Of course now, being a veteran player, the crabsquid isn't that scary. But oh man. The vibes this guy gives off with those shockwave as you encounter him in that pitch black darkness, scrambling into an abandoned base for cover? It will always be unsettling to me. Followed closely by the Reaper with the aurora...

Subnautica 2 not having a hull integrity system for bases makes sense. In the beginning of the game we get the adaptation to be able to handle high pressures, and it would also make sense if that same adaptation makes us able to ascent the water fast without dying (fast pressure changes). What that means is, we are able to handle high pressures without a problem, so a base in the water doesn't need to have normal atmospheric pressure inside, but can have the same air pressure the water around the base does. So with that logic it doesn't need to withstand Oceangate Titan types of forces. This also would explain why the water with a vehicle bay doesn't flow up into the base. I don't know if that is intended by the devs, and I would still love a hull integrity system to make base building just a bit more challenging.

The whole game I thought the cure for the desease is to preapre some experiments from cuddlefish blood or something, I was so excited when I managed to raise 3 in the aquarium, then I went inside took one and cannot do anything with it. I completed the game, left the planet and it is still bothering me. So what was the purpose of cuddlefish?

They're said to be completely harmless, and as far as I know they are, but the game shows they have a very small threat level. I got really curious about it for some reason but couldnt find any info about it.

Here is the flavor text from when I posted on r/SpeculativeEvolution to be all factual and grounded:

The Gargantuan Leviathan of 4546B is a huge extinct creature. Today only its massive bones can be found.

New data scans show quite a different lifestyle than the initial assessment.

The creature was a slow moving but ravenous omnivore, with different food preferences at different stages of its life, but always with enough opportunism to fuel its gargantuan metabolism. It spent most of its adult life as a benthic creature. Fully grown Gargantuans are too heavy to swim for extended periods of time. Instead, most locomotion consisted of half-slithering and half-punting itself across the seafloor. At this large of a size, extracting oxygen from the water becomes inefficient. To compensate, the Gargantuan has extensive gills and a high blood pressure, as well structures of “accessory gills” along the sides of its body, which were wrinkled patches of vascularized skin which can be retracted under scales during times of movement to not impede hydrodynamics. While the fully grown creature was an opportunistic omnivore, most of its time feeding was spent eating animals buried in the sand and mud. These consisted of shellfish and worms as well an meiofauna, as well as any bottom-dwelling fish not fast enough to escape. To feed, the creature simply scoops up huge mouthfuls of mud and sand, and vomits up water to trap any creatures against the baleen-like hair on the roof of its mouth. Small creatures get caught in its extensive gill rakers as well.

However, these creatures hatch from their eggs with a much more active and predatory lifestyle. Over the years they will slowly shift to a more herbivorous diet. After that, they will shift their diets to incorporate more benthic organisms, before shifting into the more indiscriminate feeding methods of their final stages. Most individuals of a given population would never reach these sizes and stages of their life.

It seems the habitats these creatures needed, large and relatively shallow tracts of vegetated or barren sand, are no longer common on 4546B, and the burrowing shellfish which made a up a large portion of its diet have gone extinct. The creature itself seems to have gone extinct millions of years before the Kharaa, possibly due to changing climate or habitat.

Would this creature have been alive today, it may pose minimal direct danger to a human diver, granted they stay out of its way of its mouth. However, it could pose a huge danger to any artificial structures erected within its territory, as it may get curious and start chewing on them, or simply knock them over since they were in its way. It is unknown whether the Architects had clones any specimens from the DNA samples they had in storage.

Weird post, but I love when the vibe of a game is so strong and I happen to also discover a song that really fits it!

For example (maybe the only example unless you know many deep aquatic theme songs lol) is this one by Brass Camel called This is Goodbye. Its actually LITERALLY about the Titan submersible incident, but the vibes are there for sure, as well as human greed and Alterra’s aggressive expansion to the far corners of the universe/human hubris in the face of giant sea monsters.

My favorite line is here:

The text says it all but please help because I'm doing some experiments for survival

Started playing subnautica (mostly spoiler free) on my phone. I also made a post yesterday. Just discovered this and I am speechless. Just wanted to tell my terror to the few people who will see this

I haven't been playing for too long so no spoilers ideally. So, I'm generally the type of person that's just very cautious and avoids anything scary, which is fine but it means that I keep avoiding exploring any more than I have to, especially when it comes to going deeper (which is basically everything, lol). I've only been playing for like 8-10 hours I think and I also generally take things really slow so yeah. I've basically only been going to lifepods and stuff like that that the game points me to, as well as some wrecks now that I have a laser cutter, but I have been avoiding going too deep in a lot of places. For example going into the jellyfish cave next to one of the lifepods (I went a bit in to just see but that's it) or exploring the biomes around the islands literally at all (whenever I have to go anywhere further away I basically just stay towards the surface in my seamoth and that's it, lol). I even wanted to just try to find where the moonpool in the facility is from the outside but I got too scared to go too deep even with my seamoth, lol.

