Days gone, you finish exploring the intro region and then the entire map opens up. It is huge.

Kind of a pleasant surprise imo, just when you're thinking that you've explored most of the map - Bam, here's another whole map for you...

I love dystopic, zombie-esque games, and this one was a great time

Not to spoil for anyone who hasn't played it yet, but the original Dying Light has a pleasant surprise like this too. I love both Dying Light and Days Gone

I'm giving it a second shot after falling off the first time pretty early. You mean that the area I can see now is just a small part of the overall game map?

Correct. The game is much longer than you assume it would be, even without doing every piece of side content.
