Laser engravers have been showing up in woodworking shops more and more over last couple years, not replacing hand tools but sitting alongside them as an add on for detail work and personalisation.

Demand for custom engraved cutting boards and signs and ornaments and memorial plaques has gotten huge at craft fairs and online markets.

CO2 lasers in 40w to 80w range handle most hardwoods cleanly, walnut and maple engrave beautifully and cherry gets that deep contrast that photographs well for product listings

Ventilation situation is different from dust collection tho, laser exhaust has particulates and fumes that need dedicated extraction, so running it through an existing dust collector is not ideal and most shops end up venting outside separately.

Pen number 1 is a red mallee Burl, the second is box elder Burl with red glitter epoxy. Both with different types of majestic pen kits both turned tonight. I’m getting good at this in that the red mallee pen took me 30 minutes start to finish. I’m selling a ton of pens recently which has limited my bowl turning time, but who cares, I’m making almost 1500 a month now just doing something I was going to do anyway!

Photography is always something I struggled with, how do I take a picture of something I worked hard on that would show it the same way I see it in front of me? The simple answer was a shadow box! This thing was 30 bucks on amazon and is such a good piece of equipment, these two pictures were my first attempt and I think I could do a lot better with practice. I’m very happy with both of the pens and the shadow box, I highly recommend it!

Btw I did order a pen stand that would hold the pen at an upward angle but I broke it trying to unwrap the packaging.

You can't white-knuckle a delicate cut. The same as you can't out-muscle a skid with poor bevel contact, the tool has to do the work, your hand can't fix what a bad tool messes up (during the cut). And on a push cut, all of the control is in your right hand, the left hand only stabilizes the tool.

I brace the outside of the bowl with my fingers to prevent it from chattering on the entry, and then just hold the tool down on the rest with one finger. This is a freshly sharpened 1/2" gouge, it's only used for 7 finishing cuts to thin this bowl down from about 1/2" to under 1/8". You can see a little skid at the start when I went in without enough bevel support, my gouge's nose is a little blunt right now, so even if its razor sharp, it doesn't dig in to start a very fine cut as much as a more pointy tool would.

After last week’s catch and breaking my tool (previous post) I came into some African mahogany and it was the perfect size for 4 handles. One down, 3 to go.

this one was one of my old works (I'm a newbie, so this one is not as old as you think), that thickness and meat on the wall was always disgust me so i finally changed it a little bit, don't know if it's any better.

Trying to identify what this might be? Found in the bottom of my brother’s wood pile and immediately snagged to go into the lathe 😂 guessing this is Australian something… (most of the stuff in our sheds is native Aussie)

Really enjoying this painted poplar, the wood has a fantastic grain and variation in color. This platter is 12 inches across, the rim is epoxy and yellowheart.

Today, I turned a slimline pen out of natural canvas phenolic. It's a canvas laminate that is commonly used for knife scales and electrical insulation. It's a bit rough on tools, but it finishes so nicely.

Tuned in C# (277hz). Syringa (lilac) and cherry

A platter/dish/shallow bowl made out of tulip and an almost too punky spalted beech bud vase....

Finished with tried and true. Probably gonna give it a couple more coats.

Wife went out of town and I thought I’d treat myself to some wood turning. Picked up 3 pieces of random wood from the $5.99 per pound wood scrap bin from my local Rockler. This 3rd one was a wild surprise. Turned out to be camphor wood. I have never experienced this wood before. It smelled amazing and turned even better. Really love how this one turned out.
(Also made a little chalice looking thing with the scrap off cut)

I used a 2x2 cherry blank for a super simple pipe as a thank you present. I used a forstner bit for the bowl instead of multi axis turning. I think it turned out ok

Received this blank from an older wood turner that has stopped turning due to health. It was very dry. Not sure what wood (I’m always wrong when I guess, so I won’t) but the bluish streaks seemed to be a result of some small insect holes which I ended up filling with black UV epoxy. This was my first time turning off the foot and I love it!

This is my latest segmented turning project. It has 13 patterned rings with 36 segments per ring, plus a 36-piece Wenge rim. I rotated each ring 7.5° to create the vortex. The finished bowl is 14 inches in diameter.

One unexpected moment in the build was a cracked tenon that failed during mounting, so I removed it and remounted the blank with a 4-inch faceplate. I would be interested to hear what other turners think of the pattern and the final form.

I turned and carved this coffee cup from a beech spindle, added a black walnut lid, and carved a spoon handle from oak to serve as a lid handle. The cup and lid are finished with pure tung oil, and the spoon handle is sprayed with 3D Mickey Shine airbrush paint.

It stands about 2 inches / 5 centimetres tall, and is 3½ inches / 9 centimetres wide.

I turned a couple low profile cocktail smokers, but I felt like the design placed the flame too close to the cocktail. So, I elevated the basket by a couple inches and added the barrel design. It really helped to improve the flavor of the drink.

still hard to lowering the wall thickness, any suggestion? i think that's the hardest part for me
