BETA READERS WANTED: Drop a Comment If You're Available!

21 Upvotes

If you are an avid reader with feedback to share, our community has writers actively seeking beta readers for their full-length novels/drafts.

If you're open to beta reading a full-length book, drop a comment below with a little about yourself: genres you enjoy, your typical turnaround time, how you like to give feedback, whatever feels relevant. Writers, feel free to browse the comments and reach out to anyone who looks like a good fit for your project.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE PROCEEDING

Before agreeing to share your manuscript with anyone, please take the following precautions seriously:

\Do not share your work with new accounts. \** If an account was created recently, that's a red flag worth noting as there has been issues with bots and scammers.

\Do your own due diligence. \** Ask questions and trust your gut before handing over your manuscript.

\Do not offer paid beta-reading services\** We discourage and prohibit paid beta-readers on here. Writers, if you pay for a beta-reading service, we are not responsible for any outcome. Please use another subreddit or service if you are looking for paid services.

The mod team is not responsible for any arrangements made between writers and beta readers. This includes theft, plagiarism, ghosting, or any other outcome. Connecting here is done entirely at your own risk.

Additionally, please do not contact mod mail regarding the tone or content of feedback you receive…we won't be able to help with that (unless it breaks our rules and sitewide rules), and it falls outside our moderation scope.

Stay safe and happy writing!

Announcement: The AI Problem.

272 Upvotes

Ne’er-do-wells of r/writingfeedback.

I am Isnoe, recently appointed Moderator.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we’ve had a significant increase in AI generated writing being posted here. We've seen a lot of comments outlining how lax we are on this subject, to which I want to stress: I don’t think you guys fully understand just how many posts I’ve removed for AI since joining the Mod Team a few weeks ago.

The team got together and discussed this, and we want to be completely transparent: We will be removing any posts that we suspect are AI.

This will be a case-by-case basis. AI generated, AI assisted (even translation), or even if you mention you had AI draw up the story idea and you wrote it. If you want to rob yourself of creativity, that’s on you.

We don’t want those posts here. Writing a story or book that is authentically your own is an achievement. It should feel like an achievement.

A sidenote for ESL writers: Do not use AI to translate your text. It will alter it in a way that gets flagged, more often than not. When someone is ESL and trying to write outside of their native language, we are a bit more understanding if these posts get flagged—but again, it is recommended that you use alternative means to translate if they are available to you.

Be warned: If you are a brand new (or relatively new) account, have never posted in this subreddit (or any writing subreddits), and your first post is prose that has multiple AI-isms—your post will most likely be removed. Better to be safe than sorry. The main counterargument we've gotten from these accounts has been: "I've always been told I write like AI." Which, to be fair... is a pretty bad argument to make.

We will not ban a user for suspected AI use unless they explicitly admit to using AI.

Three strike rule applies here until further notice. This might seem like a headache to reviewers that want instant bans for these people (which we understand), but we’re trying to be as fair as possible.

This also applies to comments (never thought I’d have to say that), but we’ve had two accounts that were essentially AI replying to everything. “Thanks for the feedback, I’m still working on learning and improving” type cadence, every comment nearly identical aside from slight changes.

Community feedback is super important for this problem.

You guys take the time out of your day to read other people’s work and provide feedback, so I’m sure you get a little irked when you think something you’ve spent time reading wasn’t written by a person.

We’ve recently updated the report function to include AI content—use it. I (personally) don’t have the time to shift through every single new post. When you guys report a post that you think is AI, it is usually the first thing we’ll review.

That being said: If you genuinely suspect the post is AI, it would help me if you provided a citation, or specific reason. Even just one reference is helpful. I would genuinely appreciate it.

Not Helpful Example: “This reads like AI.” Okay? At this point, if you are accusing someone of using AI, you gotta at least point out why you think that.

Helpful Example: “Post uses, ‘This wasn’t just fate, it was destiny’ and includes several Rule of Three.” Now I know exactly what to look for.

When you guys call this stuff out, we do notice. We might not investigate and remove instantly, but we are actively looking for this stuff right now.

For the record: We will not be using ZeroGPT, or any other variant of “AI Detector” as the final say in determining whether a text is generated or not. It is a tool we will utilize if we suspect AI is being used, but all the indicators of usual AI writing are not jumping out.

I read through everything that is reported, or suspected of AI. I check the user history and if they have off site content, I look through it. If we don’t come to the conclusion they are using AI, we might just lock the thread, and add a note to the user profile.

Again, hate to stress this, we are trying to be fair. If a writer includes AI-isms unintentionally, we want to give them a fair chance to either prove the authenticity of their writing, or give them feedback about what specifically they need to change.

Several of you have done this, particularly with ESL writers that use AI to translate. You give them feedback on how to avoid the AI-isms. Good on you.

We don’t want to start a witch hunt, but we aren’t really open to debate about the use of AI. We don’t want it here, period.

If you have any suggestions for how to deal with this problem, we are open to them. You can comment here, or you can Mod Mail us.

If you suspect someone is using AI but don’t want to leave a comment or report, again, you can Mod Mail us.

We are actively looking through the posts. The community having eyes on this helps immensely.

We will be making further announcements throughout the week. Our Mod Team is still hashing out how to deal with “rude” criticisms, looking into providing user flairs for trusted reviewers, etc-etc.

One quick point to make at the end, on a personal note: My status as Moderator does not mean you cannot disagree, or think my feedback is bogus or outright terrible. I comment often. You will not be banned, removed, or whatever for speaking your mind.

4/18/2026 Note: Some users (one in particular who loves using AI to edit) seem to have taken that above sentence as an explicit statement of: "If I admit to using AI, you can't ban me, because I'm just speaking my mind. Hypocrite."

If you admit to using AI, we will ban you. Period.

About a month ago, I had posted the opening one of my chapters to rather polarizing reception. Here is a non-sequitur excerpt from the middle of the same chapter (a chapter which I'm still working on, as I'm just that much of an underwriter).

Just in case you got tripped up by the number of named characters, Orlon is the POV character here. The excerpt opens with one of his cousins, having set off alone after a boar earlier, riding back to camp with a mysterious boy who later happens to recognize Orlon by name.

I'd appreciate your feedback on the prose and especially the dialog.

*I'm an ESL writer, and none of this is AI-assisted or translated.

10-WOMAN IN GREEN

Marla was a worm burrowing through the earth, then a golden leaf drifting from a tree. She was the ripple a bird's song left in the air, completely blended with the wilderness surrounding her.

Sitting with eyes closed, arms stretched downward and palms resting on the soil, she waited for nature to answer.

Sweat trickled down her forehead. Summer had been long this spin—the red mountain seemed to yearn for a missing winter. The outskirts of the red city were silent and empty. Just a girl in a red leather tunic, a cat, and an old woman.

Tingling spread through her fingers and lips. Swiftly she shaped a sentence in her mind and mouthed it in the ancient tongue. Nature flowed through her body, fresh sweat soaked the leather, and her headache deepened.

What was summoned grazed one of her palms—cold to the touch. Lifting her arm, she opened her eyes and found a large piece of gold resting in her hand.

A smile spread across her face, followed by a surge of pride. It only lasted a second as she caught the raised brow on Ïline's face.

Like Marla, the old witch was drenched in sweat. Her usually loose hair was tied in a low bun. Her staff dangled from her back as always, and her feet were bare over the fallen leaves.

"Is that what you asked for?" Ïline wore her usual suspicious look.

Morning had come and gone since they left. Marla was exhausted, hungry, and moody. Back in the city, Üreng would be waiting to swing through the trees with her on his back. She began to say "yes."

But Ïline was staring directly into her eyes, and Marla knew what was coming.

"Okay, no. I asked for a diamond." She muttered quickly, before her teacher could breach her thoughts.

Cat leapt into her lap, clawing her legs, tail flicking side to side. Amused and exasperated, the witch looked at her.

To Marla's surprise, no scolding followed. Instead, Ïline sat on the grass facing her—no stern expression, just an unexpected calm. Cat stopped clawing and curled up on Marla's lap.

"Kid, have I ever told you that I, just like you, wasn't born here?" Ïline twirled a twig she had picked up.

Marla glanced at her. She had always sensed the old woman stood apart from the people of the city, but the thought had never fully crossed her mind.

"Dwarves aren't all from Teggidryl. Like most races, we're scattered across the world. This furry beast on your lap and I are proof of that—we come from the eastern edge of the Väyn Woods. You might know them as the Black Woods."

Ïline paused and picked up another branch to toy with.

"My mother chose to leave our village when I was a sprout. An enchanted place—purple lagoons, white fires." Her eyes glazed over, lost somewhere in the past. After a moment, she continued.

"Don't get me wrong. I love the red city and its communal spirit. Who wouldn't?"

Marla didn't care for the sarcasm.

"Where I grew up, magic was viewed very differently. I don't remember much—memory fails with age. But I was taught to let it move around me. To use my emotions as a bridge to it. Discipline came later. In those early years, feeling was the bridge."

The witch leaned closer.

"Tesing has told you to shut your heart and mind—blah blah blah." She pulled a face in a perfect imitation of Tesing's grim expression.

"For the bond to work you need to feel—let nature flow in full. Speak the words like you mean them. Use your heart, not just your mind."

Marla lowered her gaze to the lump of gold in her palm. Ïline reached forward and lifted her chin with the twig.

Her teacher's floral scent extended through her touch.

