I’m curious. Does anyone here only work as a substitute teacher and live on their own? No second job, just subbing. If so, what area are you in, and has it been financially manageable?

Elementary school secretary asked if I'll do a 3-week sub for a 3rd grade teacher who is going on paternity leave. It might be longer but as of now, it'll be for 3-weeks.
I've sub at this school and it's actually my daughter's old elementary school.
Any advice or tips I should know going into this or do during this time?

But I didn't work on Monday. Monday was the first day of school, and there were no jobs. The first job I am scheduled to work would've been next Tuesday and Wednesday. I've left a message with the district's sub coordinator and emailed Kelly with screenshots that I took before the account got locked. I feel like this is the final straw in regards to me working with Kelly 😡

I just graduated with an IT degree and want to become a substitute teacher in New Jersey. What are the steps, and how much do substitute teachers get paid? I live in Central New Jersey.

I was a permanent employee as a para for a few years and then stepped down to sub again due to some admin staff changes and my sped teacher being dramatic and lying - ugh such a long story. I’m well liked by office staff and teacher staff and I’m a preferred sub on many levels. I’ve applied to a recent para posting which was my old position I was switched out of and two people placed there left or were not rehired. It’s been almost 30 days since I submitted the application and I haven’t heard back but the status of my app is now review. Does it usually take a long time to hear back? I have a few faculty references to the new principal but ugh this is frustrating waiting to har back on any level. I’ve been subbing and working for this district for over 12 years. Is it that I’m valuable as a sub or something else?

Based on the title, I am asking on when I should expect jobs to be open for the next school year. School starts in my county on August 10th, so in under 3 weeks. Pre-planning for teachers start on August 4th.

I am seeing about when I should be hounding the app (SmartFind for my county) on when teachers will start putting in their days for needing subs. I’ve been hounding the app but there hasn’t been much yet, maybe a job posted every 3 days for the fall.

I’m the building sub this next year at my kids’ elementary school and while I did play music sometimes last year when I was per diem, I want to curate a playlist I can quickly go to for arrival time. Obviously Disney has a ton of great music, but I’m wondering about other songs more for the older kids, grades 4-5? What’s been your favorites?

Asking for a friend: She just submitted her 30-day substitute permit today (California). Can you apply to positions with just a receipt of application (that you can then let them know when it’s been processed)? Some of her applications close in a few days.

I was looking to be a substitute to get an idea about if teaching is really for me or not. I looked into the requirements and it says "Obtain a sponsor school district or organization".

Can someone who's become a substitute in NJ explain what they mean by this exactly? Is it just having somewhere that I plan to sub? Do I need to interview/apply to a specifc school district and be approved first?

Also is having a college degree all you need or do I need more classes? I have a BA in Psychology.

Currently I am in school taking summer classes. My last semester will be this fall and I will graduate with a general studies degree and immediately enroll in an ACP through the same university.

I have been working remotely doing marketing for a video game company while I’ve been in school. Well, the company just shut down “due to AI,” and now I’m in search of employment until I can become a full-time teacher. (in the spring if there’s an opening from quitting or maternity, but most likely the following year in the Fall I would guess)

I’m struggling between 3 options.
1. Subbing every day (Already in the pool for 2 local districts. 1 district is a 4 day week, so I could pick up Fridays at another district I’m in the pool for)
2. Full-time Behavioral paraprofessional at the elementary school in the 4 day week district.
3. Currently waiting on an offer from a remote company in the same industry I was previously in. Interview went well this Monday, but I haven’t heard back yet.

Considerations:
- my wife is pregnant and due at the end of October. I really have enjoyed the flexibility my remote job allows me. I have not missed an appointment and am not excited about missing most of the rest of the appointments if I decide to do full-time para.
- teaching full-time is the final ultimate end boss goal. Do paras or subs get hired into full-time teaching roles more often or is it about equal?
- the remote job would pay twice as much as subbing or para. Would be hard to pass up, but again, not sure if I’m getting it or not yet.
- school year starts 8/3 for the 4 day week district. I believe the para spot has a start date listed for next week, a week before 8/3. I might not be able to wait too much longer on the remote position and still have the para position waiting for me.
- I’m not sure what the para pay is just yet. Interview should be this week as an admin contacted me to apply. Subs make $135 a day in this district. Which position usually makes more?
- I don’t need insurance or daycare as I have excellent and cheap options already. If I don’t need the full-time benefits, wouldn’t the flexibility of subbing just be better for my situation?

I'm probably overthinking this, but looking for some insight.

I lost my teaching position back in May and the market has been absolutely awful.

I applied to a position I really want over a month ago and figured they had moved on since l've heard nothing, but they just emailed me an interview schedule for next week.

I'm getting ahead of the game here since I don't know that l'll be hired for the position, but about a month ago I was hired for a long term subbing position in the subject I am credentialed to teach since there has been so little hope of receiving a contract this year. Long term position starts up in August with the students on their first day and probably goes until November for December.

If I am hired for this new permanent position, will I run into any issues with the long term subbing position in regard to my credential or blacklisting or anything like this?

Essentially, are there any potential repercussions (I know I’ll likely be burning a bridge with this district)?

