Education YSK: Taylor Farms Iceberg Lettuce is sold under many different names

Why YSK, Taylor Farms sells their iceberg lettuce to many food stores using different names and you don’t need explosive diarrhea.

Yeah the branding just feels dishonest. I’m sure they bought up local produce growers, but to keep the name to make it feel local or organic just seems dishonest. This whole time I’ve been wondering where the source appears to be, and whether my produce is grown at unaffected locations or not.

That’s why, even though it’s often more expensive, I prefer buying produce from farmer’s markets or local grocery stores. You can at least talk to a person who knows where the produce was grown.

Fun fact, in several states EBT dollars are matched 1 for 2 if spent at the farmers market via “market match” programs

I got kicked off EBT since I wasn't working since I was homeless (not now) and can't get back on EBT until I find work, which has been really fucking hard because of my work history, and mental history, and yeah I'm just complaining.

hard not to be sour on these things when they could be so useful. but get denied from the people who need them because they're too destitute.

I saw a video on reddit yesterday of a woman working at a local farmers market dumping Driscolls berries into a different container and selling them as locally grown. It's so hard to trust anyone these days!

Not all farmer's markets vet their vendors or guarantee locally grown produce. You have to look up the governing body that oversees your local market.

And also shop with a brain. If the produce looks pristine and clean like it's from the store...

Every farmers market I've been to in AZ has resellers not farmers. We see those restaurant depot, US Food boxes.

I live near an affluent part of a major city and the farmers markets around here can often be 3x or 4x the price of chain grocery stores.

Like $15 for a dozen eggs, heads of lettuce for $8, $35 per lb cuts of steak. They are marketed for wealthy clientele.

An absolutely bonkers amount of farmers market stalls are stocked from costco Walmart etc. it's not conducive to how farms work. fields nature all at once but at a market stall you can't have 10,000 lbs of strawberries one week and nothing the rest of the season.

well, then youd only show up to the market the weeks your strawberries are in season. thats kinda the entire point. no one is forcing you to man a stall all season long if you have nothing to sell.

Except they are forcing that. Most farmers markets, especially anywhere near urban areas, you have to pay thousands to rent the space, and the contracts are for all season long. That's why you see a lot of value-added products being sold like cured meats, alcoholic ciders, honey, soap, fiber arts, baked goods. And produce resellers who at best are buying from farms and then marking everything up, and at worst are straight up just buying commercial produce and marking it up.

If you're in a rural area and it's more of a community organized thing, those are more likely to allow vendors to show up when they've got something to sell, but even that is often not worth the farmer's time because the volumes you can do on a rural village Sunday market are nothing compared to just selling wholesale.

unfortunately many, maybe even the majority of, farmers markets stalls are just resellers who go to costco and then lie about it being home grown

nah, they are resellers in my mind until they individually prove they are not. its so bad that some farmers markets are taking it into their own hands and verifying the local farms themselves.

The vast majority of these names are store brands. Store brands are usually a more affordable option vs. name brands. I don’t see a problem with that
