I have this. I struggled with this for a decade, and want to make sure others know about it. Hearing that I wasn't alone saved my life, and I'm simply hoping to pay it forward. In therapy now and it's making a world of difference. I wish I'd gone 10 years sooner.

Why YSK: If you call 911 the dispatcher has to figure out exactly where you are and then contact the specific railroad company which takes precious time you might not have. Every railroad crossing has a blue Emergency Notification System sign. If you call the number on that sign and give them the specific alphanumeric Crossing ID you are speaking directly to the railroad's dispatch. They can instantly radio any trains heading toward your exact location to stop potentially saving your life and preventing a massive derailment. Always get everyone out of the car first then make the call.

Why YSK: it is common for people to "double down" when they get called out on an inaccuracy or a misunderstanding of something, but this makes them look less intelligent and people will doubt their intellectual credibility in future. Instead, if you're receptive to feedback and gracious about being called out, people will have MORE confidence in your intellectual credibility and integrity than they did before.

Why YSK: If you’ve ever been in an argument where someone responds to a valid criticism with “Well, what about [insert unrelated thing]?” you’ve run into whataboutism. It’s not a real counterargument—it’s just deflection.

Here’s the thing: whataboutism doesn’t actually address the issue at hand. Instead, it shifts the conversation to something else entirely, usually to avoid accountability or to make the original criticism seem invalid by comparison. It’s like saying, “Sure, this thing is bad, but look at that other thing over there!”

This is not the same as actual criticism. Real criticism engages directly with the issue, offering either counterpoints or additional context. Whataboutism just throws up a smokescreen and derails the conversation.

The next time someone hits you with a “what about X?” in a discussion, don’t fall for it. Call it out for what it is—a distraction. Stick to the point and keep the focus where it belongs. Don’t let this rhetorical dodge shut down meaningful conversations.

Most people were taught to be suspicious of “and me”, because it might make us sound uneducated, but this is not true. The question of whether to use “I” or “me” comes down to whether you are using the word as a subject or as an object in the sentence.

“I” is always used as a subject, while “me” is always used as an object.

• “I went to the store with Robert.”

• “Robert and I went to the store.”

In both examples “I” is the person who performed the action, which makes “I” the subject of the sentence.

• “Alice gave Ursula and me tickets to the theater.”

• “The vase is a gift from my husband and me.”

In both examples, “me" is used as an object in the sentence. “Me” is never the subject.

• A QUICK TRICK to figure out if “l” or “me” should be used is to remove the other person from the sentence and see if it still sounds correct. You wouldn’t say “The vase is a gift from I”, nor would you say “Me went to the store.”

Why YSK: This will make your writing and speech look and sound better. Sounding intelligent can open doors for people.

Why YSK: There is a trend where public agitators are getting in people’s personal space in shopping centers and post offices, yelling profanities at innocent people in hope of getting a reaction. Their whole aim is for you to touch their camera equipment so that they can pepper spray you or for the police to unlawfully arrest them, so that they can sue the police department.

I saw myself in one of their videos and filed a privacy complaint on YouTube with timestamps and within a few hours, YouTube removed my footage from their video.

As someone in the therapeutic field I’ve noticed this term has become something thrown around A LOT! And particularly by teens/college age people.

The problem is I hear it used incorrectly all the time in real life and on reddit.

Here’s what gaslighting ISN’T…

Wife: where were you?

Husband: at Tom’s house.

See, that is just lying. But I’ll hear people in these situations say, he/she gaslighted me.

Here’s an example of what gaslighting IS..

Wife: where were you?

Husband: at Tom’s house, remember I told you I was going there?

Wife: no you didn’t.

Husband: yes I did! Remember I told you and you even said to tell him hi for you. I can’t believe you don’t remember that!”

This example is assuming everything he is telling her is made up and never actually happened, but he explains it in a way that makes the person start to think that maybe that conversation did happen.

This term comes from the 1938 stage play “Gas Light”, in which a husband attempts to drive his wife crazy by dimming the lights (which were powered by gas) in their home, and then he later denies that the light changed when his wife points it out. He further continues to try and make her believe the lights are the same brightness as they always have been.

All this just to say, gaslighting is lying but lying isn’t necessarily gaslighting. Hopefully this helps you understand the difference.

Plain and simple. Doctor refuses blood work or another diagnostic test? Ask them to put in your chart that you specifically requested the test and they denied it. Most doctors will just send you for the test.

Don’t be a jerk to your physician. Do not be hostile or threatening. Ask politely for things to be documented.

If you have the resources to “shop” for a doctor, please do! Look around until you find somebody who you trust completely.

This is for actual medical problems that you are experiencing and not for curiosity’s sake. Medical testing is not something you do for fun.

If you are asking for something unreasonable your doctor will refuse and still chart it. They are still in control of your health and should not be providing potentially dangerous testing because you asked for it. This includes any sort radiology, rare, or invasive procedures.

Why YSK: With a sharp knife you don’t need to work hard to cut. You apply minimal pressure and the knife does the rest. You have full control of the blade, however, if you are using a dull knife, you are forced to apply much more pressure, and the heavier you push, the less control you have meaning when pushing hard when using a dull knife you are much more likely to lose control and stab yourself full force in the hand because you couldn’t stop the knife in time when it slipped. With a sharp knife you require very little force, and as a result have much greater control over what you are doing making cutting with a sharp knife much safer than cutting using a dull one.
