I made this piece (3 x 7 ft) for my first open show and it received second place for the category “artistic expression- large”. I got dinged for technique (I’ve only been weaving with shafts for a couple months), but I’m so happy I placed.

Interlocking weft on crackle weave with up to 7 shuttles

I've been upping my weaving game lately... I brought my countermarch down from the barn where it was living until I finished the office, which meant disassembling it. It seemed like a good opportunity to replace the old mismatched cords, too. Cue two days of crawling around tweaking everything... Six treadles, six jacks, and twelve lamms means a lot of lengths to adjust.

I needed a warp on the loom to finish tuning it. This just happened to be when I got fed up with commercial colorways in 8/4 cotton, and embarked on mixing fiber reactive dyes for yarn instead. (I'd dabbled before with fabric.) So I made sure my samples were long enough to make some striped towels, with a little left over for my records.

I've finally done (almost) all the samples, and decided to arrange them in chromatic order. I started weaving today, on a 2.5 yard warp for two towels. Not sure how far through the spectrum I'll get with each towel, we'll see!

8/4 cotton (natural and hand-dyed) set at 16 epi, 2/1 twill blocks. 16.5" in a 12 dent reed. Handbuilt 36" 6-shaft countermarch rug loom from the 70s, based on a Bergman.

Specs: 8/2 cotton, unmercerized, 20epi, 31.2in in the reed, 4S Spot Bronson pattern from the Handweaver's Pattern Directory. (The colours are a little off in the photo - it's kind of a forest green for the warp and a medium, mossy green for the weft.)

I'm asking early, since I've just started the weaving - I'm roughly a yard into a 10-yd warp. But when done, the plan is to cut the long warp into 3 panels and seam them together into a blanket. I'm also going to machine wash (cold) and gently tumble dry to get the cloth to tighten and plump up a little bit. My question is whether to cut, seam, and hem the blanket before the wash-and-dry process or after. Thanks for advice!

Made these two hand towels today trying waffle weave by using a pickup stick for the first time on my RHL. The rainbow one is 2 over/2 under and the green and brown one is 1 over/1 under on the pick up stick.

They have yet to be washed and dried so it will be interesting to see how they shrink and full differently than just plain weave. I can already feel a difference in drape, the 2/2 is especially soft and pliable whereas the plain weave is much more stiff and the 1/1 is kind of in between

Peaches and cream cotton yarn, 8 dent heddle, Schacht Cricket 15" loom

I did my first project with white crochet cotton, a simple weave which was boring by row 20, so I decided to make my second project more interesting. Then, while I was struggling to commit to my next weaving project (yarn is expensive y'all!) I needed a box to store my cross stitch threads for my WIP (there are 90 colors, my box only stores 60 bobbins) and I ordered one which arrived with 100 bobbins of really poor thread. I was expecting an empty box, and so I figured I'd use the free threads to make a lovely blue... Thing. Filled out my warp board - I believe it's a 4 yard max - and set up the loom.

Then I saw a pattern in my "learn to weave" book which looked fun. So I dug out some white wool (selected because I hate it and want it gone, and it's kinky. My actual project I'm struggling to commit to is going to use kinky wool, and I figured this would work as practice) and got going.

I did not read the vast majority of the book. So I didn't know what overshot was. Even if I had, I'm not sure I'd have clocked what the pattern instructions meant. Fortunately my MIL is visiting and told me what I was doing wrong. I only have one shuttle, so I hastily cut another out of cardboard, and pulled the pink linen that is earmarked as warp for my "actual project I'm struggling to commit to" to do the tabby rows.

Why yes, I am a chaos gremlin, thanks for noticing.

Anyway, the image attached shows three hours of work and while I'm sure as hell not bored, I'm beginning to think I may have bitten off more than I can chew. Also, it's definitely not blue.

Please tell me it's too late to give up now and I'll get better as I go! Also tell me it's a really lovely pattern, and since it's a learning/ waste project, it'll be an absolute bonus to have anything at the end of it. I keep telling myself, but I don't really believe me because I clearly don't know what I'm talking about 😅

I learned so much during the weaving of this tapestry. (My camera has trouble with the colors so they look a bit weird). I have massive gaps/slits in places haha and weird bunching in others. The design (and I was afraid of this) was a bit challenging for someone new to tapestry and maybe not fully suited for it in general. But we make, fail, and make again!

Next up: tapestry with wool from the Weaversbazaar (which was unfortunately an absolute fortune to buy because of EU import costs, so I may look at dying yarn that I can buy locally). The colors from bazaar are stunning tho and I couldn’t find anything via google locally. But have since talked to some weavers who gave me some tips for buying yarn locally.

I’m going to try some interlock techniques to keep the next tapestry strong and stable. For some of these techniques its better to weave from the back, so I’m going to try that instead of from the front like I did with this one.

I picked up a used drawloom and with it came this huge pile of both short- and long-eye heddles. Once I get them sorted, what’s the best way to store them so this doesn’t happen again?

I was aiming for a plaid type of effect. I am using the same weight yarn for both warp and weft. What can I do to make the warp visible next time please? Thanks so much.

