Your resume is the among the first starting points for improvement. A decent checklist to check your resume against is the one at the Canada Job Bank Resume Guide (Backup link: here).
Where to get some more help on a resume:
Employment Ontario: If you are a Citizen or Permanent Resident, you can get 1-on-1 assistance for your resume at an Employment Ontario agency (website). If you are a temporary resident, you can still attend their group workshops on resume writing if they hold any. They may also provide wage incentives.
Brainfuse at Public Libraries: Many libraries in the Greater Toronto Area offer a service called Brainfuse. You can upload your resume and receive critique within 24 hours.
University/College Career Centres: For post-secondary students and alumni
Lifemark Vocational Services: Free workshops
Reddit: Subreddits like r/resumes or others can be a way to get crowdsourced feedback on your resume.

Writing resumes is not just a matter of "just use AI", no automated tool exists which can completely eliminate the need for thoughtful human input on resumes.
Even if you don't have time to tailor your resume for every job, at least do this for every type of job.
The quality of resume editing varies significantly, even among those who call themselves "professionals."
Having a poorly done LinkedIn public profile can work against you.
If your target job typically expects you to provide a portfolio such as the case of graphics design portfolios, consider your portfolio an extended part of your resume which needs to be polished.
Lying on your resume can backfire on you, unfortunately this point is worth mentioning again here.
2. Expand Your Job Search
MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE UPLOADED YOUR RESUME ON JOB BANK. If you see jobs shown as LMIA, see this guide here.
Consider this in addition to using the usual typical job boards (e.g., Job Bank, Indeed, Eluta).
Some additional considerations for the job search:
Timing of Job Posts: Generally speaking, try to apply to jobs that have been newly posted. If the job has been posted for quite some time but has still not been filled, it might be a dormant job posting and may not be worth your time.
Seasonality: Notice how hiring fluctuates depending on time of year and respond accordingly.
Target "Adjacent" Roles: Look for related roles where you can use your skills, be open to being more flexible.
Online job posting websites can become crowded with job applications. You may need to add other methods:
Go Directly to Employer Websites: Job posting websites may not include postings which may be found on an employer's website.
Network: Let people you know that you’re looking for work. Reach out to people in your target industry for "informational interviews." Attend relevant job fairs and career events.
Recruitment Agencies: Some companies outsource their hiring to staffing firms. Note that these recruitment agencies get compensated if they get you hired, and that they aren't necessarily looking out for you.
Targeted Walk-ins: For local businesses as well as certain businesses, dropping off a physical resume to the hiring manager can be more effective than only doing online applications. Go during a less busy time and ask to talk to their hiring manager.
Volunteer for Experience: Volunteering for non-profits can be a way to build up your network, gain references, and relevant skills. Food pantries and thrift stores are examples of several to start volunteering.
3. Employment Ontario Agencies
Employment Ontario is a provincial network of agencies that helps people find work. The level of help they provide is limited by your status in Canada. In addition to providing one-on-one job counselor, they may provide group workshops related to employment.
Assisted Services: One-on-one sessions with a job counselor (for resume help and job matching) are generally limited by your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses.
Temporary Residents: If you are here on a study permit or work permits as a temporary resident, you may not necessarily qualify for their one-on-one job counseling. However, you might be able to attend some of their group workshops free-of-charge depending on the agency.
Employment Ontario agencies operate under a "results-based" funding model to meet certain "outcome numbers" such as placing people in any job, this can influence the type of help you receive.
Pick your agency carefully, they may have different employment partners as well as differences in how much support you can get.
4. Subsidized Training and Funded Work Experience
The government offers various programs to help specific groups enter the workforce through free or paid incentives and training. These programs are limited to your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses. Many of these programs are with Employment Ontario agencies, ask them about it.
Some such programs as follows:
Pre-Apprenticeship Training: Free programs that include job-specific training to help you start a career, many of these programs being for the skilled trades.
Better Jobs Ontario: Provides up to for tuition and living expenses if you have been laid off or are in a low-income household and need to retrain for an in-demand career.
Wage Incentives for Employers: Programs like Canada Summer Jobs provide wage subsidies for employers to hire youth (ages 15-30). Other specialized incentives may exist for employers who hire persons with disabilities or those facing significant barriers to work.