"I know what frightens you, kid. I've been inside your head, remember?" The dwarf tapped her forehead. "I've watched you grow up within our walls, share meals, swing on the trees. I know you. And let me be absolutely clear: you are not the king."

Marla's fists tightened. Ïline had found the nerve. The elder knew exactly what had been haunting her—the fact that the same blood ran through both of them.

Her eyes welled as she met Ïline's gaze. The witch leaned in and spoke sharply.

"Stop trying so hard not to become someone you're not, and start being who you are."

She poked Marla's chest with a bony finger.

"Ouch." Marla rubbed the spot.

With sudden swiftness, Ïline sprang to her feet, clapped her hands, and sent Cat scrambling from Marla's lap.

"Wipe those tears. Let's try again." Another clap.

The sound dragged Marla back from a deep drift. She could still feel the sting of the poke.

For a brief instant she had been home. She wasn't. Only rock and darkness. No golden or crimson leaves. No summer.

Everything was damp and scorching. Her bones cracked as she stood—the tunnel had widened enough for that, at least. Salty sweat mingled with her fresh cuts. The water in her pouch was long gone; she'd been sustaining herself on condensation from the ceiling.

Her eyes had long since adjusted to the darkness, but there was little to see. She relied on her other senses—as Selinë had trained her. Her nose tracked a faint draft of cool air. Her ears caught the slightest movement.

Above all, she followed the mountain's pull.

Breathing, stretching, she brought herself back to focus. She pressed on, one hand trailing the rock, listening for whatever the void was hiding.

Then her nose met stone.

"A dead end? Really?" Her frustration echoed through the cave.

She had misread the draft. A soft kick to the wall, then she turned back. Through the irritation she tried to focus her mind, searching for any other hint.

A few steps later, the current returned, brushing the back of her neck.

Every nerve pulled taut. She spun.

Marla ran her hands across the damp rock. Found nothing. She stepped back, breathed slowly, and cleared her head.

I didn't imagine it. The draft came from somewhere.

She approached the dead end again, reaching across its full width. Rising onto her toes, fingertips stretching—an edge met them.

Her pulse surged.

"Yes!"

Gripping the ledge, she hauled herself up, muscles screaming. A sliver of light appeared at the far end of the tunnel as her head peeked over the new floor.

Marla leapt to her feet. Pain exploded at the crown of her head as she struck stone.

She collapsed.

However, her cheek didn't land on jagged rock. It landed on smooth white marble.

Around her stood the red mountain, peaks capped with snow. Sorenn, Üreng, and a small crowd—all watched as blood trickled from her lip.

It was autumn. The long hall was carpeted in fallen leaves, the sun pale and soft between clouds.

"Planning to stay down until winter, little sis?" Selinë offered his thick, hairy hand. "Up."

Marla took it, rose, and retrieved her training sword. Her backside throbbed from an afternoon of repeated landings. Selinë had bested her again.

"You're using your eyes too much. Use your gut," he nudged her shoulder.

"Ready yourself." He dropped into his stance, sword easy in his grip.

Marla did the same, calculating her next move. She turned the blade downward and struck toward his chin. Selinë parried without effort and slipped behind her in one motion. Air whistled. She ducked and swept at his legs. He caught her wooden sword mid-swing, lifted her, and flung her sideways.

Instead of landing badly, she rolled and came up reaching for his weapon. Selinë spun and tapped the back of her head with the flat of his wooden blade.

Tears sprang to her eyes.

"That would've hurt loads more with steel," he waved the wooden sword in front of her face.

Marla rubbed her skull, close to the edge of giving up. Impotence crawled through her. Yet Selinë tossed her sword back.

"Again."

Puffing air, she raised her guard.

"Hold on." Sorenn's voice rang out. "Come here, love." He gestured her over and took her by the shoulders.

"You're faster than him," he whispered. "Wear him down. And if that fails—" he leaned closer, his mustache tickling her ear, "he's got a bad right knee."

The king winked.

Marla returned to face Selinë. This time she didn't attack—she circled. Every time he swung, she moved away. Repeating it, she watched his stance begin to loosen, sweat appearing on his brow.

Pleased, she glanced toward Sorenn.

Taking advantage of her distraction, Selinë lunged.

Looking over her shoulder, Marla leapt high, landed behind him, and swung. Again, he caught the blade and tossed her on the ground.

Selinë gloated.

Marla used it. She scrambled forward and plunged into his bad knee, twisting hard.

He howled—half pain, half laughter—and went down with her.

Sorenn's laugh rang through the hall. Üreng pounded the marble with both fists.

"Uh-uhh-uhhh-uhhh!" the gorilla laughed.

Selinë grabbed her legs, pinned her, and leaned over with a palm on her head, still laughing.

"You dirty little—"

The marble darkened. Selinë’s touch vanished. Autumn dissolved. The damp returned.

Her cheek rested on rock, not marble. There wasn't a gorilla laughing, just her in the darkness.

Warmth spread from the crown of her head. Marla reached up and found a gash beneath her hair.

Dizzy, she pushed to all fours and crawled until the tunnel widened enough to stand. She moved carefully now, hands waving ahead of her, protecting herself from further damage.

The passage was growing. Her heart raced.

Could this be the way out?

She quickened her walk.

"Marla?"

Her mother's voice cut through the silence like the sharpest of rocks.

She stopped dead. Chills running in her veins.

"Marla, darling—is that really you?"

Trembling, mind blank, she turned toward the voice.

Standing in the middle of the cave was her mother in her suede green dress. Auburn hair falling over her shoulders, just as she remembered. The same golden eyes glowing at the sight of her.

Shadows retreated to the corners. A soft light bloomed where they stood.

Tears rose in Marla's eyes. "Mum?" she mouthed, stepping forward.

As she moved, the cave transformed—white stone beneath her feet, a fountain rising from nothing, her brother's laughter and tiny steps echoing all around.

Over a patch of purple flowers, her mother stood, inviting her to a hug.

"Marla, let me look at you. You've grown so much."

Short of breath, she kept walking.

Her mother was close, gleaming, looking exactly as she remembered.

But there wasn't a trace of a peachy perfume.

Marla stopped in her tracks.

That can't be right. How could she look the same?

"What's wrong, honey?" Love poured from her mother's expression.

"You're not her," Marla murmured.

A voice inside her countered: How can you be sure? So much time has passed. She's right there. Isn't hugging her once more what you most desire?

Trembling, Marla took one more step—then shook her head at the absence of her childhood's scent.

"No. My mother is dead. I know that."

"What are you saying, dear? Nobody is dead—come here. Don't you miss me?"

It wasn't love in whatever was calling her. Marla recognized something else.

Obsession.

Her own.

This wasn't her mother. But that didn't mean she couldn't say goodbye.

Meeting the illusion's eyes, she stepped back.

"Mum—you'll never know how much I've missed you. More than words can express."

She looked down at the carved oak on her chest. Faces moved through her mind: Selinë's grin, an old dwarven witch's mischievous look, a tabby cat curled against her in the mornings. And her father, all that he was.

"I still carry your last kiss." She touched her own cheek. "But it wasn't the only thing you gave me. You gifted me a life. An extraordinary one."

She smiled through the tears.

"I love you, Mum. But I have to let you go."

Her voice broke as she said it. Memories of that gifted life flashed through her mind and the knot she had been carrying—for so many spins—finally loosened.

"MARLA. COME HERE. NOW."

The king's voice exploded through the cave.

He stood where her mother had been. Face twisted. White tunic and armor soaked in blood, his long blade carrying the dark smear of old slaughter.

Nothing remained of the man she had once known. Only madness behind the green eyes.

Marla couldn't move.

"I—TOLD—YOU—TO—COME."

Shaking, she drew her sword and slashed him from shoulder to gut.

The king shattered into a cloud of mauve dust.

Coughing and gagging, Marla dropped to her knees and vomited.

A precipice lay where the visions had been. The darkness returned. No more fountains. No more white.

Gathering herself, swatting away the cloud of dust, she backed away from the edge. Above her, purple blooms hung low from the ceiling, spores drifting in the damp air.

Breathing hard, mind still reeling, she caught a glimpse of light.

To her left, an opening waited in the dark. She walked toward it slowly, careful not to fall, mindful not to strike her head again.

She didn't look back.

Marla left the cave where, moments before, her mother had stood.

Her heart had finally stopped aching.

Letter I; Part Three

If only I had asked those questions, I would have felt I had given you all the green lights not to hesitate. Or second-guess yourself. It’s funny how your dilemma about the steam iron was a euphemism about your second-guessing. Perfectly, it reflected my own dilemma: do I hold your hand or do you not like to be touched? Could I kiss your cheek, or is that too far? Do I even ask these things? To steam or not to steam.

All of this could very easily be tied to my own insecurities. My previous relationships didn’t give me much of a choice or a second to question before they acted. Many of their actions came as a surprise and were publicly provoked that I didn’t have the wits to say it was unwelcome. Your way is very new to me. I do my best to have the confidence, even if it’s faked, and courage, even if it's a drop, to move toward you.

I’ll put on every facade; I can play any part, but you melt that act until it’s just me. Never have I felt more vulnerable, more grounded than when you held me the last night we were in Dallas. You held my hand and explored my fingers. Being touched so gently and intentionally. Your way of love was so foreign and new to me. I didn’t know how to cope.

You told me before we tried to sleep that your heart was racing. While I was stuck trying to find the breath to tell you, “Mine is too”. My heart did not stop racing, even when we got so close that your breath whispered to my ear, your hair caressed my face, and my feet wrapped in yours. I always wanted to tell you that my heart was racing too, even now.

