Announcements Please use NSFW tag for images of graphic injuries

There have been a lot of posts lately sharing very graphic images of snails with extreme, severe injuries. It is perfectly fine to share this type of content if you need help with an injured snail, but please use the NSFW tag for these images.

This has been an unofficial rule of this sub for a while, but it seems to have been forgotten lately. So, I'm making an official mod team announcement: this is our official policy. Graphic, upsetting images must be tagged.

People come to this sub because they love snails. They don't come here expecting to see images of destroyed shells, shell-less snails, and dead snails. It can be very upsetting and distressing for users here to see this type of content unexpectedly. People may also be browsing this sub in public and want to avoid gory images.

Images of mating don't require the NSFW tag. But please use this tag for pictures of injuries including, but not limited to: mantle collapse, shell fell off, crushed shell, organ exposure, stepped-on snail.

Thanks to everyone who has been tagging their posts so far. Again, it's still totally okay to post this content if you need help, but please tag it appropriately so everyone can have a good experience here.

Announcements Introducing Seller Verification

Hello r/snails!

As many of our users are aware, it can be difficult to find reliable, legal, and ethical sellers of captive bred snails.

To better facilitate buying, selling, & adoptions on this sub, we are introducing a seller verification program. Verified Sellers will be users or external sources that have been vetted by mods. Verified Sellers will be allowed to advertise their sales on the sub, and a Verified Sellers tag will applied to their posts to indicate they are a trusted source. Individual users on this sub as well as sellers on external websites are both able to be verified. A list of Verified Sellers organized by location will be added to the bottom of this post, which sellers can chose to opt in to if they wish.

Are you a seller or breeder interested in becoming verified? Send a DM to u/doctorhermitcrab to get started. Breeders who prefer to give snails away rather than sell are also welcome to apply.

Happy snailing!

Like the title says, just sharing my babies’ growth. The main one pictured is Hephaestus. Day one (not of birth, but when I got him) vs now.

I started with 5 tiny babies. Hephaestus, Pancake and Jorge are still here and thriving beautifully (the other two unfortunately were runts and had shell problems).

Jack is the youngest out of the three garden snails I have—by, “youngest,” I mean by a few days as I just found him recently. He’s currently munching on his cuttlebone.😊

This clever girl has been finding every single way to sneak out of her box! Today we found her near the ceiling behind a plant in our bathroom so we’re taking action and we’re going to buy some plexiglass, put some holes into it and cover her terrarium
Just look at her face at the end!!

The only thing that I’m worried about is if this behavior is normal, even tho I know snails like to explore

Help strange "flake" like thing sticking out of my snail's mouth

hi folks, just looking for some advice as I've noticed this unusual protrusion from my snail's mouth. This is an achatina fulica jade. Apologies if the photos aren't the clearest but it was quite hard to photograph.

I initially thought it was some big piece of substrate due to it appearing very thin & irregular but it has not moved in a few days. I've read about gut extrusions and similar things but this doesn't quite look like those.

Would really appreciate any info on this, thanks!

A little plant is growing in my snail vivarium

Post image
Upvotes

I found this little plant in my new tiny vivarium for my Subulina octona snails, which I just bought last week. I'm very impressed that it already grew so big, because usually my big GALs need 2-4 days to completely tear a living plant apart. So I'm very curious whether the plant will manage to grow even bigger, or if a tiny snail army will beat it up...who knows..

i woke up this morning to what i believe is snex ( correct me if i'm wrong )
have a few questions ! is that a love dart i see ? also one of them is clearly bigger than the other , i assume he's older right since he has the lip & the other one doesn't? will they both lay eggs? since one is younger, will it not be able to lay eggs? how long can i expect until they lay eggs?

Can touching / picking up a snail or just handling it apple , giant , Roman etc be dangerous to you and the snail ?

Upvotes

Never ever took the time to look at snails or even think about them, always thought they carried disease until I actually held a little snail I found outside on my Window last week, it was very tiny .
They’re very alien like.
Anyway can they be dangerous? How do people keep them as pets / care for them ?
What species are beginner friendly ?
Can I accidentally hurt the snail without noticing or will it hurt me instead ?
Asking because I want one now 😑👍

I have slugs and snails in this enclosure it has some problems with water at the bottom but I'm slowly draining the water and the water smells like shit literally but the enclosure doesn't smell it smells like a forest but the worms they look like pinworms should I get rid of them and if so should I change the enclosure I have a good plan to change the enclosure and not taking the worms with by like luring them out with some high value food and moving all 40-50 slugs and snails slowly until non come to the food any more

Help HELP garden has been snail proofed💔💔💔💔

I just moved into a house in Fort Wayne, Indiana. First thing I did was snail search. I’m from SC and have read extensively about the different species here. I was so excited! Unfortunately the last woman who lived here started a vegetable garden.( perfect for fresh veggies for snails☺️. My current snails are already so happy. I thought the huge plant was squash but NO. ITS CUCUMBERS!! She 100% snail proof this place but idk how. I see slugs but no thank you. I could literally be luring them to me and catch them before that cuc addiction starts. But how? How do I fix this?
Also if anyone lives in this area or around here could you please tell me where I can find some snails????