I work in tech sales at a reputable company in Toronto. 7 years in, coming up on almost 5 years in the same role. It’s stable and comfy, but the past 2 years have been very challenging. Almost feel like I’m on an island. Been overlooked for a promotion that went to someone with less experience. It wasn’t for poor performance (I’ve hit quota every year and once made pres club) but rather it seems like it was favouritism. Let me be clear- I’m not saying this because I’m delusional in my own opinion of myself. I had a tough personal situation that I grinded through to make pres club a couple years ago, but that was used against me when performance reviews came due. I didn’t properly advocate for myself, and maybe that was seen as weakness? Anyhow, it’s felt toxic since then.
Should I stay in a stable role in this economy, put my head down and keep enduring through crippling anxiety? Or should I start finding out what my experience is worth at other companies and look to make a change? I’m scared to jump ship and end up laid off x number of months later, with all the negative news we’ve seen in tech
I have been applying to 250+ jobs in the last 3 months and not a single interview, changed my resume 5 times. Now i am starting to wonder if its my resume or people are just not getting interviews at all
Hi y’all, so I feel like I’ve hit a bit of a standstill in my current job and have hit a level of burn out that I can’t even begin to describe.
For context, I am a case worker and have a sociology degree. I have a ton of customer service experience from before my current job. But due to burn out, I don’t think I want to continue in this line of work, specifically non-profit/case work.
I feel a bit lost as I’ve been doing this for the last 5-6 years and feel like I don’t know what else is out there or what else I can reasonably do.
Hoping that someone can give me a bit of advice or ideas for what I can pivot to career wise.
28/F here. I got laid off last year (SDE at MAANG) and I took that opportunity to travel a bit and spend some time with my family (I know, it might not have been a good decision to take some time off in this job market, but I was just too burnt out).
Now that I am back with a fresh mindset, its taking some time for me to find a job again. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for:
Part-time jobs, freelance work, or temporary roles I could do while searching for an SDE position
Ways to find these kinds of jobs (I have only ever worked as a software developer, so I don't really know where to start)
Other things I could do to stay productive, meet people, and avoid spending all day stuck at home doing interview prep
I'm an immigrant here, and all my life, I've only had software engineering experience, so I feel a little lost when it comes to exploring other options. I don't have a lot of friends here and they are also SDEs, so even they don't have any idea what I can do.
Financially, I'm okay for now and have savings, but I know they can disappear faster than expected, and I still have my open work visa, so that's a relief. I don't like staying cooped up in my room and doing interview prep all day. I think having some "structure/routine" and something else to focus on would really help my mental health in the meantime.
If anyone has been through something similar, I would really appreciate any advice, suggestions, or even just some encouragement that things eventually work out.

I’ve been out of my undergrad for 2 years now, working mentally tiring jobs in the psychology field. I’d like to shift into more office type roles instead of field roles. I’m open to medical field roles but preferably something that won’t have me completely drained mentally by the end of the week. Something that has a better work life balance. I got a job offer, and the person asked me to come in for an in-person interview. The person I met is the owner of a printing business. He is quite elderly, and instead of running a shop, he goes door to door looking for work. The job would involve me handling the graphics, but also a lot of organizational and office administration work. He gave me a set of assignments (they are easy) and said he would like a trial period to see whether I work well with him.
He was very vague about the office location, and a lot of things seemed to jumble together as he spoke. He had trouble hearing, kept talking about himself, and repeated the same things over and over. I'm confused about what to do. Since I'm currently unemployed, should I just go along with it and complete the whole trial period (no money)?

Are all jobs posted on the public City of Toronto job portal? Or are most jobs posted and filled internally? Would it be beneficial to get on the wait list for volunteering in hopes of future employment? Would it be helpful to try for roles in other departments at the city in hopes of transferring over eventually?
I have almost a decade of experience working in animal shelters, in both animal care and program operations. I’ve been keeping an eye out for almost 3 years at this point, but the only roles I ever see posted by TAS on the City’s job portal are Animal Care Attendant, RVT, and Veterinarian. I recently graduated from York University with a BCom degree specializing in Information Technology and Business Systems Analysis. I’m currently looking for junior Business Systems Analyst, Business Analyst, or similar roles in Toronto/GTA.
I have about five years of banking and operations experience. I spent four years at TD, where I worked as a Client Operations Analyst and later as a Senior Operations Analyst. I’m now working at Bank of America as a Process Improvement Analyst.
My experience includes process improvement, operational analysis, identifying inefficiencies, working with stakeholders, documenting processes, and recommending solutions. I’m hoping to transition into the field I studied and build more direct experience in business and systems analysis.

I always write here to look for any part time or full time opportunities and as an economic graduate I am looking for roles like client associate, operations analyst, finance associate etc mainly in any sector as of now
I know that this is not a platform where people can tell me what am I doing wrong - as I have mainly tried everything from referrals to networking to using my personal connections- yet I am at this point
Many have suggested to get a masters degree or a cfa or a cpa certificate to just level up my experience but I believe that these are additional costs for me
Being an international student and paying 130k for 4 years of school- I don’t really want to take up another degree when I just finished my undergraduate last year

i graduated last year and i have finally found full time employment with a development company with potential to move up. what a ride!!!!! i’ve been working retail for the time being and i can finally escape. this is so exciting. i am not the most confident person so i was doubtful in my abilities to secure this role but super elated it worked out in the end.
i am extremely grateful for the community here which served as my reassurance during this process. no more cover letter writing or resume altering for the next little while, and no more trying to one up AI screenings. i couldn’t be happier.

The Toronto market is weird because sometimes you apply for jobs or even interview then you don't hear back only to see it reposted. What's really going on lol, when you remove the ghost jobs there's nothing much out there.

I graduated 2 months back from Seneca with bachelor's in Accounting and Finance, did 6 months audit and tax co-op at a CPA firm.....now I've been continuously applying to jobs but not getting any response....and I've reached a point where I don't even see entry level jobs anymore on Indeed, never got any response from LinkedIn easy apply. I checked company websites too but no jobs posting in big 6 for new grad right now. I feel so lost and I ended up buying IFIC banking course in hope I might get job in banking (still preparing, haven't booked the exam yet)....please suggest something if someone was in the same position as me and you graduated recently!!!! I really don't know what to do know