I got so used to cutting off thoughts that never served me after my previous relationships. Holding hands and cuddling were never a need, much less a want; besides, I was too shy or nervous even to reach out and try. I’m glad I did that night when we held hands and cuddled until the alarms went off. I never slept. I was living in bliss and anticipation of what would happen next.

That morning you were hard to read, and I didn’t know where we stood. Or was there anything we should do next after that? How far did you want to go? We had plans to walk the gardens, and I needed something to take my mind off of leaving. Again, another opportunity arose to kiss you that morning, but I was scared even after everything. I convinced myself it was too much, too soon, although we held each other throughout the night. So, I treated the day as any other and ended up in moments of silence about our impending flights.

You play with your hair when you're nervous or thinking. You are insanely good with direction; you really couldn’t get turned around even if a bag was over your head. You blush when I flirt with you, and it’s my favorite expression on you outside of your smile. You take the time to learn about whatever you're doing and to talk to people who are around you wherever you’re going. You are entirely kind and considerate to everyone and everything that crosses your path.

So, after however long I’ve been taking care of myself and everyone else, I grew accustomed to only letting a select few take care of me too. Dare I indulge this exposed challenge of vulnerability to you? As you said before, I can not lie to you. If you must know, you are one of the few people I fight myself tooth and nail to be taken care of by. Opening the doors, paying for everything, even ordering for me… (maybe I started the ordering part in the coffee shop as I snuck my payment to the barista and ordered your drink too, like I said, fighting myself tooth and nail).

Words cannot describe the way you had me feeling. The lock and key of it all was when I turned to look back from the onboarding line outside my gate. There you were waiting for me to board safely, your face still flushed and smiling. Already I was keeping my tears at bay from leaving and seeing your lovely grin after I kissed your cheek. As I said before, you have a way of melting away every facade I portray, and I cried. I still looked back, though just for one last glimpse (like four times before I got through the gate, you know this, of course). What you don’t know is how hard I cried when I sat down and then when we took off into the air.

This made for a very awkward conversation of explaining to the flight attendant, but I won't get into the specifics. What specifics I intend to identify are that you pulled over on the side of a four-lane, one-way road on our way to the Zoo. We saw a puppy walking on the shoulder, and we tossed omelet pieces at him to try to get him close enough. Close enough to take him away safely, but that puppy wasn’t having any of it and eventually led us back to his home.

You are a free-spirited conversationalist. That last day, I thought for a moment that maybe you preferred someone else to talk to. That I was too quiet, but I thought better in the end. Not only dreading leaving but also the nerves of it all. What if I don’t see your polite road rage, or hear your laugh after we leave? You make me laugh; hell, you made me cackle on that trip.

You didn’t seem to mind it when I quieted or looked at you a little longer than I should’ve. I know you prefer to back in rather than pull in when you park. You sing well; you sometimes hum when you think, particularly when you're sad. You like big cats for your favorite animal and not just the lions. You are unafraid to try anything, even if it means risking another bird poop incident. I was there when you had your first Tostada and when you confessed you don’t like sweet foods. You’re a good team player even if you’re losing at a scavenger hunt (my favorite animal we found was the turtle). You don’t mind good-byes or departures. You know you’ll see me again, and I’ll see you.

Letter I complete.

Hi everyone,
I recently started writing my first novel on WebNovel, and I’d really appreciate it if anyone could take a look.
I’m not looking for compliments—I genuinely want honest feedback. If something feels boring, confusing, too fast, too slow, or just doesn’t work, please tell me. I’d rather hear the truth so I can improve as a writer.
Even if you only read the first chapter, I’d love to know:
Did it grab your attention?
Was the writing easy to read?
Did the characters or world interest you?
Would you continue reading?
Here’s the link to my novel

http://wbnv.in/a/91jykc6

If you leave your thoughts in the comments on WebNovel, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read it—it means a lot.

NSFW Thoughts and critique on the first chapter of my book?