I don’t recall signing or reading anything that acknowledges that I have a certain amount of notice to give the district, but if hired for the permanent position the other district would maybe have a week and a half to find someone to fill my position and I don’t believe I would have started the school year with them. Can they place some sort of hold on me and say I have to fill the position until they find someone new or something along these lines?

Indeed popped up to say it had openings for substitute teacher in my school district. When I go to their website (Kelly edu) i search for my zip code and it doesnt show that they have my school district in need of substitute teachers. I applied anyway through the interested portion on their website. Just trying to see what people's experiences have been with if theyre not posted on the website if they actually have openings.

So hey guys! I’m currently a freshman in college, and I’ve been seriously considering substituting. My major is in the education field (secondary), and it would be interesting to learn by substituting. Anyway, I’ve been doing so much research on it, i heard good things so far but me being the person I am, I'm a bit nervous about it. Especially because of how kids are these days.. I mean, I’m young myself so I can maybe handle it? Let me know please! I'll gladly take advice from anyone, give me tips, anything!

I've got a bachelor's in art as of last year (in SoCal), and am currently working as a teacher's aide, more in the area of early childhood education. I also take child development classes, two days out of the week and will be doing so going into the fall so far. My hope was to gradually ease into it maybe a few days out of the month.

Subbing is something I want to do eventually if not sooner than later so I can gain some experience in classroom instruction, and, I hope, gradually work my way into to a teaching credential program so I can become a teacher, maybe for something like Tk or kinder/1st grade (or art. I didn't want to pigeonhole myself into only being an art teacher, long story as to why but it is still an option.) So far, I really do enjoy working with littler children despite how chaotic it can sometimes be. I am comfortable managing difficult behaviors; I just have less experience in the way of classroom management for as many as 30 kids and being the teacher going over a lesson plan over the course of a full day.

My job at present is flexible and allows me to set days and hours during weekdays, and I am hoping to keep it for some balance, but my worry is if I apply to a sub job alongside the two days per week classes, it wouldn't be feasible.

I was also wondering if anyone had experience or advice for subbing the younger/elementary grades, especially if you were new to this initially. I'm usually easygoing and find it easier to be with littles. I am just worried I may be "too nice" and won't know how to direct the kids. Thanks.

In the past I was a poor student and failed a few classes, my gpa is above a 2 and I’ve made satisfactory academic progress in the last 2 years. Since those failed classes will show up on my transcript will that possibly affect my chances of getting my short term sub license?

I know it only says 60 credit hours, which I have, or an associates degree needed on Illinois department of education website but was just curious if that could possibly be something that would have an impact?

But I’m looking for part-time work to help while my film industry craters and I thought Subbing might be a good fit. Except I don’t know how to teach a class of kids 😳- like how teachers handle kids these days in classrooms. I’m really good with kids and good leading and teaching in general, but the ins and outs of a teacher life is foreign to me now. Any suggestions? Advice?
I have 2 bachelor degrees (History & Lit) and some post grad education too. Really easy to apply to be a sub but I’d feel crazy if I got hired w/out having been in a school in 25 yrs (I’m 50)

So I completed summer school and it ended on July 10. I enjoyed my first week off doing a bunch of laundry and household chores and some amazon shopping.

I have another 3 weeks off. Then I go on a short 4 day trip. The following week school starts on August 17 for which I have the choice to dive right back in or wait it out and work when I want (finances permitting of course).

I know this might have been asked over and over. I am 59/single/childfree. I live alone with my cat and I def enjoy my solitude. Any advice on how to spend these weeks alone? I do belong to a women's social group online and also attend meetup's now and then. But socializing is expensive and I personally don't want to get out more than a few times a month.

What is everyone else up to smack dab in the middle of summer? I live in an apt. I WISH I had my house to work on - renovations, gardening, etc. Something productive and worth my time. I've also cleaned out my closet recently and my home is more or less spic and span and organized.

Hello just got hired by Kelly services in June for the substitute position. Due to it being summer I haven’t been able to see many job openings. The few that pop up are gone in seconds once I click and open the app lol it’s like people grab them right away. I was just wondering do the jobs go as quickly when school is in session or is it like this just because it is summer. Just curious so I can see if I should look for other jobs, because if jobs just go within seconds I don’t think it’ll be worth my time lol thanks

I fail to understand why people who have no desire or training to be in education think substitute teaching is a good part-time gig. As a sub, you're working with children. You are an educator. Whether you are with the students for one day, one week, one month, or one year, you're an educator. It is not a part-time gig. It is not something to be taken lightly. It isn't something to be done until something better comes along. In California, you have to have a degree and a certificate - at least a 30 days sub certificate. Why would you do that if you're thinking of it as just a stop gap measure?

Back in April, May I had accepted a LTS position from the start of the school year through November. Just recently I was offered a FTE at a different school that I'd rather take instead. I can't seem to find any definitive information on if there's be repercussions if I were to leave the former offer. Any additional information you can share, including who I could maybe reach out to to discuss further?

I’m applying for a building sub position in CT and it’s looking like I’m going to get the job, does anyone know if there could be a drug test during onboarding? If they found weed in the test would I lose the job? I stopped last week just in case but it takes up to a month to get out of your system and I’m nervous
