Thank you y’all for the advice on the ripeness of the cantaloupe. She broke off from the vine last sunday and I was quite nervous to cut into it incase it was not ripe, but today I did it!!! And boy was I happily surprised 😳

I’ve noticed people who grow zucchini fall into 1 of 2 camps

My potatoes and onions did very well this year in Zone 6b! We planted 36 seed potatoes in two 18 sq ft plots. 1 sq ft per potato; half Kennebec half red. I ended up harvesting 25 lbs of red and 45 lbs of Kennebec. The red, white and yellow onions shared a 6'x3'x6" bed with gravity fed drip irrigation and all but 2 of the onions were usable at the end of the season.

And if you're curious, those are fermented cucumbers, not pickles. 😄

Well I lied, the sticky icky is my favorite to harvest, but carrots are a close second 😉

New gardeners, I just want to let you know that you are doing great.

I’ve had my own garden 50 years now. People always exclaim what a beautiful huge garden I have and love my bags of yummy veggies.

Gardening isn’t perfect though. This year I’ve lost three dwarf tomatoes to either the heat or a nutrient issue (new irrigation sprinkler system I’m still tinkering with). My cucamelons didn’t sprout and I got impatient thinking bad seeds so I planted more. Nope the soil just wasn’t warm enough and now I have a tangled mess of double the plants.

I have weeds growing where I shouldn’t have weeds. I have sunburn on my fruit I didn’t tuck away. I was lucky to have even a few pathetic bunches of grapes given the spring we had. Tomatillos are sprouting up everywhere (I swear they have a magical teleportation device). Something is eating my eggplants. My chard and spinach has bad soil (many new beds this year and the second batch of dirt delivered is stunting plants - first batch from same supplier was fine). I have a hard time thinning my lettuce. And Blossom End Rot got one of my bushes big time.

I could show you my beautiful garden or my bountiful harvest photos, but I wanted you to see the imperfections. To let you know the experienced gardener gets the same problems you do and that it’s ok! You are all doing just fine. Don’t stress and enjoy the results of your efforts. Good luck.

Zone 7a - First-time growing garlic! What an exercise in patience. Definitely dialing in the spacing this coming fall, but I'm thrilled with the final harvest.

I hate okras, a LOT, especially fried ones lol, but my mom absolutely *loves* fried okra.

I was gonna give her the first harvest (4) a few weeks ago as a surprise but I spoiled it by accident while we ate dinner and her goofy self smirked right at me 😤. But she still was happy when I gave them 😊

And the plant is really sturdy and tolerable too. It's been raining a fuck ton here and I have like 50 of those huge grey shield aphids crawling everywhere from leaving my dead Cocozelle zucchini in the ground.

Feedback: I'm currently experimenting with the future of tomato cultivation for you (I'm in the south of France; the temperature hasn't dropped below 35°C in the shade for a month, full sun and no rain).

I've tested different tomato varieties since a lot of years and this years only full-strength varieties suited to drought and heat. The result is that my plants are doing very poorly. The flowers aren't pollinating, or aren't flowering at all, leaves are burned.

I'm having fun testing all the wild tomato varieties I can find, and to my great surprise, they're the only ones that don't mind the heat. I have a magnificent harvest of wild tomatoes.

This shows how much selective breeding has eliminated many resistance genes that allow for plant adaptability.

Have you managed to find tomato varieties that are resistant to extreme temperatures?

Successful varieties: Wildtomate peru, Everglades tomato

It's my first time growing a garden. I'm teaching myself and my kids more about where our food comes from and why it's important. Our first bell pepper has started and safe to say it looks a little odd. Any insight as to what could be happening? Growing in southern michigan.

The plants are sprayed with a slurry I make of DE and water from a poison spray bottle so the white is not a concern at all.