1 Upvotes

Hello all you lovely readers and writers. Firstly, I love you all. Long time lurker first time poster and I'm ready to get in the muck. I've just finished my second draft and I'm ready to start my 3rd and final draft. It's time to get some eyes on it and make sure what I'm seeing is actually there and I'm not wiggling naked in the middle of a padded cell. I tagged this as NSFW because it has a bit of nudity and foul language but don't worry this isn't erotica or sorry? Idk what you're into but thank you in advance for taking the time to read a thing I wrote. You're amazing. Okay. There it is. Down there. Are you as nervous as I am?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CHAPTER ONE
“Hey, did you find him?”
 The music found its way into her mouth, obliterating any chance of communication.
“What?” Virian yelled, almost loud enough to be audible.
 She gave him a droll look over the shoulder of the topless stripper gyrating on her lap and took her hands off the stripper’s backside just long enough to sign the question with a couple of quick gestures. He nodded.
“Where?” she motioned, tearing her eyes away from the stripper’s chest with significant effort.
Virian flopped down next to her, not too keen on missing any more of the show.
“Nobility section. He’s on his way to his usual room. Got some boys and designer champagne on the way. We’ve got about 20 minutes,” he signed, pausing just long enough to eat a grape from the lithe fingers of the dancer still wiggling in Adea’s lap.
 Adea frowned at the interaction and made a pouty face, earning a laugh and her own grape. The club pulsed with activity, full of topless women and men catering to horny and excited customers desperate for a weekend free of work and impending war. Adea worked her hands up the stripper’s body, taking time to cup and fondle where she could. Goosebumps radiated across the woman’s glitter-speckled skin, particularly once Adea’s hands got around the back of her neck.
Adea pulled her close and yelled, “You’re up, sweetheart!”
Her heavy-lidded eyes sparkled with understanding. The erotic dancer twisted in Adea’s lap, exposing her ample backside as her heels connected with the floor. She leaned up a bit, looking back expectantly at the pair. Adea and Virian grinned at one another and each slapped a butt cheek as they got up to follow the half-naked exhibitionist.
***
The club throbbed with sound, a vibrating experience even from the street. Enrico Barrayo confidently strolled up to the front door, past the line of men and women waiting for entry, eagerly anticipating the time he’d have inside. The 7-foot, 350-pound giant guarding the door radiated a fuck off sort of disposition, but it did nothing to deter Enrico’s approach or unusually good mood.
“Hello, you big, beautiful, mountain of a man!”
Enrico threw his arms out wide to emphasize further the man’s dimensions, who studied him a bit before responding.
“So, you aren’t blind, which means you definitely see the line you just skipped.”
The incredibly unimpressed bouncer scratched an old scar on his forehead.
“I do. I do. A lovely line you’ve created, certainly. I have no intention of standing in it, though! Unfortunately for you lovely, grubby people.”
The line of clubgoers offered several insults at Enrico’s back in response. The bouncer frowned. Enrico rocked up onto the toes of his expensive, black leather, single-buckled shoes.
“I was told to tell you, the prince of the West has arrived,” he whispered. Enrico flashed his best smile, porcelain and gold briefly lighting up the entrance of the dark alleyway. The bouncer nodded and typed a quick message into his PS.
 “Got it.”
The bouncer stepped to the side, opening the door behind him obediently.
 “Oh, such a gentleman,” Enrico purred at him, passing quickly, but lingering for just a second at his chest.
***
The stripper escorted Virian and Adea to the back rooms of the clubhouse. Various staff members milled back and forth: strippers, servers, cooks, and even exotic animals in cages added to the cacophony of voices against the backdrop of music. The stripper drilled into the mess of workers, unfazed by the buzz of activity around her. She held Adea’s hand lightly but securely, and Virian followed closely behind Adea’s back, his eyes scanning the layout and various details of their route. Eventually, the maze found its conclusion in the locker room for the erotic dancers. The door closed heavily behind the trio’s advance as two women sharing a Simrette looked up to take in the intruders.
 “Oh, look at the new girl! Already bringing customers to the back! Let us get out of your hair, girl!”
The two very high dancers grabbed what little they had and made kissy faces at Virian and Adea as they passed.
“Two at a time, too! Make sure you charge them for every minute, sweetheart. I’ll make sure to put a scrunchy on the door for you!”
Their stripper smiled, motioned a thank you with her hands and, once they were gone, reached into her locker to grab a black duffel bag. She handed it to Adea, who began emptying it there. She handed Virian his Black Tac pistol and Tac Knife, as well as an ear comm. As for her, she holstered her twin pistols, pushed the comm into her ear, and applied a singular eye contact to her left eye. Two syringes full of an ominous, transparent liquid sat quietly at the bottom of the bag. Adea grabbed them both and handed them to Virian.
 “Bonnie, you’re amazing. I love doing ops with you,” Adea said, standing up from her crouched position over the now-empty bag.
“Yeah, thanks again for helping. You gonna be okay to get out of here?” Virian asked, situating his ammo on his mag belt. Bonnie looked at the two of them, amused.
“I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. Take the stairs back there and be careful. If you guys need any help, PS me. I’ll be in system for another day or two,” she motioned, her hands signing elegantly before resting on a shoulder each as she leaned in to give them both a kiss on the cheek.
“Got it,” Adea responded. The two watched her sashay her way out.
“Is there anything better than watching her walk out of a room?” Adea asked. Virian slid a mag into his pistol.
“Landing a near-million-dollar contract?” he asked, wiggling his eyebrows at her. She grinned.
“Let’s go find out.”
***
 “Mr. Barrayo, let me be the first to say welcome. We apologize for the lackluster reception; we were not expecting you to show up without your usual escort. There have been a number of issues requiring Mr. Valentine’s attention since the Armadas took your father from us. We would like to offer our condolences and assure you we stand with the Barrayo family.” The manservant held a bucket of ice filled with three gold-tipped bottles, in line with the gold theme of the room. Enrico frowned at the mention of his father.
“I appreciate your kind words, but if it’s all the same to you, I’d like to keep this evening light with a bit of sexual debauchery and mind-altering drugs, if that’s okay with you.”
His bathrobe flapped about him as he applied lotion to his legs. The escort nodded curtly.
“Of course. The company you requested is 5 minutes out. I’ll place the specialty champagne you ordered here on the table.”
Enrico clapped with over-exaggerated glee as the escort opened a bottle and poured the drug-laden champagne into a gold-stemmed wine glass.
“Looks like Valentine doesn’t know the difference between champagne and wine glasses. Guess we all can’t be high-class snobs, huh?”
The servant cleared his throat in discomfort.
 “What do you think of Valentine? Is he a good employer?”
Enrico grabbed the glass and took a sip, his eyes locked on the servant’s.
 “Yes, sir.”
Enrico scanned his face diligently, letting an awkward silence form in the meantime.
“Working for the Valentine family in the middle of a system like ours... well, that’s got to be stressful. How do you manage it?”
The servant shifted uncomfortably under the noble’s stare.
 “I just take it day by day, sir.”
Enrico lingered a moment, sizing the servant up.
 “Free man or contractor?”
The servant bristled.
 “Contractor. Sir.”
 “How much longer do you have?”
 “3 years.”
Enrico processed his answer as he crossed the room to get more lotion for his arms. A knock at the door startled the servant and spurred him into action.
 “That should be your guests, sir.”
The servant opened the door, and two men entered the room. The servant opportunistically bowed out as gracefully as he could. Enrico had to suppress the urge to grimace at the very poor appearance of the two call boys. Both stood over 6 feet tall with full sets of facial hair and shoddily applied makeup. One of them had decided that a blonde wig complemented his outfit, and he couldn’t have been more wrong. Their clothes were small and too tight, and while the physiques under them were impressive, they weren’t winning any pageants anytime soon.
 “You guys were the best they had? Dimè really is on the decline. Never you worry your misshapen faces, though. Enrico Barrayo has bedded uglier creatures than you! Those bottles over there are gonna turn you into princes worthy of Barrayo cock in no time!”
Suddenly, the floor became the ceiling and the ceiling became the floor. As Enrico pondered just how that occurred, a hideous face hovered above.
“We’re not here to fuck you, pretty boy, at least not in the way you’d like. Urian Armada says hi.”
***
Virian double checked the magazine in his pistol and the two extra on his belt. He looked over at Adea and watched her situate her own pistols. She looked up and met his eyes.
“Ready?” he signed with his right hand. She nodded and mouthed a countdown from three. At two, Virian’s hand grabbed the door handle. At one, he swung open the door and ran left into the room, his pistol up and scanning the interior with him. He knew Adea was just behind him, moving right to orbit the two men standing over Enrico Barrayo. He focused on his job, clearing the rest of the room, which consisted only of a bathroom and a small closet, harboring no threats.
“What the fuck?”
The mercs spun around at the sudden activity behind them, eyes wide at the prospect of being shot.
 “Hey! Hey! How about we watch our fucking mouths, huh? You’re in the presence of a fucking lady, fucking nobility!”
Adea’s brows furrowed with feigned indignance.
 The mercenaries alternated glances between the two of them, no doubt weighing their chances. The mercenary with the blonde wig decided on the diplomatic approach.
“Hey, we got here first. He’s ours.”
Virian smiled.
 “Oh, don’t you worry, doll, we aren’t here to poach your commission. We were hired by the beautiful Lady Barrayo you were just giving a hard time to. Ain’t that right, Rico?!”
Enrico lay behind the two thugs, face down on the floor, doing his best to be invisible. A gargantuan task since the pain of his broken ribs, nose, and the swelling from being choked was all making it very hard to maintain silence. Nonetheless, Enrico Barrayo was a nosy bitch and had been paying attention to every word said since the door had burst open and, upon hearing his name, fought to clear his oxygen-deprived brain enough to respond as elegantly as possible.
“I did?” he groaned elegantly.
Adea mirrored Virian’s smile at the sound of Enrico’s voice.
“That’s right, you did, princess. For a tidy sum of money at that. How much was it again?” she asked, pistols still aimed at the cross-dressing duo. Enrico winced at the fleecing he was about to receive, but he was in no position to negotiate, and he knew it. He figured if he was going to be fucked, though, he might as well try to get something out of it.
“Four hundred thousand credits, and safe escorting to an associate of mine?”
He wasn’t aware of what the typical rates for mercenary work were. Adea looked at Virian, mouthing “wow”, and Virian whistled.
“They must have really done a number on you. I seem to remember seven hundred thousand up front and safe escorting, but maybe it’s the disgusting perfume these guys are wearing that’s messing with my memory. What say you, Barrayo?”
Enrico huffed indignantly and immediately regretted it as pain blazed from his lungs to his face.
“They do smell gross,” he offered lamely.
“And?” Adea asked expectantly.
