Kris and Jake dominated UM for the entire time I listened to them (first show 2005).

But I also like the more loosey goosey Zwang and no Jake.

I don't really miss the super fast mega guitar solos in every jam section. After King Gizzard I like more simple jammy improv that doesn't necessarily have to always build and build. Grateful Dead was kinda like that and I think I prefer it.

Bayliss is good at guitar and doesn't always default to mega fast stuff. I like hearing Joel more. I do miss Kris Myers, but he dominated the sound so much.

Plus, now Jake can follow his dreams and join the KKK and listen to weird hate podcasts in all his free time.

The 7/19 show on Nugs is so good, I am liking this. If anything, I'd want UM to turn more into a loosey free form jammy band and not as much prog stuff, if only in their improv sections.

The timing is impeccable for the band. If Jake was still an active member the fellas would have some major decisions to make. Even if Jake was still on his “hiatus” they would be put into a tough position. This would be a huge PR crisis.

Revisiting it today for no particular reason...

…they have performed a sort of mathematical miracle by only losing 1/6 of the band but somehow becoming 1/2 of what they were.

I’ve listened to every single show since they went Jakeless and haven’t heard a single version of any song that was better than the worst versions with Jake. I’m left trying to convince myself that it’s worth going to see them anymore, thinking I should just sit tight with the thoughts of what once was. No sense in paying to taint fond memories.

that Jake isn’t in the band anymore. At the same time I’m not worried about UM, they’re killing it and I’ll continue to see them. What will Jake do? Umphreys was the perfect band for him to be in.

They rocked me in Charlotte, and the rest of the tour has been sounding great as well. Last night in Wilmington – what I’ve listened so far at least – was another heater.

I wasn’t planning to go, but I’ll be up there for Phish on Saturday anyway. I think I’m more excited about seeing UM.

Been seeing the boys since 2013, two summer camps, many a multi night runs, but hot damn the vibes have been immaculate these last few shows!
