Question Graduate Studies

Hi everyone! Has anyone here had experience being considered through a special admissions pathway instead of the regular admissions process due to a lower undergraduate GPA? I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences, how the process went, and what your chances of admission were.

Thank you so much!

Question public transit off campus

hello! im an incoming 1st year student who doesn't drive but is used to taking busses.

im planning on living in an annex and can commute to campus easy enough as i have an electric bike, but i was wondering what the public transportation was like for travelling off campus (i.e. downtown ptbo); is it reliable, bike-friendly, cheap, safe, etc.? what are the best routes for going off campus to downtown (and how long do they take on avg)?

more-so looking for personal experiences and advice/tips but some guidance towards any official transit stuff would be great, too!

thanks a bunch :)

Im applying as a transfer student (I think, I dont think I have any viable transfer credits if that even matters). I just graduated from a social service worker diploma program, and now I want to apply for Ecological Restoration and Water Sciences.

ER is very new program and so I havent heard much about it, but Water Sciences I havent heard a thing about it anywhere.

I was more wondering...

What the programs were like

If Im able to do a double Major in those

What the on campus situation is

Question Any ‘social’ clubs in Durham?

Hello, I’m a bit nervous and somewhat awkward, so I’m wondering if there are any ‘social’ clubs (could be any) available in the Durham campus for Trent. It can be any but I’d rather it to be one-on-one, more chances for a conversation kind of club, rather than people all partying or drinking around (note: I don’t hate those kind of activities, but I am looking for any avenues where I can slowly work on my skills in-person).

Question Contacting a faculty member

I should preface this by saying that I am not a student at Trent University, but rather a student at another university. But due to circumstances I will explain soon, it will become apparent why I need to contact a faculty member.

I am preparing to write my bachelor’s thesis on the pirate Edward Thatch, better known as Blackbeard. I’ve read numerous works and articles on the subject, and I have seen one reoccurring article among the citations.

The article is called “Blackbeard: The Creation of a Legend” by Arne Bialuschewski and it was published in the journal “Topic: the Washington & Jefferson College Review (58)” in 2012. The article, along with the entire journal it seems, is lost as it cannot be found anywhere online. I have tried numerous databases and my own university’s online library, but I have found nothing.

In a desperate attempt to find it I emailed Dr. Bialuschewski, who is a tenured assistant professor at Trent University, through the email address found on the university’s website earlier this week. In the email I asked if he knew of any way to access the article. Today I got the response that my email couldn’t be forwarded to the email address.

Is there any other way I can contact him or find this article? Is there actually anything I can do other than give up on this search?

Question Struggling student apartment hunting help!! 🙏🏾

I’m a broke 18 year old student moving to Peterborough soon for university, and I’m really struggling with rent costs.

Does anyone know of a cheap one bedroom or studio apartment in the area under or around $1,000 a month? I don’t have a big budget, so any help or leads would mean a lot.

(I’m going to Trent)

Advice I want to switch from Psychology to Biology

I already know people are going to say "just talk to academic advising!" and I will but I want peoples thoughts who have actually switched majors.

So right now I'm doing a BSc Honours in Psychology, and psychology is nice and all I like it but I don't love it. I've always been interested in Biology but I never thought about going to school for it due to the jobs relating not making the amount of money I like. I've gotten to the point now where I don't care about how much I will be making but rather I want to make sure I'm doing something I love so I want to make that switch.

I'm only going into my second year so hopefully it isn't too late- but I want to hear from others who have switched majors and what the process was like for them and what they recommend!

Residence Residence Payment

Hey! My friend and I are living in residence for our first year at Trent University, we have selected aa Traditional Double room, est. $9,775. We know that this is paid in two installments at the same date of tuition fees, but were wondering how much it is split across the two as the tuition is split 50/50 for the two terms, does anybody know what it was like in previous years?

Hi everyone!

My name is Sylvia. I'm a doctoral student who's currently looking for research participants. I've always been curious about why we use AI chatbots and how they compare to people who are in relationships with other humans, which is why I'm studying it for my dissertation. This survey is completely anonymous. You can take part if:

  • You're Canadian
  • 19+
  • Comfortable reading English
  • You are in a romantic relationship with another human OR
  • You are interacting with AI romantically

If you're interested, then you can click on the link below:

My REB approval is attached to this post too :)

Thank you!

Residence Upper-year suites/Graduate Housing

I was sent an offer for a single room a few days ago from Trent for a single room, however, the lease doesn't explicitly state whether I'll be placed in the Graduate style apartment in Wallis Hall or live with several other roommates in one of the annexes on Water Street.

Anyways, have you guys lived in graduate/upper year housing at Trent? What was it like? Also, I know parking at Traill College is limited, but what is the parking situation like at the Annexes? I will need to use my car quite frequently to travel home and go to placement (I'm going into my first year of the education program)

I'm also just deciding whether or not I want to get my own place off campus considering the fact that I believe all upper-year/graduate housing is an 11 month lease.

Question Compressed Nursing Admission Requirements

Hello!

I'm currently in undergrad for a B.A. in Psych and I'm hoping to switch into a nursing program instead. I'm looking at compressed programs as I don't particularly want to be in school for four more years, having to "restart." It seems as though most compressed programs require science courses to have been taken in university, but the admission requirements for Trent state the following:

"Prerequisite courses: biology, chemistry, and math, English+ (min. 60 in each) or meeting the college or Ontario high school subject requirements listed above, and a full-course credit (1.0) in Introductory Psychology*"

Does this mean I'm eligible to apply if I've taken bio and chem in high school but not in university? Thank you!

Residence Living in Wallis Hall/Traill College

Hi,

I'm going into my first year of my consecutive B.Ed at Trent, and I was offered a single room at Wallis Hall, and I just wanted to know what it's like living there. I've briefly visited Traill College once, and I'm nervous about committing to residence there because I remember the parking being abysmal and it was difficult to get in and out, but I don't know if it's different for actual residents of the building. I'm also debating whether or not, I should just get my own apartment off campus.

Advice Employment opportunities for first year

Hey everyone, I’m just wondering about the possibility of landing a job in first year. I know what everyone says about workload and things, but I need to work to survive in uni, and I would love an on campus job. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on where to apply? I saw that the accounting association (a specialization I’m considering) was looking for a first year representative, but I don’t know if they’re looking for an incoming first year or not. If anyone has any leads or inside knowledge, I have a stacked resume! Thanks 😊