He surrendered.
“And that seems to be the deal I remember, too. Can we kill these guys now and go? My face hurts.”
“Hear that, boys? Time to wrap things--“
“And my ribs.”
Adea rolled her eyes at the interruption. Virian chimed in.
 “Let’s go, get on your bellies--“
 “And my wallet.”
“We get it,” Virian snapped.
“Get on your bellies and put your hands--“
 “And my pride.”
 “Shut up!” Adea and Virian yelled in unison.
 “Get on your faces now!”
Virian dropped to a knee and pulled out one syringe. The duo attempted to look up at what was happening, but quickly abandoned their interest when Adea stomped on the hand of the brunette. His pain didn’t last long, however, as Virian introduced the contents of the syringe into his bloodstream. The blond henchman looked over just in time to see his colleague lose consciousness.
“Oh no, oh fuck. We’re going to find you, and we’re going to kill—”
Virian pulled the second syringe out of his arm and slung it across the room. With the goons down, Virian and Adea holstered their weapons. Enrico, sensing he was out of danger, did his best to sit up. Adea grabbed him under one arm, Virian grabbed him under the other, and together they pulled him up to his full height. Enrico righted himself and used the sleeve of his bathrobe to soak up some of the blood from his nose.
“So, would either of you like a drink?”
Feedback Wanted Does my chapter opening have good tension?
1 Upvotes
This is the beginning of chapter 40 of my psychological historical romance. For context, this story is a love triangle, but the duke is the villainous male lead. She had just finished playing the violin for him---she has to regularly perform for him (due to circumstances), but the duke doesn't want her to go so fast, so he has a meal prepared for her and is basically forcing her to sit and eat before she leaves.
--
EXCERPT
An uncomfortable silence stretched in the parlor, seconds passing like agonizing minutes. Sweat dampened Deborah’s hands. The violin case handle slipped by a centimeter before she tightened her grip, her nails digging so deep into her palms she thought they would bleed. But the pressure remained. She darted her eyes toward the silver tray and stared at her trembling reflection on the shiny, curved surface. Then, slowly, she lifted her gaze to Markus.
But his eyes were already on her.
Deborah quickly lowered her lashes, her stomach churning into tight knots. As though it were instinct, she knew that testing Markus’s patience further would not be wise. He had prepared a meal for her, and it seemed that he was determined to have her eat it. If she refused him again, it may lead to something… unfavorable. She could feel it in her bones. The best thing she could do was to eat quickly and then leave. But all the anxiety coursing through her body had settled like heavy bricks of lead in her gut… which meant she couldn’t quite stomach anything right now.
Biting the inside of her cheek, she stiffly lowered herself onto the settee and set the violin case on the large carpet with a muted thud
She hated being controlled. It suffocated her to no end.
Deborah wordlessly leaned forward, reaching the silver lid atop the tray, and lifted it. She froze, her lips parting slightly. Beneath the cover sat an elegant but small arrangement of two sandwiches, cut into triangles. Crispy lettuce poked from between the slices of bread, along with glistening tomato halves, and fragrant thin slivers of ham. The blue tea on the side completed the meal.
For a moment, she just looked at it. But then familiarity wrote itself on her face. She was reminded of the sandwiches Jonah had bought her a few days ago… the only difference being that this presentation was far superior. Yet, with Markus staring at her so intently, it was difficult to be pleased with the look. A chill went down her spine. A stark contrast to the warmth Jonah exuded whenever she was with him.
How did he know she liked sandwiches? She blinked skeptically. Was it pure coincidence or—
“Eat,” Markus said, still lazily leaning against his knuckles, watching her as if she were some kind of entertainment. “Once you’ve finished all of it, you may be dismissed. It’s a simple enough arrangement, wouldn’t you agree?”
A sharp retort curled on Deborah’s tongue, but she bit her cheek until the taste of iron engulfed her mouth. She was already in enough trouble. It wouldn’t be smart to add to it. Her eyes darted to the large grandfather clock hanging high on the fireplace. It was already a quarter past five.
She was wasting time.
If she was to leave before the sun began setting, she needed to eat now. Hesitantly, she reached for a triangle and lifted it to her lips. With a slouch, she chewed slowly, in an almost mechanical way; but then, the pleasant taste finally reached her, making her go still. Her stomach remained tight, but she continued, just thankful to Jesus that at least it didn’t taste nasty.
The tension in Markus’s fingers relaxed at the sight of her finally eating. Good, he thought calmly, lifting his warm teacup. That’s more like it. Her submission took far longer than he’d have liked, but this was a process after all. He only needed to continue being patient.
 She was clearly upset about this added condition of sitting through a small meal, but her disagreeability did not concern him. She’d get over it. This was simply a process she must go through if he was to get her to be more open to him—warm to him.
Feedback Wanted How can i improve the description in this passage?
0 Upvotes
"They’re unloading," shouted a kitchen boy, his voice cracking at the last syllable in anxiety. The throng collapsed into prayers to Mother Asherah, the world spirit. Waving around clay rosaries as if that would change anything. Veris spat.
He rubbed the metal-studded collar around his neck and wondered what kind of mother would allow their children to be shackled.
Veris climbed onto the table, angling his head to see through the press of people and out the window. In the yard strode a formation of enforcers, muskets tightly gripped in hand. Their grey uniforms were trimmed with bits of silver that gleamed in the sunlight. Perhaps that was the reason for their bloated egos? Like a rimbird that found a shiny rock. He scuffed.
The enforcers broke formation to encircle the carriage parked at the manor's gates. Hooked to the front of the carriage was a golem. The odd contraption was something new the archaeologist had dug up from the old world. Vaguely horse-like and completely made of metal. The thing puffed out a trail of stream that lingered in the air for too long. The doors of the carriage slid out, and a ramp spilled out into the grass.
“Come out,” shouted a female enforcer. A line of people chained together at the neck shambled out.
Cries of dismay rose from around him. Whatever hope that flickered in his chest died. They were just like the tales said. The chained men and women looked as if they were carved from marble. Skin as white as snow. Hair as pale as bone. Eyes the color of blood.
Veris noted that even through their coarse wool tunics, their muscles were prominent. Mountaineer warriors, one of the last strongholds against the empire. Captured with their heads bowed. The crowd backed away from the window as if the sight burned them.
Feedback Wanted The Caged Crown - Chapter One: The Parliamentary Election
1 Upvotes
Elenora inspected her desk that stood beside three large windows overlooking the royal garden.
Compared to the Royal Council, this was much brighter and less isolating. She would convene with what Lucio called ‘’Crown Commissioners’’ with regards to decrees and other state affairs. But this was where she would be doing most of her work.
There was a telephone with no buttons. An operator would receive the Queen and transmit a signal to either the Captain of the Royal Guard, the Chief of the Midorian National Police, or the prime minister. The button was for the Lord Chamberlain and worked like a speaker when pressed.
A knock came from the door, a good walk away from her desk.
‘’Enter.’’ Elenora said.
Two royal guards opened the door. In came her chief butler, George. He bowed.
‘’Your Majesty, the Lord Chamberlain has arrived.’’
‘’Bring him in.’’
A man in his early fifties with more grey hair than he had five years ago stepped in. His steps reverberated like they meant something. His uniform was perfectly ironed. His warm smile oozed respect and comfort. Dear old Lucio was still the same.
‘’Your Majesty.’’
‘’Lord Chamberlain.’’
He stepped in front of her desk and fished out some papers.
‘’As requested, I would like to share the opinion polls with you about the upcoming election in two days.’’
‘’I don’t remember asking for that.’’ Elenora leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand.
‘’Nonetheless, I feel it’s my sworn duty as your confidante to share this information with you. His late Majesty would’ve had my head if he knew about it.’’
‘’I’m sure he knew at the end and simply let you do it because of our long history.’’
‘’As a long-standing serviceman of the crown, I’d call myself lucky.’’
He placed the papers on the table.
‘’Leftism is indeed on the rise, Your Majesty.’’
‘’Meaning?’’
‘’A party called the Midorian Worker’s Party is gaining traction. Actually, they’ve done so for a few years now.’’
‘’A worker’s party? Are they… communists, by any chance?’’
‘’They call themselves social democrats, although sources claim that this is merely a trick to give the authorities a false sense of security.’’
Socialism… democracy… both in one? Elenora asked herself.
‘’The prime minister’s got some competition, that’s for sure.’’
‘’What was his name again?’’
‘’Charles Ditiano, leader of the Midorian National Congress, a national conservative party, ma’am.’’
Nationalism and conservatism in one too? Is there a limit for all these mixtures?
‘’Okay, so… what’s their goal?’’ Elenora said.
‘’Which one?’’
‘’The worker’s party. The so-called social democrats.’’
‘’In their view, they want to establish a more egalitarian society, with worker protection laws, and better pensions.’’
‘’What does egalitarian mean?’’
‘’It means equality of treatment under the law, meaning a society in which everyone enjoys the same fundamental rights, such as a fair trial.’’
‘’Don’t we already have that in Midoria?’’
‘’Sometimes, yes, although the richer your status and economic prospects are, the less likely you are to receive the death penalty for murder.’’
‘’How does wealth factor into this?’’
‘’Good lawyers and less reliable judges can be bought with the right money.’’
‘’That doesn’t sound fair…’’
Lucio smiled. ‘’Careful now, Your Majesty. People might think of you as a progressive queen.’’
Elenora sighed and smiled back. ‘’And what’s a progressive?’’
‘’You’ll know in time, when the election is over.’’
He folded the papers together.
‘’Are you aware of your royal prerogative?’’
‘’Which one?’’
‘’Appointing the prime minister. Midoria’s one of the last monarchies where that power rests in the hands of the monarch.’’
‘’I’ll have to pick the winner, don’t I?’’
‘’Not necessarily. It’s become custom in recent years, yes, but for some time, leaders with fewer votes became prime ministers. His Majesty King Alfred held on to the National Congress for a while before he had to give the reigns over to the Democratic Liberals.’’
Elenora had assumed she heard about them in a nightmare once. It seemed like they were a serious political party after all.
‘’What if I picked the National Congress over the Worker’s Party, despite the latter having more votes?’’
‘’It is within your right to deem the one best suited for office, as is your right to dismiss the ones less so.’’
‘’And if a majority voted for someone who may not be suitable, what then?’’
‘’That’s the curse with every democracy. Because a majority decides to put a law into practice, does that make it wise or just?’’
‘’I don’t think so…’’
Lucio grinned. ‘’And if a majority voted to abolish the monarchy?’’
‘’Then they’ve completely lost their minds.’’
‘’A monarch is above the rabble and generic, common folk. Every king rules with their kingdom’s past, present, and future in mind.’’
‘’What about queens?’’
‘’That’s up to you to decide.’’ Lucio said. ‘’One final thing, ma’am.’’
‘’Yes?’’
