Music question

Upvotes

Hi! I’m an incoming sophomore at NYU currently looking to transfer to somewhere like Vassar in the near future. I’m a singer-songwriter and am curious about the music scene at Vassar. Do they have good classes and/or clubs for students like me? I know the scene is pretty artsy so I’m hopeful. :)

Easiest first year writing seminars?

Can anyone recommend any easy first year writing seminars? I’m pre med and want a good gpa but writing essays is my weak spot, so are there any FWS that are basically a guaranteed easy A?

Pre Med Classes?

Hey I’m looking for anyone who was/is pre-med but majored in something totally unrelated. Which pre-med classes did you take and when did you take them? And would I be able to skip any bio classes since I took AP Bio and AP Environmental Science? I’m really lost on which classes I should register for; I really wish we got our advisors sooner 😭

Health Insurance

I got my billing today, and I noticed that the amount that is being asked of me to pay is an extra 3k, and when I went to the details, I noticed that they put student health insurance as a part of my bill. My parents and I cannot afford to pay such a price. It exceeds the amounts that Vassar expects of us to contribute to pay. I can't waive the insurance since I am a California resident and my health insurance is with Kaiser, and we have an HMO plan; that automatically makes me ineligible for a waiver. I don't know what to do, and I'm a bit worried because my parents cannot afford to pay that much. Should I call the financial aid office to ask if they can re-adjust my financial package so that it covers the health insurance fee, or do I call Gallagher?

Are ottomans included in the “no upholstered furniture” rule?

If you have put your bed on the highest notch for storage underneath and you’re petite, if you don’t have an ottoman, what are you using? Or is this just a “yeet yourself onto the bed and hope for the best” situation?

Also, if you need your heating pad/electric blanket and large lithium battery for health/disability reasons, are you likely to get it approved?

Poli Sci Reading Load?

Hey I’m starting at Vassar in the fall and I wanna be a poli sci major because I find that stuff really interesting but I’m pre med. I was wondering what the reading load is like? I’m honestly such a bad reader (like really slow and don’t actually pick up on anything I read) and that’s been making me question if I’ll succeed as a poli sci major cus all I ever hear abt that is that there’s a lot of reading to it.

(I’m trying to have as high a gpa as possible because I’m trying to get into med school)

House for sale near Vassar - College Ave

Just letting everyone know that there is a house for sale a couple of blocks from Vassar, on College Avenue.

The house is a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house with an extra "office" room that many people would use as a bedroom. It is currently furnished and the buyers can have the furniture if they ask for it.

This would be perfect for a Vassar parent to buy. They could house their child, rent rooms to their friends, and then sell it for the appreciation 4 years later.

Anyone interested can type "118 College Avenue" into Zillow and get info. Please don't message me for it.

Vassar Incoming Freshmen Health Forms

hi, I am an incoming freshmen and I know that Vassar requires 3 health forms: a documentation of a physical exam, updated immunization records, and a TB risk assessment worksheet. For the TB form, on the health portal website, it shows a form that I can download and fill out, but for the physical examination, there is no form on the Forms Tab to download and fill out.

Is there supposed to be a form on the healthcare portal for the physical that I need to print out and give to my doctor OR is my doctor just supposed to write and print out their own documentation of my physical exam? any help is appreciated, thank u!

ALSO I do know that submissions for the health forms just opened today and that the portal is supposed to be reupdated today so maybe that's why I don't see a physical examination form yet???

Partying in nyc

Has anyone here ever gone to Brooklyn Storehouse or other house/techno shows in the city? I’ve been to Chris Stussy, Seth Troxler etc.., and I’m always wondering how people around here handle getting home when the parties end at 5–7 a.m.
Do you just stay in the city, catch the first Metro-North train back, drive, or what? Curious what everyone usually does.

What bag do I use?

Kinda dumb, but I'm between splurging on a nice tote bag or a backpack. Current Vassar students are one better than the other, and what is the carrying load looking like throughout the day?

Vassar Math Placement Exam

I took AP Calculus Ab in high school but I didn’t have a chance to take the exam due to illness. I am attending Vassar College this fall. I was thinking I could take the math placement exam. I was wondering if anyone has taken it and can tell me about it.

Where can I safely park without a parking pass?

I really want to bring my car next semester, but I'll only be a sophomore so I won't be able to get a parking pass. Anyone know good spots to park where I won't get ticketed?

Should I bring a car to Vassar?

I am currently committed to Vassar (yay!) but I was wondering if I should bring a car or if the hassle is not worth it. I live in California so a road trip across the country is certainly not ideal but is doable. I also want to commute to NYC a lot and I also have friends at Yale that I would want to visit often. I know that there is the subway, but most routes to New Haven require traveling to NYC first which increases the commute from around 1 hr 40 mins to over 3 hrs. I also just think having a car in Poughkeepsie would be nice (or not idk lol). Would bringing a car be worth it?

What is there to do around Vassar?

hi! i am currently deciding between vassar and a larger university in a city. i really think academically and socially vassar would probably be a better fit, but i'm really worried about being in such a small town, especially since one of my priorities during the application process was being in a city and having things to do. i'm wondering what students do for fun around here, and what kind of places there are to explore in the town (restaurants, shopping, etc).

Safety

How safe is Vassar? I'm an incoming student, and that is my mom's greatest concern, since it's in Poughkeepsie and there are high crime rates. How safe is Vassar itself? Are there any emergency lines and any medical buildings to go to in case of an emergency?

Gift cards for local spots?

Thinking about some small gifts that family can give our incoming Vassar Freshman. Do you have any suggestions of local places that students tend to like and you can get a gift card for? Or does the on-campus coffee shop do gift cards? For sure, we could do uber or DoorDash type things, but I was wondering about local businesses. Thanks in advance!
