The ghost of Upton Sinclair was already furious. He expected readers to be more concerned with the workers’ plight in the novel.

Did you intend to reply to me?

At any rate, the two main themes of the Jungle being food safety and worker safety, both apply to this situation as well. I think government is more focused on targeting the point at which produce got contaminated, which makes sense…

But are they going to solve the problem of farm workers who spend ridiculous amounts of hours in the fields each day with no easy access to a toilet? Or the problem of disgusting run off from factory farms of pigs who aren’t being fined or sanctioned and what not? Probably not. You can guess why.

Oh man, that’s embarrassing. No, it was intended as a reply to the comment that Upton Sinclair’s ghost is furious about the state of our food safety.

Gotcha. It’s funny, I’ve never read the book but if anyone would ever want a summary I’d say it was about horrific work conditions in factories and such. Like why we have OSHA. And the food side of things is why we have the USDA, FDA, and CDC.

Though that’s all been defunded now so fuck us, I guess?