‘’It’s also become custom in recent years that the king or queen presides in the Chamber of Delegates every once in a while. Usually, it’s in the midst of a decision that requires the monarch’s attention. For more ceremonial purposes, the monarch is there to open parliament and wish good luck to any one of its members and ministers.’’
‘’And I will be doing that in two days?’’
‘’Rather three, I would say. The prime minister needs time to gather his government before any congratulation comes about.’’
‘’That makes sense.’’
‘’With that, I will take my leave.’’ He rose and bowed. ‘’Your Majesty.’’
‘’Have a nice day, Lucio.’’
He departed for the doors, and Elenora gazed at the windows. Beyond the royal garden was the capital city beneath. Soon, the streets would flood with red banners and demand more rights.
The water was indeed rising, with no signs of stopping.
Feedback on my epic fantasy novel - The 13th Moon
2 Upvotes
I'd love to hear your honest first impressions of the opening chapters of my completed epic fantasy novel, The 13th Moon (about 2,200 words).
I'm not looking for line edits at this stage—just your natural reactions as a reader. Any honest feedback, positive or negative, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read it.
Chapter 1 - Sara
The package sat between them like an omen.
Will gripped the steering wheel with both hands, his attention fixed on the road as countryside blurred past beyond the windows. He was trying to appear calm, but the muscle working in his jaw gave him away.
Sara drew her knees up against the seat and glanced again at the leather-wrapped bundle resting beside the console.
“What was that?” she asked finally.
Will’s eyes stayed forward. “I don’t know.”
“He knew your name.”
“I know.”
“That’s not normal.”
His grip shifted slightly on the wheel. “I’m aware.”
Sara looked back at the package. “You don’t find this even slightly concerning?”
“Of course I do.”
“Then why did you take it?”
Will exhaled softly before answering. “I can't explain it, but when he handed it to me, it felt like he already knew me."
Sara let out a short disbelieving breath. “That’s your reasoning?”
He glanced at her. “You didn’t feel it?”
She opened her mouth to answer, then stopped. Her attention drifted back to the package despite herself. The thing seemed to pull at her focus every time she looked away.
Will rubbed absently at the chain around his neck before unclasping it. The amulet settled into his palm, warm against his skin.
“This thing’s been irritating me all morning,” he muttered. He stared at it, unsettled by the heat lingering in the metal, then slipped it into the inside pocket of his bag.
Sara folded her arms. “This could be anything. Drugs. Money. Something illegal.”
“Or something important.”
“Or something that gets us arrested.”
A faint smile touched his mouth before disappearing again. “The old man told us not to open it,” he said.
“That just makes me want to open it more.”
“I know.”
Her fingers moved toward the leather cord.
“Don’t.” Will caught her wrist gently but firmly. “He said he’d find us.”
“So what? We’re just supposed to spend the rest of our gap year driving around Europe carrying some mystery package while we wait for him to magically reappear?”
Will glanced into the rear-view mirror before answering. “Until we know what this is, I'd rather trust him than ignore him.”
She stared at him for a second before shaking her head. “You’re unbelievable.”
“I’ve been told that.”
Despite herself, she smiled faintly.
It didn’t last.
By the time they reached their hotel, the sky had flattened into dull grey. Sara found herself glancing back through the window as Will parked, unsettled by the strange feeling that she had been here before. Which was impossible. This was her first time travelling overseas.
Will killed the engine and reached for the package. “Go upstairs,” he said, handing it to her. “Start packing.”
“You’re not coming?”
“I’ll check us out.”
Sara hesitated, glancing toward the hotel entrance where tourists drifted in and out beneath the awning. “You sure we shouldn’t stay? He said he’d meet us.”
Will opened the door. “He said he’d find us.”
Before she could answer, he leaned across and kissed the top of her head. Then he was gone.
Sara watched him disappear into the lobby before looking down at the package in her hands. It was warm. She shook it, but it didn’t rattle. Just a dull weight.
The lift ride up seemed strangely long. By the time the doors opened, a faint unease had begun to creep in. The corridor beyond stretched out silent and empty. Sara stepped out quickly, her grip tightening around the package as she headed toward the room. At the door she fumbled the keycard on the first attempt, swore under her breath, then shoved inside and locked it behind her, chain and deadbolt. Only then did she breathe properly.
She placed the package carefully on the bed and stared at it. “Don’t open it.” The old man’s warning returned with uncomfortable clarity. Sara turned away, dragging her suitcase onto the bed and began to pack. Clothes disappeared into bags without folding, her movements quick and distracted.
Something hit the floor behind her.
She froze. The package lay beside the bed.
Slowly, Sara turned toward the door. Still locked. The room felt unnaturally still. She crouched beside it carefully. The leather cord had loosened, the flap sitting partially open.
Sara swallowed. “Don’t open it.” Her hand moved anyway. The leather felt worn smooth beneath her fingers as she pulled the flap back fully. A book rested inside. Old. Heavy. Bound in dark leather. She lifted it carefully onto the bed, brushing her thumb across the cover—and stopped.
A gold symbol gleamed beneath the light. Her breath caught. “No way…”
It was identical to the symbol on Will’s amulet. A hexagon. A circle. Intersecting lines. Sara stared at it for a long moment before trying the cover. Locked. Of course it was.
She turned slowly toward Will’s bag.
“No,” she whispered. Then—“Yes.”
She crossed the room quickly and dropped beside his luggage, digging through it until her fingers closed around cold metal. She pulled the amulet free and stared at it for a second before looking back at the book waiting on the bed.
“This is insane…” But she was already moving.
The amulet settled perfectly into the indentation on the cover. Like it belonged there. Sara twisted it carefully. Click. The sound echoed through the room.
The book pulsed beneath her hand. Sara jerked back. “What the hell—”
The air shifted around her. For a moment she simply stared at the book, her pulse hammering hard against her ribs.
Then slowly, carefully, she reached for the cover again.
And opened it.
Chapter 2 - Will
The lift doors slid shut with a soft thud.
Will leaned back against the rail, exhaling slowly as he tried to shake the unease that had followed him from the street below. The old man, the package—something about it still sat wrong in his chest, refusing to leave him alone no matter how much he told himself it didn’t matter.
“Get a grip,” he muttered, dragging a hand through his hair as the lift hummed into motion.
At first the change was subtle, little more than a faint chill brushing against his skin, easy enough to ignore, but within seconds the cold deepened sharply through the lift until goosebumps rose along his arms and his breath fogged faintly in front of him.
Will frowned. “What the hell?”
The lights flickered violently. The floor shifted beneath him hard enough to throw him against the rail as the steady mechanical hum distorted into something heavier and uneven, like metal dragging through stone. Darkness swallowed the lift entirely. For one disorienting second the world seemed to compress inward around him, reality folding tightly into itself before suddenly releasing again.
The doors chimed. Light flooded in. Will blinked hard as the world snapped back into focus. Except the lift was gone.
He didn’t move at first. Silence pressed in from every direction, complete and unnatural, stripped of machinery, voices, traffic—anything familiar enough to anchor him. When he finally stepped forward, uneven stone met the soles of his boots and cold air carried the faint scent of oil and dust, like a place sealed away for years.
“This isn’t possible.” His voice echoed softly through the corridor. That made it worse.
Paintings lined the walls beside him in heavy gold frames, each depicting the same man in different poses and ages, the same raised scar running down the left side of his face.
Will stared at them uneasily before turning sharply toward where the lift should have been. He grabbed the tapestry hanging behind him and yanked it aside.
Stone wall. No doors. No lift. Nothing. A laugh threatened to escape before dying in his throat.
"Okay... this has to be some kind of trick.”
His gaze dropped suddenly to his clothes. Dark fabric layered heavily across his body, rough and structured beneath his hands. Not jeans and not his jacket. Instead, a tunic and laced trousers. He turned the sleeve over in his hands.
“These are not my clothes.”
His hand moved instinctively to his neck. The amulet rested there against his skin. Will frowned. He could remember taking it off in the car and slipping it into his bag. The memory remained perfectly clear, yet the weight against his chest was solid and unmistakably real beneath his fingers. He simply stood there staring at it, unsettled by how little sense that made.
Then his awareness shifted elsewhere, to the sword strapped across his back. Slowly, Will reached over his shoulder and drew the blade free. Steel slid cleanly from the scabbard in one smooth practiced motion that tightened something low in his chest. Dark metal caught the corridor light with a faint blue-black sheen while subtle markings ran along the fuller, almost invisible unless the light struck them directly. A deep emerald sat worked into the hilt and near the guard, worked into the metal beneath years of use —A.Z.
His grip adjusted naturally around the worn leather binding. Balanced. Certain. Like the sword already belonged in his hand. Will stared at it uneasily. “I don’t know how to use a sword,” he said under his breath.
But even as the words left him, he knew they weren’t entirely true. Something beneath conscious thought had already begun responding to this place. His stance adjusted slightly without instruction, weight settling instinctively into balance as awareness sharpened around him in ways he couldn’t explain.
Then voices echoed faintly below. Will looked toward the windows lining the corridor. The Danube stretched beyond them—but not the Danube he knew. No bridges, no modern skyline, only farmland, forest, and thin trails of smoke disappearing into grey skies. “No…”
The voices rose again, sharper now, arguing somewhere below him. He shouldn’t have understood the language, yet somehow the meaning arrived before the words themselves, clear and immediate inside his mind.
Will backed instinctively into the shadows, his breathing slowing automatically as his grip tightened around the sword. The reaction felt less like panic than training, controlled in a way that unsettled him far more deeply.
At the far end of the corridor, heavy timber doors reinforced with iron stood closed, the only barrier between him and whatever was coming. He moved toward them carefully, every step quiet on the stone floor.
The voices were close now, too close.
Will pressed his ear against the timber doors. Only silence waited on the other side. He reached for the heavy iron bar holding the doors shut and lifted—
The sword slipped from his hand. Steel struck stone with a sharp metallic crack that echoed violently through the corridor. Will swore under his breath. Below him, the voices stopped instantly. Movement came fast. Ascending.
Will snatched the sword back up and shoved through the doors just as shouting erupted beneath him. He slammed them shut behind him and dropped the iron bar back into place with a heavy thud.
Darkness swallowed the room. For several seconds, he stayed completely still, listening to the silence while his pulse hammered hard against his ribs. Nothing followed. Gradually shapes emerged through the dark—shelves, furniture, towering rows disappearing into shadow. A library.