There are some inconsistencies where I was experimenting… learned a lot! Still need to learn how to end a scarf so the weft doesn’t need to be tied off in the finishing knots. It’s the only way I know to avoid the weft getting loose with wear. Any tips??

Easy Weaver loom with DIY pattern stick, unknown thrifted warp (cotton or super soft wool), wool weft.

I am considering buying a large tapestry loom, but the model doesn't have notches to hold the warp in place. How much harder does this make warping the loom? I have only have warped a frame loom with notches at the EPI I'm working at.

Hey all. I’m trying to make long fringe (60 inches) for a project i’m working on. I’m testing, i have wrapped thicker yarn around my desk continuously then taped cut and sewed it. This worked well, but with the very fine viscose yarn i’m planning to use it would probably take 500 hours😭. Any tips on tools i can use etc would be much appreciated

Hi there! I'm looking to see if anyone can recognize or name this weave structure. I'll be doing a week-long weaving retreat in VT in a few weeks and I'm hoping to make a blanket with this pattern. Any help / leads appreciated!

Colors are a bit washed out thanks to my phone camera. Click on the first picture to see the full scarf. The hard color change is actually how the yarn was connected to continue the strand unfortunately, not where I added more in. The last picture is ending salvages(left) compared to beginning salvages(right). I'm hoping I can find similar colors in the future because I'd love to make a longer one!

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the recommendations, and even though it seems counterintuitive, I have decided after some thought to sell it. I don't have anywhere else to store her, and I think she would be much better off with someone who will love her and use her. I'm sad to see her go, but the times I had were great. All of the advice was really appreciated.

I have this beautiful loom I got last year for a great price. She’s gorgeous, been around since roughly the 60’s, and was restored by a skilled craftswoman about a decade and a half ago. I love her deeply, she’s a work of art.

The problem is, I’m a college student. I don’t live in my childhood home most of the year and when I do, I’m processing fleeces, working on summer classes, or working a job. I’d love to weave more on a floor loom, it’s always in my mind… but I don’t have time. And she takes up so much space I could use for pattern drafting or a spinning wheel.

I guess I’m looking for advice from others who know looms and how special they can be to own. I know wherever she goes she’ll be loved, but I just don’t know if I want to part with her. In a couple of years, I’ll be able to move her to a new place… in a couple of years.

I guess, does anyone have advice, or their own stories to contribute?

Warp is a mixture of lots of different yarns including ribbon/mohair/wool/novelty yarns sett at 6 epi in a 6 dent reed. I’m using plain weave to let the weft yarn speak for itself.

Hi weaving friends! I'm relocating to Madrid this fall and I'm looking for recommendations/ a way to continue my weaving journey! I've been taking classes on a 4-shaft and 8-shaft floor loom for about a year, so I'd say I'm not a total beginner (I've done independent projects and simple self-drafts) but still learning. I've not been able to find many guilds/studios/resources/supplies/classes etc in the area, and maybe that's just cause there's not a big weaving scene there, not sure. I'd appreciate any tips :)

I've wanted to weave for ages and I'm finally buying my first weaving loom, but the gap between a rigid heddle and a floor loom is throwing me. Rigid heddle looks beginner friendly and cheap and small, but I keep reading that people outgrow them and wish they'd jumped straight to something bigger. floor looms can do way more shafts and faster sheds but they cost a fortune and eat a whole room, and I'm in an apartment. I mostly want to make scarves and maybe some dishtowels to start, nothing huge. Is a rigid heddle going to frustrate me in six months, or is it genuinely enough to learn on? And if I do bigger later, does anything resell well?

I have no loyalty to any brand yet, so if certain makes are easier to live with than others I'd take that input too.

Handspun weft, my friend dyed this when she just had opened her yarn/fiber shop. It's merino/silk spun in a low twist single and fulled.

Warp is durable crochet cotton nr 10 I got from someone who de-stashed and dyed with procion.

Pattern is a 4 shaft point twill with a twist. And I am doing a clasped weft, because my weft thread was thinner than I expected and I was watching Jane Staffords weaving school and saw her using thin silk in clasped weft and figured that would be a fun solution. First time. Fun to do!

I'm new to using pick up sticks and this is my first try at waffle weave. Using Peaches and Cream cotton for warp and weft on a 10 dent reed.

I have been wanting to learn how to warp multiple ends at once but didn’t want to “waste” yarn and time winding spools and risking it turning into a tangled nightmare. Inspiration struck at spotlight when they had a giant tub of clearance gutermann thread. I did some tub diving and came up with a reasonably coherent colour palette of gutermann sulky cotton 12.

I warped eight ends at a time using my highly sophistical setup of thread spools on double pointed needles on my lazy Kate and a second hand warping heddle thing wedged in a bookcase.

It’s ready to wind into the back beam and so far so good (she says trying not to jinx it all). This 640 end warp no joke took about three hours to wind and get into the loom and spaced out in the raddle. I was really happy with that. The silkiness of the thread is helping avoid tangles but as the total cost of the 5m warp was $8 and very minimal time I am not emotionally attached to it if it turns into a tangled mess. Wish me well!
