Dont worry, the original dragons dogma is like that too
"Prepare for a expendition which will take a long time" you take on a castle that has some undead bosses and the dragon appears, you fight it and bam , you are basically 90% of the main story (tho to be fair the entire world changes with new enemies but it is optional and not very large in the first place)
Most of the playtime is in the everfall which is a lot of rooms with a farmable loot table
Yeah, I was really disappointed by dd2. I was hoping for an immersive world but it feels so devoid of actual life. The combat and enemies are great. They just need way more dynamic incidents, meaningful npcs, and stuff. The pawn system is an interesting concept but I would rather have a well written character with personality be my companion. And I hate having to change companions every hour of gameplay.
Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen really got me hooked. For some reason, DD2 didn't do the same for me. After reaching the first Ending, i couldn't be bothered to keep going :/

I was about to comment the same thing. Just beat DD1 for the first time a few months ago and I accidentally triggered the final boss segment.
I hadn't explored even 50% of the map when I got into a boss fight with some cult. The gamer instinct in me wanted to make sure there was nothing in the area I missed so I turned around to backtrack only to find out that the area I just left was retroactively turned into the trigger for the final sequence of the game.
I was more than a little confused and annoyed because half the game I wandered around wondering what the hell I was supposed to do because the quest tracker is such shit. After accepting quests in bulk, I could never remember which were the side quests and which were the main quests (so I could avoid those until I 100% the side quests to avoid missing anything) aside from the obvious collectathon quests.