Will moved carefully through the room until he reached the heavy curtains near the far side. He pulled one aside slightly, allowing a thin blade of daylight to spill across the space. Dust drifted through the beam of light. And there, resting on the desk beneath it—
A book. Leather-bound. Ancient. Familiar.
Will stepped toward it before fully realising he’d moved.  The gold symbol on the cover caught the light. “No way…”  A hexagon. A circle. Intersecting lines. The same symbol as the amulet. He lifted the book carefully.
Then movement shifted near the window. Will turned instantly. A man stepped from the shadows, huge, broad-shouldered, scarred. The same face from the paintings. Recognition struck before logic could stop it—not memory exactly, but something deeper and older that caught him off guard.
The man studied him before a slow smile spread across his face. “You.”
Will shook his head. “No. You’ve got the wrong—”
“Not this time.” The words struck harder than they should have.
Something flashed violently through Will’s mind—Steel. Fire. Rain. Voices. Gone almost instantly. He staggered slightly as the man’s smile deepened.
“I don’t even know who you are.”
The attack came without warning. The man moved with terrifying speed, his blade crashing toward him. Will reacted instinctively. Steel collided hard enough to jar through his arms, but his footing adjusted automatically, balanced and controlled as he absorbed the force and redirected it cleanly aside.
The man stepped back slowly now, studying him differently. “Better,” he said.
Will tightened his grip on the sword, unsettled by how natural it already felt in his hands. “I don’t even know how I’m doing this.”
The man attacked again. This time Will moved before conscious thought could catch up. Everything aligned at once—distance, timing, balance—as his body slipped cleanly inside the arc of the strike with terrifying familiarity.
The opening appeared instinctively before him. He took it. And drove the blade into the man’s chest.
For a moment neither of them moved. The man looked down at the sword buried in him before lifting his gaze back to Will. “Ashur,” he said quietly.
The name struck somewhere deep beneath thought, something ancient answering the name before he could stop it.
The man let out a faint breathless laugh. “Took you long enough.” Then his strength gave way. His body collapsed heavily to the floor.
The library fell quiet once more. Will stared down at the body, breathing unevenly as the reality of what had just happened slowly caught up with him. He stared at the wound, at the precision of the strike, at the certainty behind it. He had known exactly where to strike.
“No…” he whispered, but the denial already felt weak. Beneath the fear and confusion was familiarity. And that frightened him far more than the killing itself.
Feedback Wanted Need Honest Feedback for my updated blurbs.
0 Upvotes
Hi everyone, these are my six blurbs that I spent days rewriting. They should all be good, but if they need small tweaks or revisions please let me know.
The Inheritance
When a mysterious buyer offers to purchase Tim Faun’s inheritance—a $50 million mansion—he eagerly agrees.
But the buyer tricks Tim into unleashing a vengeful curse.
He tells Tim something about finding four stones, and then he’s gone, snatched away by some shadowy monster before he can explain himself further.
Trapped inside, fleeing ghosts and monsters, all Tim knows for certain is that only a person with the surname of Faun can end the curse.
Or take its place…
His sister is on her way to the mansion, unaware of the horrors he’s unleashed.
Souls of Fire and Shadow. (sequel to the inheritance so back blurb doesn't matter as much as the first book)
If only Tim knew how deep the secrets of his inheritance really went.
His old allies are gone, and new enemies have taken their place. The monsters from the mansion have fled below, and many are stronger than ever.
As he ventures deeper into the Underground, he finds evidence of an ancient, forgotten race who once walked on Earth with souls of fire and shadow.
The fate of the world hangs in the balance as an old civil war is rekindled. And even with a magical sword, Tim is unsure he’ll be able to stop the darkness this time.
To Become Human
Alana is one of the Benevolent Aliens, an empathic galaxy-wide race who have turned every planet within their empire into a peaceful utopia, except for one: Earth.
The Council warns that the world is doomed by its own technology and violence. It’s not that they don't want to save it, but the mere sight of violence easily kills any Benevolent Alien. But Alana remains determined.
Out of trillions of candidates, she succeeds in adapting to Earth's culture and starting her mission to change its fate. And that's only because she desperately wants to become human, whereas most reject the idea with revulsion.
She soon learns that not everything she read in those books about Earth was accurate. And to make matters worse, she discovers a sinister plot involving the very technology the Council feared.
As she’s forced to navigate lies and handle betrayal, her dream of becoming human seems impossibly far off as the world crumbles around her. Will she become human and save the Earth?
Reyna’s Lucid Dream
Reyna can't grow up yet; she's lost herself to a nightmare. So she heads to the only place where children go to overcome the inevitable: the Dream World.
But upon arrival, she learns that the refuge her sister had once shown her when she was a child is no longer safe.
Most of the other Dreamers have lost their dreams to terrifying monsters known as Fears who now roam the land freely and in greater numbers.
With the Dream World fading, Reyna embarks on a quest to find herself again, hoping there's still enough magic left to make her dreams come true.
The Color of the Waves
The Outside—a massive space station housing Earth's most elite scholars—has maintained a delicate peace for years. But the people on Earth, long denied entry due to their low morality scores, have grown to hate everything it stands for.
And two of the Outside's council members have resorted to desperate measures as the Outside's philosophy of Serenity wanes.
But Yunna Tanaka still believes in the promise of Serenity. Though she is shunned due to her walking disability and intelligence, she seizes her chance to enter the Outside through the entrance exam.
On the night before the exam, she dreams of the color of the waves—and embraces a primordial power. That same night, her oldest friend, Mason, wakes up from a nightmare, cursed with a very different power.
One of them will become humanity's last hope. The other will be the reason it needs it.
Into the Wild
Following the destruction of their homeland by the Ancient Beasts, the brothers, Chris and Tyler, have taken refuge in the hidden village of Ichrion, hoping to one day reclaim their homeland.
But they’re orphans in a strange land. And though they know evil is rising, they cannot venture beyond the village walls—the village elder forbids them.
Growing suspicious one day, they go against the village elder’s decrees and learn that everything they've been told about Ichrion was a lie.
The brothers are forced out of their home as evil pursues them. Yet that is only the start of their epic journey against evil.
Feedback Wanted The Caged Crown - Summary & Prologue
0 Upvotes
Synopsis: In 1966, when the 20-year-old politically inexperienced Queen of Midoria ascends to the throne, Elenora Ashila inherits a kingdom that has become increasingly polarized. Things take a dramatic turn, when high-ranking general, Rikard Pereno, urges her to make him prime minister and dissolve the parliament because of the ‘’threat’’ of communism. A caretaker hands her a telegram from a foreign reporter that tells her about what’s actually happening in her kingdom. A game of influence, persuasion, and loyalty ensues.
Prologue: God Save the Queen
At age four, Elenora Ashila became heiress to an increasingly polarized kingdom.
From that point on, she was going to be queen, not a consort, but a regnant. Her mother and grandmother were consorts, one before the other. Did they ever wish they were in charge like their husbands?
One thing had always been clear: Elenora wouldn’t rule alone. Her father, King Alfred VIII, mentioned something called a ‘’parliament’’. Was it a secondary body of the Royal Council, a large museum, or a new kind of stadium for the World Cups?
Her father said, ‘’They are an advisory chamber elected by the people. It’s what the youngsters call ‘democracy’.’’
His definition contradicted what Elenora had obtained in secret from Lucio, the Lord Chamberlain. In a real democracy, a monarchy was not only out of place, but they were completely needless. Elenora was expected to work with this newly established legislature. They could come up with any law they wanted, but ultimately, the king would have the final say.
Some democracy… Elenora pondered.
She wrestled with the idea for a while before putting it aside. As she reached the age of majority, she was finally learning about running the country. Up until then, she had perfected in waving to people, cutting ribbon, writing speeches, and learning table etiquette. All that ceremonial stuff would be her undoing.
Now, she was hearing words like royal decrees, appointments and dismissals of government officials, and commanding the Royal Guard.
Although the Midorian monarch was commander-in-chief of the Royal Armed Forces, she would have to share that power with the prime minister.
That was a title that floated around after the parliament, the Chamber of Delegates, was founded. Against the ideal ways of a democracy, the monarch appointed the prime minister in the end. To be fair, it became custom to pick the ones with the most votes. But what if the monarch chose someone from the minority?
King Alfred said, ‘’you might as well give that power up to a majority vote.’’
Elenora had more questions than answers regarding politics, because everyone around her rarely gave her a straight answer. She couldn’t ignore the parliamentary system was rising water. You couldn’t stop it, unless you used drastic methods to drain it. Those methods likely filled her father’s mind, as he was talking to his advisors about a growing ‘’leftist threat’’.
Politics were like science: They always came up with new words to complicate already complicated matters. This time, Elenora couldn’t push it away. What was leftism? Both in the Chamber of Delegates and the Royal Council, people spoke about socialism, communism, and anarchism. All these isms, and Elenora got a multitude of answers that never aligned well.
It wasn’t because the king didn’t bother teaching his heiress; his health had deteriorated for the worse. A cancer disease would soon take away the barely fifty-year-old king, and it was the kind that could turn the healthiest person into the most bedridden in a matter of months.
Queen Mariana, Elenora’s mother, urged her daughter to go see him in his bedchamber. It was only a matter of time.
She held her father’s hand as his soul was leaving his body. He had been king as far back as she remembered. Kings before him put duty before family. Somehow, he managed to balance both.
When she was playing in the garden as a kid, her father would come out the door after work to catch his daughter jumping onto his arms. He may not have taught his daughter much about politics, but he did teach her to play poker, chess, and keep a straight face amidst it all.
He answered, ‘’Games like that can teach you lots about a person.’’
She was twelve at the time and too confused to ask how.
The sickly king rolled his head over to face Elenora. He ran a finger across her cheek.
‘’My girl…’’ he said.
 Her twentieth birthday was five months ago, but she was still his little princess who was so full of life and could light everybody’s day with her smile. It could make the most depressed man’s day, if only for a few hours.
‘’Father?’’ Elenora asked.
His eyelids lifted a tiny bit.
‘’Am I ready? I feel like I know next to nothing…’’
‘’You will… when the time is right…’’
That assured her as much as anything else. Why wasn’t anyone telling her anything? Was Lucio even hiding stuff from her, despite their close relationship?
