Hi All,

For more than a decade r/LakePlacid was a sub dedicated to the 1999 movie 'Lake Placid' about a killer crocodile.

This was confusing when 95% of the posts as of late were mainly visitors to the Lake Placid village asking questions.

Yesterday I saw that the sub no longer had any moderators attached to it. I reached out to reddit, explained the situation, and they appointed me the mod. I have gone and quickly revamped the style and dedicated it to the Lake Placid people actually want to discuss.

On my to do list is to add links to this sub and any other existing ADK subs.

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know the new r/LakePlacid is open for business to discuss the cool LP and not a killer Crocodile :)

I am hoping someone can help me with an old article, "Death on the Northville Placid Trail" that appeared in the July/August, 1993 edition of Adirondac Magazine.

Im doing a big research project on David Boomhower who went missing in the Adirondacks in June 1990 and was found that October with a journal.

I have read At The Mercy of the Mountains, but I feel like this article is the missing piece in my research and knowing it exsists but not being able to find it is haunting me. Im hoping someone has a Magazine Dad like mine, or possibly has this article saved somewhere they can share with me. I would be grateful! I have emailed the Adirondac Magazine/ADK mountain club for help, but it was a few days ago so I wanted to try my luck here.

Also have read Lost by Adam Federman which is an amazing article, if youd like info on David, or other hikers like him.

I may have done Poko a thousand times by now but it still takes my breath away

I’m taking my girlfriend on a road trip and the first night we will be sleeping in lake placid. The following day we want to get up early and do a hike before heading to Burlington for dinner and our night hotel.

We’re both in great shape and I’ve backpacked in the high peaks before (Colvin, skylight, Marcy, haystack) and know how difficult they can be.

If you could only choose one hike, what would it be?

I’m between:
- gothics via pyramid peak loop w rainbow falls
- giant mountain (maybe add RRP too)
- Algonquin + wright and Iroquois

I also want to do skylight as when I backpacked it was clouded over and I really want to see the view!

However it seems like it may be a little heavy on mileage.

If you have a preference for any of the three or suggest something else entirely please let me know!

So tonight we left a door open for about an hour to our shed with kayaks. The exterminator had glue traps in there. A chipmunk got in, got stuck and I managed to get him off it with a paint scraper. I'll never eliminate that horror show from my memory.

I managed to get him off but as I was trying to use dawn and water to unstick his limbs from his body he bit me pretty hard and I'm headed to the medical center in the morning.

GODDAMMIT. STOP USING F'ING GLUE TRAPS.

I’ve been enjoying this project, and the feedback I get from sharing! I figured not every badge needed to be an animal, so this naturally felt right being a waterfall with flowers cascading down on either side.
Hope it’s ok to be sharing my painting adventures rather than hiking adventures… for now ☺️

Hello all, I’m wondering if anyone here can give me some insight on the park around Paul Smith’s college. If I were to go on hikes in and around campus, how likely is it I’ll run into people? If I were to drive a bit away from campus and find a lake or creek could I skinny dip? Or are there often hikers and other students around? I know the park is huge but Saranac Lake and the entire student population is right there so I’m not sure what to expect. I’d think it wise to leave the VIC and immediate area but otherwise I don’t know. Ideally I’d leave on the weekend when I don’t have classes and not see anyone till I get back to school 😂

I saw there’s an event this Saturday where the runners run one lap of Van Hoevenburg every hour until only one person is standing. Last Man Standing Lake Placid

Do you think it will still be going on Sunday afternoon? Or still crowded? Was hoping to hike the trail then but would change plans if needed. Thanks!

hadn't been to the adirondacks ever before and was really surprised by how gorgeous it was! can't wait to return!!

Hello. I am staying near Essex with my girlfriend. We plan to do mostly hike but also want some relaxing lake time. Any recommended lakes close by that have maybe a nice trail, swimmable, is more secluded? No motorboats too.

I hiked to Indian Head Vista on Monday. Absolutely stellar view. I have been collecting magnets the last few years of places I've gone to, hiked, etc. I looked all over shops in Lake Placid and online for an Indian Head magnet but couldn't find one anywhere...anyone know where to get one?

I’ve never been up to the Adirondacks but was headed up next week in my 4wd van. Didn’t know if anyone had some good recs for hikes (under 15 miles)or good camping spots. Thank you!

As the title says I’m looking for a few hikes that won’t be overly strenuous but still feel worthwhile. I’m recovering from hip surgery (labrum repair + FAI correction) and I’m so unbelievably excited to get back out into nature but need to be careful as to not cause any setbacks. Would appreciate any and all recommendations!

Has anyone on here hiked the whole lake ?

As a kid, Id go to camp in the Adirondacks. Years went by, decades really, and I ended up working there for a summer in 2009. I’ve returned most years since, climbed a few high peaks, but stick to lower mountains and paddling these days.

I’ve always heard people talk about the soul of the Adirondacks, and I’ve certainly felt a pull every time I enter the park. It’s hard to describe but it’s just a feeling, maybe just some primitive response to the wilderness, but it tugs at my chest, and I feel it so deeply.

I’ve been to other wildernesses and it’s not the same for me. There’s just something about the ADK that hits differently.

How would you guys describe it? Do you feel like it’s a different feel than other wild places you’ve gone? What makes it different?

This morning, see handle for location- I took these photos myself.

My friend and I are fairly avid hikers. We’re both military, so we’re pretty active and accustomed to rucking. Never hiked the 46 before despite living in NY our entire lives.

We’re both from Albany, and our work schedules don’t allow us to spend the weekend camping and hiking. Is it a reasonable goal for two fairly fit individuals to drive the two-and-a-half hours once in a while, do a peak or two, and drive back in the same day?

We plan on doing Cascade / Porter, then driving to Big Slide for our first day. Then we’ll drive back to Albany the same day. Which seems reasonable for the easier hikes, but once we want to get into Marcy, Skylight, Seward just to name a few—the ones that are going to take a while and are quite challenging—is this a reasonable goal? Or should we be making plans to stay the night camping if we’re going to be hiking Marcy?

Obviously, if we could both take time off work and spend a week, that would be ideal. Unfortunately, I just can’t take time off work right now. We can only hike on the days we can manage to get together.

Can anyone with experience hiking those larger peaks weigh in? Will it really take 15-18 hours for some of these hikes?

Been trying to look for some good swimming holes, born and raised in tupper but we don’t have any out here. Any recommendations?

Going camping with a friend next week near Lake Saranac and think we are sadly bound for a whole lotta rain. Been reading that black flies are typically gone by mid July, and it's more deer flies in July/August. I'm a bug guy, so I do try to be prepared in a bug-specific manner.

How true has this been? Saw a post a few days ago about still lots of deer flies. Just trying to see whether I can go permethrin hat+net+long sleeve shirt and shorts, or whether I'll have to cover up head-to-toe in the rain :(
