dying in pain after finding him dead. Considering his character, this option makes sense, since he found out he killed again, and guilt drove him to it back in season 2 as well; Season 4 and 5 too, after understanding that his mom is dead and he is not, he almost died if not his hallucinations coming back to protect him. And in season 5, after he learned of all the evil he did, how he killed her, he made Dylan kill him- or as I like to call it, assisted suicide.

  • The idea of removing both chances of danger to the world

By season 4, Even after Norman learned of the difference between his mom and his Mother, his mind first had to accept the fact that he harmed many, not his own mom- what should have been done with detectives and doctor Edwards, and Norman under Eyes watching him- knowing that the guilt could be too much for a boy like him. All though, he was let out too early, and before his forced stay, he blamed her for the murders, told her to confess. So with his mind shifting the blame again to "mom did it" so he could live, and knowing the two version exists, he wasn't sure if his mom did it or he did it. So of course, he never wanted to hurt people, so of course he would want to eliminate what hurts people.

  • Jealousy.

The idea that he wanted her all to himself is not far off, he was in love with her, he feared it was wrong but she comforted him. There is proof in the show, after he was let free, the "who would you save" question, the anger at Romero, him watching his mom and Romero engaging in sexual activities. He was in love with her, it was clear as day. So, not having her all to himself, seeing her grow with Romero, plus his growing suicidal ideas after learning of a murder he done- that would lead him to the unfortunate murder-suicide plan.

-------------

Now back to talking about the others he harmed, under being the alter, forgetting and having zero control over his body- the guilt of them that drove him to idealize suicide multiple times, almost attempt 4 times- before the fifth one killed him.

Would you say he is to blame on those murders, or not? And if not is it because of insanity?

Question Norman’s Dr

I recently finished my first re-watch and I have a question which I apologize in advance if I somehow missed the answer to. I tend to get easily distracted

We know that Norman never actually spoke with his Dr at the cafe correct? Then the pharmacist tells Dylan later on that they can’t get the Dr to send in a refill for Norman because the Dr went missing awhile back and is presumed dead. Is it implied that Norman had something to do with this or do we just not know?

Im a bit obsessed lol. Theres some older posts pinned on profile with some more detailed pics of a couple things, please feel free to comment or dm me if youre curious about anything or wanna talk about Bates/Psycho stuff. I seperated my TV show collection for you guys, threw a couple Fairvale items in there but who cares! I also wanted to lay out all my Psycho 98 Collection since it doesnt get much love online, my whole opinion on that movie changed one day and while its still mostly pointless I have learned to love what it does different and at times prefer it to the original. Generally I tried to include what I consider my holy grails and things that you dont see often. My collection is pretty much all phsyical media and promotional material but there is so so much more out there. If you own any Psycho/Bates Motel stuff I encourage you to share pics or say what you have!

I forgot how much I loved this show and I’m bummed I’m almost at the end! I watched it like 8 years ago prior to this. Freddie is such an amazing actor and I love Norma’s style! Anyone else love Emma in the earlier seasons and less towards the end? She becomes really dry and overly serious to me. Granted I realize she gets older and people change. I don’t hate her or anything, I just find myself kind of waiting for her scenes to pass. I’m not a huge fan of her and Dylan as I don’t feel the chemistry. But that’s just me! It’s an amazing show!

Watching the show AGAIN for the 10th time. What are things that you’ve caught or noticed watching more than once?

I’ve noticed a lot of things but what has me going this time around is how aggressive Alex drives 🤣

Why Alex why?!

I'v just finished S05E08 (The Body). Thought Chick would be a single season character, but soon he became this wild card. I found it kinda fascinating the way he was handling the Norma-Norman situation at the house and his writing journey! oh man! I hoped he would atleast be able to finish the story, but nah Alex had to pop his brain cells out. I always admired Alex's love for Norma and I agree Chick was a douchbag but should have let him finish the story atleast. When that scene played out, I was like NOOOO! Btw I did watch this series a couple of years ago but for some reasons dropped it at around the starting of S5, but the whole vibe of the show and the atmosphere stuck with me ever since, so decided to rewatch it again.