Elenora kissed her father’s forehead as she said goodbye. King Alfred passed away three hours later, but his death wasn’t announced until the early morning.
Lucio walked into Elenora’s room. She had hardly slept since she departed from her father. There was no time to mourn, as Lucio asked about her regnal name.
‘’Elenora I.’’ she replied.
No other queen had reigned over Midoria before. She had heard about old duchesses named like her.
Lucio smiled and bowed. ‘’Long live Queen Elenora I!’’
After years of being addressed as a Highness, she was now a Majesty. She was a princess that took her duties seriously; now she was a queen that could shape her kingdom for better or worse. Her coronation was scheduled already for next week.
All she had to do was listen, excluding an important oath she had to swear in front of tens of officials, nobles, celebrities, journalists, and cameras. This would mark the first televised coronation in Midoria’s history. Would this be its last?
Sitting on the Midorian throne, the same her father sat on as he pledged his oath, it was time for the first queen to honor that tradition.
Elenora’s chair was elevated above a staircase. By her side, stood her mother and grandmother, both queen consorts and mothers from two respectful generations. It dazed Elenora that she never had to worry about becoming either of those.
Father Paul, the Archbishop of the Church of Midoria, walked slowly towards the young queen. In his hands, he carried a stuffy red pillow with the Midorian crown on, a silver headwear decorated with glitter and a blood-red crystal on the forehead. A cross was on top.
She truly wasn’t going to rule alone.
The oath presented itself in her mind, and she lifted herself from her throne almost impulsively.
‘’I, Elenora of House Ashila, do solemnly swear that I will uphold the law and tradition, reign with dignity and wisdom, on behalf of Almighty God, and the welfare of the Green Kingdom. And this I shall do, until the day I die.’’
The words poured out by themselves. For a moment, Elenora feared she missed a verse.
She got to her knees, as Father Paul spoke, ‘’By the power vested in me, from the Lord and the Holy Spirit, I declare you queen of Midoria.’’
He paused as he carefully rested the crown on Elenora’s head. It was heavier than she imagined.
‘’Arise, Queen Elenora.’’
The stage was set. The time was now. The Elenorian Era had begun.
Feedback Wanted My new story Please give me your feed back. I'm doing this for the first time. I'm trying to figure out how to write from a male and female point of view. I appreciate anything.
It’s four in the morning on a Tuesday and it's still dark outside. The alarm clock is going off. I turned over in bed and shut off the alarm clock. Yawning, I stared at a few stray streaks of light on the ceiling. Sitting up in bed and stretching I pushed the covers back. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and I stared into the darkness. I am feeling pretty good this morning. I fixed my bed with the usual care. In my studio apartment, the layout had a half wall splitting the living room from the bedroom with a partial wall. This is why the bed sat opposite the closet. The closet doors were mirror. Everything I did was mirrored back at me. When I first moved into this apartment it took me some time not to be freaked out by the whole thing since I didn't turn all the lights on to get ready in the morning. Living on my own, there are quite a few things I learn as I go.
 I have gone out of my way today to look nice as well. Taking time to braid my hair and do my makeup. After that was done I pulled my clothes from the closet. I laid them on the bed and threw the pjs in the hamper. While I was getting dressed I looked outside. I have the slatted shades open on my sliding door on the second floor apartment. Outside I can't see any stars, just the lamp light from the parking lot. I slid on my black work pants and chef coat. I was happy. I am the kind of person who can count blessings. I may have to see the forest for the trees sometimes but eventually I get there. Today was one of those days. My bills were paid. I was feeling in relatively good health. I had a steady job. I had a great best friend. My coworkers liked me, well most of them. Things were looking up. There was only one thing I felt like I was missing out on. I had gotten here by sacrificing what everyone my age was out doing. I was being responsible, reasonable. I was managing all my time and my cable subscription was my wild expense. I kept promising myself that I’d get to the point where I’d let myself go out or try something. I’d be slightly adventurous just once and then go back so it would be okay. This, however, was not something that was pulling me in today. Today I was just going to enjoy my life and the job I really started to love.
  Stepping out of my apartment, the warm humid air hit me like a warm hug. I loved the feel of it on my skin. It reminded me why I loved living in Texas. I live in downtown San Antonio. I was right across the street from Santa Rosa Hospital. I was about a mile's walk from work. I work at the Emily Morgan Hotel. I had a car but saw no need to use it for a one mile walk. Being nineteen a mile wasn’t going to kill me. I did use it if I wasn't feeling up to it or had something to do after. I looked again at my watch just out of habit. I locked the door and put my keys in the purse I was carrying. I turned and went for the stairs. I laughed to myself at how good I had gotten at living life in the dark. Walking down the stairs I put in my earbud and turned on my music. I waved at my car as I passed by it. I listened to the noise my heavy shoes made on broken and loose asphalt as I walked the length of the parking lot. It seemed unnecessarily loud since it was so quiet at this time.  I eventually hit the sidewalk and began the mile walk to work. I wanted to hum but I always tried to keep an awareness around me since it was still downtown. I had been doing this a few months already and had not had any problems so I had some confidence but one can never be one hundred percent.
Hello,
I wanted to share the Preface and Prologue of my Young Adult novel, which was originally written in Spanish. Is it good? Would it need heavy editing to bring it up to publishing or readable standards? Other comments about the content (prose, characters, setting, dialogue, etc) would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you!
Feedback Wanted What do you think about inserts like these?
Post image
5 Upvotes
For context: I’m writing a dark psychological queer fantasy romance (“Crown & Chaos”) where the hybrid demon/human Prince of the World opts to screen his love interest via dossier in a post-Hellrisen world (where Hell has risen on Earth due to his birth, so he’s a little like a Hell Jesus.)
Anyway - my main question is - what do you think about things like this in a book? Do you tend to read it all and investigate it? Does the black text or blue pen intrigue you more? Do you read it all or skim it?
It was inspired by A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder & made it on Canva & Procreate (pic of Benji to be sketched in Polaroid) & is a purposefully intrusive (perhaps uncomfortable!) collection of information. This will be the only planned insert in the book (in chapter 13) - so it’s not an ongoing theme.
It’s still a WIP ofc, so any feedback would be great so I can polish up :)
(I would also appreciate any feedback on my draft chapters generally (currently at 37k) so lmk if you’d like a link!)
Feedback Wanted Chapter One of an Original Story
'Chapter One
“Why are you leaving?” Emrys questioned, her voice cracking as she followed her brother around while he packed anything he saw of his. “You just got here!” She whisper-shouted, not wanting to wake her mother up.
“I can’t stand it here, Em.” He sighed, tossing a pile of unwashed t-shirts into his suitcase. “There’s nothing for me here and-”
“I’m here. Am I not enough for you to want to stay?” Swiping at her eyes Emrys pushed him softly, hoping he’d look at her but he instead turned to rummage through his half empty drawers.
“That’s not wha-” Before he could finish she cut him off.
“Then what did you mean? You mean to tell me you trying is coming here to say hi and then leaving the first time mom has a comment about the way you do things? Cause that doesn’t sound like trying to me, you’re just making excuses because you’ve found better and you think you can replace us.”
“I’m not making excuses, you don’t know what it’s like to live here.”
“Oh-” Emrys laughed dryly, her throat burning as tears threatened to spill from her eyes. “I didn’t realize you were a comedian cause I’ve been living here for 16 years, Ethyn, 16 years!” Her voice raised, no longer caring whether their mom heard or not. “And you left me! And you left me last time and you’re doing it again, Ethyn! You know what? I’m glad you’re leaving because now I can see what kind of person you are.” Emrys paused only to immediately start pacing when she realized Ethyn still wasn’t looking at her. “You’re a coward, you’re selfish, and you’re the kind of person people are better off without!”
“Em-” Ethyn pleaded but she was already storming out of his room, a loud thud following after she slammed the door behind her.
“Ethyn not coming back?” Her mother spat, the fork she was holding tapping repeatedly against her plate.
“No.” Emrys responded sharply as she made her way to the pantry to grab cereal.
“Don’t snap at me, little lady, I’m not the one who left.”
“Sorry.”
“Sorry what?”
“Sorry, ma’am.” Emrys enunciated, her hands shaking violently as she poured the milk into her bowl.
“Good.” Her mother paused, taking a long sip out of her cup. “Since you’re off work Friday I told Naya you could watch her kids for her.”
“What? I have plans, I told you that a week ago.”
“Well, now you have new plans. You’re gonna have to cancel whatever you thought you had going on because bills don’t pay themselves, Bean.” Emrys nodded briefly as she put her cereal in the fridge. “What’re you doing? You better not be wasting that.”
“I’ll eat it later. I think I’m gonna go to bed, I’m not feeling too well right now.”
“Sure thing, be up by 6 though, you gotta get to work early tomorrow.”
“Got it.” She mumbled, walking towards her room, the faded shadow of the name ‘Jellybean’ on her door.
Walking in, Emrys stared at the half painted walls, sage green paint battling the original blue her room had been. An old calendar hung on the wall, still stuck in July despite it almost being the end of September.
A heavy sigh left her as she looked around her room, cracking her back she turned to her dresser, opening her drawers and emptying its contents.
An annoying ringing sound came from somewhere Emrys couldn’t place. She shouted for it to stop, turning her head left and right like that would help to dim whatever was trying to bother her.
The ringing continued, stopping briefly, then starting up again a second later. “What?” She groaned, her eyes opening slowly, a familiar blur covering her vision as she adjusted to her surroundings.
Looking around for whatever was making the noise she saw the time, the red light on her alarm clock showing the time ‘3:32 A.M.’. Groaning loudly, Emrys rubbed her hands along the floor, hoping she’d find anything in the mess that now swallowed her room.
Finally standing up she glanced at her bed, though it was half made and in another corner, she could see her phone peeking out from the blankets.
6 missed calls from Ethyn.'
I don't have everything planned out as this idea hit me like a semi-truck as I was daydreaming but I think the overall premise is going to be a paranormal, local town, out of town (I don't even know), mystery kind of thing haha😅.
This is the product of writing on and off for 2 days so I know there are probably some errors but I was wondering how this lands? Is this something you guys would be intrigued by?
Would anyone be willing to provide feedback on the first chapter of my post-apocalyptic YA novel? I have five chapters complete but would really appreciate some input and opinions of other writers before I get too deep into the story.
