So I have seen on websites of Dallas city hall that they don't have long form birth certificates for people born before 1983, and also on Dallas county clerk website they say they don't have long form birth certificates for people born in city of Dallas So where do I get my long form birth certificate If I was born at Parkland memorial in city of Dallas in 1976? Why would both the city and the county not record their long form birth certificates before 1983?

For those of you who have rented or done a rent-to-own home in Texas, I’d love some advice. My long-term goal is to relocate to either the Fort Worth or Tyler area sometime after February 2028, and I’d really like to rent-to-own a three-bedroom house if possible.

How important is your credit score for something like this? Is there a general score that landlords or rent-to-own companies like to see? Besides credit, how much do they look at things like stable income, savings, rental history, or a larger down payment?

I’m also planning on saving up quite a bit before I move. When it comes to monthly payments, is it common to pay rent with a debit card or through a bank account, or do most places require another payment method? I’m just trying to understand what the process is typically like so I can prepare well in advance.

I’d appreciate any advice or things you wish you had known before moving to Texas :)

Edit: I really appreciate everyone’s feedback so far. I’m seeing a lot of you saying that rent-to-own is much riskier than I realized, and I’m definitely taking that into consideration. At this point, if renting is the safer and smarter option, I’m completely open to going that route instead.

The current plan would be to rent a three-bedroom house with a couple of roommates, but I’m still trying to figure out where makes the most sense. Most of my work would be around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but I also have friends in Tyler and Longview, and I have an opportunity to pick up extra work with a friend’s company in the Longview area on some weekends. I’ve also spent time around Arlington and didn’t mind it at all.

For those of you who know these areas well, what factors would you consider when deciding where to live? Would you prioritize being closer to work, or is there a location that offers a good balance between DFW and East Texas? Take it. I do drive a lot and distance has never been much of an issue for me. Texas has always called out to my soul for some reason and I wanted to know if I should move to Texas and if so, where? I’ve lived in Texas long enough to know that a broken ac during summer is not something you can just ignore. Last summer, my ac started blowing warm air in the middle of a really hot week, and I had to figure out what to do quickly before the house became unbearable.

I checked the thermostat, changed the air filter, and made sure the outside unit was running, but I still couldn’t figure out what was actually causing the issue.

For texas homeowners, what usually ends up being the real cause when your ac suddenly stops cooling during extreme heat? Have you had a similar experience where you had to deal with an emergency ac repair situation?

Are you okay with all of the newcomers moving into your state?

We live in an apartment in fort Worth, and ever since its heated up, our AC will not cool down to anything below 68. I understand that it's super hot here, but I just came from Phoenix, where even if it was 110 out, the AC was still kicking at a cool 63. I like it cold. The maintance team says there's no issue, but it's currently at 71 when I have it set at 62. Am I crazy?

We are planning a move to the area later this year and want to be within walking distance to some parks. Are there specific sections of Highland Park that have better sidewalk connectivity or less cut-through traffic?

We found a beautiful vintage property but it needs a major kitchen expansion and layout update. Does the town planning commission enforce strict historic facade protections or deed restrictions that block structural additions?

Hiii help me with something I've always wondered. Who's the most famous person in each state thats famous nowhere else- whether that be someone on billboards or an underground musician or a local legend. How do I apply for the permit when my ID is expired and in the Texas scheduler website the appoint for “apply for new drivers license/permit” seems to be greyed out in my account. Thanks a lot! Really appreciate any help/advice.

Our unincorporated community of Hockley is a suburb of Houston and in 7/2025 a permit was submitted for a proposed bulk fuel terminal to be built here. This proposed terminal is expected to be a 24/7 operation with mulitple massive above ground fuel storage tanks to store over 6 millions of gallons of fuel for pipeline to truck distribution.

This is a new "greenfield" inland terminal strategy and can find only 5 facilities of this size in all of Texas away from the Gulf Coast. This 20 acre tract for the proposed site is between a church and residential home, less than a mile (.7) from an elementary school and 1.2 miles from a new high school opening in 2028.

Hockley has had expansive growth since 2020 with at severall master planned communities with thousands new residents and still building. Ironically Jubilee is within .5 miles and marketed as Texas's first master-planned wellness community. The public is finally becoming aware of this terminal and obviously dont want it at all but specifically at this location. We were here first. The neighboring property, the church been there since the 90s and elementary school built in the 80s is right down the street.

I get growth happens, but area has grown from rural to urban multi use property and a large company able to put this here because convenient and cost effective. Yes property extremely profitable for company, less than miles to connect to main pipeline with favorable easements along the way and 1000 ft from Texas highway 290. But this is a heavy industrial facility and environmental /safety risks are being forced on us residents.

The project plans are so hard to find for public and understand voc, requirements even harder. Public comment meeting was 4/30 but no county officials, school isd admins or master community developers rep asking questions. Was just pipeline project member showing as little plans as possible and not as big risk as we think. I was told 60 18 wheelers a day estimated on my street daily but per fuel storage capacity and permits estimate 250 to 300 with only 4 refueling bays. May have 6 bays so will add more. This info not available to public.

So per what i xan find 5 others mid sized fuel terminals comparible to this one in texas are all in rural / industrial area with no schools or homes with 2 miles still years later after operating. If the terminal goes 4 to 5 miles north or west will be plenty of large acreage away from schools but more a but costly for project to build and truck to travel to highway.

If Texas does not push back on this at TCEQ level, the county says limited power to stop in our unrestricted incorporated community.

A mile radius MINIMIUM from public schools that already exist should not be granted a permit period. Especially to a company expediting the process thru TCEQ so public awareness is minimal.

I hope our voices are heard from Hockley all over Texas. Requested another public meeting since 4/30 was a joke and residents did not know. The few that did go now know more on project and telling anyone that will listen.

I completed the drivers course through Virtual Drive and took the exam online as well. The only thing left is taking the actual road test.

Is it possible to take the road test through a third party if i completed the course online through a different program? I would still have to look for a third party skills testing but was wondering if that was possible, and if I would still have to go to the DMV.

I heard that Texas k-12 “likes to hold students back” based of their test scores like 3rd,5th, or 8th grade test scores. Ofc the STARR exit exams too. Finally I’ve heard that your passing score is 70 but some districts it’s 75 but in other states it’s either 65 or 60. Since I’m not from Texas, how many of y’all Texans have been held back from k-12?

When I asked ChatGPT, it suggested some places with less hail, like Canton, Tyler, and Kaufman. Is it true that these places get less hail than Dallas?