Do you have any advice on first of all if it's okay for me to be this cautious and if I should actually genuinely be leaving a lot of this stuff for later or if not what are some good ways to push through and actually get myself to explore more? Also like are there any good ways to maybe better prepare to explore scary places more, so it doesn't feel as scary? I know death doesn't matter too much in this game, which is good but still. A lot of the time if I'm there exploring something else I have a lot of loot on me that I would rather not lose and also I don't really want to lose my seamoth, even though I can definitely easily make another one, lol

I found a time capsule on my way back from the aurora and opened it i got the data page from it about a cuddlefish named Gilbert but no inventory came up so I can't take him it's also my first time capsule and I play on ps5 plz help

I'm going a bit crazy here! A leviathan yeeted my tadpole way over the red line and I can't get it back. I accepted I need to make a new one but I'm currently unable to craft the scout ray chassis as it says my moonpool is too small. I've read online that this is a glitch, and I've built 4 different moonpools in different locations and it still says this every time. My game is a bit stalled here and it's getting frustrating. Has anyone else encountered this, and how have you worked around it?

...repeatedly spamming the button for the laser cutter at regular intervals actually cuts a sealed door (slightly) faster than if you just hold down the button.

i read that its common bug, just another to long lists of bugs of this game, i was able to kill 2 reapers around Aurora but i cant kill the third behind south island, i thought only that one was bugged so i left it be, now i went deep under 500m in cave with fossilized remains and there is another ghost leviathan and same thing happened, they just stopped reacting at all so
1. either gas pods bugged out altho they kill other creatures for me still dealing damage

1. leviathans bugged out and cannot be damaged because they dont even flinch like they did before, or have unlimited health

i read online these are common bugs, tried to clean my cache files, tried to check game data on epic games store, tried to not put gas pods in any container before going to fight, nothing works, AI told me i should install fix mods but what do you guys think is installing mods gonna work? im about to delete the game because leviathans and warpers are just disappearing under ground and i was underground one time too

of all the edits they done with the game they would at least fix some bugs but you still can softlock yourself if you use all the sulfur from puff fish to make flares and not repair tool

Playing Subnautica 2 with my gf and its her first time, so I leave her with the responsibilities of building the base... this is what I return to.

I bought the game on Steam years ago, and played a couple of hours of it, but then got bored and forgot about it. Three years later (about a week ago) I picked it back up, started a fresh save, and dived in.

I went in mostly blind, but I did look certain things up as I went along. A number of parts, especially finding certain story-relevant locations, I might honestly NEVER have found otherwise.

I loved the game. I spent almost every free minute I had on it. I love the sea, and even though it's an alien one, this game so brilliantly captures both the wonder and dread of it. I felt stressed the ENTIRE time, especially while underwater, but that honestly was part of the allure. It didn't go away even after I learned how to kill leviathans, thalassophobia doesn't go away that easily.

I spent most of the game sticking VERY close to the main base, and progressed very slowly. The lack of an in-game map was a serious handicap for me, with my terrible sense of orientation, but once I got a hang of using beacons (and always remembering to have one on me), it became much easier. There's still lots of locations in the game I've never even visited, though. Like, I only ever actually found one entrance to the Lost River and Jellyshroom cave, and I never ventured into the part of the crash site with multiple reapers.

Speaking of leviathans, I went out of my way to kill one of each variety. I killed the Reaper near the entrance to the Aurora, using the stasis then shank strategy, the (juvenile) Ghost by the colossal skeleton in the Lost River with the same strategy, and the Sea Dragon at the Magma Castle by latching onto its back with my Prawn Suit's grappling arm, and driving the drilling arm into it until it stopped moving. (Getting flung around by the leviathan is actually how I ended up running into the entrance, too!) I did look up how to kill them first, I didn't find it by accident. Sorry.

The safe shallows are still my favorite biome. I love colorful reefs. But the Lost River is a surprisingly close second. Desolate, isolated places are captivating. My favorite specific location in the game is the grove with the giant "tree".

I unfortunately don't see myself playing Below Zero or 2 any time soon. I'm just going to be too busy to get addicted to a game like I just did for this one, for a while. But I DEFINITELY want to play them. Plus, I think I need a break from thalassophobia for a good, long while.

10/10, the exactly appropriate amount of water.

You’ve finally made it off of planet 4546B, and while you had to leave everything behind (including your beloved pet cuddlefish), you were able to bring this print home to remember the incredible and terrifying time you had on the planet.

This was a fun experimental color-reduction print that I felt inspired to do to show my love for this game. Generally I nearly despise the idea of “survival mechanics” in games. There are two games with this that I absolutely adore though. Subnautica was one of them. Something about the amazing world and fun of discovery just kept me coming back again and again until I got the platinum trophy.
